Pentland Hotel Restaurant in Highland

We ended up having to unexpectedly book & spend a night at The Pentland Hotel, due to bad weather. We chose the Pentland as it was dog friendly. On arrival, we were impressed with the friendly staff & the general appearance of the hotel. We were given a room right at the top of the hotel, which turned out to be very small, very cold. ( radiator not on) with cracked window. We had to ask for fan heater, key to bleed the radiator & extra blankets. We’re used to rooms not being wonderful as we have a dog. Room never really warmed up & bed was too small for both of us. Expressed our concern & was told the room was for single occupancy only. Was also told the manager would contact me, which he did about a week later on a Friday night & left a message on the phone saying he would ring back. He never did & never replied to an email. The food was good & the staff were lovely. However, really disappointed that they allow rooms like this to be used. Would go again for food but not to stay.

Just a quick review on this visit. Called in late for a Sunday carvery. Loads of people and coaches in. Despite this, food was all very fresh and fast moving. Staff friendly and welcoming. We’ve been here in the past for a quick lunch and that was also a positive experience. Would definitely visit here again.

In Thurso gibt es nicht so viele schöne Einkehrmöglichkeiten. Durch Zufall haben wir dann dieses Restaurant, dass zu einem Hotel gehört, entdeckt. Schnell wurde uns klar, warum es gut besucht ist. Gute Speisekarte, nicht zu teuer und freundliches Personal. Genau das, was man sich wünscht. Am nächsten Tag waren wir deshalb nochmal da. Klare Weiterempfehlung!

I had a very tasty lasagne with salad and curly fries and my husband had penne carbonara which he said was delicious. It was a very pleasant dinner and staff were friendly

Amazing Hotel! The staff was amazing. We had an issue with our trip to the Highlands and they were able to find a way to squeeze us in. The restaurant was delicious, room was spacious, and the bed was very comfortable.

We were looking for an evening meal, and Pentland welcomed us and suggested we go through to the bar. We were served a delicious meal, and the barstaff were lovely. Can definitely recommend.

Enjoyed a meal in the busy bar. Generous portions of good food, all reasonably priced. I had bruschetta which was excellent, and lasagne. Reception staff were very pleasant and helpful, accommodated extra guests at the last minute, and allowed us to our table slightly early too. Would definitely recommend

Back in Caithness and once again lovley meals in the Pentland Hotel , Thurso and in its sister hotel The Norseman , Wick. Both never fail to impress. Well done everyone. Definitely worth a visit if you’re doing the NC500. Will be back next visit.

Really disappointed with our lunch. It felt that we were an inconvenience asking for a table. Once at the table we noticed that the table cloth was dirty, and the service was poor. We waited 35 mins for a kids meals and sandwich. The chips were cold, and the kids meal was small. My little one finished it within minutes. For being on the NC500 this place lacks in welcoming people. Thurso needs more places with local food, a simple nice plate of soup and sandwich with good homemade baked goes down a treat.

Very few good choices in Vegetarian/vegan options. Very disappointed. Chef needs plant based/quorn options.

we went as a family of 4 for dinner midweek.We had to wait 20 minutes to even be handed a menu! I think there is possibly a shortage of staff?? service was quite slow.However the food was very good.Lasagne very tasty,garlic bread could have been cooked a little longer.Portion sizes are very generous.

We were struggling to find somewhere we could dine in Thurso with our dog. Plenty offer for you to sit outside, ideal if it's a sunny warm and dry day, but that's no fun in October. Luckily, the Pentland Hotel, Thurso allow you to dine with well-behaved dogs in their reception area. We were able to enjoy delicious fish and chips and a panini in relaxation, without worrying what state our dog would be in when we got back to the car. The staff were friendly and welcoming to us all. Their sister hotel, in Castletown, a few miles further on the NC500 also allows dogs.

Ate here on one evening. I had made a reservation (for 1) and my table was in a appropriately cosy corner. The tasty salmon fillet was excellent, followed by an exceedingly generous cheese board. An all-round good experience.

