Pointer Inn in Isle of Wight

Lovely meal but always is. Chicken pie had loads of meat and the pastry is to die for. Had a flat tyre on the way, told them we were going to be later than booked, no problem and even though fairly full of customers there we were still made welcome and chatted to. Lovely place, and lovely staff, and lovely food. Recommended.

From the moment we walked in we felt welcome, the staff were very friendly. Nicola was our server, she was amazing. The starters arrived quickly and this was the beginning of what can only be described as a journey, a journey that you didn’t want to end. The food was amazing, I had the black pepper squid and my partner had BBQ wings starter. Followed by the hunters chicken, fish and chips, finished off by a chocolate brownie and apple & pear crumble. A feast for the eyes and the mouth, if you haven’t been here then you’ve got to go. For my first meal on the Isle of Wight it will be one I will definitely remember, highly recommend.

A group of us went here this evening for a meal and I can honestly say, it was delicious, the staff couldn't help enough with food allergies and all the food was so nice! Would definitely recommend and will be back again soon.

Lovely cosy place, staff friendly and service good. I had a lamb roast , as you can see so much meat which is hard to find sat on a bed of buttery mash and 4 roast pots. Not alot of atmosphere but that was more the time of day we went .(4pm)

Food was excellent. Beer was excellent but the pub was quite cold especially for the elderly relatives with us.

Went to The Pointers with the famalam and were so plenty surprised when they could seat the family of 10 without issues All the food came out together and it was piping hot and of very good quality. I would thoroughly recommend going there for meal. Really good service, friendly and good quality food which was really well priced. Brilliant thank you for a great meal

We received a warm welcome when arriving and the pub has a cosy traditional feel which we love. We arrived at 12.30 and there was no delay in service. I would recommend booking as all the tables had received boards on with atleast 2 sittings. My son has a dairy allergy which can make eating out a pain or he has the same food everywhere. It was a nice to see dairy free/vegan options available. He had a jacket potato with beans and cheese. It was a good size potato which was oven baked, loaded with beans and cheese severed with side salad. My partner had the homemade steak and ale pie with mash and veg, he said it was the best he has had for a very long time. I had roast and couldnt decided between lamb or beef so had both (pork and vegan nut roast are also an option). It was severed with roast potatoes, parsnips, mash potato, veg (carrots, broccoli, red cabbage and mashed swede) stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. My son had a pudding, which is a treat for him (due to allergy) he had vegan chocolate and caramel fudge cake served with dairy free chocolate ice cream. He said it was really good. All the portion are of good size, we all left feeling very full. We highly recommend and will visit again soon.

Hubby and I are over to visit family and we visited this lovely pub. We wasn’t disappointed a lovely welcome, shown to our table and the menu was full of lovely homemade dishes and best of all they offer smaller dishes for your main meal so you can fit 3 courses in or good if you are not a big eater. Plenty of variety and catered for allergies as well. The specials board was full of wonderful dishes too choose from. Hubby had the pie and I had gluten free burger with chilli con carne both were amazing, hubby also went for the butterscotch pudding and loved it. The owners and staff are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Would highly recommend paying this lovely pub a visit and maybe book as was buzzing for a Thursday night. My partner and I have visited The Pointers Inn many many times with our dog Oscar. I would almost say its our local haunt even though we live in Ventnor. The Inn is a small cosy pub in a small village with very traditional food cooked and executed well and very fairly priced. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with the food at our last visit. I had the duo Sunday Roast which was Beef and Pork. The food was presented well but it didn't meet the standards of previous roasts which I have had. The Yorkshire pudding was massive yes but it was overcooked and a little tasteless. Only 2 roast potatoes, not roasted, 1 parsnip which I found deep in the mash potatoes. The meat was very disappointing, very thin slices and again a but tasteless. My partner had scampi and said it wasn't as good as before. The chips used to be triple cooked and served in a small silver basket but not this time. The chips were thin skin on and only 7 pieces of scampi. A little poor but we are comparing these meals to previous ones which have always been excellent.

Three of us, trying a new Pub midweek in the summer & Sunday lunch off season. Parking, plenty of elbow room, quick & friendly service by an experienced team. Had a pint, pork 2 small & 1 normal, will ask for more gravy next time 😁, 3 pudding & 2 coffee for £25 head. Will return as a very good experience, nice chat with the owner. Pudding is exceptional.

