Plaice to Be in East Ayrshire

Made the trip down to killie on recommendation, sadly this was no where near the standard expected. To me the chips seemed under cooked. The salt and vinegar was rationed and the fish was full of batter and a lot of Bone and pretty tasteless.

Best chippy in Scotland! Everything is just perfect and it is easy to see why Jo and her team have gained so much popularity - Go and enjoy!

Very poor service, they are very specific about collection times but they mean nothing- I was told 6.10pm and she eventually brought it to the window at 6.25pm I get they are busy but be realistic Last time I phoned I was put on hold for 5minutes and when I eventually hung up and called back the staff member didn’t believe me. Plenty of other chippys in the area

Smallest sausage supper I have had in years. 2 small sausages and a small handful of chips. Have an absolute cheek to call this a supper. Tried this chip cos I was passing. Won’t be back.

Visited for the first time today after seeing recommendations on social media. Staff lovely and good service. Fish supper and a single fish, greasy and all batter no fish, we both found bones in fish, chips not that great and asked for salt and vinegar but couldn't taste it. When you apply not enough salt and vinegar and one bit of fish is under the other then it's going to get none but still get all the grease from the one above. We'll no be back, Wee Hurrie is a million times better

Went this evening for breaded fish supper. Was surprised as to how quickly this was ready. It was barely cooked! Texture was awful and breaded coating was not nice. Chips were ok but no more than that. I had asked for plenty of salt and vinegar. If they put vinegar on it it must have been a new flavourless variety. I ended up throwing most of it away. Never to return

Telephoned an order to collect, when I got back to the house and opened it up the King Rib was burned the chips were more like Crisps and the Grease was dripping of the King Rib, the Sausage’s Had very little Batter on them and again the chips were more like Crisps, absolutely disgusting, I collected my order at 7.30pm and they close at 8 O’clock maybe the staff just uses the left over chips ? I have previously been to the Plaice to be and the food was totally different, and if I may add the staff was more friendly on the previous occasion also

Popped in again for fish & chips & fritters. Food was DELICIOUS. Best fish and chips in Kilmarnock. Staff are nice & friendly. Covid measures in place. Only 2 in shop at one time with masks. Orders can be phoned in & picked up.

Excellent service. Very well organised for social distancing etc in these challenging times and fish was superb.

Had a battered fish and a dressed fish supper last night as we were told this is one of the best chippy',s around. We travelled from South Ayrshire to give them a try and we were not disappointed with the fish but someone needs to tell them how to make chips. They were quite hard and gritty as if the oil/,fat needed changing, Sorry but passed a lot of better chippy's on the road up.

100% the best chip shop in Scotland wouldn’t go anywhere else the foods always spot on fresh and the staff are very friendly they can’t do enough for you.

As former regular buyers at "Another Plaice to Be", a rival and more local fish shop which shut down,we have had to look around for alternatives and "A Plaice to Be" seemed to fit the bill. I would agree with all those who have stated that the shop is spotless, you are served fairly quickly and the overall product is good. HOWEVER! if you look at the shops own publicity photo and consider the size of the portion of chips included I can confirm this is typical. Tonight's fish supper had a ridiculously small portion of, yes the fish was acceptable, yes the mushy peas were okay BUT this was meant to be a meal not a snack. Sorry! wont be back, Gemma likes her chips and frankly 19 is not an acceptable portion for anyone. Why skimp on the cheapest ingredient, pathetic!!!!!!

Due to all the comments I have heard about this Chip Shop, I decided to drive across town, to try it out. Everyone seems to be saying that it is the besy "Chippy" in Kilmarnock, but I must disagree, as I think that there are at least two better "Chippies" than this.The food was quite good, but I wouldn't say great.

Plaice to Be is spotlessly clean and you get a very generous sized portion.You are served quickly and efficiently and the staff are always friendly.I would highly recommend this chippy to all.

