We have recently stayed in the Pennan Inn. We visited as many do because of Local Hero, that said the place has a magic all of its own. The staff, Peter, Chloe and Eithan were brilliant. The hotel is clean and ticks all the boxes. The food is out of this world, beast steak I've had. We had room no2 which over looked the bay and phone box. The room was very clean and just fitted the bill, slept for over 8 hours. Breakfast really good. Over all can't say ebough for the place. We came as fans of the film but will return soon as fans of the place. All the best to Peter, Chloe and Ethan.

Came here 20 years ago with no time to stop but came back as it’s been a #BucketList place ever since We travel far and wide professionally and personally and simply miss what’s not far from our very own doorstep. An absolute hidden gem both from nourishing the soul and nourishing the body. We booked the room overlooking the front of the hotel with lashing waves and a panoramic view. The room is very clean and ample, allowing the view to be central stage. A comfy bed and a full Scottish breakfast compliments the relaxing experience. Evening meals were lovely and the hotel may on the surface appear small but the experience is large. Peter the owner and chef and Chloe make you feel welcome. Chloe is simply a gem for this business. We really recommend this place for a quiet yet nourishing relaxing retreat ... ps the Local Hero phone box and media image is good but to be honest, it’s simple beauty and tranquility were good enough for us... we will return...

Pennan, for the few people who don’t know is the town of ‘Ferness’ in the movie Local Hero. Thirty six years later it looks pretty-much the same as it does in the film. The Pennan Inn, although not the actual hotel in the movie (that was actually three private residences, a couple of doors down, made to look like one establishment), stands on its own as the place to stay in this exquisite former fishing village. We were invited to upgrade our room for one overlooking the seafront which is just 20 feet away from the door of the Inn. We are so glad we did. The room was airy, spotless, well appointed and the kind of place you could sit in a nice chair (provided) and spend an hour or two just letting your mind get lost out in the waves. The beds were just perfect, being soft but not suffocating. If you felt inclined you could have a nice ‘lie-in’ just looking out to sea from the bed!You pick your preferred time to go down to breakfast the evening before. In the morning, you simply turn up, enjoy the selection of cereals or yoghurt while you order from a simple but wholesome hot-breakfast menu. Peter, the owner, is also the Chef and cooked our breakfast orders exactly as we requested. Chloe who tended our tables was also a mine of tourist information and went the extra mile sharing her local knowledge of attractions. In the evening they run a full restaurant, although an advanced booking is essential. We found the food offered quite comprehensive and top class. The bar will make you wish you lived in Pennan so you could make it your local. Quite compact but big enough to accommodate guests and drop-ins alike, and very cosy on a cold evening. They have tables outside on the seafront for the warmer months.Just be aware that the hotel is closed to non-residents during the day, and is locked (unlike the one in the movie) until 4pm. There are no other pubs or shops in the village, but two major towns are just a 20 minute drive down the main road in both directions. Access to Pennan is down a very steep, winding, and narrow hill, emerging right next to the Inn, so drive very carefully, and be prepared to back up to a passing point. In summary, a lovely, must-visit, town with a great hotel/bar/restaurant standing at its heart. Don’t miss it.

I have been visiting the Inn for over 30 years and several times during Peter's ownership (roughly the last 10 years) - - I was very pleased on this visit to see the Inn flourishing under his continued proprietorship and the hard work of his kind and dedicated staffers, Chloe and Ethan. The overall level of accommodation has definitely been raised since our last visit with the staffers sporting colorful Pennan Inn shirts and the comfort and amenity level in the accommodation rooms definitely stepped up. Meal service, both breakfast and dinner, were exceptional with Peter in the kitchen continuing to offer a broad range of options including some novel curries and other Asian-inspired dishes (special marks for the seafood curry - - bursting with flavor and well-prepared prawns, mussels and squid). My only suggestion, and I know these decisions are complicated, would be for Peter to open the pub to the general public on a regular basis - - the Pennan Inn bar has over the years been a gathering spot for the community and it would be wonderful for it to return to that role of connecting residents and visitors over pints and conversation. Highest marks to Peter and the Inn!