Called in for Dinner. Very busy but excellent staff found me a table in the bar. I had an excellent three course meal that exceeded expectations with the quality, quantity and cost. The staff were very attentive and helpful and there was a friendly ambiance with the other diners obviously enjoying themselves. Two drams of the recommended whisky were excellent

A nice hotel, a bit dated but offering a good service. The room was nice, the cold tap was an adventure, it would wait till you had all but given up, then surge and power shower from the sink! It got us every time. Breakfast was great including fruit, cereal, porridge and a full Scottish, there were even Tunnocks Caramel Wafers in the basket with Alpen bars, whats not to like about that??

We enjoyed our evening here. Service was bright, friendly and efficient. Food and drinks were good value and portions were generous. It would be great to see some local spirits and beers but that’s a very minor complaint!

Nice hotel, great deal. Lovely food for breakfast. Great service for our evening meal. Also wonderful food at a reasonable price. Decor could possibly do with a touch up here and there. But they probably have had a very challenging time due to coving. But we loved it . Suited our budget

We visited for lunch and received a warm welcome from Andy and his staff. All the food was presented lovely and was extremely tasty and fresh. The hotel decor is quite quirky and traditional. I would highly recommend a visit and would have liked to have stayed longer.

Excellent value for a Sunday Lunch. Choice of meats and veg well cooked and served quickly. It's a Carvery but with table service instead of queuing for your food, works well!! Would advise booking as it appears to be very popular.

Went with husband and two grown up sons. We all had various panini’s and a dessert. Very nice, desserts were delicious. Very good value. Lovely staff.

Wonderful meal with family for all our birthdays since restrictions have eased. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, very pleasant and helpful staff and great food. I don't usually have 3 courses, but was persuaded and could not fault any of it. Thank you

Very enjoyable meal. Really efficient and friendly staff. The starter (crab cakes) was a bit dry, but the rest of the meal was excellent. Very good value for money. Would recommend

We had our evening meal here and the staff were lovely and the food was decent. The restaurant is nice and affordable and caters well for everyone. Would recommend if your looking for somewhere to eat.

We ended up at the hotel as it was the only place we could find open for coffee after 2pm on a November day. We were impressed and returned for dinner the next day. The menu is traditional pub fayre - we opted for haddock & chips - very satisfying. We each had two courses and two drinks. The bill was £50. Would go back. Also looks like a nice place to stay.

Had a lovely lunch today with excellent service. All staff were smiling which added to the friendly and safe atmosphere.

This was our First time at the Pentland restaurant. When I phoned to book the table, the receptionist was quite sharp and rude on the phone, then just hung up. When we arrived we were told we would not be able to drink alcohol with our meal due to current guidelines - this was fine, but if we had been told this at time of booking, we would have held off going for another few weeks. The restaurant decor was dated and dirty, the curtains were stained and grubby and there were no table mats on the table. The waiter brought side plates and cutlery over, and left them in the middle of the table to help ourselves. We asked the waiter a question about the menu and he started talking about something completely different - we had to reiterate the question to him again as he wasn't listening. The starter arrived - it was overcooked and dried out and the side salad was limp, soggy and past its best. The main meals were the same - I was given normal chipolatas and not venison sausages as stated on the menu, the potato was instant dried mash and even the gravy was watery granules not proper gravy. My husbands meal consisted of vaccum packed spare ribs, which were dry and crumbling and in a liquid not a sauce - not fresh. We asked where the ribs were from - the waiter didn't know, and then the chef didn't know! We complained about the poor state of the whole meal as it was very disappointing. The waiter wrote down all our complaints and took them away, and no one came to discuss any of it with us. Then the couple behind us complained as they had found a hair in their meal. When the left the waiter became volatile at the bar with them over a plastic name plate that the manager had said they could have and the waiter became aggressive - shouting that they couldn't have it. Not a great atmosphere with socially distanced few guests in - you could hear everything. The barman really embarrassed himself and made himself and the staff look like idiots. No-one still came to discuss our meal with us - not the chef or the manager, but we were offered the starter for free. That was as good as it was going to get. I was extremely disappointed with the whole Pentland experience. This is supposed to be the prestigious hotel in Thurso and the whole meal experience was totally rubbish from start to finish. It was the first night out we have had since before lockdown in March. I will never visit this over rated under performing cheap raggedy restaurant again. If this is the best Thurso has to offer - I would rather stay at home and cook myself! At least i know where my ingredients are coming from, and they are not the cheapest I could by and I don't try to fob my husband off with made up stories about the menu!

