Portknockie Fish and Chip Shop in Moray

Moved to the area 4 months ago and this is easily the best chippy in the area. Tried all the rest and this is the best. Great menu and food.

I’m a local and love the food here, it’s pricey compared to others in the area but the quality of food more than makes up for that. Unfortunately, 3 of the 4 last visits I have had missing items which are not discovered till I’m back home. Which combined with the phone ordering system and huge queue outside took an extra 30-40mins each time to rectify while the rest of the food got stone cold. The most recent visit I was actually made out to be lying and that it was my mistake. I appreciate it’s a stressful time just now but I was truly taken aback that day and as such will not be returning. I will miss having the unique pop pop chicken.

Such a good variety. Delicious food. Best chips from a chip shop I’ve tried in a long time! And they do generous sizes of sides of mushy peas and curry sauce etc.

Great coastal village chipper - excellent quality, well organized, ordered via phone and picked up at the allotted time slot. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

This place has to be vying for best fish n chips in Scotland this year. Absolutely spot on and that’s during restrictions. Spot on for perfect fish n chips and the service is good but also the wee shop in a wee out the way village adds to it. Great value for money and also an easy to use phone system that allows you to dial in for the treat of the week.

I can honestly say this is the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. Having lived in Cornwall for a number of years, I've tried my fair share of "award winning" fish and chips, but this was incredible - fresh flaky fish, crispy batter, chips that were the perfect combination of chunky, fluffy and crispy, perfectly mushed peas that tasted fresh - I could go on. We parked up in the harbour car park and watched the waves crashing as we ate - we couldn't have been more pleased.

We preordered our food as they have staggered opening hours at present. We picked our fish suppers up and drove down to the harbour and sat in the car and ate our tea there watching the sea. Food was amazing. Such light batter! Delicious.

Fabulous fresh fish! Thoroughly enjoyed this treat on our weekend in Cullen. Be sure to book in advance. We managed to place an order on the Friday night, but not so lucky on the Saturday as it was really busy.

We ordered in the morning as required and everything was ready for collection at the agreed time in the evening. Efficient Covid19 practices were in place and staff were delightful. The meal was superb.

Ring up and order as the fish and chips are sublime. We’re on our holiday and it was a fantastic treat.

Good observation for the Covid-19 requirements. Haven't had a fish supper for a while but this was as good as it gets. Need to call early in the day to get the time you want. It is only open for a few hours and there is always a queue.

Its been a long long time since I've enjoyed a fish supper as much. Be aware, due to covid you just can't turn up at the shop, but have to telephone and place your order. They will then tell you the next available slot. I had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes, but as we were staying nearby that was no hardship and returned later. Queuing is outside in time slot order. May be an issue if its heavy rain but waited only about five or six minutes. Only one customer in shop at a time. Hand sanitiser stations at the door and inside. Shop very clean. Posh fish supper which included, tartare sauce, mushy peas and two pickled onions for £8.50. I've had more chips elsewhere but quantity is not always a good thing. Enjoyed it so much that we decided to get another at the end of our holiday but were disappointed that they were fully booked!! Cant speak for the rest of the menu but would happily recommend the fish and chips.

A M A Z I N G Best fish and chips we've had. We were here on holiday but visiting friends too. They recommended the pop pop chicken which was superb. Fish really fresh and batter was just perfectly fried. Kids meals were really generous too. Current circumstances means you need to phone ahead to order. Enjoy!

what a fantastic place we went twice it was so good. You had to ring a and order the meal earlier in the day but that was no hardship. The batter on the fish is so light and can't wait to go back

Fantastic go regularly,the Pop Pop chicken is amazing. Everything cooked fresh to order, unlike many other chip shops. Place is exceptionally clean and staff are friendly and welcoming Highly recommend it.

There's nothing wrong with the fish and chips here but there's nothing amazing either. Overwhelming lack of flavour, chips were dry, fish tasteless and even though we had salt and vinegar we had to add more to get them to taste of anything. And pretty costly too. No return visit from me.

