A cordial place, I think there is only one other hot pot venue in Aberdeen, this one clearly is much more cordial and welcoming. Good choices, but can do with some support regarding how to cook and indulge like a Japanese / Korean.

Seemed like a good idea to have a bowl of tasty noodles but it was disaster . Chose beef noodle soup which turned out to be bowl of tasteless greasy "stock" with some noodles and vegetables. My companion chose the seaweed noodle salad which tasted of absolutely nothing. The table was sticky and we were seated beside the window ledge which was full of cobwebs and dead flies. The whole experience was revolting. This place deserves to close and I hope it does soon. I should have known better as their sister restaurant Oryza Sushi was similarly disappointing.

Great meal, definitely not my last visit!

I don't even know where to start. First of all the whole place was grubby. The table we sat at was sticky, with crumbs etc in between the slats of wood. And from where I was sat I could see right in to kitchen which looked dirty and messy. Next the food. To drink I ordered a smoothie, I was very disappointed as they only had one flavour which I understood, when I watched her pour it from a carton. The kind you buy from the supermarket. I was charged over £2 for one glass of processed gloop. To eat , had the rice and salmon dish from their quick lunch menu. It tasted exactly as it sounds, plain rice, plain salmon and undercooked veg, not even a sauce. My partners broth tasted like water, there was no flavour to it at all. The service was awful. It took almost 45 minutes for my food to arrive. There was only one member of staff in the whole place and she looked like she had no clue what she was doing. When she actually got around to cooking my food, it took all of 10 mins. There was a group of people that came in just after us looking to by a gift voucher that were kept waiting for over half an hour for the owner to appear, because the staff member didn't even know if they did vouchers. I'm not even going to go into the impression that the owner gave when she finally turned up, I could spend another entire review just on that. It's hard to describe just how bad it really was and I don't think I'm doing it justice but needless to say, I will never be going back. It's sticky. It's dirty. The food is mediocre at best and is not worth the money. The service is so slow I would have been faster doing it myself. The staff were ditzy and unorganised with no clue what to do. Very very poor show. Seriously, words cannot describe how horrible my experience of this place was. Do Not Eat Here.

I visited here with a friend where we had a voucher to use. The place wasn't that busy with only 3 tables with people (including us). The 2 staff members seemed stressed out despite this and took a long time to serve us our food. When the food arrived I wasn't impressed at all. The sushi rice was totally gooey and as a result stuck like glue to the wooden platter. Was really hard to pick up with chopsticks. Sushi rice isn't meant to be soggy! Couldn't eat any more of it so we just left the dragon rolls. The nigiri was ok but not well presented in the slightest and just looked thrown together (ironic given that sushi is meant to be an art form all about presentation?) Even the wasabi was soggy and in a puddle of water, it was all mushy. The soup/broth was a total let down - bland with no flavour whatsoever and what the menu says is sliced scallops is really just tiny frozen ones. They should be fresh. Prawns had the shells still on - impossible to eat when part of a soup. Just bland, boiled mush and very disappointing. Couldn't eat it at all. We ordered dumplings too to try & fill ourselves up but they arrived burnt on one side. The restaurant itself didn't seem clean either and didn't really feel comfortable consuming food there. All in all, a very disappointing experience. If you want decent Japanese food stick to Yatai or Yorokobi. They are far, far superior - this place doesn't come anywhere near either of those.

We really enjoyed our Shabu-Shabu experience. We had read some mixed reviews on trip adivsor and weren't sure what to expect. It was really great though, both base broths were lovely, we had the spicy hot broth and the green thai curry. The beef and veg were excellent, chicken doesn't lend itself so well to Shabu Shabu so would avoid that next time. It was great fun to try different combinations of the sauces etc. I would advise getting some rice along side as this is great for soaking up the leftover broth. We will definately go back and think it would be a great place to go in small groups of friends.