Having had a superb lunch last summer we stopped off on our wee tour of the countryside for a meal at the Pennan Inn on a cold, rainy evening. Getting out of the car the sea was roaring and the wind was bitter. Stepping into the cosy bar and into the warmth we were cheerily greeted by a friendly girl, who gave us our menus and showed us to our table in the smart, cosy restaurant. She was incredibly hospitable and as well as meeting and greeting, barmaiding and waitressing kept up a friendly chat with all diners. The menfolk enjoyed Inveralmond Brewery beers, there was a good wine selection and the food was first class, every course was delicious and good portions. Would recommend a visit and will be back again.

Arrived on Saturday for a one night visit with my two sons. For us it was a visit to take in the sites of the fictional "Furness" from Local Hero and when you drop down the steep road into the village with the music playing it does grab you. The hotel and village where used for a lot of the scenes in the film. The hotel has been renovated since then, after all it was 1983. The real buffs will soon see the centre piece red telephone box is not in quite the right place and the front of the hotel in the film is actually a house a couple of doors down, however when you look at this tiny bay and listen to the sea over the rocks you are on the set!!

Intended to pass through Pennan having walked around to see the setting for my favourite film of all time but was so taken by the village that i wandered into the Pennan Inn to see if they had a room for the night. Was met by the owner Peter who could not have been more welcoming and showed (see before you buy) me a delightful room with generous bathroom and glorious views over the harbour. I was the only guest that night and felt like it was own personal residence right in the middle of this stunning village. I was welcomed to a dinner at one of 2 tables for 2 in the bar area that felt very authentic and as usually happens in such places easily chatted with other guests. The food was wholesome and Peter is a good chef, but really Peter is that the best source of Hamburger? It was all beautifully presented, real cutlery, crockery, condiments; no pre-packaged stuff at Pennan Inn but the burger was far too sausagey firm but that's the only reason I only gave 4 stars for food. Surprisingly good wine list for such a small remote place. The breakfast was fabulous and proved that with the right ingredients Peter can put together a fabulous spread. Nothing was too much trouble and I can't wait to come back to this special and unique place.

Mmmmmmm? We had driven an hour and a half to get to the Pennan and stopped into the Pennan Inn for lunch to be told (5 minutes before service was finished) that they had stopped serving. Whilst I fully appreciate that they could not start a fresh service for us, there was no interest given into how they may be able to accommodate us - I even asked if they could make us a sandwich which the barman replied no without even going into the kitchen to check. The bar staff (2 people) seemed more interested in making coffee than trying to assist us - there were a handful of other people in the whole place so not exactly swept off of their feet. For those that know the area, there is nothing else in Pennan (not even a shop) for us to go to. It is a small business and was surprised to see that there had been some awards given to the place in the past. It could just have been inexperienced staff but the worst service I've seen in a long time

Great job!We were a little shocked when we were told by our waiter that we could not have another beer. We have since looked up that the drink drive limit in Scotland is lower than England. Fair play for challenging us but perhaps could have been done in a less embarrassing way by informing us of this discretely rather than in front of other diners. However it did not dampen the experience by much as the food was great just hope the place is run as well if the Inn sells and changes hands again.

The food was very good and portions were fairly large (9 langoustines as a starter was impressive, especially for the cost). We were all a bit dull in choosing the monk fish stir, apart from the one who had the chicken curry.Unfortunately we were too full for puddings!

Although the menu is short, it is varied and what it lacks in breadth is more than made up for in quality. The ingredients are locally-sourced, carefully prepared and well presented. The prices are very reasonable and the wine list complements the menu well, again at reasonable cost. The service is attentive and efficient without being intrusive.

First visit to this place yesterday evening. Very quaint, cozy and well maintained. The staff were friendly, and prices seemed reasonable. We were the first two in so had full attention. We ordered drinks and were provided chilled water for the meal too. I went for the soup of the day which was pepper and tomato. Was blended and served with bread and butter. Was lovely, nice and hot, thick texture and tasty. Next up were the mains. I went for the peterhead haddock & chips while the other half went for the lemon sole. Both were excellent. Tasted Straight out of the water, very fresh and big portions too. The batter on the haddock and the crumbs on the sole were perfect - crispy and tasty. Slices of lemon were provided and salad garnish and tartare sauce if wanted. No room for dessert but had a nice coffee afterwards. The views and atmosphere of this place are outstanding. Would highly recommend it. Price wise wasn't too bad, £20 a scull including drinks with several cheaper options for kids (under15's). The menu had enough choice for anyone to find something they would like, with several vegetarian options available. Can't wait to go back again!