Had take away haddock & chips whilst on jan hols (yes hols in jan in scotland !)Chip shop exceptionally clean , food cooked fresh and staff friendly.2 x haddock and regular chips total £14.00.Food good but not exceptional , batter a little thinner than i'm used to.Would i recommend -yes of course but bigger portions and lower cost at same standard or better down south .....

Amazing fish and chips. The best we have ever had. We went for the posh fish supper and it was very good value. The mushy peas were just right and the batter on the fish was light and crispy. Staff were very friendly and efficient. I can see why it is so popular. Will definitely visit again when we are next in the area.

Absolutely lovely haddock and chips. The shop is very clean and modern. The service was friendly and the food delicious. Everything is cooked fresh and you have to wait a few minutes for this but it's well worth the short wait. Will definitely return next time we're lucky enough to be in the area.

been using this establishment since it opened. come here on holiday 2 or 3 times a year. they are the best fish suppers you can imagine, and staff are excellent.

We had fish suppers from this chip shop while staying nearby on holiday. Fish was large and tasted very fresh. Chips were perfectly cooked. It was not greasy and was a generous portion. One of the best we've tasted. Would definitely go again if in the area.

We had two fantastic meals from this Fish and Chips Shop, we thoroughly enjoyed it, especially my husband, the nearest Gluten Free Chip shop is about 30 minutes from us, so this was a rare treat. Staff were lovely and helpful.

Our first visit to this chip shop didn’t disappoint. As expected it was very busy but the food was worth the wait. Memorises of my father’s chip shop came flooding back as I waited. Take away only and there appeared to be a lot of telephone orders being processed.

If your anywhere near Portknockie Fish & Chip Shop get yourself there. Delicious food made to order. I’m not a great chippy fan but if I lived in the area I would be! Thoroughly recommend.

We have been on holiday in Fordyce for the past week and decided to have fish and chips for our last evening meal. Walked from Cullen to Portknockie, arrived just as fish and chip shop opened. There was a queue, waited 15 minutes but well worth the wait.

Do not miss a visit to this if you are anywhere in the vicinity, the Cullen fish and chip shop gets good reviews but this is WAY better. The fish is superb you will not find a better fish supper.

Went on a busy Saturday tea-time, so weren't sirprised to see it queued out the door. It is a small shop, when you give your order you are given a ticket and your number is called when ready, we spent the waiting time standing outside chatting to folk - it was very nice. The fish and chips were excellent and worth waiting for.

I was staying at the hotel opposite, the Victoria hotel which was great, the landlady recommended I pop over and grab my dinner to take back and eat on their restaurant. The food was lovely and the portions very generous. Polite hygienic staff, cannot fault it. Excellent

First visit here and lovely surprise to find such a clean, bright place and welcoming staff. We ordered twenty minutes before closing time and were delighted to be given spare "pop pop chicken" which the owner - Ian - said we should sample in addition to our fish and chips and scampi - all were delicious

Tonight my husband and I bought dinner from this previously TA recommended place. It delivered and more. We shared a piece of crumbed haddock, a seafood selection and large chips - yum. The food was freshly cooked, not oily. The chips, if they wee done up in news paper, I would have been transported to my childhood. Loved the food and worth the short drive from Port Gordon.

Went for an exploration of the North Coast and decided to try this chip shop after reading the reviews on trip advisor...WoW!! Well worth the diversion to experience the best cod & chips (with a side of their Pop Pop Chicken) I’ve had in good few years. Will definitely go back again for a chipper picnic! Try it...you won’t be disappointed

The locals come from afar to Portknockie for their fish and chips, even though every local town and village has their own chippie. The fish is fresh and cooked in clean vegetable oil and they have a large selection over and above the modest but delightful haddock to suit all tastes and ages.

I would like to say I have had a read of the poor ratings and can’t believe them.