My friend and I went along for lunch as we had a groupon voucher and have been to oryza sushi and the service was good.We were on our lunch hour during working day and from the instant we stepped in the door we were welcomed with health smells of green tea and soothing music. We like to try different cuisine and feel like we had stepped into a different world. This really does fit the bill!!!We selected the seafood platter and we received razor clams, mussels, white fish and salmon. We also had a plate of vegetables, dumplings and tofu.We got to choose upto 2 different soup bases so we chose miso soup and thai green soup so that we could experiment with the different flavours. We also chose some peanut dipping sauce to dip our tasty morsels into once they were cooked in the soup. Our voucher also included green tea.The weather was extremely cold and wet when we arrived but when we stepped into the canteen the sun came out and shone into the restaurant which felt very theraputic indeed. The only draw back was that we only had an hour to enjoy the tranquility next time we will be sure to come at the weekend so we can enjoy the time for much longer and may even take some saki with us lol!!!Can't wait to return!!!

We received a warm welcome. The food took quite a while to arrive. We ordered the hotpot for 4. Generally the soups did not really add any flavour to the various ingredients. There were also no sides etc, no rice and a very small amount of noodles, not enough for 4 people. As the hotpot for 4 is already pricey they should really throw in some rice. Essentially it's just plain boiled veg, meat and seafood. There are sauces available on the table, however these were well used and had been fingered by the kids who were in the previous group on our table. It would have been reasonable to expect fresh sauces to be provided. Glad to see a new type of restaurant in Aberdeen, a few small changes could greatly enhance the experience.

As a child we ate hotpot or steambots regularly in Asia . I have not had any for 20 years but we had some here. We chose a vegetarian /seafood option which was good. The selection was good . The service was hit and miss ... I thought it was teething problems and would be better in time. As a romantic meal, it was abysmal . We kept splashing hot soup over each other. The roughly chopped vegetables were just too big to eat as a mouthful. The staff seemed a bit stressed out although they were nice. On a cold night the restaurant steamed up the windows . The bench styled seat and table don't lend themselves well to cold freezing Aberdeen. Similar to Jamie Oliver's rustic freezing cold metal furniture ...wrong countries guys....anyways we enjoyed the experience and hope it thrives . I might go back or I might just make my own hotpots from now on,

Having had hotpot many times before, in various Asian restaurants, we were excited to see a place in Aberdeen bring the hot experience. We visited Oryza for the first time, Saturday 1tth Jan, for late lunch, without a reservation. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and had choice of seats, as only 2 other groups were seated. Everything appeared good as we were seated, but over the succeeding 60mins, we were disappointed with the Oryza and encountered far too many negatives... Cleanliness – As we sat at our wooden table, we started to notice how dirty it was, and the table next to us. There were bit if food within the gaps of table, on the table surface, and over the hotpot surface and controls. We had to ask the waitress to come and re-clean the table again, which was done, but still not very well… Service Speed – We order the hot pot for 2 people within 5mins of sitting down. After 20mins, we finally received our broth and raw food ready for cooking. That is just far to slow, especially considering there was only 2 other tables, and 1 of them already had their food served.Food Quality & Portions – The hotpot platter, came with meat (lamb), seafood and vegetables. The seafood platter included muscles, which came with the beards still attached and unwashed. I consider this a major NO NO. We were left we 4 small prawns, and 4 pieces of salmon and fish, which were about 2cm * 1cm The selection of vegetables was extremely limited. We received a big heap of beansprouts that looked far from fresh, so we pushed them onto he reject pile with the muscles. We were then left 1 sprig of broccoli and 1 of cauliflower, several beans, 2 slices of sweet potato and 2 of normal potato, and about 3 sliced mushrooms. Value For Money. We paid £29.99 for the hotpot for 2 people and I would have calculated that the cost of the food was about £3-4. Based on the small plates and the poor quality of several items, this was a complete rip off. Giving the place was not busy, having a dirty eating area and serving pieces of food unfit for consumption are unforgivable, and for that reason we would not return to this place.

