Pizza Express in York

Me and my little girl had a great dinner sharing starters and mains and dessert, great service, food was delicious and it was a good price. Thank you 😇

Update: Unfortunately our visit today was our worst. Our server was very disengaged. One of the childrens chicken pizzas arrived with no chicken on, not the end of the world. We were happy to just have a few bits of chicken brought out to pop on rather than have a new one made. Daughter started to eat a piece of chicken and said it was disgusting, it was freezing cold. Ordered dessert and after a very long wait and having to ask where it was we were told that they hadn't realised the desert chef had walked out. Bank holiday weekend and a busy Saturday tea time, I appreciate they are busy and probably tired. But the total lack of interest or care for paying customers was disappointing. I really hope it was just an off day as we enjoy coming here.

Our thin Italien pizza was delicious, crispy and well seasoned, bit over priced but not unusual in York. The interior of this beautiful building is stylish. Service was very friendly but we waited a long time when we wanted to pay even we said it twice the waiter was chatting with other guests and ignored us and the place wasn't busy at the time.

Impressive Victorian surroundings in the former Yorkshire Gentlemen's Club, great food and friendly, helpful staff.

Firstly, it was a Friday night so I expected the restaurant to be busy. There was a live band playing when we went. Unfortunately, I went with my family and it was quite loud, making it difficult to have a conversation. This is not the restaurant's fault as it was popular entertainment. Just be aware before you book if you want a quieter evening.

Beautiful decoration, excellent service… I loved the music and the pizza! A salon with art and beauty! It's worth a visit

Midweek late dinner after a long train journey. Just the ticket.

Had mostly starters as I wasn’t quite in the mood for pizza. The calamari, wings and pesto dough balls were a delight, however the garlic mushrooms were less garlicky and more balsamic vinegary. The service was okay - it was a Monday evening, so pretty slow but it took a good 5-10min at the entrance with nobody to be seen waiting to be seated. My partner had the sloppy guiseppe, and it seemed very fresh and usual fare for Pizza Express. The highlight is always the Billionaire’s Sundae. They give a mix of caramel and vanilla ice cream with biscuit crumble and chocolate syrup. We shared one this time around but usually, we can easily polish off one each. Highly recommend this for dessert!

Went there last night. Arrived very early for our reservation but was assured by the smiling manager it was no problem. We were seated and very quickly our order was taken by a lovely waitress Ade’. The pizzas arrived very quickly and were hot. Dessert was warm brownie and gelato. I had travelled up from Liverpool to see my daughter and it was lovely to sit and chat. The staff were attentive but not intrusive. They allowed us to sit and chat over coffee, long after other places would have kicked us out. We had a really lovely evening together. Thanks

My daughters had a party at Pizza Express today the room that the party was held in was absolutely beautiful lovely and clean. They had the table set up ready as soon as we walked through the door. all the staff were so hard-working there was 35 young children in total at the party. The staff were so patient and kind to all the children. Chris the manger was very understanding and attentive. Hussain (german man) was so so lovely with all the children, they loved him. There was also another young chef unfortunately i didn't catch his name but he was very good with all the children. All the staff worked so so hard and my kids had the best party. Thank you so much.

Really don’t recommend this place first of all was blanked by staff multiple times when trying to get a table, when ordering food didn’t ask if we had any allergies, one of the pizzas was wrong, then when ordering puddings they brought the wrong puddings out so had to wait longer for them to make new ones not to mention how rude some members of staff were and how they dropped not placed things on the table and the way they spoke DEFINITELY DO NOT COME HERE!!!!

The only knock on this place is it’s a chain. Putting that aside, the surroundings are unique and attractive; the service was friendly; and the food was good for what it was.

We arrived for lunch on 16.2.24 with my guide dog on arrival we were told they don't allow dogs even guide dogs and were asked to leave. Eventually a manager was found and we were granted access but we shouldn't have to fight to be allowed into a premises with my assistance dog that I need to be able to get around. Very upsetting experience.

Standard pizza express venue. Food was fine. Service from a female waitress was good. Toilets were dirty. In fact the train station toilets were cleaner. One male waiter looked like he had had his clothes on all week. They were filthy. Shirt untucked and food stains all over his top and pants. Quite off putting for eating food.