Returned again for the 3rd year in a row great fish and chips and pop pop chicken. Shop looks amazing and clean and when busy well worth the wait and a bonus if the suns out getting to eat down at the harbour.

Well, their`s no bones about it ..this chipper is excellent...lovely bit of fish & a good helping of chips. You may have to `queue/wait a while ` but well worth it only `drawback` is ….it has no `café` where you could have a seat/cup of tea along with your `supper`!! Regardless...gladly recommend this Fish & Chip shop.

Went to this chipper twice during our stay in Portknockie and was not disappointed. The food is always freshly cooked to order, so having to take a number and wait a while was no problem at all.

Very fresh fish in crispy batter, I had haddock and chips and it was perfect. My partner went for the seafood selection and it was nice but he could have done with a bit more, if you get the seafood it would be a good starter between 2.

This seems to be the place to get food in Portknockie (a very quiet place) and whilst it was slightly expensive for fish'n'chips it was certainly very nice. As far as I could tell it was just a take-away though

We have enjoyed some excellent fish and chips whilst in Scotland, and these are up there at the top, as good a chippie as any in the UK! Huge choice,cooked to perfection. This place is run like a tight ship, we were made to feel so welcome and enjoyed the experience so much we visited 3 times during our week in Portknockie! This is the best place to eat take away fish n chips! Crispy fish, with chunky delicious chips. Big portions, and nice staff!!

Having read several TA reviews decided as we were staying in Portknockie to try out the chip shop. Having checked out the menu on line I knew that I was going to have to try the Haggis pudding and so glad I did it was fantastic. Not something I can get at my local chip shop which is a shame. The opening hours may catch people out who are from big cities as they only open from 16:30 through to 20:30. However you can ring and place your order in advance and tell them when you would like to pick it up. The quality of food and service was high and somewhere I would recommend with no hesitation.

We are in this area frequently with four generations of family. Have been seen n tried everywhere. This is a breath of fresh air. Super busy, super efficient,super friendly and super suppers. Well done to everyone.

We were in Portknockie on holiday, and called in for 2 fish suppers, and a haggis supper. All the meals were superb, cooked to perfection, and the staff, although busy at the time were very pleasant and cheerful. Would recommend this place if you are in the area. Worth googling first as when we were there in February, it was shut on Sundays and Mondays.

This Chippy was that good we visited 3 times in the week we were on holiday! Must tell you that I am a Fish & Chip expert. I have been known to drive 100 mile round trip to visit my favourite Chip Shop and this one is one of the best. Staff brilliant, spotlessly clean and the product as good as anywhere I have eaten. Freshly cooked food, and fresh fish. Staff friendly and efficient. You do have to wait for things to be cooked, but so much better than being in the heater for hours.

What a find this restaurant has been for our week in Portknockie. Excellent customer service matched by the food, which was fantastic!

I spent two nights in the Victoria Hotel after travelling to the north of Scotland. The chip shop is right opposite and the first thing you notice is the constant stream of customers from the moment it opens.

Portknockie Chippy is a very busy wee chippy. The service is first class and the chip shop is very clean and tidy. Staff are polite and pleasant. The fish is always excellent and the BBQ Cheese Chicken Fillet burger is a must if you have a big appetite. We also tried some of the sides such as curry sauce, tartar sauce and garlic mayo which were all very nice.

Honestly the best chippy in Scotland, hands down! A superb menu of traditional plus new and interesting things. The PopPop (salt & pepper) crumb is amazing on pretty much everything. Only issue is once you’ve been to this chippy it ruins you for going anywhere wkse! Service from Moria & Ian is exceptional too. Everything cooked in rapeseed oil, so good for veggies.

We rent out a holiday cottage in Portknockie and at the top of our list of things to do is “ must try our local fish and chip shop”. I’m pleased to say most do and are in agreement,,,DELICIOUS ! Thank you for providing a great asset to a wonderful little fishing village.

