Porto Restaurant in South Lakeland

Outstanding, what a gem. We stumbled across Porto because we sat outside at Bryson's opposite for ages and nobody came to serve us, so we thought we would give Porto a try. Very glad we did: simply an outstanding lunch with friendly, efficient service. Wild mushroom risotto with crispy kale was a highlight. The bread is excellent, too. Highly recommended

We booked Porto for a Sunday roast whilst on a visit to the area. The beef was fantastic and the two course offer was excellent value for money. The staff were very welcoming and the restaurant nice and relaxed. Would definitely recommend.

A superb meal, we turned up here having had nowhere booked and wanted to eat outside making the most of the beautiful weather, we timed it well and the waitress set up a table outside for 5, she warned they were busy and there could be a wait but in reality she managed expectations very well and the food came faster than expected. Amazing food, amazing service, made the last night of our girls holiday very special with spectacular food and setting thank you for being so accommodating! Can’t wait to visit again.

This was a surprise meal for my birthday and it’s safe to say Porto as an all round restaurant was awesome. Amazing food service and atmosphere, I’ll definitely be visiting again with my partner when we’re next in the area :)

Booked in advance, excellent service. We had an amazing 3 course meal with wine to celebrate my husband's birthday this was our first meal out due to lockdown in over 12 months.so the meal was amazing and so tasty. In fact the ribeye steak was the best I've ever eaten. Lovely setting ,quite tasteful surroundings

WOW just WOW. Wanting to sit outside in Bowness when you haven't booked a restaurant. Then you come across this little gem. We sat outside(with the server popping 2 tables together) ate an amazing meal followed by an amazing desert. Laughed, ate and drank. The staff were amazing and great service. Highly recommend

Porto is a cosy fine-dining restaurant in a converted house just off the main drag in Bowness.This was by far the best food we had while in the lakes- we ordered three courses and every meal was spot on. Very good to excellent. The service was good- with orders coming quickly and as requested. The restaurant itself is very pleasant. Price was good- the cost was similar to other places we ate at, even though the food was much better.It's worth noting that the menu is not very large- I think they have maybe six or seven main dishes on the dinner menu, plus steak. This is probably a good thing, as it means that most of their ingredients are fresh.

We booked Porto for my birthday and we weren't disappointed. We had a lovely table upstairs, which was very cosy and intimate. The food was absolutely top quality and delicious - I had the scallops and fillet of bass, and my partner had the soup and chicken, which was all beautifully cooked and presented.We sat out on the cute little private balcony for our dessert and coffees, and watch the world go by - perfect evening, and probably the best restaurant in Bowness.

Michelin star style food served in big portions with a delicious Mediterranean twist. Very reasonably priced (we’ve paid much more for much less!) Staff have the right balance of friendliness but not intrusive. Perfect place for dinner when in Windermere… thank you 💜

We visited here on the last of our honeymoon. Food was extremely tasty, warm and friendly feeling with a great atmosphere inside a gorgeous building. Our waitress was so friendly and warm, I wish I can remember her name. Thank you

This was the 3rd time coming here with my boyfriend. Each time gets better! Like before, we booked the one and only balcony table for our birthday anniversary. The restaurant staff went above and beyond. We arrived at 6:00PM and there was confetti and "happy birthday" decorations on the table. The food was incredible, we both had the steak. Even though mine came back medium, instead of medium rare, they very kindly took it back and gave me a perfectly cooked medium rare steak. We were so full that we decided not to have desert but the chef had already prepared "Happy Birthday" and "Happy Anniversary" chocolate plates for us. I was delighted by the excellent service! Special thanks to the chefs, Mirka and Millie!!!

We ate here on a Tuesday evening, and the restaurant were clearly managing booking numbers closely as there were lots of empty tables, however we were asked to choose our own table. This resulted in others sitting close to us when much of the restaurant was empty......it didn’t feel socially distanced. The menu was great and the food we had was lovely. Again however the service slipped when the food arrived before the drinks we’d ordered. The knife I’d been given looked dirty and I asked for a replacement. This too failed to arrive before the food. The restaurant has the potential to be top notch, but small elements of service let it down on our visit. With so many other places to choose from in the local area I’d look elsewhere next time.

