¡No encontrarás a Stella (o, peor aún, a Carlsberg!)

I used to love this place. It had a fantastic beer bible you wanted to work your way through, loads of wonderful guest beers, a great atmosphere and fabulous pies. However, sadly it is not what it used to be. A few months back they made a big thing of their new gin menu. They do still offer a choice of gins but now your gin is no longer served in a gin balloon. Instead youre more likely to get a chunky tumbler or, I kid you not, a beer glass. Now I'm no snob but if I'm paying £7 plus for my double gin I expect what you get in any decent bar.....a gin balloon.Add to this the fact that at the end of last year the oven was 'broken' for several months and their trademark pies were not available. Plus the guest beers and beer bibles have all but disappeared and it all adds up to a bar that doesn't really care about it customers. Yeah I accept glasses and ovens break but how hard is it to order some new gin balloons or get your oven fixed? The management appear to assume that customers will remain loyal no matter what and I've given this place the benefit of the doubt hoping that it would improve but unfortunately I've realised that it's resting on its laurels and doesn't really care about it customers so I'm taking my custom elsewhere in future.

Without a doubt this is still the best place to go to in south Liverpool if you like real ale, craft beer and foreign bottled beer. Other pubs in the area might have bog standard cask ales such as Wainwrights, Hobgoblin etc, or they might occasionally rotate their cask ale, but the quality isn't too good. It's only in Pi where you find ever changing real ales that are served in top condition from the likes of Tatton Brewery, Red Willow, Black Edge, Track, Liverpool Organic etc. There are also foreign lagers on tap and keg craft beers, including Pi PA which is specially brewed for Pi.And not forgetting the large range of bottled Belgian beers and bottled beers from other countries, plus canned craft beers from the like of Beavertown and Magic Rock. The staff are very friendly and the prices are very reasonable, plus there is free WiFi. Be aware that it can get very busy in the evening, especially on Friday and Saturday, so if you plan on staying for a while to have a pie and a few pints and you want a table then get there early.

Came here with a mate the other Saturday for what was the first visit in a long while and will probably be, I'm sad to say, the last.We were warmly greeted at the bar in the first instance by a tall gentleman with a beard the likes of which would make Brian Blessed wince with envy. He procured us a couple of pint of a good dark dark ale (I forget what its called). So far, so good.In terms of wares on offer, this place has a range of international bottled beers that remains unrivalled in the Allerton region and a nice selection of ales too. The pieminster pies are not really my bag but it's a good and simple food pairing to the ales. The eclectic decor and diffused lighting make for a cosy and rustic experience. A lot of care and thought has obviously been put into this making this place a pretty decent boozer and therefore I was utterly bewildered by the event which next unfurled...As we sat down with our drinks we noticed how cold it was. The few other fellow drinkers on the surrounding tables were all huddled up with their coats still on. The one radiator in the room was stone cold. A new fellow on the bar had now replaced the first - shortish, with dark hair tied up in what I believe is referred to as a "man-bun". I got up to mention this to him in what I though would be a simple and pleasant exchange. How wrong I was..."ITS ALREADY ON." .. he abruptly remarked. "Oh, are you sure? It's stone cold." I says."THAT'S AS HOT AS IT GETS. IT'S NOT MY JOB TO DEAL WITH RADIATORS ANYWAY."Just. Wow.I mentioned the same thing to a passing lad who was collecting glasses who agreed it was too cold and went into a room and sorted out the problem straight away.I doubt it will be possible for me to return here due to this utterly surreal incident. Unless you have a particular penchent for being spoken to like filth, I would not advise you to risk it either.

We didn't eat this night but my wife was there for lunch earlier in the week and could highly recommend the pie experience. It is only pies and mash and good beer so don't go expecting a side salad! Oh they do have nice wines too but the main draw is the beer. Would go back again.

I was spoken to like absolute dirt by the long haired character behind the bar (wont call him a barman as there is no way he can be classed as one). His back seem to be up from the word go. I asked him to recommend hoppy ale to which he bluntly replied “none”! I then asked him if I could have a sample of one of the ales on tap, his face dropped like I’d just told him I’d been sleeping with his wife.He reluctantly gave me a splash and I mean a splash of the ale to try. Barley any liquid in the sample glass just froth. At this stage I knew I was dealing with a ‘wrong un’ and I decided to see how far this character would go before completely imploding, so I asked for another sample of different ale.Long haired man was really mad now......I let it pass for a little while longer but when I quizzed him about how they could charge £5 per pint for an IPA which frankly taste like rat pee, I was told it’s not ‘CARLING’ and I could to leave. That was it, I’d now had enough of his appalling demeanour and attitude towards me, so I gave the scruff a real drilling down in front of other punters and had it not been for my partner coming over and the fact we’d arranged to meet other people in this dump, I’d have left and taken my business elsewhere. And it seems this character has a habit of being a plonker towards paying customers so much so that it made national news last year..... If the management are reading this how has this chap not been sacked, he giving your business a real bad rep. We’ve certainly told all our friends in L17 & 18 to avoid this hole.