Visited this establishment on 2 occasions during a week spent in a cottage in Portknockie. On each occasion the food served was excellent and freshly made.

Best chip shop in he north east of Scotland. Staff excellent, very efficient and hellpful. Would definately recommend here to anyone visiting this area. You will not be disappointed. Lots of local produce, fish excellent , home made meals too.

Visited the chip shop in September 2018 as I was staying along the road in Buckie and it was the nearest recommended one on tripadvisor. I come from Glasgow where there is no shortage of chip shops. However, this was the best fish supper I have had in years. The batter was perfect, the fish was done just right and they didn't hold back on the chip portions. The best part was - it wasn't greasy!!

The queue outside the door tells you the food inside is going to good! We had to wait 20 mins for our food which is nothing for the quality of food and the amount of people they served. The food was so fresh and delicious and the staff were so helpful and friendly. Would recommend this to everyone! We are visiting again and we are telling everyone about this wee gem.

Just moved to the area and was recommended to us for a chippy tea. Husband had chicken and chips which he said was succulent and plenty of it. I had the fish supper which was absolutely delish, best chips in ever had too. Will definitely return. Shop is very clean with lovely staff even though it's very busy.

Excellent as always will return and eat here every year when we come for our holidays. Even cater well for my father in law who has to have gluten free, which is difficult to find in England.

I lived in Portknockie for about a year. The first time I had fish and chips I found that it was way too greasy and deterred me from having more. A few days before I left however I was tempted to try again, and I did. Much better! The shop itself is clean and the staff, while frantically busy, are wonderful.

Wenn man in der Nähe ist und Fisch und Chips gerne isst, dann ist hier eine gute Adresse. Es gibt aber keine Sitzplätze im dem Lokal, aber am Stand genug davon oder gleich am Anfang von Findochty.

Used this chippers a couple of times when we were staying in Portknockie. Got a lovely fish supper and it was a very good portion.

We had a lovely lot of fish and chips and sausage and chips BUT my vege burger which they promised was egg free (as I’m allergic) was fortunately served in a bun that was not egg free! I realised after the first mouthful - This is a real problem and I’ve yet to feel the full effects (as we only went an hour ago)which could make me very ill. Disappointed

Fresh and faultless - well worth the wait. Next time I would phone ahead. We walked from Cullen along the old railway line (just over a mile) and were ready for this treat.

This is one of the best chippy's i have visited. The fish was nice and the chips were tasty and not too greasy. I also tried the pop pop chicken which was delicious.

Perhaps the best Fish & Chips I have tasted in the UK. You have to be prepared to wait for your order as all the food is freshly cooked. The operation is spotless, very slick and friendly. It is clearly evident that the staffs concern is for the satisfaction of its customers. We visited 4 times over our 2 week stay in the area and will certainly return in 2019.

I have travelled all over the world and I highly recommend this establishment, food is well cooked and the menu has something for everyone. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable on dishes. It's run more like a restaurant than a fish and chip shop. Very clean. This Australian gives it 5 stars.

We were in Portknockie looking for the Bow Fiddle Rock after our jaunt along the cliffs we began to get peckish. Spotted the Fish & Chip sign and said to my friend hope they cook their chips in separate frier? To my delight not only do then in a separate fried but they also did Gluten Free supper etc. Can I say my Fish supper was amazing i could taste the sea off the Fish and the batter was golden and crispy. Are we glad we came across this little gem... x

Discovered this wee gem through word of mouth. We now regularly visit this fantastic fish and chip shop. The staff are very friendly. Can be very busy at weekends but definitely worth the wait. Recommend this to anyone that loves a great fish supper!!!

Returning to Hopeman after a day meeting with friends in Cullen, we took a detour to Portknockie to have a takeaway tea.

Stumbled on this chippy and glad we did. Great chips but be mindful, it’s very very popular and catch it at the wrong time (early tea time) and you will have to queue up and wait.Strict serving in order even if you only want chips. Thoroughly recommended.
