We’ve been here a few times and always had really nice food and friendly service at great prices. All the food we’ve ordered has been really good, but the chips are absolutely lovely, I can’t remember ever having better.

Such a Lovely bloke, went out his way to knock us up some battered Mars bars that wasn’t even on the menu for my kids!

100% perfect fish, chips & mushy peas!! Pure white flaky cod in a light, crispy batter with a generous portion of quality chips and HOT mushy peas 😋 Having grown up in a small fishing village in the 1970’s, I’ve got 50 years of experience of what makes the perfect fish supper and these were among the best. I was visiting friends in Hitchin who recommended Polcaro’s to me and I’m glad they did. It was clearly evident that the owner of this family-run business takes great pride in his shop as it was immaculately clean as were the staff uniforms.

Attended yesterday, busy at 1830 hours. Hard to park, the customer service was friendly I had fish, chips, and curry sauce. It was ok well cooked the chips were nice. The fish was not bad, a bit pricy but I get it as nothing is chip. The service was fast. The kitchen area looked clean.

The fish was decent but the chips were hard and clearly had been sitting around for a while. The portions are so small - they only do a standard size fish which is a kids portion. Even their ‘large’ chips are tiny. Not worth it at all, there are better alternatives. Real shame there isn’t a standout chippy in the local area. The chip shop in Arlesey is a better option.

By far the best quality and most tasty fish and chips in Hitchin - though a little pricey, but you know what you’re getting and they’re always consistent! For me curry sauce and mushy peas is also very important and not many places south of the Midlands usually do a good job of these, but Polcaro’s is pretty decent with these - though portion sizes could be more generous.

Lived by the sea all my life, so I know what good fish and chips are. Great fish and chips and not greasy at all plus fast, friendly service. Fish wasn't the freshest and portion sizes are a bit small. There is a lack of fish and chip shops in the area, so it's good that this one does a half decent meal. Personally I would lose the cardboard trays and dish out more chips.

Simply the best fish and chips in the area. We would go out of our way to come here for our fish and chips. Add to that the staff and owner who are so welcoming and friendly. Never had a bad experience and really couldn't recommend them highly enough

Excellent fish and chips ,beautiful crispy flaky cod and non greasy chips. Lovely. It has the added bonus of a free car park directly behind the shop.

Friendlyish staff a smile and a greeting would be nice from the young staff, the fish (cod and rock ok) chips ok ,A tad over priced .A little tweek over all would give it a 5 star rating .

EDIT: Now accept NFC payments and we'll deserving of 4 stars. Want to give it 3.5 stars. I've been going here for around 28 years and not much has changed in that time! Fish and chips are good, chicken bites are surprisingly excellent. Like any chippy, the food is best when it's busy, so Friday night is a good option or when they open on a Saturday. They used to only accept cash and I said I'd up them a star for cash payments so that's what I've done as they now accept cash and NFC.

Never been let down by the quality of food at Polcaro's. Visited for the first time since C19 arrived on our doorstep, only two customers allowed inside during Lockdown 2.0 & a line waiting outside on a cold dark night. A good sign in my book. 😉

The chip shop was well prepared for the COVID pandemic 😷. The staff were polite, personable and really helpful. We had an extremely hot, freshly cooked supper. As a quick ‘off the cuff’ choice after we had dropped some gifts off at a friends close by, we feel like we have found a gem of a chippy. We will definitely be back!👍🏻

Polcaros have been in hitchin a long time and generally speaking produce good food however there's a bit of variation in quality and the last fish I got here was a bit too greasy. It was very well cooked despite this. Chips also were not as delicious as normal. I'd go back as normally the food is better so this is a one off I suspect

Have used Polcaro’s take away a number of times over the last 12 months when staying in Hitchin. Always excellent fish & chips. Tend to pre order and agree a 15 minute collection time to allow for fresh cooking of the fish - have tried cod, haddock and scampi and never been disappointed

Sorry but my visit was not good for the price. £9.00 for small cod small chips and a can of coke . I know i asked for small but the .Chip portion was tiny . Was told they were waiting on the chips but the ones i got were dry so not sure where the fresh cooked ones went . First time and unfortunatley the last visit .