We arrived for our first family holiday on the island on Friday and did a quick Google search for places to eat. We arrived at the pointer inn and we immediately felt the warmth from the staff who were more than willing to accommodate us at short notice. I must say as a picky eater I had the most beautiful jacket potato not normally something u get to brag about: my partner has a lovely ploughman’s sandwich and my daughter had in her words the best mac and cheese ever which if u knew her u would know is high praise. In leaving we decided to book for Sunday dinner. We arrived today to enjoy a Sunday roast before heading home on Monday. My daughter was immediately upset that she couldn’t have roast turkey as it wasn’t an option. This didn’t stop the staff going the extra mile and creating her the perfect roast dinner nothing was too much to ask. What can I say this was by far one of the biggest and best roast dinners. My daughter asked if we can travel over weekly for her own tailor Made dinner she was over the moon with her dinner. The staff were phenomenal and catered for us all with a smile and little joke even with the miserable weather making us a little glum. With special that’s the lovely gentleman that arranged Freya’s special dinner (I didn’t manage to get his name) and Freddy for chatting with us and making us feel welcome. Freddy you were right the chocolate fudge cake was amazing….. this will definitely be our first stop the next time we head over to the island 😊

When I last reviewed The Pointer Inn I was disappointed with the experience and recorded that I would call in again in a few months to see if anything had changed, after alerting the publican to my misgivings. Today was the promised revisit and I am delighted to say that I could not fault the service, cleanliness, beer condition or food on this occasion. I must add here that I did not eat a meal myself, relying upon the comments of others and my own view of the food being served at each table. What brought about this change? Well... I was pleasantly surprised to see a new face at the bar and discovered that the management was now in the capable hands of Mark and Luci, the new management pairing. The return of a former chef of The Pointer was also noticeable, with a visible difference to the food presented to each table. A special mention for Beth, who was a delight to chat to between customers.

6 adults 1 child, no complaints with the food, it was very good. Had mains and pudding, all very tasty and well presented. Would go again.

Having had a dreadfull family meal the day before when half the food went back, and the manager was not interested, it was refreshing to have such an excellent meal. Hot plates, great service, wonderful main courses and the puddings were even better. We were a large party, booked at only 10 minutes notice and when we arrived the staff were busy reorganising the dining area with a large dining table and high chair. Could not ask for better service.

Roast dinner stacked up in a big pile to look fancy the food in the middle went mushy the cauliflower and broccoli was nearly raw Yorkshire pudding was massive but hard to eat over cooked had to wait nearly half an hour after we finished the main meal before we were asked if we wanted desserts and then the dessert was nearly cold all this for over £100 for 4 people will not be returning

Been going to the pointer for twenty years plus . Very disappointed will not be going back in a hurry. Went for Sunday lunch booked a table . Waited for ages for a menu to be given had to go to the bar. No one came over to take order for some time serve was terrible. Food was ok no one was interested in serving had to ask as staff walked past . New owners need to sort out the service

We went here for lunch on a Saturday and loved it. Very relaxed atmosphere with lovely food, good portion sizes and great service. Friendly staff who were happy to adjust a meal to suit customers and when booking the table gave us a half hour window to arrive in. We had a great family meal and I'd happily go again.

Well. Under new ownership. Previous owners were.....best left unsaid! Anyway, new couple in charge are trying really hard to make it work and they get 5* for welcome, menu variety with specials too, great service, absolutely home cooked fresh food very well presented. Food is delicious and this place is worth a visit. Massive car parking. Dog friendly. We're going again later this week. These guys deserve to win! Tony Perrin, West Sussex.

A newish menu and friendly service

Visited for an evening meal and again for a couple of pints. Food and drinks were great, with portion sizes just right. Nice character place with a good mix of locals and visitors.

I am sorry but a roast pork dinner should always come with CRACKLING !! Roast potatoes should come crispy with fluffy centre not served on the plate covered in gravy making them soggy and where did you get the idea to fill a giant Yorkshire pudding with greens salad and make that the star of your dish as supposed to the pork ?? I asked for apple sauce and got mint sauce which goes with lamb and horseradish which a compliments beef . And lastly the pork which should have been the star of the show was a slither of meat which I’m paying a premium price for . I was looking forward to the meal as been told it was very good place to eat . The staff were friendly and I did feed these comments back to them to them in person and paid the full price for meal . This is of course my own opinion and others may have had a lovely meal .

