Portals Place in Hartlepool

We have tried many restaurants when visiting family when I come up from London must say that the food is exceptional and the staff are very friendly especially the man that works the floor would recommend this restaurant to everyone

We had lunch with friends there yesterday (table of 5) and I could not fault a thing. The staff were super friendly, the food was amazing, the wine was very nice. Go and give it a try, you'll love it!

I had been looking for somewhere special for my daughter’s birthday meal and eventually booked Portals Place which we had not been to before.So glad I did - what a lovely restaurant! Evening special menu is brilliant for choice and very reasonably priced, food was delicious, attentive staff and view from window over the marina lovely.We will be back here as regulars for sure - well done Portals Place.

We spent 2 nights at the premier inn on the marina and ate here twice. It was superb. The food was great value and the staff outstanding. The whole evening was wonderful and it was a really atmospheric restaurant. Completely recommend this restaurant.

First visit and the restaurant was very welcoming and cool on a hot day. However we waited 20 minutes and had to ask 3 times for our food order to be taken whilst other tables who were seated after us had their orders taken. The food itself was plentiful and tasty however the service wasn't there. Whilst I fully appreciate the current circumstances and the fact they may be running on less staff the fact it took 3 times for our order to be taken. Judging from other reviews it appears it hasn't been just myself thats had the same experience

We've just had a gorgeous meal at Portals place. The food was amazing the service was brilliant. Fresh cooked food no boil in the bag here. That good we're coming back tomorrow for something different. Can really recommend this this place.

We went here on a Friday evening. We booked an early table and were seated as soon as we got there. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was stunningly presented. We ordered our food with ease and it arrived in a good time, it looked and tasted beautiful, really couldn't fault the meals at all. We had a really good experience up until a large group turned up (3 tables of 6 made up of the same group), and sadly all attention went on them. We were left with our empty plates for well over 15 minutes, and ended up having to ask for the bill twice, as the first time got no response. We would have liked to stay for deserts, but felt it was time to leave. I understand big groups take up a lot of time and attention, but we were paying customers too. I'm sure service is normally good based on the reviews here, however, this was not the case for us.

We’ve visited the new terrace area a few times and has been exceptional every time, a lovely area to sit with a glass of wine on a nice day. We then visited the restaurant last night, the new decor is great and the food was as good as always. The place was absolutely bouncing and it had a lovely atmosphere. Great food, great staff, great place. Can’t wait to go again.

Worst restaurant experience ever! Waited 45 minutes for our starters even though at this time the restaurant wasn’t even full. It then took them another 30 minutes to clear out dirty plates, with no apology for the slow service. After being in the restaurant for 2 hours, there was still no sign of our mains to which the manager replied “it’s been a busy night sorry for the delay”, even though other tables received their starters and mains before us after coming in after us. We ordered water for the table when we arrived which, as you can expect, didn’t arrive for two hours - and this was only when prompted. When the waitress came over the glasses were so dirty there were lipstick stains on the rim. After all of this we didn’t even get a sincere apology. From the outset staff were rude and lacked professionality. I will never be coming back again.

Firsty night out in - service was excellent which always is. I had the mussels and wife the prawns which were great - Wifes pork was very dry even though wrapped in streaky bacon - Lamb was unreal and a large portion. Will be back

Had a wonderful dinner on Saturday. Food was very good as was the service. Portals Place follow Covid guidelines.

This is my favourite restaurant in Hartlepool. I have several food intolerances (including dairy, eggs, garlic and more) and can find it difficult to find a restaurant where I can find a menu that can be adapted to suit my needs - not here. The chef, Tony, is able to adjust and adapt the menu to accommodate my needs. The food is wonderful. I have smoked salmon and feta salad or crab and fish cakes for starters, Main course is either the fish catch of the day or goat's cheese tart salad, without the pastry case . Dessert is a dairy free brownie and ice cream. Great friendly service from Alysha, Sofie and Michelle, wonderful food and great prices - what more could you want. Don't look any further - give Portal's Place a visit

Small wedding reception. Food was amazing. Service was outstanding couldn’t fault the evening. Thank you to the staff for making our day seem kinda normal despite the current situation, and restrictions.