Excellent restaurant - food excellent staff attentive. I cannot fault this restaurant- great find - if you can cope with slightly slower service if it is busy then this is the place for you . I am so happy to find a good restaurant 😊

Excellent food. Two of our party had scallops which were delicious. The main courses were lovely (lamb, pan fried halibut) and generous portions. Pity there were no cocktails but you can’t have everything!

Booked two weeks before the evening and could only get a 5.30pm slot. The food was incredible as were the service and atmosphere. This is the best food in Bowness in our view.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal here - we shared 2 starters between us - the chicken goujons and the hummus - both were very good. The stand out was the main - both went for the fillet steak and it was amazing, cooked and seasoned perfectly. The staff were lovely and attentive and the restaurant had a great ambience about it and played great background music. Definitely would return.

We told our waitress when we arrived that my husband was a coeliac. When he asked which starters were gluten free she asked if he could have something as it had yoghurt in it. Didn’t entirely inspire confidence. Anyway, he decided not to have a starter and just to go for steak and a salad as it was easiest, but the salad came with bread in it. We sent it back, but I did have to double check it was a different salad afterwards. I picked Porto because the reviews were so good for GF food. I actually had a lovely meal but it was a bit spoilt as my husband wasn’t relaxed with his meal. So please, just make sure your staff know which meals have which allergens in them.

We went to Porto last night, we hadn’t booked so it did take a few attempts to get on their terrace because of how busy they were (the restaurant was recommended to us so we really wanted to go) but it was so worth the wait. We both had the lamb koftas to start and it was the best starter we have ever eaten and then we both had steaks for our main and they were really good to. Absolutely amazing food and our waiter was really polite and helpful. Will definitely be returning when we next go to the lakes.

Attended 29th June and were luck as we got a table due to a cancellation.Nice restaurant, we were seated upstairs by the attentive front of house team who provided an efficient adequate service.The food was nice and well presented I opted for the cheese soufflé followed by sea bass my wife had lamb koftas and then a 2nd starter of scallops accompanied by seasonal vegetables .All perfectly fine.I must however take issue with the chips accompanying my main course !!This a restaurant promoting home cooked often local produce however they serve insipid flavourless frozen/oven chips at £4 per portion.I received approx. 10 chips in a bowl about the size of 1/2 a coffee mug !!I would expect at the very least to receive twice fried home cooked chips at a restaurant of this stature .I suggest that if you stated on your menus oven/frozen chips you wouldn’t sell any, however by describing them as chips the illusion is created that they will be home cooked!!Please don’t insult diners by offering FROZEN chips and then charge £4 for the privilege of leaving them on the plate.There is a saying in Newcastle “ don’t spoil the ship for a penny of tar”!!In summing up instead of remembering the evening for the nice points I went away thinking about the negative side.

We had dinner on Sunday night, the food was very good and the restaurant provided a nice refuge from Bowness.Our server who was Czech but I forget her name was simply fabulous - rushed off her feet the entire night, she did everything she could to make sure we were happy and stopped and had a chat without being intrusive.Recommended when in Bowness

We went to this restaurant for our 10th wedding anniversary meal, after reviews and recommendations, and I'm glad we did. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious with good sized portions. The fish was a particular highlight. Lovely atmosphere and good value for money for the quality and a nice meal out. Would definitely return.

Visited with my husband both got lagers bottles and glasses dumped on table no attempt by waiter to pour drinks. Food : I've had better in pub nothing special , no atmosphere and staff were watching as if trying to rush us to get next people in.Would definitely not return

Our second visit to this restaurant... the first was 4 years ago. Couldnt wait to go back and it was just as good as I remembered, in fact probably better!We sat upstairs this time and there's a beautiful terrace with a water feature although I'm glad we were sat inside as it was a bit cool.I had the scallops for starters followed by the sea bass with arancini... Hubby had the Lamb Koftas and the Fillet Steak. We shared the Sticky Toffee pudding with the most amazing homemade honeycomb! WOW!The service and in fact the whole experience was fantastic! I wish we lived closer! x

We booked a meal here for two during the covid pandemic, the restaurant adhered to covid guidelines during our visit. The food was out of this world, delicious everything served was tasty and well cooked, would definitely recommend this place brilliant service and the price is fantastic for the quality of food you receive! I ordered lamb koftas for starter and lamb chump for main, sorry no photos of desert was demolished in a instant!