Got the chance to try this place out on a sunday afternoon. Its quite simple if you like beers and pies your going to love this place if you dont like both of those things you might not have the best time. Great selection of beers including 4 or 5 Australian beers which made me feel at home being Australian. There was only 4 pies on the board but awesome flavours and different twists. I had a chicken, bacon, Thyme and leek pie. One of the best pies I have ever had in my life bit of mash on the side was fantastic. Highly recommend giving this place a try to warm your stomach.

We jumped the train down from Liverpool to Mossley hill train station and a short walk to Rose lane bring's you to one of the best craft beer bar's/pub's on Merseyside. As you enter you are met with 12 beer's on draught and a mighty bottle selection of European and world beer's.We opted for the Staropramen beer from the Czech Republic, which was just superb, iced cold and refreshing. On other visit's to this bar have had beer's from Germany such as Kupper's kolsch and Belgium,Liefmanns and La Chouffe. There is alway's something new to try and if you feel like bottled beer you can always consult THE BEER BIBLE giving you all the information on the beer's they have.If you are feeling peckish you can have pie's,with a great range supplied by the PIE MINISTER,very tasty.Opening hour's are;Sunday to Tuesday,11am till 11pm.Wednesday to Saturday,11am till 1130 pm.This is a superb bar to go,well worth the trip on the train.

Nice, friendly atmosphere. Menu very limited to 'Pies!!', which is the name of the place, but maybe offer a few more options to cater for partners of people who don't like pie & beer, otherwise there's no point in us visiting!!!Choice of beers is excellent, but PLEASE offer a small variety of really good wine, then I can visit with my 'beer drinking' hubby & friends!!!

Out for a Sunday morning walk and stopped off at Pi. Glad to see that their pies were from the Pie Minister range which take some beating. I settled for the Shamrock Pie and my daughter had the vegetarian Heidi Pie, complete with Creamed Mash, Minted Mushy Peas and vegetarian gravy. This came piping hot and was filling on it's own but managed to wash it down with a pint of Gwatkin's Perry, just one of a wide range of ales, both bottled and on tap. Although it was fairly quiet the background music was very eclectic and suited the atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit and I will be back soon.

Good selection of beers here, I enjoy the ones from Tatton brewery. Nice atmosphere and good mixture of people who come here. We enjoy the pies and it's a good place to go if you can't be bothered to cook and fancy a pie and beer. Presumably the pies are reheated as they are brought out very quickly, but I think that is fair enough as the whole thing wouldn't really work otherwise. Most of the staff are really nice but there are one or two who do seem to have a bit of a "face on." One small thing guys - you need to start getting used to contactless cards. The idea is you offer the card reader machine then the customer can hold the card up to it. Better still, have a card reader machine at the edge of the bar. You should never expect a customer to hand you the card.

Exceptionally good pies, lovely buttery mash, mushy peas and superb beer. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a marvellous night out. If it isn't, you just ain't trying and you should probably go home and watch X-Factor or something, because food and beer are just not your thing.(Apparently even the veggie pie, in this case, the Heidi Pie, was excellent. Don't hold with such nonsense myself... The chicken and ham was a proper pie, however)

Great little place with a friendly atmosphere. After reading negative comments about staff here, I think the writer must have super high expectations! They were busy but friendly. Really good selection of beers - maybe a bit pricier than city centre - but places like this one are rare gems so we didn't mind at all. Big thumbs up for the food. Proper comfort food which left us both very happy! Will visit again some time soon.