The normal prices are exorbitant but thankfully we had a voucher but still I feel it was a useless expenditure for some boiled food. They serve some soup which is literally boiling water with hardly any spices and no taste, you have to boil this water and add your "frozen meat", vegetable, seafood etc to cook for few minutes and you eat it. It has absolutely no taste whatsoever and I had to add lots of different sauces to develop some taste in this hotpot that is bearable; for this you normally pay 45£. What we thought to be a romantic, nice and warm dinner turned out to be a complete disaster!!!I would categorize it as a boiled food given to patients in hospital with no taste. After such an experience I turned speechless when they ask me for 5£ for opening a beer bottle that I brought from home as they don't sever any drinks and it actual price was less that even a pound, as if they want to make money from letting people to bring in their own booze and charge them unreasonably for consuming it in their shop. I won't be surprised if this places shuts down sometime soon due to no business, if it was possible I would rate it even less than 1*. Will never think of visiting again!!

Unfortunately we were the only 2 people in the place, so there was no atmosphere and it was very cold! The waiter was very attentive and we left it up to him to choose our selection of dishes! The food was fresh, tasty and unusual - very different from a British afternoon tea, lovely flavours and very enjoyable! On the down side the table was sticky, the glasses for the tea were dirty and the wooden chopsticks had seen better days - better to provide disposable ones for each customer.

Absolutely amaaazing delightful memorable experience of japanese cooking, loved, loved, loved it. Kind, helpful staff, beautiful clean relaxed japanese ambiance. Best to go for the whole hotpot order when you are hungry, and especially good when its cold and raining outside. Also especially good for some teen-time as the hands-on experience allows time for those important but elusive teenchats! And the food is SO HEALTHY. We were a bit nervous to produce our groupon voucher (always a worry that we won't get the "real deal"), but it was happily accepted and we were treated like royalty with abundant fresh, top quality food. We were brought delicious base stocks for our personal hot plate, tiered plates of a huge variety of fresh and beautifully prepared raw meats, fish, shellfish and veg for the DIY participation (which allowed great chopstick-dexterity practice and great fun). The other good thing about Oryza hotpot I noticed is the flexibility - there was quite a mix of customers - quick business lunch workers, mums meeting, leisurely family groups and students. Thankyou Oryza for bringing this much needed little gem to the town centre.

In Aberdeen there isn't much choice when eating out but chain restaurants and they get old fast. This unique and tasty local business blows all of them out of the water.Ate here for lunch with a friend and we were given a warm wlecome as soon as we walked in and served very quickly. Our waiter was very nice. The entire concept is brilliant and so much fun! You start with a soup base and add to this as choice of vegetables, meats and fish/shellfish and noodles. There is even an extensive choice of vegetarian options. For parties that may have differening tastes or allergy concerns, you can also ask for a dual pot which gives you two soup bases in the same pan which are separated..My friend and I left very very satisfied. Will definitely be going back sometime soon and highly recommend it to those who are fed up of the tired restaurant scene in Aberdeen and want to try something new and fun.

We had a Groupon voucher for a hotpot which normally costs £39. The staff were helpful and explained to us the process as well as giving some advice about what to cook first and last. For the soup base we ordered 2 different tastes in one pot (divided by a slice in the middle) - miso and green curry. The soup was almost tastless in the very beginning (which was expected), but developed really nice flavour while we cooked meat, fish and seafood and veggies and noodles. The meat was lamb and beef, the latter was just out of a freezer - although I can't say that it had any impact on the flavour. I really liked the fish and seafood selection which we put in the pot after the meat - salmon and haddock, king prawns, large mussels and small squids, all of which were fresh as if just brought from the sea! Vegetable selection was quite good as well - broccoli, cauliflower, greens... all of which were really nice with noodles and wontons! The pot was offered with pickled minced ginger (probably with garlic), black bean sauce, chillies, sesame paste and some chopped coriander and spring onions on the side - we loved the pickle and bean sauce (even added the latter to the soup). The overall experience was good, it might be a good idea for a date to get to cook your food together.