Visiting Hartlepool Marina we selected Portal's Place for a meal out after looking at the menu online. There seemed to be something for everyone. We were not disappointed. We all had plenty of choice and the food was tasty, nicely presented and priced fairly. In these covid times, the restaurant was well spaced and staff abiding by sensible safety systems. We enjoyed a lovely meal and will definitely return. A special mention for the size and quality of the cheese board dessert. Definitely a highlight and very well received. Well done Portal's Place.

I visited PP on Friday evening and was extremely impressed with the high level of customer service and quality food. Could not fault the service as bar manager was very accommodating by keeping the bar open until 11pm, which was really appreciated. Will definitely be visiting again.

We stumbled across this restaurant for a late lunch and are very glad we did. The staff were very accommodating, service was excellent, and the food was really good, flavourful and reasonably priced. A place we will definetly return to and recommend.

Arrived at 5.30pm and it was full by 6pm. Deservedly so. Food was tasty, beautifully presented and reasonably priced. Staff were attentive and friendly. It also felt really Covid safe. A nice start to our holiday 👍

Another amazing meal at the Finest restaurant in Hartlepool, the Staff was amazing, helpful and friendly throughout and the food was divine ! Compliments to the Chefs and Staff.

Came to Portals on Saturday night with my partner for our 3rd visit throughout August and I can say that every visit has been absolutely wonderful, the service is always amazing and incredibly welcoming and the food was out of this world. Definitely believe it’s one of the best restaurants in the town and will definitely be returning! Thank you portals and staff for a fab experience, we will be back :)

I managed to secure a table every week at Portals for the governments eat out to help out scheme. I cannot praise this little gem of a restaurant enough, it's by far the best in town. I visited with different friends /family each week and each meal has been delicious. I would recommend the Moules and Surf & Turf, just wow!Staff have been brilliant in what you can see has been a very busy time for them. They are always so friendly and helpful. Again, thank you Portals for a lovely experience.

Visited Portals this week with my family who were visiting the North East. The staff were great and went out of their way to accommodate the large party and children. The food was superb, the seafood linguine ( al dente pasta , lots of tasty fresh seafood and the extra hint of chilli I asked for!) was the best I’ve tasted and even the kids cleared their plates. It was very busy with the August offer being on, but the staff didn’t seem too flustered. I’d highly recommend, and my visiting family were very impressed with the quality of the food. It’s great to have a nice place to take people without having to travel far.

My wife and went to portals place on Wednesday lunch the place was full we had a very good time the service was good and the food was very nice couldn't ask for better will definitely come back

Me and my family went to portals for the first time on Tuesday the 28 book a table at 6:30 the front of house was wonderful and the food was very nice thank you all for a wonderful evening will definitely come back

Very good menu. Staff are warm and welcoming. Good choice of food and alcoholic drinks. One of the nicest restaurants in Hartlepool. Will be back.

Visited on Monday evening at 6pm the restaurant was busy but the service was fantastic. All of the meals were piping hot and fresh and full of flavour. Have been twice in the last few weeks as the food has been so nice. We didn’t really have much room for desert but the sticky toffee pudding is by far the best around so couldn’t resist.

During the eat out scheme we have been to a few places, but portals is by far the best! Food was absolutely amazing, so tasty! Waited a while for dessert order to be taken, but apart from that couldn’t fault the food or staff. We will definitely be coming back!