We had dinner on Wednesday night. We visited last September and loved the food so much. We had friends with us on this occasion and all four of us loved it so much we were able to book for us to return on Thursday evening. We had 2 scallops, soup, and chicken livers to start followed by lamb, chicken, fillet steak and sea bass with desserts. The wine and lake gin were great to accompany the meal. On Thursday we had 3 scallops and soup followed by 3 lamb and a chicken. The food was fantastic with great service too. We are already booked to return twice in September when we are back down on holiday!

Booked a meal here for Father's Day, which sadly did not live up to expectations.The food on the whole was good, however my Dad ordered the Steak which was more fat than meat (my partner also had the steak which was not like this). When we raised this with staff, we were simply told 'well, rib-eye steak does have a lot of fat in it'. Another waitress came over straight away after and repeated the same thing. (It felt very condescending - we are fully aware it's a fatty cut of meat but it does have to edible and at the same time occasionally meat cuts are too fatty - nobody's fault). No apology was given at any point and when dishes were taken away we were asked 'so everything was OK for you?', which was a bit strange given the feedback we had already given.Fortunately, everybody else's meals were good, and it was the customer service which was lacking which spoiled the occasion for my Dad. I live locally and based on our experience, I would think twice before visiting again.

Another wonderful meal at Porto. Had the choice of sitting inside.or on the roof terrace so went outside as it was a lovely night.Unfortunately no view but its a lovely wee space they have.We both had the cheese soufle to start and it's was amazing so light and fluffy.Hubby had the sea bass and I had the fillet steak cooked medium rare. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. Highly recommend booking in advance as its so good its always busy

Myself and my fiancé have been here every time we visit the lakes and it’s fantastic every time. The food is excellent every time we have been. This time we both had the lamb dish for mains and I had the cod fritters for a starter. The atmosphere is fine dining but relaxed at the same time, we were not rushed and there was no time limit. The staff and service is great and I’d recommend to anyone visiting Windermere area. Our favourite restaurant

The food again was delicious!Service and staff very polite and helpful. We had the lamb koftas and chicken livers to start and we couldn’t believe the quality and presentation….not outdone by the 3 different main meals, lamb, steak and chicken. These were exceptional in taste.Overall good value for money Will be back in September.

Go there but book ahead they are so flexible and helpful and will do all they can to accommodate. Oh by the way the food is great.

Made reservations here after seeing all of the great comments on here, weren’t disappointed. Lovely, small bistro, friendly staff. Fantastic food and reasonably priced, the lamb was beautiful, as was the lemon brulee. Definitely recommend if you are in the area. Booking in advance is a must; the amount of people that were turned away that had not booked expecting to get in at 8:00pm on a summer’s evening!

This place is hands down a top 5* restaurant. I would visit again and I don’t often do this which says something. The staff are attentive and the food is outstanding - the chef clearly pays attention to the minor details. The experience was fabulous and perfect for a romantic evening. You MUST book the private balcony which has a lovely view of the street. Not to be missed!

We booked a table at Porto as we had read that staff wear masks. Only one waitress was wearing her mask correctly, one waitress was exempt and two wore them under their noses. This said, the meal was delicious but we felt uncomfortable at a time when infections are rising.

Very disappointing compared to the rating given.We were very rushed, The lamb main had no taste at all and my mushroom risotto tasted only of garlic creamed rice We did mention our views to the staff member in all we were in and out in under 1 hour.

My partner and I had an evening meal at Porto and cannot fault it! The staff were great and service was quick! Lucky for us the sun was shining and we had a table on the roof terrace, lovely up there!We had the cod fish cakes and lamb kofta to start - delicious! We both had the steak for main and were really impressed! Will definitely visit here again!