I'm a big fan of Asian food and especially street food and have enjoyed hot pots in Vietnam - so I know how simple, easy and delicious they are! I was therefore very excited to hear Aberdeen had its very own hot pot restaurant. The beauty of a hot pot is not only in the fun element of cooking it yourself but is all about fresh ingredients and a flavoursome soup base. Sadly this was not the case here... the vegetable soup base was merely hot water that had been in the near vicinity of a stock cube - not the full flavoured broth you would expect which is also going to flavour the fresh ingredients you add in. This did not even improve after adding copious amounts of soy sauce, ground ginger, and any other condiment available on the table - the broth remained tasteless To top this off we were given bowls of FROZEN meat - and when asked about this was told this is normal and they 'always do it' .... suffice to say I did not eat this - my friend had already put the meat into her broth before I spotted it was frozen and as you would expect - it came out tough and black...when we complained it was taken off our bill and no further comment - not even when the owner came in - and we were the only customers ... now I know why!shame shame shame

I dined at Oryza Hotpot with my friend this evening for the first time; the decor & interior is lovely & very spacious. A bit of music would have been appreciated as very quiet. We shared the split broth pot (thai green & hot & spicy), they were very hot/spicy but no real flavour, I understand you add your own ingredients as I love this cuisine but it had no taste apart from hot!!! We added beef & vegetables which was nice. Our meal was very reasonably priced as we shared everything, which was more than enough but the bill came with an added £5 corkage fee which I wouldn't have minded paying but the menu stated £1 per bottle/per person-I politely queried this with the waitress/chef & she persistently told me that her hand written piece of paper told her different. It wasn't handled very well, if something is stated on a menu then it should be obliged without a confrontation. I have frequented Oryza Sushi many times & have no complaints.

It does take a bit of getting used to cooking your tea but it was good, with various results from all the different foods. It is a very different style of restaurant, if you are used to ordering and eating with no hassle don't go, but if you like a bit of food interaction do go. The staff are good and answer any questions you give them and are very helpful. I especially liked the open kitchen as you can see everything that is going on.One last thing, its BYOB, but there are plenty of choice to buy from locally or just have a smoothie, they are lovely as is the green tea.

Based on the other reviews I almost decided to give this a miss, which would have been a great mistake. Went on a Friday evening and it was quiet, but the staff were attentive polite and enthusiastic without being over the top. Used a groupon voucher without any problems or comments. The food was well presented and good quality, the meat was perhaps a little fatty but it was lamb after all, seafood and veg particularly were certainly fresh enough. I can't see the concept working very well as a take away over here, but for a sit in dinner its great. One word of warning, not very genteel so better for friends/family than first dates perhaps! There isn't or at least wasn't a license so no alcohol served, but the staff were happy to put other diners beer and wine in their chill cabinets. As for value for money I can't really comment as we had a discount voucher for the hotpot platter, it certainly outprices the TGI's or similar chains but isn't hugely expensive, certainly by Aberdeen standards.Yes as someone said you probably could do this at home, but that goes for any restaurant, so I would thoroughly recommend this place.

Chinese eating with a difference. If I were to ask the average Brit where does ‘Hot Pot’ come from the likely answer might be Lancashire. So it was news to me to find that there is whole Chinese tradition called ‘Hot Pot’.Aberdeen’s Thistle Street is the location for this different side to the traditional Chinese meal. It could be described as ‘soup based fondue’ where you cook you own vegetables, noodles, rice and whatever else is available in a pot at your table containing the soup of your choice. Do not be daunted by the thought of it taking a long time to cook or in fact worry about not knowing how to construct your ‘pot’ the menu has full instructions and tips and the staff are there to explain and help. Prepare to be surprised and your taste buds to be tantalised, it is quite simply something new.

The menu is very easy to understand. Beginner can go with the mix menu that is already set. If you prefer to choose things you like, then order from the menu. We ordered different things from the menu, it was enough and the price was cheaper then the set menu. You also get to choose the soup base you like. We went for the yuan yang pot, so we get two flavours. They were good. It's a small fancy restaurant. It is worth a try.

I had a takeaway from the special offers board which was soup or stir fried noodles and a can of juice for £5. I ordered a Kimchi Meat soup and a Seafood Stir Fry. It is the first time I have had a Stir Fry that was not a stir fry. Everything was cooked in a soup and then drained at the end before putting into a takeaway box. The soup had no flavour whatsoever and tasted fatty. All food was binned and then a trip to the chip shop to make up for a completely disgusting and underwhelming experience.