Had a great meal in the bar - staff were very good.Returned the following evening - were put in hotel dining room which was isolated, very grubby and in need of decorating. Meal not as good, staff not so attentive - left immediately after finishing food!

Good hotel.Our room was fresh,clean and all covid rules throughout the hotel been done.Breakfast today was fine with a very nice and helpful waitress.Our evening meal last night in the hotel restaurant was very good with again very smart waiters attending to all their duties.Good value all in.

Second time staying at the Pentland,My room was small, but clean and comfy, tea/coffee making facilities supplied and a bath and shower were also in the room.Good WiFi available free.Food at the hotel restaurant was great, decent helpings, piping hot and fresh,Breakfast was substantial and ready quickly, handy when you have a ferry to catch.Staff were very helpful and informative.Cleaning stations throughout the hotel, social distancing was observed and all staff wore face coverings.Overall, great service and place to stay in these trying times.

Stayed at the hotel for two nights with family, arriving after 7pm on the first night, so decided to try the restaurant. Great decision !Chicken breast with haggis filling, scampi, smoked salmon salad, chicken gougons and salmon were ordered for the 5 of us - all absolutely gorgeous Deserts of banoffee pie, choc fudge cake and cheeseboard equally so. We enjoyed it that much we ate there again the next night.Full Scottish breakfast in the morning definately sets you up for the day.Definitely recommended

Meal was very good however the service was not it took about 30 mins to come for our order and then over an hour before we got food apparently all the staff had just started working there a couple of days before

Spent 2 nights and found the hotel very good and all staff were very helpful Breakfast staff were brilliant and good humoured

Karen and I attended together with approx 50 others mostly ladies, from a local support centre. The tables in the ballroom were beautifully laid out for a Christmas meal and there was plenty of room to move amongst them (I was doing to commorative photography) The food, in quality and quantity, was very good. sorry but we came to the conclusion that the chef could be shown how to properly prepare roast potatoes. The service by the staff was friendly, quick and efficient. Comments overheard from other guests indicated that most, if not all, enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon meal

I went for a meal with my wife, Food was excellent, cooked perfect and presented well on the plates, Staff are friendly and the place is warm and clean,

The food here is always reasonable, I personally tend to have the tortilla salad with cajun chicken, it is the only place that I have been that serves this and I always enjoy it. The main things that let's the pentland down is: 1. the dinning room seems very outdated and in need of refreshment and 2. the bar area the tables seem too low so I personally end up eating my food hunched up and I struggle to get my legs under the table and I notice that alot of other people seem to have the same problem.

Went there yesterday for Sunday Carvery and find the same old problem which I had mentioned in my previous review in March. Suggestion to use Different knives for Pork, Red meat and chicken. But nothing has change which is the shame because food is lovely. But you will loose customers. One more thing to mention please train your employee who was giving bread for soup. That if you don’t have side plate on table please don’t put the slice of bread on table. Bring the side plate first than put the bread on it. Thanks

this restaurant had great food and service. It was very clean and everyone was very helpful. Great assortment at breakfast.

We went to the evening carvery and it was one of the best carverys we have been to. Lovely choice of meat and vegetables and really spoilt for choice with all the lovely desserts. This Carvery ticks all the boxes and the waiter was a delight.

We spent one night at the hotel. We had nice Full English breakfast (buffet). Great choice of jams,juices and fruit as well.