This Pub was recommended to us by our son and his wife they come to the isle of wight every year. Always book several restaurants up in advance and The pointers is one of them. You will never taste such wonderful Pub food(not just Pub food) I had the chicken leak and ham pie the best I've ever tasted. Staff were friendly. Loved our dog. Highly recommended

Sunday carvery, very nicely prepared, presented, and served by the very friendly and helpful staff..The new menu is also very well balanced, with good choice across the board,, Specials on the board are always a welcome addition, the Ribs last week were excellent,, also the biscoff cheese cake is a real treat.. COMPLIMENTS to the chef..

We wanted a traditional Sunday roast and were lucky to get the last table available. The meal was excellent, trio of meats with lots of veggies. It look a while to be served our drinks which seemed strange for a pub. Short staffed perhaps? We noticed the place was closed the day before and for two days after our visit.

We called in for a casual drink but when we went to sit down we noticed all the tables had reserved on them. If we had been told we could not sit down inside but had to go outside we would not have bothered. Another couple did offer us to sit with them but we already felt uncomfortable and we will not be recommending this place to anybody unless they prebook for food

Nice evening meal in a great local pub. Had the chicken, leek & ham pie and was one of the best pies I’ve had in a long time! Very generous portion & decent prices. One of our fav pubs to go to for food on the Island.

Booked a table for two for Sunday Lunch and have to say it’s the best pub Sunday lunch we have had in a long time. There was a choice of three meats and we chose beef though you could have all three if you wished too. The beef cut like butter and was served with roast potatoes, mash potato which was so delicious, roast carrot and parsnip, stuffing and gravy with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have seen and gravy. Sliced carrots, cauliflower and broccoli were served in a separate dish. I asked for some extra gravy and a jug of hot gravy was supplied readily. Plates were warm, which is a big thing for us as your food stays hot longer. Desert was sticky toffee pudding, homemade, served with a few berries and I chose to have cream. It was heavenly and melted in the mouth. I would recommend you try this desert. Staff were friendly and efficient and service was swift. We will definitely return, this could well become our favourite pub for Sunday lunch and other occasions. We have already booked a Christmas lunch booking for December for a large group we were so impressed.

Visited this pub today 9/9/23 on arrival all we could hear was the dilapidated fridges while trying to have a peaceful drink. The view was the best thing about this pub. Food was highly rated on trip advisor!! However we ordered the super food salad. When it came it was lovely however no pine nuts or cauliflower as stated. Staff were friendly but a bit dissatisfied with the food.

Decided to go to the local pub with the family for our family holiday and it was a fantastic experience, with great drinks and superb food. Out of all we had, I must comment on: The chicken burger with chips and salad was a great sized portion, and the salmon on the special menu was extremely tasty! Desserts were also beautifully present from, with the lemon compote and the sticky toffee pudding pictured. The menu is also pictured.

A great asset to the village! Mark and Luci, new managers are brilliant. Phasing in new ideas and menu items that are delicious while maintaining the values of a traditional country pub. Great to see you so busy and good luck on your new adventure!

Was advised to have the pork belly and was not disappointed. The best I've had 10 10....

We were seated outside in a covered area as no inside tables available. That was absolutely fine. Not really any atmosphere to mention. Food was good, as we found at most places on the IOW, was more expensive than we would expect to pay in Hampshie.

Booked for early evening dinner. Although very busy we were made to feel welcome and couldn't fault service. We had 5 different main meals which were all well cooked. My wife had the special board salmon in Tuscan sauce which excellent. My steak and ale pie was really tasty. Daughters gammon steak came with all the trimmings. Will have that next time we go. Table service throughout was friendly and attentive.

Had previously visited in 2010 and was hoping the same service / good food was available. Was not disappointed, food is cooked to order, although thw wait was not long. I had the pork belly, and wife had the steak and ale pie.Finished with an apple crumble, although the min meal was very filing and could have foregone the dessert, Friendly and attentive service. Will not take such a long time in coming the next time on the island.

We booked the previous night and knew there was only tables available outside in the marquee as there were no tables available inside which was fine, we did ask on arrival if things had changed and there were seating inside but was told there were no tables,we ordered our food and drinks and was asked for payment straight away, no tab offered just in case we wanted to order a dessert or drinks after our meal, we were sat outside undercover in the dark until our food came out, barman then turned lights on, my husband had steak pie & I had chicken pie, my pie was fine not so pleased with the instant mash, the meat in my husbands pie was very compressed and tasted of gravy granules, nobody came back out to us for at least 30 minutes, we thought they had forgot about us, with nobody coming out to us we went into the pub, we wasn’t asked if we wanted deserts. Really disappointed with our visit.

Friendly stuff, great food, would definitely recommend!

