Papas Fish and Chips Restaurant in Shepway

Bought large haddock and a portion of chips for dinner yesterday, £9.70 fish only £ 3.70 chips only. Very dis-appointing, plenty greasy batter and little fish, chips very greasy also. Expensive, I expect seagulls would agree.

We've been 2-3 times now for lunch (+ one takeaway). We've enjoyed really good fish &chips, service from a lovely lady and reasonable prices. Our grandkids love it too and always clear their plates. Can't beat it.

Incredible! First of all, the people for very kind, gracious, and helpful. They answered all of our American questions. Papa’s has some of the best fish I’ve ever tasted. I usually dunk my fish in plenty of ketchup, but this was delicious eating it as is. The chips were decent, but the biggest delicious surprise was the banana fritter! WOW!! Get it with maple syrup and you can thank me later. We had two three fish specials, one fritter, and a bottle of Tango, and spent less than 13£.

Great Fish & Chips (plus lots of other things) and always freshly cooked. Very good service. We use Papas regularly, both for take Away and family meals.

Visited today for my nans 90th birthday with my family. Staff amazing, especially lady with dark hair and glasses who accommodated us with a pram, high chair and walking stick as soon as we walked through the door. Nothing too much trouble. Food was good and very reasonably priced. We all enjoyed. Just overall a lovely place to visit with the family. Have also been before and felt a very warm welcome. Will 100% return.

Called in when travelling through,nice lady serving,but took ages to get the fish,that’s when I knew I’d spent over twenty quid for nothing,chips old and the fish batter was actually burnt,the seagulls loved them

The food here is really nice and I can't fault the quality. However, you seem to get a lot less for your money now and it is seriously overpriced. £4.60 for a large chips is disgusting.

Thank you to the lovely staff that gave our 3 tired, grumpy and hungry children a free tray of chips to munch on whilst they waited for their food to be cooked. Yummy fish and chips, would recommend.

Very disappointed with the portion size, the cod was small and the huss tiny, the chips were a much smaller portion than they used to be and the price has increased. 1 x cod and chips, 1 x huss and chips, 1 tea and one soft drink was £31.00 and in my view does not represent good value for money. I shall not be returning.

I've been to papas many times, the battered fish is amazing,the chips are usually very good too ,however we ordered the quarter chicken for a change and was massively disappointed. We indeed got a quarter of a chicken ,good size ..however they just dropped it in to a fryer with no coating or flavour,it was so dry and tasteless. It doesn't take much to season some flour and coat it a little. Even a thin batter would have been something. Maybe look in to that in future. Your customers deserve a little more effort and it doesn't cost a lot at all to do a thin coating to help keep the chicken from being dry.

The Restaurant is smart and clean. Nice atmosphere with soft music. very relaxing to have a meal. Excellent service with friendly and helpful staff. The food Excellent. Dover-sole, Grilled to perfection, chips perfect. Good selection of deserts, old favorites Apple Pie, Treacle sponge, Spotted Dick etc. They also have a good selection of other meals. I Highly recommend a visit.

We usually get takeaway but today ate in the restaurant. Very pleasant staff, good freshly cooked fish and chips with a decent mug of tea. Very clean everywhere.

After reading the great reviews I was expecting to enjoy my fish and chips but I was sadly disappointed. The batter was greasy, the fish wet and my chips were minus the vinegar and ketchup/tomato sauce that I requested. Will not be returning.

Always nice to eat here. The staff or so friendly and kind and always take the time to get to know their customers so if you are a repeat customer they remember you. which my little girl loves.

No one can find fault with Papa's. Menu is varied. Youngsters can order the seniors' meal. Old uns can order a (large and cheap) kids meal. Just go there. Staff are all wonderful. Leave a big tip.

Im a local to folkestone so im always happy to find a place where you can eat good food with a friendly staff. If you fancy a good fish and chips then i highly recommend this place. I will be back for more.

We were in Folkestone for two nights,we had dinner here on our first night.This was our second visit(we came her last year).we had haddock and grilled salmon,very good!

I decided to visit this restaurant whilst staying locally & loved it so much that I went back the very next day, as both the service & the food quality were outstanding, they also do have a take away at the front of the premises.The first time I ordered the cod & chips with a portion of mushy peas just in case the chips were dry like some places are, I was served by a lovely friendly lady who took my order & brought it out to me when it had been freshly cooked, the cod was just how I like it, thick, moist & chunky pure white fish that was cooked to perfection, encased in the most lightest melt in your mouth batter, the chips were very tasty potato quality & the mushy peas were generous & hot just like everything else was, the next day I chose just the cod & chips & ordered from a different but equally friendly lady, when my meal arrived the batter did look darker than the previous day & I worried that the fish may of been dry inside as I didn't order mushy peas, but wrong as it was still equally as tasty plus I actually could of eaten it again & I NEVER really eat that much, whoever lives local & has this as their local chip shop or a regular user of this relaxing restaurant are EXTREMELY lucky people, fantastic quality & a 5 star service, thank you so much!!