Mr Bridie and I celebrated our 10th Wedding Anniversary with a short break to the Aberdeenshire North Coast staying in Gardenstown. After a glorious day visiting many of the neighbouring fishing villages we had a wonderful dinner at the Pennan Inn.My pea and mint soup served with beautiful seeded bread and butter was delicious as was Mr Bridie's platter of garlic mushrooms. We both opted for the Beer Battered Haddock with chunky chips which, as well as tasting wonderful, was a deceptively large portion and beautifully presented with a colourful side salad. The staff were all very pleasant and attentive.Certainly worth a visit.

The menu selection reflected the covers, however the food was freshly prepared and presented without fuss, we found the bar and restaurant friendly being both cosy and inviting. The decor was modern and well kept. Prices of drinks and food were reasonable. The staff which is basically husband and wife were friendly and engaging without being intrusive. We would definitely recommend this as a place to eat if visiting the Moray coastline.

Also as a matter of interest. This inn and the phone box outside was used in the Burt Lancaster film Local Hero.Good choice menu. All food locally sourced.Excellent value for money.

My friend and I had booked an evening meal at the Pennan Inn on the advice of a local man we'd met in Gardenstown and we weren't disappointed. The atmosphere was calm and civilised and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. My friend and I both had steaks and agreed that they were amongst the best steaks we've ever had in a restaurant. There was no fat on them and they were perfectly cooked. The waiter was friendly and helpful. Service was a tiny bit slow, but that didn't matter as we were happy to have a relaxed meal.Pennan in a gorgeous place and it was a lovely evening so we enjoyed a stroll along the seafront afterwards. This restaurant is very popular so you definitely need to book.

This was recommended in the visitors book for our self catering cottage. We call on the way back from a day touring the coast. The Inn was closed when we arrived in the village, but opened at 5pm only 15 mins later so we had a stroll along the seafront and popped in when they opened to try to book a table. They were booked but advised we could eat immediately. We accepted and were shown through to the restaurant. A very pleasant room I loved the seaside themed tealight holders. The menu had good variety but a little expensive. All meals are cooked fresh so take a while but this is a positive and adds to the none rushed atmosphere. We all had fish options and our daughter had the childs curry. We were all too full to have a dessert.

Nice food in a beautiful coastal area. Although there wasn't any dishes which jumped out of the menu on that day for myself personally, there is definately something for everyone to enjoy - I chose a chicken stiry fry and my boyfriend had a steak and both were presented beautifully and tasted great. The atmosphere wasn't great but we had quite an early reservation so the place wasn't too busy at the time - TIP: book in advance to avoid disappointment. Situated in a lovely place, although a bit of a nightmare of a drive! Staff were very welcoming and friendly and extremely professional! We also really liked the way the menu was set out like a newspaper, very authentic and a nice touch! One thing I would love to see them introduce would be prosecco by the glass or small bottles of prosecco as chances are when couples visit one of them will have to drive and I'm not likely to order a whole bottle of prosecco for myself. Look forward to returning in the future.

Set in the tranquil historic fishing village of Pennan. The Pennan inn serves delicious local cooked food in its humble abode. Although the menu is relatively small, in regards to choice and selection. The haddock which i ordered was perfect and the homemade tartar sauce was very tasty. My only issue is that we had toWait over 40 minutes for our food. However the hotel was busy as we visited on a very sunny Sunday.

Had a very nice lunch there and decided to go back there for a drink and to book dinner later in the week. Ordered drinks with some difficulty, as understanding the barman who had obviously not had a lot of training in hospitality was not easy.My husband then had the temerity to ask for crisps. we were told forcefully they did not sell them. when we expressed surprise, the reply that it was a restaurant ( we were only in the bar ) we were told we could leave if we did not like it !!! I have never experienced such verbal aggression from someone in hospitality, Go for the food, but be careful not to express an opinion they might not like. I am glad it is for sale.