La signora del b&b; ci ha consigliato di cenare in questo hotel perché la domenica sera fanno una sorta di "all you can eat" con piatti scozzesi. Immancabile la soup of the day, fornita in due varianti, di cui è possibile avere un solo piatto.

House wine was very nice and staff were extremely friendly. Food came quickly to the table despite the restaurant being fairly busy. The food was OK but not sure if I'd return. The poached salmon salad (£10.95) came with a very small piece of salmon and, slightly bizarrely, a side of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. It was perfectly nice, but I wouldn't rush back.

In a hotel you should not be ignored by staff. Whoever is training them is not doing a very good job! If we did not go up to get served at the counter I dont think we would have been served as we sat for ages, at least 20 to 25 mins., then gave up waiting. What we should have done was walked out. This is not the way to encourage us to visit again!

We spent 2 nights in late July. The Pentland has had a good facelift since our last visit a few years ago. Breakfast was very good and the room fairly basic but comfortable and clean.

Most of Thurso was still shut Monday night, so food choice still limited. We chose the Pentland through process of elimination in the end ( open and no coach parked outside..). We ate in the pleasant bar area. Food and drink a good standard, and staff helpful.

We were told by staff at our camp site that the Pentland had a carvery, which was lucky rose we would had missed this as outside they only displayed a normal menu. The dining room was fully booked but the bar is also available to eat the carvery. The chef serving the carvery allowed you any choice of the 4 meats, in nice thick slices. My husband had all 4! Then there was a great choice of vegetables and sauces. We ate so much I wasn’t sure I could manage a dessert too, but again the choice was great, and I opted for a meringue. All of the food was well cooked and delicious, and the staff very friendly and helpful. So glad we found this place

Had a very delicious early birthday dinner at the Pentland Hotel. Hot Chili and garlic prawns followed by a cheese and bacon burger. For pudding, a chocolate fudge cheesecake with ice cream. Staff were very nice and service was good.

Was looking forward to going here tonight as we have been here previously and have never left disappointed.

Went there with family for Sunday Carvery. Food was lovely and plenty of choice. Only Thing to complain about or suggestion is please can you tell your Chef don’t use the same knife to carve Pork, Beef, Turkey and Lamb. Due to religious reasons I don’t eat pork and my friend in our group don’t eat Red Meat. But when we saw the Chef using the same knife it put us off from eating meat. Plus in Gravy section there was no information from which meat juices they had made the gravy. So can you please use different knife for pork and red meat, so everyone can enjoy the food. Because it can shows the your restaurant care about to accommodate people from different religions.

I travel a lot on business, so when I am travelling I look for good clean facilities with business use friendly rooms .

On road trip around the top of Scotland - recommended by B and B - best carvery I have ever had. First class. Best selection of desserts I have seen in a long time. Will certainly be back.

We chose to dine in the hotel on our first night in Thurso, but this was more out of convenience than anything else, however it turned out to be an excellent idea !

Having ate at The Pentland many times we opted to go there for a meal with friends on Thursday night. There was 5 of us and all ordered 4 order pasta which we assumed we would have a bit of a wait for however we weren't told by the waiting staff after 45 mins of waiting and not being offered more drinks we began to get fed up. Eventually the food arrived and we asked for more drinks. We weren't offered Parmesan and had to ask for it after 10 mins and still no Parmesan we asked another waiter who eventually came back with some by this point have our food was done. We also advised one of our party was vegan and what meal she was having and she was still given garlic bread on her plate which had butter on it! Our meals were lovely but the service let the visit down.