I went to Orzya Hot Pot earlier on today and both me and my girlfriend had a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. My girlfriend is Chinese, I am British. I have had homemade hot pot with some of her friends before but would class myself still a new comer to this kind of cuisine. We were greeted and asked where we would like to sit, and went to a table that looked right into the kitchen/prep area. Our waiter was friendly and we exchanged some banter on how I had hot pot with my girlfriends pals and that they had a lot to live up to!We had some drinks and looked over the menu, with our waiter explaining how it worked and what options we could go for (IE picking our broth, seasoning and separate meat/veg items – or going for a set dinner). Some of the vegetables and seasonings I had not seen before but the staff seemed pretty clued up and explained what everything was.We went for one of the set dinners that included various vegetables, seafood and meat to cook in our broth. My girlfriend being from Northern China, wanted a very hot soup and they seasoned it well for her taste and sectioned off a more tame broth for me. The platters of meat and veg were a healthy size and the mussels and prawns were particularly huge.Despite what I have read in the other reviews – all the meat/seafood and veg was fresh, I watched it being prepared next to us – and we went in fairly late after what looked like a busy shift. The mussels we had were frozen, which normally I would have found strange – but after eating Traditional Hot Pot before, this is how it is done!We were stuffed after having the noodles last, which soaked up all the flavours in the broth and greatly satisfied with the food, service and attitude of Orzya Hot Pot – we will definitely be trying the sushi restaurant next.

Was really looking forward to this new dining experience, however the reality was a real let down . First we were ignored for five minutes when we arrived then show to a table that was still to be cleared. Then we were left. No menu no drinks. Eventually when the waitress came over she looked at our groupon voucher and said "oh you're got one ofTHEM". We then discovered it was an unlicensed resturaunt - surely when I booked the table they could have brought this to our attention. The food eventually arrived and we were given a very half hearted explanation of how a hot was cooked. We had to ask for cutlery and chopsticks to eat with but then realised everyone else had ladels to scoop food from the stock, I aske the waitress and she looked at me as if I was asking for the moon and proceeded to fish the ladels from under the mountain of dirty dishes on the counter and gave it a quick was under a tap no detergent used and he handed them to me still wet!! We tried to make the best of cooking the frozen meat and meagre portion of noodles. The so called DIY sauce station had three sauces on it with no bowls to take the sauce to your table so was pretty pointless. The final straw was when another diner came to the counter asking where the toilets were so she could wash her hands and he was taken into the cooking area and allowed to wash her hands at the dish washing sink. She was then offered the cloth the girl was wiping the table with to dry her hands !!! The resturant was a bit like a school canteen with no atmosphere mediocre food, unhelpful ineffient staff who seem to have no grasp of basic hygiene regulations. Definitely wont be going back ever.

Great idea but not done well at all. Frozen meat and tired looking vegetable presented for hotpot. I have never eaten hotpot before so asked how I should do it. Very little help from eldest lady. Basically you could do this at home. You cook all your own food and get charged a fortune for it. £50 for two people for £5 worth of bland ingredients which you have to cook yourself.

An Interactive Asian food experience could be amazing in Aberdeen.... This please had all the makings of a place that could bring it to the northeast. There was no showmanship, limited interaction and what we were left with was a bowl of boiling stock and some average freeze dried meatPlus it was expensive for what you got.Consider a bit more interaction with the customer... Make it fun...think bennehanna.

I was there recently and I used to know some of the staff working there, however did not have the best experience and drinks. Too overpriced even for Aberdeen. Rude staff and bad vibe in general.

Myself and 3 others had a fantastic 1 night stay breakfast included. The room was clean fresh and spacious, the beds were extremely comfy and the shower was powerful. You don’t have to ask for a hairdryer! WiFi worked well and on more than on device for free. Breakfast was hot and fresh with plenty of options and the free costa coffee vouchers were very welcomed. Staff were friendly and helpful and I would highly recommend this place and look forward to returning.

Me and my friend play this game where you put 50 p towards charity and they won’t let us play bc they have to “clean up” but another customer comes in and orderes a drink this is disgusting they don’t even care about there own charity that helps young kids in poverty to go to school. For the stick game you put 50 p towards their charity and you have a chance to win a drink if there’s a colour on the bottom of the stick u win this cofee shop has horrible service but the workers are nice apart from if u want to play the stick game