You need to enter the shop to place an order but then wait outside until it’s ready.new we’re really unclear as to whether we needed to go back into the shop - which would mean queuing all over again - or whether it would be brought out to us.When our order finally arrived, the chips were OK but though the quality of the fish was good, the batter was disappointing. It only partially covered the fish and was not particularly crisp. We’d try somewhere else next time.

I arose early (not in that way), and mulled over two of life’s ‘great’ eternal grievances - the M26 and M20. Perchance, what kind of ‘Merry Satanic’ (oxymoron) issues would they provide today?....but nay matter - several hours later, a late lunch was required, and being oh so very close to the coast, the cuisine of choice was....fish and chips!!!Decent sized venue. Clean and tidy. Staff and service all good.Nice diverse menu!I myself opted for the Whitebait which came, nicely packaged, with very decent chips and even a salad.Colleague (or nit-wit) opted for the Haddock and chips, which looked very good as well.Overall, very enjoyable lunch indeed, whilst on the move in the Garden of England

Had an evening meal here recently, all staff were very friendly, the restaurant was very clean and all the food was presented well and tasted really nice. Reasonably priced, will return on our next visit to Folkestone..My only gripe was that there was too many other customers walking around, using toilet, cigarette breaks etc, without wearing a face mask.....

Just been in for lunch, covid secure tables placed apart and felt safe. Lunch was good both fish and chips were hot and staff were attentive. Would recommend.

Best chips in town not so keen on the fish as had skin on eew but most of the chip shops down here seem to serve the fish with skin on

This is up there with the best seaside fish & chips. Chips are good and not dry like some places. Chip portions are generous (a 'small' is adequate even for a large eater!).I'd recommend the haddock over the cod (a lot more flavour). A 'medium' is big enough for most people. The batter is light and not oily like many places.Too many chippies get away with fish and chips that are tasteless, dry, and just wasted calories!Short walk to eat on benches with views of the sea / Lower Leas Coastal Park.

we chose this place after reading the reviews on trip advisor and also our recommendation from our host,we had the large haddock and chips which was delicious and very generous!a 2 mile walk was needed afterwards!

The food was good, though taking a little too long to prepare for a fish and chip shop. The portions were huge, but not a really cheap option any more (as a fish and chip shop used to be).

We had a great fish supper provided by Papas last Friday and ate it overlooking the sea. Wonderful. Lovely fresh fish, batter was perfect as we're the chips.

Ordered a take away from here Saturday evening. Took a while after ordering (10-15 mins) but due to COVID-19 didn't mind. There were several people all waiting. The staff did apologise for the wait but then said it was nice and fresh, which sounded good. The fish was OK but the chips were dry and only lukewarm and inedible. Tasted like they had been cooked for a while and dried out. Won't be going back as very disappointed.

My wife and I had a wonderful cod, chips and mushy peas dinner here on Valentine's evening.The fish was melt in the mouth delicious. All white and flaky with a lovely batter (not too heavy, not too greasy). Chips were done to perfection.The service we received was excellent and the restaurant is bright, clean and modern.My wife and I loved it and will be back for more next time we are in Folkestone.

We visited on a Friday lunch time the menu was fine and we all had what was requested. It was hot plentiful and tasty. No complaints from our group. Toilet was clean and functional. Nice lunch

Papas breakfast is absolutely lovely very good atmosphere within the restaurant pleasant people who are allways willing to help.

What a bargain....fish & chips for only £1.99p. Yeah, of course the fish is minute and not many chips...BUT.... for just a snack if you're peckish it's bob on. You struggle to buy a cup of coffee for that so value for money is 100%. Pity we didn't have a full meal but at that time we couldn't fit it in. What we had was a damn good hot snack for less than two quid.

We love treating ourselves to fish and chips. Bad news! Our local shop...Marios has closed and he is enjoying a well deserved retirement. Good News! There is now a Papas Fish and chips shop near us, by St Saviours Church, Blackbull Road. And its really good! Traditional, English fish and chips, with all the trimmings. So we can now carry on our "no cook" evenings and Mario, when he misses it all, can pop up there too.

Went back again after another visit to Folkestone and again it was a lovely dinner. Four of us served by the lovely waitress with the dark hair that seems to have been there forever. I had the plaice, and the others had the cod and nobody disappointed. The fish is fresh the batter is well made and cooked and the chips are great. As somebody that has worked in a fish and chip shop I can tell you that making a good batter and frying it properly, with fresh oil is noticeable and the batter if Papas is always good.

