Penny Black’s has always been great and we have been many times over the years. This week we went and were told by the lady in the adjacent antiques and vintage shop that Penny Blacks closed just before lockdown. You will see signs around Lyme advertising it, which indicates it is still trading, but unfortunately it isn’t.

We only popped in by chance as it had started to rain! Thank goodness it did rain, what a little gem. We had sandwiches which were beautifully made with a little side salad. We didn't really want anything else butter we were full but we couldn't leave without tasting the "thunder and lightening" scone (scone served with treacle and clotted cream) surprisingly it works! Also enjoyed the date and apple flapjack. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you Penny Black

Whilst staying for a week in Lyme Regis we decided to treat ourselves to a cream tea. Looking at Trip Advisor two tea rooms were well recommended (Black Dog Tea Room & the Penny Black). As we were in the town we visited the Penny Black and whilst it was quite small inside (there were also tables outside) the menu looked fine and so we treated ourselves (7 of us in total with 3 children) to cakes and cream teas. The cream teas offered a choice of scones with jam and clotted cream and a choice of home made cakes were also available. We thoroughly enjoyed what we had and the children also enjoyed hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream topping. The prices were reasonable and we found the staff very courteous and helpful. At the end of the tea we had an interesting chat with the owner who was extremely friendly and the whole experience was one we will fondly remember. As space inside is a bit limited I am not sure what it would be like on a busy day but rest assured if the experience is like ours you should be leave satisfied and happy.

In the years of absence there has been a change of ownership, but the Penny Black tucked away behind the post office is still inviting, if anything a little more individual in style. Out of pallets they have created a lovely nook for a gossip, and a place to listen to the birdsong and be grateful for the peace. The china is still eclectic, the coffee restorative, the cakes to demolish and despair when finished. My favourite Dorset apple cake, the new owners, friendly and informative, lovely little place.

We had to wait to be served, felt like 10 minutes, whilst the waitress chatted to 2 other customers who she knew. We nearly walked out ~ I wish we had. The cream on the cream teas was 'ropey' meaning, going into ropes, and it had a sharp taste, not unpleasant, but not as nice as cream usually is. We have eaten 'ropey' yoghurt before and had no ill effects so ate it. About 4 hours later we had belly-ache which I attribute to food poisoning caused by the ropey cream. It was the cream, or maybe the cake, as we didn't have anything else to eat between the cream tea and the belly ache.

Based on the 5 star positive reviews we decided to give this little cafe a go for afternoon tea. It is tucked away at the back of the post office so I doubt you would find it by accident. Although trip advisor states it shuts at 5pm there was a sign at the entrance informing us that it shuts at 4:30pm?! Since we arrived at 2:55 it wasn’t a big deal but were then greeted with the message that the kitchen shuts at 3pm?! Again since we were only after cream teas it wasn’t a deal breaker but had we wanted something hot then we would have been disappointed. Clearly it’s not only the decor that is quirky. Our home made cream teas were delicious, although they only had plain left as they had had a rush on cream teas that day, and the service was very polite and quick. Tea was served in real cups and the fancy teaspoons were a nice touch.

We were visiting Somerset for the weekend with my family (8 people). We decided to spend a very wet and windy day at Lyme Regis. After walking around for a while looking for somewhere to eat, my dad spotted the sign for Penny Black, not many places were big enough to fit us all in, but we were very lucky that we caught this place at a quiet period. The staff, even though most were young adults, were so friendly and welcomed us all in. They all served us with a friendly smile, adjusting the tables to ensure that we sat together, without looking like this was a burden on them. The food was, like the service was impeccable, faultless to even say. Everything was homemade, and all looked delish! Not one of us left a drop!

Arriving in town later than planned due to horrendous traffic, we needed somewhere to grab a nice quick lunch and happened across a sign for Penny Black; we followed the directions, but ended up in an antique-type shop, but lo and behold, there was a cafe there after all, opening up onto a little courtyard with outside tables. We all chose various types sandwiches and without fail they were all better than we expected; bigger, tastier and certainly more well-filled than I imagine can be found elsewhere in town, with the added knowledge that they were freshly prepared to order. I thought that it was a shame that the cooked breakfast wasn't available at lunch time, but I was more than happy with my chicken and bacon sandwich as a replacement option. There wasn't a table spare during the 45mins or so that we stayed; as soon as one became free there were people sitting down again; a sign of a healthy business and good local reputation.

