Quality Malay-Chinese with eclectic menu and tasty food. Best of all great service. Not cheap but a refreshing change from wall to wall carbs in the old town

Had a meal with friends. Lovely food and lots of choice. Staff were friendly and helpful. The large round tables make a meal for more than 4 people so much more enjoyable. Would definitely recommend a meal here.

The restaurant is never busy at lunchtime, which is a crying shame, but also excellent for us, as we can have a business lunch in the comfort of a quite restaurant. The service is functional, you are not talking a fine dining experience, we are walking staff who know the menu, can advise on allergies, who are effective. It may be that we are there too often, but they remember which of us can and cannot use chop sticks -- that is impressive. The food arrives quickly, it well presented, tastes as good as it looks. We are there once a month, so it must be good.

Really good food. We had 2 pints of lager a mixed meat soft noodle dish, garlic king prawns and the sizzling lamb. All dishes were great very tasty and it came to £41 all in. Recommended deffo

This used to be called The Dew Drop Inn , then The Waterfall, I suggest it is now more of a muddy puddle. Incredibly over priced, had a takeaway , it was essentially just thrown into a box, incredibly bland, and definitely not freshly cooked .

Visited this restaurant for the first time last month and enjoyed the experience, so visited again last week. Staff are very welcoming and the food was delicious. This is likely to be a regular stop when visiting Stevenage.

As always had a wonderful meal at otc Hadn’t booked a table but were seated anyway but told they needed the table back within 1.5 hours The restaurant was very quickly full so we were very grateful for the opportunity to eat without a booking As always were served by the two lovely ladies who just never stop fantastic service The food is delicious generous portions piping hot and well presented As has happened in the past while ordering was advised that what we had ordered was enough and we didn’t need anymore. And the waitress was absolutely right we had just the right amount of food she could have taken our order for more dishes and taken our money but was honest and sincere in her advice Have enjoyed this restaurant many times in the past mainly the buffet menu which is available though the week and incredible value but the main menu is very comprehensive and also good value too Thank you for a great meal

Visited for the first time after reading great reviews here. Fantastic little restaurant. Whilst the decor is no-frills, the staff and food more than make up for it. We tried to order too much food and rather than just take our money we were advised to order less, saving us at least £15. There aren't many restaurants that would do that. Would definitely go back.

I have never been to the Old Town Chinese Restaurant and will definitely come back. It's located in the South end of the High Street in Stevenage Old Town and we received a friendly welcome from the staff. They offer a variety of dishes and they also do a £23 per person deal which includes three courses and tea or coffee afterwards. The food was excellent and very tasty and there was just the right amount. the staff were really helpful and we were made to feel very special. Even though it was a Monday night there were plenty of people in the restaurant which to me showed it is good. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Got food poisoning and had to take a day off work. Overpriced also, unfortunately put me off so won't return

We have been here a few times over the last 10 months, always a good experience. This time we had the set menu, which still offers a nice selection of dishes. The staff remembered that i use chop sticks while by team mates don’t, and that i have coke without ice and they have ice, pretty amazing given the number of people they must see. The food arrived quickly, we week cooked, looked nice and tasted great. Not a lot more to say, good food snd a good price, we will go back!

Can't go wrong here - eat in or takeaway. Not a cosy venue - but lovely symmetrical space. Good service and tasty food. Whats not to like.

We went for dinner to our favourite Chinese restaurant, have been coming here for years, but this was our first eat-in meal there of 2022...we usually drive over for a good takeaway. Yes they’re not cheap, but the quality is always good and the same each time... good for leftovers the next day. The food is good as usual and the girls are happy and friendly. We came this time to have our usual buffet (£17.90) and thought, great they’ve not put up their prices due to their Covid losses, Brexit, etc, unlike a lot of our usual restaurants which we’re boycotting now for this reason! BUT I’m docking one star off as, unbeknown to us, they now charge a service charge which is added to the bill automatically.... and not actually advertised as going to be charged... I did wonder why the man at the next table was not happy and unimpressed... he told them to take off the service charge which shouldn’t be put on the bill in the first place... surely it’s OUR choice to decide if we’re going to tip for service or not?? For this reason, Old Town Chinese, you probably won’t see much of us this year (or probably other loyal customers) eating in from 1 April when the fuel bills increase by over 50%..£50 for a Chinese meal out for 2 with no alcohol is not good (I notice the price of drinks has gone up too and we didn’t even have a good alcoholic drink) 😫

Really disappointed. Nowhere near the quality it used to be plus portion sizes have shrunk considerably.