Unreliable service. If you can not do the delivery you should reject the order quickly. Ordered via deliveroo. Pizza express cancelled the order 5 mins before order was due to be delivered. Had been waiting for around 40 minutes. No explanation = poor customer experience. Plenty of other places for a pizza in York, so will make sure to order elsewhere in future.

We went in for takeaway. It's Valentine's Day and half term, so seemed better to not try and get a table. The woman behind the desk was lovely and gave us kid's menus for the children to colour in while we waited. Then a man came to replace her on the desk. We asked if we could order and he said takeaway would be a REALLY long wait. I said we'd go then, and he said we could stay, but takeaway would be a long wait. After a quick deliberation he came back and we asked for a table. He asked if we had a booking. Ummm... No. We came in for takeaway. He looked at us like we'd asked him to cook a pizza while flying us to the moon. "Madam, I have 300 bookings tonight." I said I thought he'd just said we could stay. Apparently I was under the misapprehension that when he said we could stay it meant we could stay. In short, don't come here for takeaway unless you're happy leaving again feeling disgruntled, frustrated, and hungry. No idea how the food is. One star for incredibly poor communication and service.

Very decent visit to celebrate a birthday to include a long term friend. Unobtrusive non persistent professional service from Attila. An enjoyed trip.

The food was very nice and Marta was lovely, very cheerful and efficient. However, we were not particularly impressed by the person which showed us to the table (I’m afraid I didn’t catch his name, but he was wearing a striped Tshirt). Very curt, we didn’t feel welcome at all. I would suggest choosing front staff with better social skills.

Beautiful setting and amazing pizza. Staff were friendly but clearly too busy. We didn't get a drinks order in so gave up in the end, drank water and went elsewhere afterwards.

Booked a table today for a family meal (three adults and 5 children) prior to heading to the Pantomime. Amazing service as soon as we walked in. Great food and good value for money. Nothing was too much trouble for our waiter, Liam. Including making my nieces birthday special with a candle and a song with her dessert. Thank you, we will be back.

Five of our party of seven were nearly an hour late as the centre of York was gridlocked. However, Pizza Express kept our table open for us. Even though they were really busy as it was the lead up to Christmas. The food was good and the guy who served us very pleasant, informative and very efficient. The only reason it didn't get 5* for atmosphere is because we were in the entrance room with only a few tables and not on the main room. Apart from the atmosphere, it wasn't really an issue being in this room.

Brilliant Pizza Express! Standard fare from their menu but the restaurant is in an old Gentleman’s Club and they’ve tastefully retained the grand decor.

On a day trip to York to attend an organ recital at the Minster and as my family and I were tired of walking and absolutely starving, we popped in here. I enjoyed a delicious spicy meat feast pizza and glass of red wine. Good value - I was expecting much higher prices due to being in major tourist area.

I’m only giving one star so I can actually leave a review. Terrible quality and over priced cold food complete with an obnoxious waiter who was full of himself. The only reason he didn’t get a bust lip was thanks to my wife. Absolutely avoid and eat somewhere more upmarket.

Pizza express is what it is - a chain pizzeria but this one stands out for its lovely setting and professional friendly service. Have eaten here 1/2 dozen times and have always had a good experience. Last night we had a calzone and a pizza and both were hot and well cooked. Prices aren’t that cheap though - these were about £ 18 each so above / on a par with what pay for a stone baked artisan pizza - but we usually use Tesco vouchers so food is free.

The view was amazing right next to the river, we hadn't booked in advance but still was seated instantly. Food was all brought out fresh and hot and the server was very friendly and knew what he was doing

Came for a meal with my Daughter and we had amazing food starters came fast and hot and the pizza's were amazing.Had amazing service from Ireneusz.i really recomend it!

It’s a nice place for a predictable food which is actually nice but not authentic. I like going for a good meal knowing what to expect and continue working while having lunch

Really great ambiance. Good responsive service. And the staff, just cool and extremely courteous. The thin crust was really what we expected. Asked for chilli flakes and it was burning hot: just as we wanted!!!