Back at papas been a long time nice welcome by the ladys again the restaurant was clean & tidy ordered fish & chips and as always they were brilliant well cooked good presentation the restaurant soon filled up best in Kent must go back more often

We stopped in Folkestone for the night earlier this week prior to taking the euroshuttle to France. We wanted some fish and chips for our dinner as we often do when at the seaside. We opted for Papa's as it wasn't far from our hotel. We ordered a large cod, a battered sausage and chips and shared them between our family of 5. The portions were generous and the food was super tasty and given the seal of approval from our 3 kids. Would recommend.

I was out with my cousin and his wife from Canada again and she wanted to eat English fish & chips and as Papas was handy and I had had meals from them as take away we tried the restaurant and were not disappointed. I had Haddock & chips with mushy peas, the fish was massive and I could not eat it all and not wanting to waste good food my cousin had the other half. The service was good although I did have to ask for my mushy peas which the waitress bought straight away. The wait for the dinner after our order was not excessive approx 5 - 10 minutes at a guess as I did not time it.A good experience

Visited Papas because of the good reviews but we were extremely disappointed to find the quality of the fish and chips to be well below the usual standard. We ate in, but the fish resembled a piece of supermarket bought frozen battered cod (albeit larger), and the chips were dry and rather uniformly cut, - again resembling the supermarket frozen variety, and not at all like the traditional moist chips that one finds at, say, Harry Ramsden's etc.

We had a a takeaway from Papas as was staying in a hotel nearby and just fancied fish and chips hit the spot fish was massive and really good chips. It had tables in the back and looked busy.

Papas was recommended by the wycliffe guest house and the fish & chips were delicious! The £1-99p special is a small portion just right if you're not starving!

We where passing and decided to call in for our evening meal. The restaurant is behind the takeaway and is large, roomy and light. There is an entrance through the takeaway or from the alley at the side of the Restaurant. The waitress was very helpful and very soon a plate of beautifully cooked, piping hot Haddock, Chips and mushy peas was delivered to our table. There was a good choice indicated on the menu. The meal was well presented and was very tasty. We enjoyed our visit.

Popped in on our way back north and didn’t regret the slight de-your from the Eurotunnel, the fish was so fresh and absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend. I also very stupidly left my phone and purse on the table (oops!) and the staff tried everything to get in touch with me to safely return it. Thank you!

I have always been wary of fish and chip shops as I hate cold chips, so didn't have high expectations about this one being any different. How wrong was I? I can honestly say they were the best fish and chips I have had for years. I opted for haddock and chips (with mushy peas of course as I am a Northern lass) and hubby had Skate and chips. I have never seen such a huge plate of fish and chips in my life. He was in his element I was doubtful that I would eat it all but I was wrong again. (Twice in one day is quite an admission). The minute the fish hit my taste buds it (and the rest) went down in a flash and I can't wait to return.

We can have lovely meals from here and if they were more consistent I would give an excellent score, but can only give average score because it can be hit and miss as some are unfortunately accompanied with chips that are bad / rubbery and just not edible as my photo shows (these all went in the bin) - weather being boiling the day we got these we couldn't get back to shop to return them.

Can really recommend this restaurant. We have been several times and have not been disappointed. My husband usually has the grilled fish as not so keen on batter and it is lovely. Quite a large menu not just fish. Staff lovely, friendly and efficient. Good freshly

Fast service. Lovely service from two very pleasant girls Chloe and Emily. We all had fish and chips which were all good. Good value too.

I ate both cod and had pick in two different days both times the fish was fresh , and well cooked. During the peak time ( afternoon ) I had to wait about 20 minutes but first worth it and secondly , queue means quality+great price the most of the times

Having read the reviews we were expecting to be blown away by amazing fish and chips. Bit of an anti climax. Fish batter really thin so not crispy.....tasted like a kfc coating. Chips were good however. Overall nice but not outstanding

We stopped here for cod and chips after travelling on the Eurotunnel. The fish was amazing - chunky, flaky and perfect, and topped off with great batter. The chips were also fantastic. The staff are welcoming and very friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place!

This is traditional fish and chips at its best, freshly fried or grilled and accompanied by friendly and efficient service. Batter is better than we've found anywhere; value for money first rate.

Don't know how some reviewers hate the chips. We had grilled plaice with chips and I had a gammon steak, mushes, peas and chips and both of us remarked how tasty the chips were! Perhaps we're missing out but my parents have always supported this place so they must be doing something right as it was also very busy for a Tuesday lunchtime. Enjoy it!

Have been to Papa's twice before and they have never let us down, but sadly this Saturday although we had our normal high standard of service and food, the batter was a little bit too thick for my liking. If this is all I can complain about then it still shows how good they are, maybe I am being picky but I did not enjoy my meal as much as normal. Will not stop us going there though.