The Sunday carvery at the Pentland Hotel was recommended to me by the owner of the B&B; I was staying at while on holiday in Thurso, and I have to say it was excellent. I would recommend booking though as they do get very busy. This was early February and they were super busy. As a solo lady traveller I often feel a little self conscious dining alone but needn't have worried here as I was made to feel very welcome. A very nice young man showed me to my table and told me how the carvery worked. The waiting staff bring your starter and drinks, then you basically help yourself to the main meal. I had the tomato soup to start, then there was a selection of meats on offer .. Beef, lamb, pork, gammon etc I had the pork. All carved by the chefs, with as much potatoes and vegetables as you like. There was quite a good selection. Also Yorkshire puds, gravy, sauces etc After munching my way through that lot I went back for dessert. I can safely say I've never seen so many desserts on offer. There must have been over 20 to choose from. I had the very nice fruit trifle. Everything was spot on with very good service as well. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Thurso.

The food served seemed to be good traditional Scottish food and was average to good. The service was friendly and reasonably quick.

Stayed in hotel so popped down for the carvery . Was very busy so make sure you book . had a seat in the bar as lots of people here . The soup was ok . The 5 choices of meat were very well cooked . Good choice of veg etc . It was no issue when i asked for a little more . The desserts were a sight to behold . There was such a large choice i cant even remember how many there was . Very good service and very friendly . I can certainly understand why its very busy tho there wasn't a long wait . very good value

We were recommended to visit The Pentland for dinner and chose Sunday evening, their carvery night. What a feast, fresh home made soup, all the roast joints you could imagine, beef, turkey, pork, lamb...Yorkshire puddings, perhaps twelve different veg, gravy, sauces and at least 20 different deserts. Excellent value, no one could leave hungry, most had to let the food settle before leaving.

Eten was op zich prima wel wat vettig. De verlichting is TL niet heel gezellig maar dat zie je veel in Schotland

Sunday carvery lunch is excellent value for money with very good food.

Was instructed by our B&B; landlady to go here. Turned up at 6.40pm and managed to find someone to ask if there was a table available. He said he would ask but shouldn’t be a problem. He came back and told us that there wasn’t a table available (even though we could see plenty of empty ones and he had previously said there were no more bookings). We took our business elsewhere. Glad you can afford to turn down custom. It all seemed a bit disorganised and no ‘front of house’ restaurant welcoming area.

We visited the Pentland Hotel for the Sunday Lunch Carvery. We were not disappointed. The lunch is three courses. Excellent portions. The Sweet trolley is the best that we have ever seen and it is all included in the £14.50p,.

Had our evening meal here while staying in Thurso. Staff were really friendly and efficient. Food was excellent with a wide choice from a varied menu . Couldn’t fault this great restaurant and hope to return soon .

Had a couple of meals here during my stay (I stayed in a local B&B;). The salmon was excellent, but there was a number of items on the menu that I would have easily enjoyed.

Mijn partner had de stew, die was heel erg lekker. Vooraf hadden we de champignons, die waren helaas gefrituurd. Vind ik niet zo lekker, en niet zo gezond. Ook de garnalen van het hoofdgerecht waren gefrituurd. De ober was aardig, maar hij stonk naar zweet, dat vind ik niet kunnen. Ik zou er niet nogmaals gaan eten.

Nothing good to say about this place at all. The decor is dated and dreary whilst the food was just about the worst I have eaten in years! I would never go back!!

Wir waren hier auf Durchreise zum Mittagessen. Durch Zufall haben wir das Restaurant entdeckt. Alle anderen Restaurants hatten um 14 Uhr bereits nichts mehr zum Essen. Hier gab es Essen. vom Buffet all you can eat. War super lecker und klasse Service. Gehört zum Norseman Hotel and Restaurant in Wick. Dort war es auch klasse.

Duidelijk een oud hotel maar dat wordt pas een probleem als het comfort er onder lijdt. En dat viel reuze mee. Trap op - trap af - de ene gang na de andere. Alles n beetje scheef....De kamer was niet groot maar groot genoeg, de badkamer in orde. Alles was schoon. Het bed was n minpunt: krakend-veren matras, zwaar log dekbed. We hebben geen last van gehorigheid gehad (zaten niet aan de drukke straatkant). Het avondeten was de 1e avond een matig buffet (door n toeristenbus of altijd op zondag?), opgediend in de bar. De 2e avond was het eten prima, wèl ook weer in de bar....Het ontbijt, nu wel in het restaurant, was heel goed. De medewerkers waren allen erg vriendelijk. WiFi ongekend goed, óók op de kamer.