So glad Ive found the plaice to be, excellent meal for all my family, fresh food, good size portions, excellent value for money, friendly staff, clean environment, highly recommended, I give the place 5*.

I have used this chip shop for 6 years now. I have noticed it going down hill. Chips soaking with grease, roll was off and curry lumpy. Not a great experience. I have noticed that it is under new staff. Such a shame to see George not running the shop anymore and it seems to be all young girls, who have no experience cooking by my last few orders. It’s a shame to be looking else where for my chippys.

Always a pleasure to go to the plaice to be. Friendly staff, clean and tidy. The new manager, Jo, didn't mind that I went with only a couple of minutes before they shut. Saskia served me with great dignity and the three of us had a very enjoyable chat. The prices are very reasonable and nothing is too much trouble for them.

I have eaten at tons of chip shops up and down the country, as I work away from home a lot. I wish I could take this chip shop with me, as I’ve never had better. I am always the same, 2 large boneless haddock suppers, for the wife and I, and and a single black pudding split in two, cause we are greedy fat @£@#’s. Someone on here said they were surprised by the awards they have won. I am surprised it hasn’t won more. Staff are brilliant, place is spotless, food is freshly made, what’s to fault. If you like fish, “well it is a fish and chip shop” get yourself the large haddock, you won’t be disappointed. I love it here, and have even travelled back from places like Stranraer, Girvan, Ayr etc, on Sunday drives, to come home to Killie for what is the best of the best. Get in and PLAICE your order, you will not be dissapointed.

Visited tonight and had a boneless haddock supper, excellent portion size for the price and the fish is so fresh its out of this world. Keep the good work up!

I'm at a loss as to how this place has been voted the best chippy in Ayrshire, it is not good! We had fish and chips and the chips had a chemical taste to them and the fish was just awful, so the full thing went in the bin. We have had a chippy from here previously and it wasn't great, but we thought we would give it a second chance, definitely shouldn't have bothered. There are plenty more chip shops I the town that are far superior. Don't waste your money!

Lots of signs and publicity saying how wonderful this fish and chip shop is unfortunately doesn’t mean it is.

First things first... it’s a decent chippy. The food is usually good and always cooked fresh, the portions aren’t great value for money but do the job. I’ve used this chippy for literally the last 15 years.

Award winning chip shop you have got to be kidding. Worst fish supper I have tasted for a long time. Even had a cheek to charge £7.70 for a fish supper because I wanted a fish without bones, who would want one with bones! Pathetic size of fish and piddly amount of chips and to top it off they even tried to charge me for an extra supper I hadn't ordered. Avoid this Plaice!!!

Fantastic freshly cooked food. Lots to choose from. Lovely clean, tidy and well organized. Pleasant helpful staff. Will definitely return.

Try the Plaice to be and you will not be disappointed. All food freshly done as you wait but it it so worth the wait. Fabulous fish supper every time

I love the boneless haddock here, never had a bad meal. If I could afford to feed the family here all week I would, fresh hot food cooked to order....Love it

Have used this fish and chip shop a good few times and would rate it best in kilmarnock. Whether battered or special fish always tastes nice and fresh. Plenty of polite efficient staff so not long to wait. Only one small complaint,the last couple of times we were there (last time Saturday 19th Aug.) the portion of chips seemed to have a lot of "crumbles". Just so happened my son came home same night with chips from a different chip shop (not as good) but lovely big chips and no crispy end pieces. Possibly using different named potatoes?

I went to the place to be with my family and we all got differnt foods and the things that we got were great the stff are also nice and the staff are are very helpful you get served straght away the food is all frshly mde made the only thing they could do better is

Visited for the first time today, and have to say it was a good experience. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff were all very pleasant and the fish suppers were very good. Will be back.