Popped in for an evening meal, had salt and chilli ribs followed by chicken kung po. Food is excellent and the portions generous. My only criticism would be that the drinks selection isn't good. A can of Carling is not really my thing

This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in my area and we come here regularly in normal times, and this was our first visit here since February 2020 and a birthday visit too .... we were not disappointed and left very happy and very full lol !!Safety: They had separated the tables out across the restaurant with lots of space between diners, there’s a bottle of anti bac on each table for our use; no table cloths or cutlery or anything else on the tables; the staff are wearing masks (although one girl took hers off and put under her chin to have a long chat with some customers she knows well, so that wasn’t good practice); we had to offer our contact details to them (they didn’t automatically come over and take our details ... they only take your first name (no surname) and mobile number... not sure if more info should be taken off us??).....but all in all... it was well run. Food: we always go there to have their Buffet for £17.90 per person. Good value for money as the choice of food is great and large, and the food is cooked quickly but tastes sooooo good. We were not disappointed with our food last night and it tasted so much better as we’ve not had Chinese since February. I WOULD RECOMMEND EATING HERE

a last minute visit on christmas eve - no room at several inns.. thankfully a table was found and hungry children enjoyed a very tasty mix of various chinese dishes. friendly service even under pressure - generous portions - quite expensive but very nice.

We travel from Hitchin to get our takeaway from The Old Town Chinese because we haven't found a consistently good Chinese locally. It is worth the effort! We have had a takeaway from here a few times now and each time the food has been hot and tasty. The staff are so friendly and the food ready on time for us to collect. We cannot fault the food or service.

Really friendly and quick service too. The interior of the restaurant looks fairly basic but is clean and tidy. The mixed plate of starters were excellent and so were the mains.....good size portions too.

Usual fare whilst away with work curry one night then look for somewhere else. To echo some of the other reviews a little pricey but very good Chinese food. The menu has an excellent selection so much so we couldn’t decide what to have and ended with the set menu B. Plenty of variety and good portions, as a recommendation this is becoming a go too if we’re in the area.

Booked this Chinese last minute. Nearly turned away as looked a bit basic. However, good reviews made us go in. Food was very good but a bit pricey for what it was. Bill for Two nearly £70 with tip, compared to a bill of approximately £50 to £69 in spice rouge opposite.

We dined here last week. The food was well cooked and the portion sizes were adequate. It was fairly quiet and the service was very good with pleasant waitresses.It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for, with good quality produce used.

Been going here with my wife for many years now. Always good food, friendly staff. We go for the gourmet blow out menu which you pick from a large selection of dishes what you want, then order more if your still hungry. It’s available Sunday to Thursday. The courses come out quickly so generally no long waits.

Nicely decorated, lots of empty tables. Had business lunch, very poor, tough meat lots of rice but not much of main meal apart from rice. Not good value.

Started with the prawn wonton but they were a bit of a let down to be honest. The crispy duck made up for this, it was really delicious with plenty of pancakes. For main course I had the Kung Po chicken with some fried noodles and beansprouts which was good also. Would certainly return here. Best Chinese restaurant I've found in Stevenage.

Amazing find last night we went for the all you can eat choice. Did not scrimp on portion size. Food tasty, non greasy and all freshly prepared. Every dish we had was amazing especially the crispy wantons and crispy duck and lamb and the kung pau chicken. Friendly staff too. Definitely will be coming back soon.

A firm favourite with excellent food and service. A mid week trip to Stevenage for food and drinks at the Old Town Chinese. We like the warm welcome from the staff. We try to vary our selection of food, but the crispy duck is always a regular course for us.