Visited for evening meal, most tables had a reserved booking on but they managed to put us on a table that was reserved for 8pm (we arrived early at 6pm thankfully, so try and book first!). Lovely staff that were welcoming and always attentive. Fish and chips was great, nice batter and good chips. Pie was also tasty and nice classic selection of veg with the option of chips/mash/roasties which is a good detail. Chocolate cake for dessert was also very good, overall very happy and would return. Overheard it has been under new ownership since June this year and we couldn't tell, seemed to be running like a smooth operation that had been doing it for years, best of luck to the new owners.

Love this pub it had changed hands recently but the staff were very friendly and efficient my husband had the gammon which he enjoyed presentation excellent, I had the steak and ale pie everything was hot the only thing I would prefer my gravy served separately in a jug far to much for me my beef was dry in parts but I had had the same meal the week before was spot on you do need to book we wish them every success.

New owners have taken over by August 2023 and the quality of the food has plummeted! It's now very ordinary pub grub, but still a nice location with good beer.

This pub is under new management and I can only believe it’s reputation is based on the previous tenants. We ordered salt & pepper squid (ok) & fried halloumi as starters. The Halloumi was in thick breadcrumbs ( probably bought in frozen) & tasteless. My husband had a good sirloin but my ‘special’ belly of pork had been ruined and was dreadfully overcooked and dry. Having pointed out both these issues our bill came to over £81- with no discount or compensation offered. Our waitress was lovely and the service good, but the food pretty awful and pricey

Food is delicious! Make sure you book in advance. Service has a little room for improvement but when the food is that good you don't mind waiting for your plates to be cleared away.

We visited this pub on the last evening of our holiday and we are so glad we did as it ended our holiday on a real high.. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. We all had the Sunday roast which was superb. Just wish we had discovered this amazing pub sooner. If visiting this pub you will not be disappointed by the service or food. Well worth a visit. .

This pub is a credit to the owners and staff. It is extremely well managed. It is not overbooked which allows the chef to produce food of the finest quality every time. We are tourists and so it may be some time before we can return but I would highly recommend a visit for others. Our compliments go to the chef owners and staff. I would advise advanced booking.

Wow,,, how to start, we walked in pretty much fully booked and the lovely barman squeezed us tbl of 4 in, lovely staff Omg compliments to the chef I had rump steak rare cooked to perfection not a shy chef to actually cook a rare steak for once and o myyy the mushroom sauce was devine the steak was £20 ekkk but for what you got I'd pay 2 times over that, honestly in my 32yrs of living one of my top 3 steaks on the island thank you so much Only slight downful very minor if I'm being picky wasn't presented with steak knife on arrival or before my dinner came out but nothing major only nit picking Overall 5stars from me and my family will definitely be coming again x

We had completed a circular walk with aim of lunch and a few drinks. Upon arrival at the pub there was someone at bar so we patiently waited. Not once did the bar man make eye contact or say anything. 2 further members of staff...

Our best place to go for dinner on the island.

We were really looking forward to a nice meal out after being on the Isle of White for over a week in our motorhome. We rang and booked and were told the only table available was on the "veranda". We said that's fine it sounded nice sat outside. When we arrived we were sent out the back to an outside undercover seating area/smoking shelter not attached to the pub building and would have been sat completly on our own there to eat. We decided if we were to eat alone we might as well go back to our motorhome to eat there.

Under new ownership, the pointers Inn is still a very nice Sunday roast, however that is all that is available on a Sunday now. The Pointers Inn has been our first choice for dining out on the island for many years, however after today the Sunday roast seemed a smaller portion, with only 2 vegetables and no crackling, still very nice, but not quite as good as the previous staff and owners at present, but it is still early days, it seems unfair to compare to before, but service, choice and portion size has slipped slightly, Still VERY GOOD, but not quite what it was.

Staff were pleasant and polite. Coped very well with our large party of 16. Food was very tasty and nice and hot. Altogether a good evening and we will return when next in area.

We were visiting the Island as my aunt and her partner recently moved to the Island and were getting married. My aunt and her partner have previously eaten with yourselves and were impressed, so booked a table when we were visting. We were very dissapointed we were told that only certain items were available on the menu and even though it was fairly quick service, my mums fish and chips were over cooked so much that the fish had shrunk inside the batter and ended up with alot of batter and hardly any fish.

Large beer garden and good selection of real ales

Went for lunch recently and have to say it was perfect in every way. The new owners, Mark and Luci are very experienced and offer excellent service and great food. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family. I have to say, we are foodies and hard to please, but this place ticked all the boxes. Well done guys!