Decent pizza in a lovely old building by the riverside. A little on the expensive side if paying full price, although very good value if you're able to take advantage of the 3 to 1 Tesco clubcard voucher offer.

Over busy, waited well over an hour for food and it still arrived at different times. Pizza was fine but polenta chips were burnt on one side and the chicken Milanese was basically undercooked breaded reformed chicken with a tiny bit of rocket so definitely not a main meal.

We ate here in the early evening. The menu was the usual Pizza Express one, plenty of choice of food and drinks. However the building was different to the usual modern look, I understand it was previously a posh men’s club, the walls are panelled and the entrance floor has attractive old tiles. Service was good.

Lovely food but expensive. the kids menu is good value with 4 courses including dough balls (with side of Tom’s and cucumber), pizza, ice cream and a babycino. Maybe the price caters for the upkeep of this stunning building and the impressive antique urinals.make sure you drink plenty of water to get your money’s worth 😃

Booked a table for 5, was put on a table for 4, with a table for 2 added to the end making us so close to the next table it was not enjoyable! Also booked knowing there was live music!!! It was my birthday meal out and we were not even in the same room as the music and couldn’t hear what was going on just the clapping of the lucky few who has been seated in the other room. Over all whilst the food was as expected the night was very disappointing and did not live up to what we had hoped for a night of live music. WOULD NOT BOOK AGAIN, unless they confirmed which room our table was in. Such a shame!

Had a very nice evening with the family and grandkids. Service and food was excellent and reasonably priced. Bonus of two ladies playing guitars and singing.

Went Wednesday night. Had not booked. Two rooms very full, 6 couples behind us also waiting to get in. The very helpful waiters were on top of everything. No delay with food. Service fantastic. Thank you Huseyin for your very high standards. Food would have been 5* but batter on calamari ever so slightly undercooked. Service excellent. Well done Pizza Express. Decent food, but an amazing building with lovely Victorian features. Update Oct 2023: great service, extremely easy to get dairy free options for our son and the food is even better too. Recommended!

love eating in here staff are lovely but for the love of god please do not get takeaway. pizza toppings were thrown on with no care very lopsided and dough balls were really uneven sizes? felt like i got scammed lol. everything arrived cold.

With the Liverpool one restaurant leaving most unsavoury taste in my mouth from our last Pizza Express visit, It was refreshing to return to York Pizza express. We visited twice during our 2 night stay (we like pizza!) and the service, food and atmosphere where fantastic. It's been two years since we last cam here and I am pleased to say standards have not slipped, if anything they have got better! We ordered Bruschetta original and Romana base pizzas, (spicy Guissepe / Fungi de bosco) Great flavours, we presented, cooked to perfection. The service was also excellent. Faultless

We have been to this restaurant and others in the chain before but never had such a disappointing meal. I had a voucher for a Classic Pizza for £8-99 but on entering the premises, a big sign announced VIP price of £7-99. The VIP stood for Very Important Price. In tiny writing underneath it explained (if you put your glasses on and grovelled on the floor) that the VIP price was for VIP members and non VIP members would be charged £9-99. Inside the price of the pizza off the menu was £13-99. That's 4 different prices from the door to the table! The total bill for pizza, a chicken dish, some chips 2 large glasses of wine, 2 desserts and 2 espressos came to a staggering £74! With my voucher I got a fiver off. The restaurant was beautiful, the service was lovely with 3 super staff looking after us but as locals, we felt this meal was very ordinary for the price and our normal go to Italian would produce far better results for a much lower price. We gave it a go but until you can sort out your pricing, we won't be coming back or recommending you. Sorry!

If you are lucky enough to get Huseyin as your host and waiter, you are in for a wonderful experience. We took my almost 7 year old for a birthday pizza and had an amazing night. Huseyin looked after us all night, was attentive, funny and great company. Food was great, atmosphere too and half price pizza even better

The location is breathtaking, perfectly complimented by our server Kumar who went above and beyond which was the highlight of our visit.

We came for a dinner last week and had an awesome time the food was great and prompt and our service from Georgia was excellent, would definitely recommend!