E' il ristorante dell'albergo dove soggiornavamo ed offre buon cibo a prezzi contenuti, sia pesce che carne. I piatti sono quelli della tradizione scozzese e devo dire che qui ho mangiato il salmone più buono che ho assaggiato in Scozia. Personale molto gentile e simpatico, hanno un'ampia selezione di whisky e vini anche italiani. Se posso permettermi, l'atmosfera è migliorabile. Si ha l'impressione di mangiare in un pub, con il bancone imponente ed i tavoli disposti a latere dello stesso. Comunque consigliato.

I booked a table for 6 of my family members for the carvery for fathers day (Sunday 17th June). We arrived promptly and had a wee bit of a wait before being seated. We were told what the soups were and then left. The manager then returned to take our soup and drinks order. Soup arrived quite quickly but it was quite a wait before we received our drinks.....which came in 2 lots. We finished our starters and thought our table may be cleared before we went up for our carvery. No one seamed to notice even though there was several members of staff walking about so we piled the plates on the end of the table, dirty plates were eventually collected half way through our main course. Same thing happened between main and pudding. While we were having our dinner several other groups of people arrived and waited for a considerable amount of time before anybody bothered to see to them. There were several waiters clearing and resetting tables that saw these people waiting and instead of telling them they would just be with them or getting the manager who seamed to be the only one who seats people they just ignored them. We were never asked if we would have liked more drinks or if everything was ok with our meals. Seams to be they just want you in your seats and never to be seen again.

What a waste of money on dinner at this place! We were tired tourists from Canada, late arriving, looking for a place to have dinner. A lot of places in Thurso seemed closed or do not serve food after 8 PM. This place still looked busy at 8:15 so how bad can it be, right? ;)

Het restaurant is niet onaardig. Wat meer aankleding (denk bv aan tafelkleedjes op de tafels) zou de boel al opfleuren. De bediening was prima en spontaan. Het eten was verrassend lekker en ook leuk gepresenteerd. Op onze eerste dag van aankomst hebben we elders gegeten, maar achteraf gezien hadden we dat beter niet gedaan. Het restaurant (en dus niet het hotel) is dan ook een prima keus!

A huge variety if choice for each of the three courses. excellent quality of food. but book as it is very popular

Stopped in just before the kitchen closed and had a good meal. I ate the fish and chips, with a beer from Orkney. Both were good. Topped it off with a dram of Wolfburn, the new, local whiskey.

Staff very attentive , quick service and a good choice on the menu It was a saturday night and they were busy but the waiters were very efficient. I was in a table of 5 and we all enjoyed our food. Reasonable priced too we shall return.

The Pentland has to have the best carvery in the north of Scotland. The staff are fantastic and nothing is too much trouble, great with kids. Great value for money.

De passage à Thurso, nous nous sommes arrêtés pour déjeuner au Pentland. Ambiance familiale, bon rapport qualité prix et un je ne sais quoi de dépaysant pour des étrangers de passage qui nous a rendu cette étape bien agréable.

Arrived after 8pm looking for dinner after our long journey to Thurso and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We have been before and this visit was just as good. Attentive staff and good menu in the warm, comfortable restaurant.

Dropped in for a couple of beers and stayed for dinner. I had the salmon which was perfectly cooked, sometimes salmon can be overlooked but my salmon was perfect. My husband had the special lamb curry and he said it was delicious and it was a huge serving. All of the staff were friendly and efficient. The young man serving our beers was so polite and full of local knowledge. Hopefully will get back then on our return visit to Thurso.

Three of us visited the restaurant unannounced on Wednesday. There were some noisy children in the family section so we sat down at a table furthest away and were able to enjoy a fairly quiet meal. I had battered fish and chip, Karen had Salmon salad and Alison had goats cheese salad. They were of excellent quality and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Maureen and Michelle wee rushed off their feet but despite this served us well and with their usual good cheer. Once again to be truly recommended and we will return. Oh I do wish parents could control their offspring better and not permit them to shout and scream !!!