Very enjoyable lunch with the family, carte dishes were actually better than I was expecting. Child friendly with a decent children's menu too. Service OK although little niggles like a 5 minute wait after 3 desserts had arrived for the final one to be delivered, with no apology.Would happily go back though if in the area.

Arrived at the restaurant with no reservation. They were fully booked but “lucky” for us there was a no show !!!!!Staff friendly and served drinks promptly. Meal came and it was a huge disappointment. Very little food on both plates. My wife’s meal was cold and had to be sent back. We were not asked if the food was ok before or after it was replaced. My wife went to the toilet upstairs after her meal she came disgusted at the state of the toilets. The main door of the kitchen on the landing was opened, the kitchen looked filthy, messy, untidy and unhygienic.The cost of the food was acceptable and not overpriced, the service was ok but we felt like they wanted us to go to get the next people in.

Arrived on time to find a clean and classy place.Ordered starters and 45 minutes later the scallops and kofta arrived. Very tasty and well presented however the wait was terrible.A further 45 minutes and the mains arrived. By now we had concluded we were getting a taste of the staff shortage that the country is feeling.The mains 10oz steak and chicken were once again tasty and ample portions however the wait had killed the atmosphere and we passed on deserts.A couple of table downstairs for any needing ground floor access however the main restaurant is upstairs.Definitely higher prices than most in the area. I'd try elsewhere.Taking on as many covers as they can to recoup the covid losses however 2 hrs is a long wait.

What can I say, this restaurant is an absolute gem in Bowness. We’ve been before but it never ceases to impress. I felt covid secure the entire time, good special distancing between tables, amazing staff and even better food. Everything was effortless and we had a lovely time. If you go anywhere in Bowness, let it be here.

Amazing food, real quality hone cooked food and exceptional service. I had the lamb for mail and it was melt in the mouth. We finished our meal with creme brûlée with was sooooo good but had a cheese board just because we were on holiday. Really good food Alfie a reasonable price

We had read the reviews on Tripadvisor and went ahead to book Porto ahead of time. We were seated in the secluded rooftop patio which was away from the crowded streets. Highlights of our meal included the beautifully cooked scallops and the lamb chumps. Highly recommend Porto!

An excellent evening from start to finish. Service was great and the food was better. Really nice inside the restaurant too. It’s not a cheap night but would highly recommend.

Whilst it is appreciated that restaurants are just opening up I felt they were cramming tables in as table spacing was close and whilst staff were wearing masks it could have been better. Food was of a gastropub standard. On leaving there was a party of maybe 8 people inside by the door waiting for their table with no social distancing being followed and no effort to allow us to pass to leave.

We booked here as it was the only place with a table in the weeks before we travelled. We were absolutely delighted with the whole meal.We had two small and tired dogs with us who were welcome downstairs. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the tables are well spaced apart.The food was delicious! Scallop starter was spot on, as was the steak. Service was great too. All in all, we would come back again next year.

We booked a meal in Porto after reading the reviews on restaurants in the area and we are glad we did. The service was perfect with friendly, welcoming staff and the food was beautifully cooked.

We ate here for our 24th wedding Anniversary, the staff were excellent..very attentive and warm.The food was very good I had the Thai fritters, Rib eye and sticky toffee pudding my wife had the Souffle, chicken supreme and lemon creme brulee, we also had a nice bottle of Gavi.For the quality I felt the price was on point, we will definitely return when in the area.

Lovely food in a restaurant with a nice atmosphere. We ate here on Sunday afternoon - there was plenty of choice as they did offer a Sunday lunch menu - but we chose to eat from the a la carte menu. We had scallops to start which were delicious but these were the only thing that were a little overpriced at £11 for 3 scallops (which were on the small side). The rest of the food however was worth every penny. We had the monk fish and chips and a fillet steak which was perfectly cooked. The staff were very friendly with the right level of attentiveness. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Visiting Bowness on a short break We had prebooked Porto for dinner. The meal exceeded our expectation, starters of twice cooked cheese souffle and sauted chicken livers with blackberries were excellent as were the chicken supreme and lamb chump. The staff were friendly and efficient and contributed to a laid back atmosphere. The menu is not huge but seems to cover most bases and is imaginative with some nice touches. The restaurant is very popular and I would recommend booking in advance. At present it is online only. Thanks Porto for a great evening