Was ok was warm sat outside took about 15 mins to 20 for a member of staff to come out wasn’t busy food ok nothing special

Food was great and the service was ok enough for me to leave a tip. Unfortunately I left me prescription sun glasses on the table when we left. I realised about an hour later and called them. Was told flatly "no nothing has been found!". I rang back 2 hours later and still nothing had been found. I asked if there was CCTV and was told yes. I said I would go back the next day to see it but when I arrived the next day the staff were less than helpful or caring. Lost my custom as I firmly believe that a staff member has taken them. Can't imagine anyone else doing it as there were only 2 families in the room at the time. I would like to thank the GM for replying to this complaint, I took the time to email him and offered to discuss this further but unfortunatly he has not replied to my email in over 2 weeks now. This is about the level of service that I expected. :(

We adore going to Pizza Express, and anytime we visit a new city, we love to investigate where the nearest Pizza Express is purely because there is a standard that cannot be matched with the other pizza places I've been to. I don't know what it is, but each time I go to any Pizza Express, I'm always amazed by the kindness of the staff and how delicious everything is on the menu. I know I can try something new, and if Pizza Express has it on the menu it's for a good reason. We walked in after a busy day of exploring York and found it easy to get to through the directions of Google Maps. When entering in, we were greeted by a lovely waiter who took us through to the main dining area. This place was very charming, and I love buildings that have a lot of history in them as it feels a mix of history and dining; this particular pizza express looked like an old-fashioned mansion from once upon a time, and it was just wonderful to be able to see the little nooks and crannies of the place. I'm a gold member of Pizza Express, so I got to reap the benefits of free goodies; actually, at that time, I was a silver, not a gold, but it still provided me with free doughballs to start, which honestly, one portion is enough for two people if you have a main course too. I went for the lasagne, and how good this was was mindblowing. Bubbling away when it got served, I enjoyed this, and now it's a favourite of mine whenever I go to Pizza Express. I highly recommend it, and I could not fault this place.

Waited a long time to be served and it wasn’t that busy. Once we ordered, service was quick although a starter was missing (put right) but the staff were friendly, food was OK. Quite expensive for what it is. Wouldn’t rush back.

Lovely warm welcome and immediately shown to our table. Our drinks and food arrived quickly. Wine was good and well chilled. Food was delicious. Special mention to Rob who was friendly, efficient and went out of his way to make us feel welcome on a rainy Friday.

You can’t go wrong at this Pizza Express. We’ve visited several times recently and the service and food has always been excellent.

The restaurant is within a lovely building and was clean. Good range of options including a separate vegan menu. I had a vegan mushroom pizza which tasted nice enough but I felt there wasn’t a lot of toppings on my pizza and it was a bit cold when it arrived. My partner’s chicken pizza was a bit more generous with the toppings. Overall ok but could have been better.

What a lovely, friendly guy working in Pizza Express today. He dealt with allergens and dietary requirements in such a professional way. We checked his name on the receipt so we could credit him. Great job, Reece!

I attended the restaurant on 12/7/23 and was greeted by a very welcoming member of staff. The food was great and the customer from all of the staff was great. I also found that the manager Rob very helpful, polite and professional.

After booking ahead I then had to call up and tell them we would be late as we were stuck in traffic. They guy I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful, even though they were busy. The food was tasty and perfectly hot. The service was quick and friendly. It would have been like every other trip to a Pizza Express except for the lovely guy front of house who was animated, caring and helpful. Thank you for making a slightly stressful start to the holiday a little easier

It was really good to go back Pizza Express and enjoy the food and friendly staff. The setting is good, the social distancing was well managed and whilst we all understand the challenges of Covid - I cant but help think that the value for money is starting to be tested. We shared dough balls, then two American hot pizzas and 3 glasses of wine...the wine does seem to be getting pricey and we ended up paying £65 ..which is starting to get expensive.Still love PE, good staff and good food but the price is starting to make me think...