The Carvery was wonderful. All of the pork, ham (gammon), lamb, beef, and turkey you cared to eat along with a plethora of desert choices for a most reasonable price. The Beef and Ale stew was also excellent. Prices were less in pounds than I would expect to pay in dollars in the states. Some of the other offerings were good, but not as outstanding as others, Well worth the stop.

Came in for lunch on Saturday. Place was packed so after ordering we didn't expect any quick service. The place soon died down & food was coming out the kitchen slowly, so on the assumption most people had their food we were hopeful we'd be next. Only after a total of 45 minutes waiting & observing 2-3 tables who came in after us being served their meals did we get ours, and this was after an observant waitress noticed we'd been waiting awhile.

A Sunday carvery which is just awesome . There was a choice of 5 meats all cooked very well . The choice of veg was mind boggling tho some I think from frozen . The food in general was very good and 3 course carvery was unbelievably good value . The place was so busy I'd recommend booking a table as I o my got in by skin o my teeth .

An evening meal which was disappointing, served in surroundings that was apart from the normal restaurant, with service almost non-existent. Very poor quality of food, cold chips and spare ribs poorly cooked and tough.

Although we did not stay at this hotel we enjoyed a very nice meal here, reasonably priced. Pleasant and helpful staff.

Near to our B and B so went for dinner. Average meal overall, edible but not particularly good. Surroundings are dated and dull. Service was good.

Visited 2 years ago and gave this Hotel a rave review. Hate carverys most of the time as I prefer my own but this one surpassed even mine. I hoped that it had not changed - it hadn't, what a fab lunch. As Thurso is very small we knew it was the place to be on a Sunday and how right we were. We booked a table, and had a drink in the bar before we ate. The very helpful staff showed us the white wine list and placed a bottle of Pinot Grigio on ice for us which was taken in the the main restaurant when we sat down. We started with tomato soup - great taste and then attcked the carvery. All the chefs were very busy carving the four roasts on offer and offering you 5 different types of potato and yorkshire puddings. Around the corner of the counter was the biggest selection of vegetables I have ever seen. The gravy and sauce options were also fab. The dessert selection was magnificent and akin to the standards of Masterchef or a patissiery in Paris. Choices were incredible, hot, cold, pies, tarts, fresh fruit, creams, yoghurt, cakes, custard...........Needless to say we rolled home for a well earned rest. Thanks to all staff involved, well worth visiting from Portsmouth, hope to see you all again next year!!

Being a resident of Thurso, I've never stayed at the Pentland Hotel, but eat here quite frequently (Trip Adviser ask for a 'date of visit' in the review so I have put my most recent visit butI go there a lot). The menu offers a fairly decent variety of starters, mains and desserts, and I have never been unhappy with the quality of food (the portions are a very good size and it's all very tasty), or the service I have received, and have never had to wait very long for food to arrive once ordered, which is astounding really given the amount of coach parties they often have which must put a strain on the kitchen. Once or twice there has been a mistake with my order, but, that happens! Any time that has happened, the staff have always been apologetic, helpful and made adjustments to the bill where appropriate. I always look forward to eating here!

Went as part of our NC500 tour passing through Thurso. Husband is not keen on Sunday carvery as always feels its a nice idea but a let down in the execution. This is the first one he said he would go back to! Started with home made soup, then had the turkey and accompaniments (turkey was lovely!). Also had apple crumble and custard for dessert and that was lovely too. Really nice and would definitely go back if in the area again! The head waiter (tall, slim build with glasses) was so friendly and welcoming and was ensuring everything ran smooth and obviously is good at his job and enjoys it.

Great quality food in large portions for a good price. I had the salmon with pasta which was lovely and I was even given the choice of what type of pasta I wanted. My mother had the scampi which was also generously portioned.