We had a beautiful three course meal in Porto this week. The food was exceptional. We had the soufflé and the Thai cod fritters to start, the sea bass with arancini for the meal with sticky toffee pudding and chocolate deluxe for dessert. Every course and dish was superb.The service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Highly recommended

A lovely restaurant in the centre of Windermere, a short walk from the ferry pier. Very friendly staff and delicious, varied menu both for meat lovers and seafood fans. My husband loved his rib eye steak and I was thrilled to see they served scallops which is my favourite starter. I followed it with a fillet of sea bass with a lovely crispy skin, prawns and a delicious seafood sauce. Definitely recommend!

My husband and I came to windermere for our anniversary and after searching all the local restaurants and menus I settled on this one, I'm so glad I did! Wow the food was wonderful, I had sea bass and gnocchi but it cane with so much more wonderful bits that I didnt realise, just try it you wont be disappointed. At the end of our meal they brought out a little plate that had happy anniversary written in chocolate and a little chocolate brownie. We were so surprised as neither of us had mentioned it, so we can only assume they matlyne had heard us talking about our anniversary maybe. It was a lovely touch. I would definitely recommend this place and I cant wait to visit again

Second visit to this little gem and yet again didn’t disappoint albeit the service was a little hit and miss and did felt rushed at times the food was excellent would definitely recommend and return.

Chose this restaurant 1) for the reviews and 2) for the fact that it’s called Porto as the city is one of my favourites. The food is delicious, good choice of wine and staff friendly. Cute little restaurant down a cobbled street, one could feel like they’re abroad on a nice day in this little bistro. I wouldn’t say it had a Porto or Portuguese theme though, not sure if they were aiming for that, but either way lovely place would come back. I had the lamb which was served perfectly

My wife and I visited the Porto Restaurant in December and had one of the best meals we have ever eaten. We both had the cheese souffle for starter and I had the lamb and my wife had the pork and they were both outstanding dishes.

Service was spot on, not too much. Left us to our meal and evening but was attentive enough when needed.Would definitely recommend!

We went here to celebrate whilst on holiday. The food was delicious (I had the monkfish scampi & OH had the steak). For pudding he had the lemon creme brûlée & I had mango passionfruit & raspberry sorbets. Delicious. Nice relaxed atmosphere where you weren’t rushed and could just enjoy being out together in a nice restaurant with good food!

We ate here last night for our delayed anniversary meal after loosing one of our jack russells on our wedding anniversary in september. Communication prior 100%, table and welcome to our other old 17 year old doggy amazing. Food and service outstanding. A +++++++++++++++ we will be back simply lovely in all ways. Thank u sooo muchx

We had an excellent meal here last week whilst visiting the area. Although we qualified for the early bird menu nothing took our fancy so we went with the A La Carte Menu. My partner and I enjoyed Tempura Haddock, Veggie Cesar Salad, The Mushroom Risotto and 'The Pork". All fantastic quality and very tasty. Washed down with a lovely bottle of Primitivo. The service was excellent and staff very attentive.

We had pre-booked for lunch as we had been travelling and had limited time to find somewhere in Bowness. Welcomed on arrival and seated at a small table for two. We ordered scallops, fish and chips and lamb. The food was very nice, no complaints really but we were not blown away. Whilst we were eating they received a delivery of beers which were carried in past our table by a man who was not wearing a mask. The collection of this delivery was also taken by a member of staff without a mask (pretty much within inches of where we were sitting), this made us feel uncomfortable . Whether or not the delivery team don't HAVE to wear a mask the restaurant could apply certain safety measures when people are eating. In particular ALL staff should be wearing a mask at all times, especially in such close proximity to customers and the kitchen. Enjoyed the food but not sure we would return.