Only ended up here as had work and late in the evening and looking for food to eat. I should have walked out really as this restaurant had a really bad smell inside (urine smell) .Pizza was not hot enough Polenta fries we was recommended to get , but they were yuuckkk never liked this. and tasted one and left the rest. ( and they did not offer replacement or take this off the bill.) The desserts was the most ammature looking. Chocolate fondant and looked nothing like the pic online. Like the chocolate was hard frozen and thrown out of the pack.The smell entire time put me off.The staff do expect a tip!And pizza express is like soooo over priced

Visitamos Pizza Express en York un viernes por la noche en septiembre de 2020. Nos sorprendió conseguir una mesa de inmediato, 7 pm de la noche para 6 personas. Las restricciones de Covid significaban que no podíamos tener menús en papel, pero cuando les expliqué que solo teníamos un teléfono entre 6 de nosotros, acordaron darnos menús en papel, pero solo después de que hiciéramos el registro de seguimiento y rastreo, mantuvieron los menús en papel para rescatar hasta entonces! Realmente no veo cómo se conectaron los dos: ¿era menos probable que tuviera Covid y contaminara los menús porque había hecho el seguimiento y la localización? ? Le hubiera dado 5 estrellas si no fuera por esto.

Pasamos por pizzas en una tarde empapada a la hora del almuerzo. He visto un par de comentarios aquí sobre la falta de distanciamiento social. No encontramos esto en absoluto, todo lo contrario. Me gustaría agradecer al equipo por ser complaciente con nuestro grupo, mientras observa el distanciamiento social. Las pizzas eran geniales como de costumbre y se sirven rápidamente, ¡así que en general, fue una buena experiencia!

Hemos sido clientes habituales aquí desde que los niños eran pequeños.Las pizzas más o menos siempre han sido buenas, lo mismo con los entrantes, etc. .El problema es que siempre hemos tenido cupones, lo que lo hace asequible, pero sin los cupones te das cuenta de lo caro que es este lugar básicamente para pizza.Pizza: las que son lo suficientemente grandes para un adulto tienen poco menos de 15, puedes conseguir un bistec para eso o un plato de comida tailandesa para 8.Postre - mi hijo tenía la tarta de queso con crema, pequeña porción - 7! ! ! ! Fui a una cena rápida con mi madre, la comida en sí misma, el personal encantador que no se adhirió a las medidas de distanciamiento social, las mesas muy cerca una de la otra tenían un conteo rápido de personas y, aunque las habitaciones son grandes, había 35 personas sentadas en una habitación. Nos apresuramos a comer y nos fuimos sintiéndonos decepcionados, ¡nunca volveremos! Reservé previamente una mesa en el restaurante en línea, con una solicitud de una mesa más grande para permitir el distanciamiento entre dos hogares. Cuando recibí la confirmación de la reserva, supuse que se había confirmado.Llegué al restaurante un poco más tarde que mi familia, quienes ya estaban sentados y pidieron bebidas mientras esperaban mi llegada. Cuando me llevaron a la mesa, pude ver que había una mesa para cuatro personas, con una mesa adicional para dos personas al final. When we sat down we was told to download an app, which was a bit of a faf. We couldn’t find any prices online so asked a member of staff (female, dark brown hair) if there was an alternative menu, so we could actually see the prices. She didn’t seem happy that I’d asked, but gave me one anyway. After that she was rude throughout the meal, no manners, spoke abruptly and didn’t smile once. The food was nice but I wouldn’t come again due to the staffs attitude

Went to celebrate our son’s engagement and had a great evening. The staff were engaged and helpful in these difficult times.

After lock down we had all agreed that Pizza Express was one of the first places we would go back to. We have always enjoyed the busy but friendly service in there.... until now.After confused instructions on downloading an app to order food on the table a waiter appeared to take our order. On asking for their most popular pizza we were told they didn’t have the ingredients to make it. No suggestion to an alternative or smile or apology was offered. The service was equally poor on a neighbouring table when an elderly couple were told to photograph the QR code. To their bewilderment they produced a disposable camera. The waitress didn’t help just produced a paper copy and like us didn’t inform the customers that the menu wasn’t completely available and therefore confusion again when they were told the ingredients were not available to make the pizza of choice. Luckily the Government were paying towards the meal otherwise we would have very unhappy. My companions were great and the building is beautiful just a shame the staff that were working don’t seem to be enjoying been back at work.