What a shame, we were really looking forward to visiting after reading good reviews. We visited at lunchtime,26 Aug. We were booked for 1pm and were seated immediately. Place itself is ok, but we were in an off-shoot on what appears to be the 'bar' area and not the main restaurant room, so little benefit from the general ambience, but ok that's not the main thing....We ordered a starter and main and drinks. Drinks arrived quickly and the server was very pleasant, however we waited then for 40mins for starters. No bread on the table at all. Our starter, Garlic Mushroom on bruschetta was terrible. Cold and bland, the sauce very thin and this soaked the one tiny bruschetta to the point it couldn't be picked up, it just went to mush. The mushrooms were tasteless. We left more than half of them.We waited a further 35mins for the main course. My wife had chicken breast in peppercorn sauce, with chunky chips. A meagre portion of chicken and the sauce was thin / watery to be blunt and didn't really have a good taste. I had pizza, which I couldn't eat. It was poor, I've had better 99p supermarket budget frozen pizza's.. it was really terrible.Needless to say, we were very dissapointed and we weren't alone. The couple dining on the next table weren't impressed with their seafood and vegetables, both left more than half and exited quickly. Another table had a lady asking what an odd looking addition was in the vegetable bowl- something indistinguishable as veg.. everyone was very polite and just paid and left.Overall, very dissapointed with our experience today. We will not be returning. We were there nearly 2hrs with waiting ti.es and neither of us ate our meals, we went on to a local chip shop and ate in the car instead.You have been warned.

My little family of 3 went to portals for what I can only describe as a gorgeous meal. My little 3 year old loves the place and the staff always make sure there’s a colouring activity ready to occupy her, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The atmosphere and food was fantastic, we really couldn’t ask for more. We will be back as soon as we can.

Our favourite restaurant in Hartlepool since it opened! We visited on a very, very, very busy day (it was the governments eat out scheme). Food was as excellent as a quieter day and service was just as good. We were seated in the bar area which was just as good as the restaurant and a pleasant change. The ambience was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. A great setting and a total must when looking for somewhere to dine in Hartlepool.

A lovely location on the edge of the dockFood was good though we waited 20 mins between our course which felt a little too long.Hard to catch the attention of staff for more drinks. I get the feeling that the staff aren't trained well.Some one had choked , some one else had dead flies on their windowsill and so, all in all it wasn't the relaxing , comfortable and pleasant experience we had expected.

We went as a family youngest aged 16 years. We all ordered rib eye steaks . My grandson on eating his first piece of steak said it was tough and start to choke a little. The reason being there was a piece of string in his steak holding it together. It was a large piece of string around the meat. I immediately returned the meal. The waitress and another staff member were appalled. It was replaced. By the time replacement received the rest of our party had finished. He then ate his meal and we waited. The whole experience was spoiled. On receiving the bill I expressed my disappointment. The waitress advised me nothing could be done. The meal had been eaten and we got 50% off . This was discount allowed by the government and portals place would be reimbursed. This has no bearing on a bad meal. Owner not available and waitress didn’t know email address to complain. She suggested I look on website! Not first class customer service as stated on website neither was it 5* hygiene . Altogether appealing visit and unhelpful staff. My family will never visit again

Visited Portals twice since lockdown was lifted. Both times it’s been beautiful. Very courteous staff and efficient service, even when really busy, especially the dark haired waitress in Abby’s Bar area. Booked for a third visit.

We have been for Sunday lunch the last three weeks and last night went for Eat Out to Help Out, each time the food has been outstanding. Nice and hot and freshly prepared. I always have the lamb on Sundays and hubby has the trio of meats, both come with a generous portion of fresh veg, delicious.Last night was really busy, but staff remained polite, professional and friendly in what are quite challenging times, we didn’t wait too long for food and again it was fresh and hot, mussels to start followed by a chicken pasta, hubby had garlic mushrooms and chargrilled chicken breast. Thanks again to Portals bringing a sense of normality to these challenging times.

