01/12/2019: Came here with friends. Ordered an Espresso Martini (£10.75), an Amaretto sour (£10.74), a Porn Star Martini (£14.75), a Cosmopolitan (£10.75), a Coke (£4) and a Negroni (£10.75). We were also charged £2 per person as a cover charge and 12.5% service charge. For a starter I had the seared scallops (£17.50) which I enjoyed. We also ordered the octopus (£13.75) and the Dorset crab (£18.25). I then ordered the fillet of cod (£24) which was okay. We also ordered the rib steak (£34.50) which was huge, the shrimp burger (£18.75) which I'm informed was average, and the chicken milanese (£17.75). We also ordered the creamed spinach (£5.25), some chips (£4.75) which were very underwhelming, broccoli (£4.75) and mashed potatoes (£4.75) which was very nice. I then had the summer pudding (£9.25) for dessert which was much too tart. We also ordered the raspberry macaron (£9.50), the cheesecake (£9.25) and the churros (£8.75). Although service was attentive, many of the dishes were pretty average and just did not wow.
31/12/2019: Very nice food but the overall experience was sadly lacking. We had a 4pm late afternoon booking on New Year's Eve. This was a wrong decision as it was towards the end of lunch service but before the early evening diners arrived. The table we were allocated, thoughtlessly, was situated in a section of the restaurant where most diners were leaving or had left, whereas the main section was still fairly bustling and there were tables available. For some reason, the bass of the sound system was booming away with no semblance of music, so I asked the waiter to see if he could sort it - it was resolved. I had to ask for the candle on the table to be lit which helped the atmosphere a little. The tables were being relaid and there was a massive crashing of cutlery that was unnecessary - we asked if it could be quietened a little. The waiters were generally very friendly and accommodating but the Maitre d' decided that as we had raised a few issues he wanted to put his oar in. Rather than being pleasant and placating us, he simply went on the defensive and that irritated us even further. We eventually ordered a nice bottle of 'Picpoul de Pinet' and then ordered the food. After a while, the wrong order of starters was brought to the table - confusion reigned. The correct food finally arrived which was very tasty. I opted for the Foie Gras with a warm rhubard tart - very nice. My wife went for the Duck and Pineapple salad starter and thought it very good whereas my daughter opted for the octopus which she thoroughly enjoyed. Two ordered the Prawn Burger and thought it very good, whereas I went for the Chicken Escalope that in fairness was really good. I accompanied this with mid cut chips and cauliflower cheese. it was very filling but tasty. All in all, the food was very good, not exceptional, but the ambiance and overall experience left a huge amount to be desired such that we wouldn't return, despite the fact that we have eaten at Le Caprice several times and have previously rated it. Clearly, the management knew that something was wrong and removed the service charge from the bill before giving it to me - at least this saved me the embarrassment of removing it, as the overall experience was less than satisfactory, despite the fact that the kitchen turned out good food!