Recently moved to Hitchin and this is a great find. I was driving past back to our old haunt in Letchworth but was always disappointed with their vegetarian offerings. Polcaro’s has lots of choice but I thought I’d try the vegetable burger. It came deep fried in batter and was honesty the best burger I have tasted. I was asked if I wanted lettuce, obviously I did as I need to have the healthy option! The chips were very tasty with a slight crunch. The large cod was very nice too, lovely batter. A five star hygiene rating and lovely friendly people so it’s a win win so we will definitely use more often. Highly recommended.

Cooked to order..... I have had both cod and haddock here. Fish was very fresh, boneless, and cooked to order. Lovely crispy chips too. No excess oil on the paper and not at all greasy tasting. We will be returning. Great value for money.

Haven’t had fish and chips for ages, popped in on the way home. Have to say, was THE BEST fish and chips I have had the pleasure of eating in years! The haddock was perfectly cooked, batter light and crispy accompanied with chips also just right. Last time I enjoyed such standards was the OLD Taylors in Baldock when it was still family run.... Would recommend! Silvio, the owner, has got it right I'd say!

The only time I use another chippy is if Polcaro's is closed. Easily the best fish and chips in Hitchin. Nice, crisp batter, with the fish tender and perfectly cooked. Chips are never kept waiting around and are always perfect chip shop chips, not soggy or bland. The fishcakes are always nice as well. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the place is spotless, with top-marked hygiene certs on the wall. I have been using Polcaro's for years, and have never hankered for another chippy.

Really good food & always freindly service

Great cod and chips, we've had 3 takeaways from there and the fish has always been crispy when we open the wrapping at home 10 minutes after purchase so no complaints.

Good honest fish and chips, but a special shout out for the smoked dutch sausages - unusual and delicious. Great curry sauce too.

We had fish and chips for 4 Friday and it was really good, the chips tasted great. The fish was lovely well cooked and not greasy. The staff and the owner are very friendly we had a little chat and some banter. We have been here 3 times and every time it's been great. Three stars at best. Their chips are of an inconsistent quality. I've had a couple of really nice portions but I've also had a couple that were of a very poor standard and should not have been sold. The staff are polite and friendly but I don't think I will bother going back since this happened more than once and there are frankly better offerings elsewhere in town.

I’ve been coming here for a while now and the quality keeps getting better and better. Standards never drop, pitch perfect hygiene, amazing staff and always having a laugh with the owner. It’s perfect for anyone, family, friends and even if you want a quick fish cake for yourself. 100% recommendation, must have.

Very friendly welcome, clean shop and waiting area but best of all - wonderful fish and chips. Generous portions of perfectly cooked chips and good sized tasty Haddock fillets in lovely crispy batter cooked fresh to order. It's the little things that matter, like putting a fat chip on top of the fish before wrapping it so the paper does not stick to the batter. Simple but effective. The shop is on a busy corner but don't do what I did and park on the pavement because there is ample parking behind the shop. I've eaten fish and chips all over this country (and abroad) and I rate Polcaro's as one of the best. Go on, try it, you'll be glad you did.

If this is the best fish and chip shop in Hitchin, the rest must be pretty poor. The standard of fish and chip shops in hitchin and Letchworth have dramatically deteriorated over the past few years, this is no exception, the portion, £2 for a small polystyrene tray, which didn't weigh much less than the portion of chips in it, half of which were no more than weightless crisps.. On a plus side, and worth the 1 star, were the happy and smiley girls who served me..

I remember when Cod was cheap as chips but now the tables have turned. Generally everywhere Cod fillets have decreased hugely but the price has rocketed. Gone are the thick juicy Cod steaks and now its not cod in batter but Batter with a thin piece of cod in it and that is what we got this week. A tiny thin bit of cod in masses of batter. the chips were very good tho, crispy and well cooked. Sadly its a sign of the times with cod portions getting smaller but the cost around £8 is just too expensive for chips and batter.