Had a lovely meal here post lockdown. The food was amazing (have been a few times since it changed from Krimos and I’ve always thought it was a bit overrated) they have definitely upped their game with the food however (and i know the world is very difficult for everyone right now) the staff appeared miserable, the atmosphere felt awkward and i unfortunately will not be rushing to return due to this. The meal was nearly £100 for two of us and if im paying that for a nice meal then the atmosphere needs to match the lovely food.

Booked here for an evening meal for 3 adults whilst visiting Hartlepool. We were not disappointed. The food was superb and great service in very relaxed surroundings during these covid times. Definitely would visit here again.

Our 1st visit since the restaurant reopened and made a repeat booking before we left. As high a standard as every. Food and staff excellent.

Couldn't wait for Portals to re-open we went for Sunday lunch with friends. Once again we certainly were not disappointed the lunch was delicous to say the least. We were feeling a little anxious with not being out for a long time but we were soon made to feel very comfortable. Tony and hislovely staff welcomed us with open arms they had all the necessary social distancing, PPE for staff and sanitisers which were all in place making us feel very safe. Well done guys and thank you for our first successful lunch out in these very strange times.

As usual, this place doesn't disappoint. Top food and even better service. The two course set menu is fantastic value. If you havn't been yet, you're missing out.

We used to come here when it was Krimo’s, and although the decor seems a little less impressive now, the food is still just as good!The mussels tasted great, and the sea bass with curry was excellent!Unfortunately while the waiter was attentive, the waitress on the bar was less so... And a little condescending for someone so scruffy herself.We don’t often travel as far as Hartlepool, but we’ll make the trip again soon for Portals Place

We were a group of 9 went when restaurant was quiet. Service was very good and food was good, nicely presented and hot.

Lovely service, nicely cooked food and friendly atmosphere. Two courses for £10.95 is excellent value. Ample portions and very tasty. We had crab and fish cakes and pate with dressed salad and onion chutney. For mains we had the slow cooked beef and portals parmo each with a side of chips or veg. Would highly recommend and will definitely visit again.

about 25 of us ate here in December for 70th birthday. Service was good and despite the large numbers food came out within reasonable time and was fresh and tasty. The parmo was particularly nice. Certainly would go back and try Sunday lunch

Chilled and chic, a great place to watch the boats bobbing up and down in the marina. There is a restaurant which looked to be popular - we’d already eaten so will return to sample next time :)

I've been going to Portals Place for a number of years now and no matter the occasion the food is always lovely. The braised steak is to die for particularly.There are views of the marina through the large picture windows, the decor is light and modern, and the staff always polite and efficient. All in all, a lovely place to dine.

Lovely evening spent with my sister and brother in law in Portals. The menu choice was very good, the food was tasty and of good quality. The service was friendly, efficient and atmosphere warm. Overall a good night. Thank you Portals we will book again.

This is restaurant we visit regularly. I have several food intollerances and never have any qualms about eating here. The food is made from scratch so my needs can be accommodated. Food is always excellent - I would recommend the crab and fish cakes, the goats cheese tart, the slow cooked beef - to name but a few. Staff are friendly, helpful, the restaurant has a relaxed comfortable feel.

First time at portals for a family Xmas meal and it didn’t disappoint well presented service was good would definitely recommend and will be back

We went to the restaurant for the first time today and took advantage of the dinner time special 2 course. Food was great quality, well presented and delicious, the service was great and friendly defo well worth a visit we will he returning

Me and my friends enjoyed an absolute beautiful meal, the staff were amazing, with one of the girls not well and also gluten free they helped meet her needs with no problems. I can’t wait to come back next time! Big recommend definitely will be bringing the family! Pay for the quality, I noticed the brilliant priced children’s meals too. Mmmm the sticky toffee pudding is a must! Wow!!

We had private birthday lunch for 17 . Service first class . Waitress excellent going between bar and waitressing . Food great . Nothing was too much trouble . Can definitely recommend . Thank you so much .

11 of us decended on Partals for our Christmas lunch yesterday, we had pre-ordered to save time and confusion and although some of the diners changed their minds the staff coped admirably.