Phoned to book a table a few days in advance and only just got in! Surely a good sign? Well yes, we were welcomed and shown straight to our table. Its been many years since my last visit and the interior has been very tastefully decorated with neutral tones and natural wood etc furniture. Even though the furnishings were modern a sense of the past has been included with pictures and nik naks of times gone by in a small fishing village. We perused the menu which wasn't extensive however there would be something for most tastes on it. It was good to note that there were many ingredients that were locally sourced, I chose the Smoked Salmon Pate which was delicious. My only criticism would be that the salad could have done with some dressing on it.For my main course i tried the fillet steak, served with rosemary potatoes. I chose a side order of some steamed vegetables and onion rings with a pepper sauce on the side too. Now these onion rings were so crispy and sweet even after sitting as we ate the rest of our meal they were still crunchy. Steak was very tasty and reasonably prices at £22, it wasn't a small fillet either. Pepper sauce had quite a kick to it. I had a Belgian waffle with homemade toffee sauce and icecream for a dessert which again was lovely. The staff were attentive without being too in your face, all were very polite and efficient. I would recommend this place and will be returning.

We went here for some lunch on Sunday 28th June, the food was absolutely divine, between us we had Black pudding-2 thick chunky slices, battered, with salad and homemade red onion chutney(starter), fish and chips with home made tartare sauce, childrens chicken fillets(which was NOT that processed rubbish, this was the real McCoy),Belgian waffle with ice cream and toffee sauce and last but not least Creme Brulee(to die for!!).The girls that serve are pleasant and polite and not hovering over you asking if everything's ok. The question is, would we go back? Undoubtedly without hesitation, quite reasonably priced as well. 5 stars to the Pennan Inn(Oh and the views aren't too bad either ;) )

This really is a true hidden gem! Down at the bottom of the steepest hill lays the tiny harbour village of Pennan. Once I assume a busy fishing village now a hove of quiet holiday cottages but it is also home to the Pennan Inn.Visited with my family who live in the area and visit regularly. Not much to look at from the outside - no fancy paint work and in your face advertising - just a simple frame with today's menu in it. Inside it is cosy and welcoming which more often than not is certainly a must for the cold and almost always windy area of Aberdeenshire! We were greeting by a delightful Thai lady who offered drinks at the bar then showed us through to our table. We were given menus that resembled newspapers, quite cute really. I ordered the lemon sole to start and followed by Thai green chicken curry. The menu covered all tastes with a slight Thai influence from the owners wife. I thought you can't not have fish of some sort in the fishing capital of the UK or sample a traditional Thai dish made only how they know how! I certainly wasn't disappointed! Fresh, flavoursome and fuss free the food spoke for itself! This is by no means Michelin star but credit where credit is due the chef sure can cook! I had no room for pudding but others in the party did and it also looked scrummy.Service was polite and nothing was too much trouble, you were made to feel as though you'd visited a million times before! In my opinion the Pennan Inn is an understated, underrated well kept secret.A true example of never judging a book by its cover! A must visit if in the area but booking ahead is well advised as it seems a few folk have got to know of this tiny little place!

Heard about this place from friends and after dog walking, me and my wife dropped in for an Ad Hoc dinner. Very relaxed but also smart and chic. So surprising considering where it is. Food was fantastic and is all locally sourced and freshly produced. I had a black pudding starter, and posh fish and chips. Wife had the best fillet steak she has ever tasted. Simply put, one of the best meals we have both had. Definitely coming back.

We walked in on a Sunday lunchtime without booking and after a short wait in the bar, managed to get a table for two. Admittedly this was in October though. It was still pretty busy so I can imagine it'd be packed at the height of the season. As others have mentioned, the menu is small and has an emphasis on Asian dishes, which we weren't really in the mood after lots of walking on a cold October Sunday. I had the rump steak, which was really good. Tender, juicy and flavourful. My partner had the haddock which he really enjoyed. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was served promptly. If you're just looking for a bit of basic pub grub after being out walking, you might find it a bit pricey and the menu a bit 'fussy' however we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and it'd be a good place for dinner or for a special occasion.

We were staying in the area so visited once for lunch and were so impressed we went back the next day for dinner. The menu isn't huge but what is on it is quite varied and uses lots of local ingredients. There is also a small children's menu available. The food was delicious and portion sizes were quite big. It is not the cheapest place for lunch, but the cost for dinner was around what I would expect to pay in a good restaurant. The location is amazing and the road down into Pennan is steep and twisty, but it's worth the journey. It's probably worth booking a table at dinner time as the restaurant isn't very big.