Poor vegetarian selection but nice staff. Three of our party don’t eat meat. Also no Vodka? Obviously a Covid decision which we fully respect, hence 3 stars as opposed to two.

We were in York for a brief trip and wanted a quick meal. We asked if they were taking walkup diners and were politely informed that they were but would need the table back after an hour. This suited us so we sat down, and scanned the QR code to get the menu, slightly reduced but all the favourites were still there. We placed the order with the waitress and then food and drinks were delivered to the table on the tray so that we could then pick them up to move them for us to eat/drink. We had two very good courses and it was lovely to be back eating out. Bill payment was again via the website from the QR code. Lovely toilets.

Absolutely awful, went to celebrate my sons birthday and booked on line.From the second we got the the service was shocking.The who appeared to be the manager was very very confrontational when we asked if we could order some drinks.When challenged on this she became very argumentative, to the point where we didn’t even order our food.We left and went and ordered food elsewhere.We have never ever walked out of a restaurant before and as a family we use pizza express quite a lot.What a shame.We will never step food in Pizza express again.

We both had 3 courses and enjoyed each course. The Gluten free options are clearly labelled and theres a good selection they even had Gluten Free Peroni which was a bonus. The kids menu is great which has 3 courses or you can just pick a main dish and it has a family friendly vibe. We had a 25% of code which made the bill reasonable would have been a bit pricey without however there were set meal options available that were good value. The staff were pleasant and efficient. Having visited numerous Pizza Express Restaurant's over the years I feel they can be very hit or miss. This particular restaurant is definitely a hit. Will definitely revisit next time we are in York.

Very Good!We ordered dough balls for our starters and to say we had a party of seven people the food came very quickly. The food tasted great. The pizza tasted very nice and fresh and the service was good too. Nice, friendly staff and a reasonable price for seven people. Amazing deserts too!

Good food, staff attitude is very bad including the manager. table was a mess, they made people wait 44 min for a table because the dirty tables, we ordered and had to wait 45 mins for our pizza yet people that was there after us had there foor first, would not go again

This Pizza Express is housed in a lovely old building close to the river. The service was attentive and we were well looked after. I was pleasantly surprised after reading the previous reviews - almost went elsewhere. Food is pretty consistent which ever restaurant you visit. Rather pricey for pizza and salad but we had Tesco vouchers so bill was just for drinks. Wouldn't chose to eat at Pizza Express unless I had money off vouchers to use.

Visitamos por última vez en agosto de 2017 para almorzar, donde tuvimos un excelente servicio y comida. Después de una ausencia de poco más de dos años, pensamos que volveríamos a ir antes del cine. Fue un desastre . El único punto bueno es nuestro camarero. El vino sabía a agua, por lo que se abrió una nueva botella en la mesa, esta vez estuvo bien. La comida no era comestible, tuvimos el legere y spaghetti. Pagamos y nos fuimos. Antes de irnos, le indicamos todo esto a nuestro camarero que era muy comprensivo. No fue su culpa. Para un lugar que debe tener un gran horno de pizza, nos sorprendió que un miércoles a la hora del almuerzo, cuando el lugar no estaba exactamente ocupado, que nuestras pizzas tardaron veinticinco minutos en llegar. Food and service fine....toilets filthy...not just due to a busy service, thick grim and dust. Was told by manager no chemicals because a listed building. I suggest soap water and old fashioned elbow grease, there are loads of environmentally friendly products, that is no excuse. You need a thorough cleaning routine. Absolutely disgraceful pizza express. Toilets obviously not cleaned properly for months. Equally concerning staff seemed unconcerned.

I visited York with my daughters for a weekend. We turned up at pizza express Saturday evening without reservations 2 weeks before Christmas! It was busy, but we were impressed by the floor manager who was really working hard to seat everyone! We were given a realistic wait time, and supplied with menus while we waited. Pizza Express is reliable, good value for money food, we had a nice meal in a very nice setting. But the reason that I am giving 5 stars is the staff! They were rushed off their feet, but were still friendly and efficient. A thoroughly enjoyable experience!