Good food let down by very poor service! I feel that the lack of attention to detail by the wait staff means that Portals Place is only average. Dessert orders delivered by 2 members of staff who just walked away!!! Drinks orders not placed at the bar. Simply no one coordinating the service. Food on the other hand is good.

Don't be fooled by the reasonable price of the standard lunch. Excellent choice of menu - not just main course but also starters and afters. Quality food well presented by pleasant staff. Brightened up a cold day overlooking Hartlepool harbour where you can watch all the activity.

Called in post a cinema viewing. Our two friends had been before and recommended it to us.

After nights of disappointing meals at the local Brewers Fayre. we decided to see what was in the area. That's when we experienced the excellent food served at the Portals Place.

We are contractors working localy and have become disolutioned with the meals at the Brewers Fayre , But i am glad to say we have dropped on a little gem of a place . The staff are very friendly and efficient and the meals are all good quality . Having ate there several times and cnnot fault it in any way

Staff always very attentive, nothing is a problem, food cooked to order, with a good variety of dishes to suit every palate. And the lunchtime and teatime offers are fabulous value, keep up the good work!

Staying at the nearby Premier Inn we thought we would try here rather than the Brewers Fayre and were not disappointed. Only ten minutes walk away. Early Saturday evening when we got there, very busy as the special early evening menu is obviously very popular. Extensive menu with all food cooked fresh along with excellent service will definitely call again when in the area.

Enjoy eating here on a regular basis as a local resident.

Large party as it was a Birthday Celabration

Celebrated a birthday night out with 10 family and friends and can only say after nearly 5 years in business this restaurant is consistent in its service, food quality , ambience and perfection in its food presentation. Every starter, main course and for the 3 of us who could manage a dessert was served piping hot in a manner that could not be improved. I promised myself chicken and king prawn dish and was not disappointed. The sauce was amazing. Well done Tony and team. You should be very proud of your success. Special mention to waitress Elisha who continues to welcome all customers in a calm friendly manner.

Great food, crab starter followed by duck for me and chicken for my wife. All excellent with good service.

Very good value for money, fish cakes for starter had delicious batter but filling a bit tasteless, chicken in cream sauce for main was very tasty and wedges were homemade and very satisfying, staff friendly and a great view over the harbour, will definitely return.

Havn't been for a while, not sure why I left it so long! Another fantastic meal had by all on our table. They now have parmesan on the menu which I really enjoyed. They also had seperate menus for two of my friends who required gluten free and vegan. The manager and her staff were fantastic yet again. Always nice to see happy staff.

Came for a Birthday celebration. Staff were great attentive and friendly. We all had starters and mains and everyone thoroughly enjoyed everything. The ones who had the garlic mushrooms said they were the best the have ever had. The mussels were absolutely delicious the sauce was wonderful. The slow cooked beef was melt in the mouth delicious. Due to it being a birthday we had arranged to bring our own cake and the staff dealt with this request with no issued. Over all great place to eat,lots to choose from ,loverly atmosphere and great staff.

Took my boys and my Wife for a meal at Portals, which is our favourite water side restaurant. We had sa simply stunning meal the service was excellent, staff professional polite and friendly. Service quick attentive food simply awesome. Thanks Michelle and the team for making our night special.

Booked for a meal with friends. Food was tasty but a little overpriced. Service was slow despite the restaurant being only half full. The bar next door was great for a pre-meal drink but it was difficult to have a conversation as the music was quite loud.

Probably the best tasting food in Hartlepool but the worst service. We ordered wine and the bottle was put on the table and the waitress walked away. 20 minutes later when she came back we asked if she could open it. She rolled her eyes as she picked up the bottle and then said oh it has a cork. Duh

My wife took me out for my birthday here. Had surf and turf which was fantastic. Steak and prawns both beautifully cooked.