We went into get our takeaway we were served right away the food was freshly cooked and it was not greasy like other chip shops

Best chippy in Kilmarnock in my opinion, everything's freshly cooked in front of you would highly recommend it to anyone

got 1 x large boneless haddock and chips and 2 x small fish and chips just under £18.00 not to cheap the chips were very poor all we tiny end bits in them my wife said the same, her fish and chips were small. but my large haddock was lovely wished the chips were better as will probably not travel 15 miles for that. as I go to a café in siloth in cumbrae and get fish and chips every night when at the caravan site as they are magnificent and cheap.as I don't eat fish much as I don't like all the bones due to chip shops not paying the prices to get them gutted properly.

Always excellent fish and chips. Staff always friendly. Best around for miles. Tucked away but well worth a visit if in the area.

Great Fresh Quality Fish & Chips. Tried various Fish & Chips within Ayr, Girvan, Kilmarnock and this is the best within Ayrshire.Fresh & Hot every time, Quick service and always busy would highly recommend. Can't believe only live 2 minutes from it and have only visited the takeaway in the last couple of weeks.Quick Service and reasonable prices compared to other takeaways.Overall I would rate the Quality of Food 9/10.

The fish is amazing and fresh. The haddock it grate and they tell you where the fish was caught which is good. Can't fault this place and near home too.

Got a carry out from here and these were quite possibly the best chips I have had in a while.Nice and fresh, tasty and not greasy in the least.Would defo visit again.

Went to the plaice to be tonight with my wife. The chip shop was empty and we were met by a girl standing at the till who took our order (no name badge), she was the taller of the two girls working there and wasnt as pretty as the other girl,maybe this was her problem,I don't know,but crabbit is an understatement. After taking our order and slamming our juice bottles on the counter,she then stormed away to go get the card machine (not an inconvenience in the modern world we live in I wouldn't have thought...). On her return she muttered it was a 20p charge to use the machine and handed me it over. I politely asked her how much it cost and you would've thought I swore at her the look she drew me. Transaction paid she disappeared through the back while the manager(?) fried the food. While he was waiting I noticed him washing his hands and cleaning surfaces before getting our order,always good to see hygiene rules being followed even if customer service isn't. Little miss rude returned and threw together our order with her bare,unwashed hands and handed it over without as much as a "Thank you," or "have a nice night," you know,basic manners and customer service. We left utterly appalled at her attitude. And as for the food itself,it was good,but I've had better,maybe there was a bitter taste in my mouth from the last encounter. However,I won't be back to give it another try. One last thing and I'm being really picky here,but if you're going to advertise buttered rolls on your menu, I'd expect them not to look like the picture attached. The Plaice to be is, somewhere else...

Fish and chips made fresh when you order them it is always very busy but it is worth the wait and you get a very good size portion .

Fish & Chips, made fresh with a lot of attention to detail , the special fish supper are exellent , and the boneless haddock is also exellent , with a very large portion

It's well tucked out of the way,it looks nothing special, but the food is fantastic. This is what all chip shops should be. This is not haute cuisine, but this is the real deal. I have been going here for years, I have to drive to get there, I plan my day around my fish supper and this place is amongst the best. I have never thought about writing a review for a 'chippy' but it's one of my favorite things and this is my favourite 'plaice'. I'm lucky I live here, but if you can give it a go, you will not be disappointed, enjoy.

Only discovered this chippy in the past couple of years and haven't found better since. Freshly cooked and very generous portions at reasonable prices.

My Wife and I fancied a chippy for dinner as there was nothing in the house to make for dinner. I went to the Plaice To Be (we always go there). I got her a Chip roll and a Fritter roll and got myself a Fish Supper. This is the first time I have got a fish supper from this place (I usually get a Haggis Supper) and I've got to say that the fish was fantastic! It tasted lovely and just broke apart and melted in my mouth, I got two large pieces of fish and a good portion of chips. The batter was nice and thin and crispy. I went at 1830 (22/03/2014) and it had quieted down, up until 1800 it is normally incredibly busy. It cost £7.90. This Fish Supper is only second best to the one I got at The Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum, fantastic chip shop food and quick friendly efficient staff.