Had the full English before a day of coastal walking. Food very nice and staff make an effort with vintage clothing which makes all the difference. It is right next to an antique/,fossil market. Loved it.

This is real little find. Right up the top of the High Street on the right inside the curio shop, which is also interesting. The décor in the café is great. All rock 'n roll and cinema. The effect is lovely, but not as lovely as the girl who dresses and looks very much like Marilyn Monroe. Very sexy and sweet. The coffee and cakes etc are good also. We also tried the savouries - sausage and bacon - also good. There are also outside tables if weather permits

Last day in Lyme Regis and we found this wonderful place. Friendly staff, lovely setting and outstanding food. Nothing else to say except ‘have lunch there’.

A little tricky to find as it is down a small alley but so glad we did! Delicious coffee and the Rocky Road was AMAZING! Full of local people which was great as we felt a really warm welcome. It does get busy but really worth a trip!

Popped in for morning coffee. Huge large mugs and really friendly owners/staff. We decided there and then to return later for lunch which we did. Fabulous toasties with plentiful fillings. Wish we’d had room for their delicious looking cakes. Will definitely return to to try them.

We had a reservation for 12 for an impromptu gathering of the generations for a first birthday. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The daily specials suited us all. The milkshakes (I am told) were fabulous and the hot chocolate was decadent - oh those calories! There's a lovely outside area for the good weather and the small cafe is decorated with vintage memorabilia. Quite charming. A hidden gem.

We went for lunch having seen TA reviews - it isn't the most obvious lunch destination, being accessed through the Post Office then an antique shop!We sat outside in the courtyard garden, having ordered the food at the counter. The staff were in 50s vintage clothing to add to the atmosphere. The food - frittata and chicken/cheese/pineapple toastie were both good - flavoursome and filling. The banana milkshake was awesome and the cappuccino good. We managed to share a Dorset apple cake with clotted cream although the treacle and ginger cake also sounded tempting.Service was prompt. Tables were cleared quickly. Great value at under £20. Cash only - co cards.

At the back of the Post Office with a nice dog friendly garden. Interesting antique and fossil stalls to weave through on the way. When you get there you have a splendid traditional English cafe, excellent spot.

Great tasty late afternoon breakfast and toasted scones. Friendly service and ambience. The cafe is a family run business and is located off the main square in Beauminster so could easily be missed. It was a Monday and most of the cafes were closed and the few that were open had only cold food so it was great to find somewhere serving warm food. Look for the orange sign on the square or outside the cafe. The cafe has artwork and crafts on display as well as books and is light and bright.

Went for lunch and had mushrooms on toast. I have to say I thought it was genuinely horrible. The mushrooms were served in a thick, glutinous sauce that looked truly unappetising and tasted even worse. Overall, very sickly. As I was hungry I managed to eat about half but left the rest. My wife had a salad, which she enjoyed, and after seeing and tasting my meal told me I had ordered badly. We finished with cake and coffee. The cake was very sweet but otherwise unremarkable. Quite expensive for what we had so I shan't go again but my wife will probably go with friends/a friend when the weather's nice and they can sit outside.

Cherries Abbey Farmlocation-iconCherries Abbet Farm, Church Street, AbbotsburyOther cuisines

We arrived mid-afternoon and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, feeling welcomed by the friendly staff. We ordered the cream cheese and salmon bagel and the ham and egg on brioche bun with fries. All were really well presented along with a delicious pickled veg and leafy side salad. High quality, tasty food. The coffees were made with skill and tasted really good. The large range of cakes looked superb so we left with some brownies to take away which was a very good decision - delicious! The interior is thoughtfully designed with very pretty decor - you can tell the owners really care about their business. Dogs were welcomed and this always makes a place better in my opinion. I would recommend Cherries and will definitely return here.