I wanted to treat two people to something special. They suggested this restaurant and it’s no wonder. It’s well laid out and not crowded. We arrived for dinner at 6pm and the place was packed within an hour. The staff (especially our waiter) were top class and the food was so tasty. I have two people with special birthdays this year and I now know where I want to take them for a special meal.

The food was excellent. In addition, I left my small wallet on the floor and they went to some trouble to track me down so that I could collect it later,

Friendly staff. Nice menu, supplemented by an evening specials deal. Lots of pizza, pasta, meat and fish to choose from. I really enjoyed the pork fillet wrapped in bacon in sage mustard sauce. Not cheap but decent value. Would return.

Never ever are we disappointed when having a meal At Portals. Once again it was delicous. Nothing is a problem for any of the staff they are all wonderful. I had the lamb and requested no fat it was so tender and the gravy as always so tasty. To finish off we took our drinks onto the terrace and sat outside in the sunshine it was fab.. Thanks Tony

First time visitors and we did not go home disappointed.

I booked Portals Place for the family on Mothering Sunday and it did not disappoint. There was a large table of us which included children which was all ready for our arrival. The restaurant was absolutely packed and had a really great atmosphere.

On the 23rd of March 2019 we had my dads 80th Birthday at Portals Place 23 family & friends went the food was excellent & service excellent also thank you for making my dad day special.

This place never fails, the standard of food and service here are fantastic. Such tasty food and the most friendly staff. Location is perfect right next to the lock gates where you get to watch the boats come in and out. Finished off our evening with the most amazing cocktails in their bar next door. No better place to dine along the marina in my eyes I honestly didn't feel like we needed to go anywhere else, why would you?

Nice surroundings and warm. Reasonable 2 course tea. The food was delicious. The service excellent. All nice and friendly. Can’t go wrong for the price and the food top notch. Worth a visit. Can’t wait to return.

Restaurant is clean and has comfortable seating, the waiting staff are really friendly and efficient, the first time i went i had lobster chicken, we booked again and I was so looking forward to the same meal again and the menu had changed to prawn chicken, I thought the price of over 17 pounds was extortionate for a small piece of Chicken and one prawn and you only get one side, if I could eat like a normal adult i would have been starving

Portals Place is the restaurant Hartlepool has been missing for some time. Great food, lovely atmosphere and the bar area next door means you don’t have to end your night early or find somewhere else to go afterwards. The food is always great, presented nicely and a big enough portion that you wonder if dessert is a good idea (you still want to try though)!

Another great event that was made so special by the expertise and wonderful service and hospitality of all the staff at Portals. Sunday lunch as always was so delicous never heard one complaint from any of the 60 guests at our friends christening. Portals is an excellent venue for such a family event that was made so memorable by Tony and his team...

Who would have thought the food would be so good in Hartlepool!

We had a lovely evening food was delicious .Wine lovely and reasonably priced .However the bill was wrong .the menu states with main you get 1 side .they charged us an extra 6 pounds and I queried it and they agreed we had been over charged and removed it.

Visited for the first time last week the food is very good and decent portions.The restaurant had a lovely ambiance staff were very pleasant and attentive a good selection of drinks too,all in all had a very nice meal and will definitely be back.

We arranged our staff Christmas party at Portals as the food is always first class. You always worry if a restaurant can handle big parties (there were roughly 40 of us) and we were not disappointed. Service was fantastic, the staff really are lovely and so helpful, and the food was as good as always.

Went here for the first time and it wont be the last had gorgeous food, my husband had soup and a pork lunch and i had garlic mushrooms and chicken pepe the sauce was fab

Enjoyed an excellent Xmas lunch with friends and was very impressed by the quality of the meal.The staff were marvellous ,so polite and even though it was a very busy time they were calm and attentive..

Hartlepool marina has a variety of bars and restaurants making it a wonderful day or night out but if you want friendly happy staff and a welcoming environment along with great food portals is the place to pick the food is always fresh and hot with a great menu to choose from at affordable prices