I lived in Mossley Hill as a student in the 1980s at the nearby halls. I used to regard the area as a bit of a beer dessert. So it was good to find on this trip down memory lane that this leafy suburb now has a decent outlet for real ales. The place is converted from a shop so has more of a bar/restaurant feel yet has a nice pub atmosphere that is cosy and popular with the locals. The ales were mostly from microbreweries and were in good condition. I also had lunch - in keeping with the pub feel they have a range of pies from the Pie Minister Range. I ordered Matador Pie, this was deliciously filled with British beef, Welsh chorizo, butter beans and olives for £4.75. I ordered desiree potato mash with butter and cream as a side. This was proper mash at £1. There is a choice of 4 pies, 2 of them being vegetarian. Gravy and minted mush pies can be added for an extra £1 but I found the pie quite filling. An interesting place for a chat or to sit with a book or paper and watch the world go by. There is good access to this pub from bus routes and the local rail station is nearby.

We walked over here from the house to try it out. Must have passed by here dozens of times on the way to the gym and it was always quite busy with happy people. I have had savory pies before but as an American it's still something that we would consider very June Cleaver. Until tonight. First let me say you order at the bar, to a guy I would equate to as your beer and pie matchmaker. You pick from a eclectic array of options of taps and bottles. The barkeep was very helpful in suggesting pairings of beer with what I intended to order. I ended up ordering a Lindenbour Draft which was gorgeous, along with Chicken of Aragon pie - free range British chicken smoked bacon and tarragon, mash and minty mushy peas. Now I know why this country loves a good pie. The dish sang and if you were in the area you have to come and eat here. My fiancé ordered a classic steak and Guinness pie which was equally delectable. Perfect neighborhood dinner date - easy and casual for under 25 pound.

It is a Pie & Mash place. the pies are very good and they regularly have a different selection. However it is the beers that Pi is famous for. In so many pubs there is an exhaustive menu of average food and small beer selection. Well here there is a blackboard with for or five different pies available and a very large menu of beers from around the world. Dubbels, Tripels, Pilners, Stouts, IPAs all available here. A great place for a beer.

I have been coming to Pi every week since it opened and I can only assume that the reviews criticising the bar staff are fake as I have only ever encountered politeness, friendliness and good beer knowledge when dealing with the staff here. The choice of beers is exceptional (Goose Island being my favourite) and the atmosphere is perfect. We always take our young son in and he too is always made welcome, along with children of all ages. The music is great and the staff are outstanding; it is undoubtably my favourite bar in the whole of Liverpool.

2.15 on a wet Tuesday afternoon in February is not the time that one would expect anywhere to be buzzing but I was a little surprised on entering to find my wife and I were the only customers and just possibly the first of the day as there was little sign of much having gone before us.Last time I was here in January in a group of six we encountered the barman who has received much negative comment and one could understand why.Today he was there again-or was it an identical twin with a different personality because today he was friendly, polite, informative and efficient. He was interested in his beers and offered me samples of three which were all excellent and I probably havent enjoyed a pint more in a very long time. The pies regardless of fresh or frozen were delicious as was the mash and mushy peas.I wouldnt say it was outstandingly good value but I have paid a little less for a lot worse in other places.I really hope that this more welcoming attitude continues and that Pi is able to recover some of the daytime trade it has clearly lost.Based on today I shall definitely revisit even if its only for a drink.

We wanted a nice brunch together after a visit to the vets nearby, but we had our dog with us. We were delighted to find this cafe that made it clear dogs were welcome inside. Husband had a full English and said it was particularly good. I had some tasty cheese on toast which was just what I fancied, and something which you can’t always get. Finn, our collie, got his own bowl of water once we’d sat down, and ordered his own special portion of chopped sausage and black pudding. He didn’t give a review. He was too busy inhaling it. The new owners haven’t been here long, but I wish them well and hope to be passing by again soon.

Every where there are staffing problems and the yacht club is no exception, however as a frequent visitor to the club I can say they are doing the best they can in such difficult times. The bar supervisor Tony has stepped up to the plate in a position that has pushed him out of his comfort zone. He has a sly sense of humour like most Liverpudlians, he cares about the people he is serving even though he doesn’t smile all the time, he is busy making sure everyone is happy with the food the service etc. This week we arrived just as he was taking an order for 15 people 12 in one group and 3 who had walked in right behind them. He took my order and expressed we may have to wait a bit longer which was fine. The food was lovely and The big group where pleased with their food and service too. When leaving we bumped into the owner Berni who also asked how was our visit he informed us that some of his staff have been employed to give them a second chance to improve their circumstances and I was amazed at his honesty and sincerity. So when you go and people aren’t smiling or telling jokes or even not putting you first maybe stop and think, maybe they are having a difficult day and be the bigger person. I can’t wait for the staffing issues to be resolved to go back to the delicious homemade chips again.