Had an evening meal here whilst staying in Bowness. Although the menu choices were not extensive, the two course meal was really lovely. Although the drinks were somewhat expensive, it did not detract from the overall experience, Friendly and efficient staff and good Covid precautions in place. We will certainly look to eat here again the next time we stay in Bowness

We seem to have caught Porto on a bad day. Having read other reviews, we were much looking forward to a special lunch but we were very disappointed with a limited lunch menu. Atmosphere was also very odd with the staff clearly distracted, and mostly absent. We ordered burgers, which were good, if overpriced. Not fine dining! Sadly mine had the paper still on the burger patty, and though they replaced it and gave us our cup of tea and coke for free, it all pointed to a very distracted team. The staff also need to wear their masks covering their noses or there is no point! Won't be returning.

We booked a table here as special treat whilst on holiday during October half term. I booked a table through email and it was confirmed really quickly. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The restaurant felt very Covid safe but still had a lovely atmosphere. We ordered off the Early Bird menu and our food was delicious. Couldn’t fault it. Our son had the sausage & mash, and they kindly swapped the peas for broccoli without any trouble. Would definitely recommend Porto for a special dinner and child friendly too.

Food was ok but overpriced. We had sandwiches and paid £2.50 extra each for a 'small chips' and got about 6 each. Service was a tad slow too. Disappointing.

Family of four made very welcome. Quick service and good food. Kids menu good and always a nice finish with a kids sticky toffee pudding.

Wasn’t too sure but the wife read some of the reviews and thought we’d give it a try, what a surprise! Staff very polite and efficient and very COVID safe.We both opted for the soup which was the sweet potato and chilli, and not being a fan of sweet potato (based on a previous experience somewhere else) I was not expecting much, how wrong I was, it was really nice and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.I then chose the steak burger, again I had gone off burgers a bit as they always seem to be the same but wow, I was totally surprised, excellent. The wife went for the risotto, she also thoroughly enjoyed it.Really pleased we went in and can’t recommend enough.Make sure you book beforehand and receive a acknowledgment of your booking as you might not get in otherwise.

Great atmosphere and fantastic food (particularly the goats cheese soufflé). Staff were attentive but not overbearing. Cocktails were really good. Prices were very fair. Overall an excellent meal so I’d thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

Managed to spend a few socially distanced days in the Lakes. As it was recently our 40th wedding anniversary decided to go out to dinner at our favourite restaurant - Porto Great decision! The welcome was warm, the food was gorgeous, and the Covid compliance very reassuring.Thank you Nina and Slav, we will be back ASAP

We made a reservation to celebrate our ruby wedding Sunday 18th Oct. I mentioned the special occasion when i booked and received confirmation back. I specifically asked for a good table. When we arrived we were met with a young man, who told us we could have any table. He didn't check my reservation either. We ordered the traditional Sunday lunch, which if i could give two different ratings I would give a 5 for the food. Well presented, very tasty and plentiful.Unfortunately my overall rating is average purely because, there was no acknowledgement of our celebration. No effort was made whatsoever with regard the table setting. Dont get me wrong i didn't expect anything for free, but an acknowledgement of the occasion would have been fitting. We left feeling quite let down! Like I say compliments to the chef for the food, but the serving staff need a little more finesse and attention to detail when dealing with reservations.

Reservamos en Porto después de leer buenas críticas y no nos decepcionó. El servicio fue impecable, la comida excelente. Hay lugares para comer más baratos en la ciudad, pero si estás buscando algo un poco especial, este es el mejor. Ubicación central, muchos bares alrededor para tomar una copa y una copa.

We visit every time we come to the lakes due to the food and service being so good! This visit did not disappoint. My partner is gluten intolerant and the staff were very attentive to this adapting the menu to suit him. Food was delicious as always. No doubt we will be back again ob our next visit.

Realmente disfruté de la comida de primera calidad aquí, especialmente entrantes y platos principales. Hay una buena selección en el menú. El cordero disfrutó especialmente. Servicio eficiente también. Definitivamente regresaremos. Pensé que el vino por copa era un poco caro, pero feliz de beber sidra local después de un gran día en las colinas.