First visit in 2 years, after terrible meal last time. New people, new menu. Back to being really good again so will be back soon 😀

Came here for partners birthday, with family who haven’t been here. The service was excellent, the staff very friendly, and all our party were very happy with the food, and already want to come back. The prices are not over the top, but make sure you book as it gets very busy at the weekend & they don’t have a lot of tables. Already planning to come back.

We go to this Chinese on a regular basis. The food is great and the staff are really nice people. The bill is reasonable. This was one of the first places i took my girlfriend when I met her, 3 years later we still go back and they do their best to give us the same table.

Having seen so many great reviews online, thought we’d give it a try - so glad we did!

We have visited this restaurant on many occasions for their (previously) good value lunch. However a visit on a cold day left us totally underwhelmed. The restaurant was freezing inside (the member of staff who serves was shivering) so hardly a warm welcome. The food continues to be OK though the meat content of the dishes has been reduced. Most disappointingly prices have risen by over 10%. Our monthly visits have therefore come to an end.

We turned up without a booking and were welcomed and a table found for us even though they were very busy. The meal was delicious even though the service was a little slow due to the high number of diners. The staff were friendly and apologetic for the wait. Would definitely recommend.

Visited whilst staying locally - I had an unfortunate experience - but due to my dietry requirements. I have been vegetarian for 20 + years, and having bad experiences in the past with Thai/Chinese restaurants I made it clear that I could not eat meat or fish. My dinner must have included fish stock as I spent the rest of the night through to the following day on the toilet. I have to say though the food did taste good whilst I was eating it.

We visited Stevenage to see my friend and we planned our dinner at 'old town Chinese restaurant'. But they disappointed us. We waited a long time for the food and they were very slow. We couldn't enjoy our dinner. We won't come back.

Staying in Stevenage for work, fancied a Chinese - this one had a really good rating - it didn’t live up to it - MSG city - although I had soup, squid, prawns and noddles I felt very bloated afterwards. Decor is basic, feels like an all you can eat buffet restaurant ..

Chinese is our favourite takeaway meal, so it’s fair to say we eat it a lot.

Visited on Saturday with our two children. Friendly service. Food was really tasty, although perhaps a little on the expensive side. They brought out an extra bowl of rice when we realised we needed more, which came quickly.

The Old Town seem to be taken over by Turkish and Indian restaurants - this is now the only Chinese left in the High Street. It's good - quality ingredients cooked well - just under £15 per head for as much as you like - we struggled to order any extra free dishes.

If you enjoy your chinese food hot and fresh this is a must visit. On a budget? Set menu £15.90 each for that you can choose 2 appetisers each, a mid course of duck or lamb, 2 dishes each from main menu. If you can get through all of that you can choose additional dishes. We have visited many times leaving full without the need to order extra. Portions are small, hot and fresh so no waste which personally I think is fab. Service is friendly you will delight them If you try chop sticks! Ideal treat for mid week set menu is not available Fridays and Saturdays.

I had never been here before and it doesn’t look great from the outside but the service was good and the food was excellent - will defiantly go back.

We arrived at 7pm on father's Day for our meal. The restaurant was fairly busy so we were glad we had booked. We sat down at 7pm and no one came to take our order..it took the staff several prompts and 40 mins to eventually take our food order. We then waited over 90 mins for our food to arrive.The restaurant seemed to prioritise take aways over the customers in the restaurant. So on the whole the food great but only if you don't mind waiting forever.....

My friend and I went here on Saturday night there weren't many people in the restaurant so service was very good. We had the set meal a which was £18.90 each. The food was very nice and because we don't like prawns ,so they gave us extra ribs which was good. This was a good value meal for two. The starter sharing platter was tasty. Crispy duck was was good. The mains were sticky chicken ,sizzling beef and a veg dish. Some of the food had alittle bit of spice but not too much as i don't like spice.Overall the food was good and just the right amount for two.

Got in at 18:30 table was reserved for 6 people. Took over 30 mins to take order. Was not advised that service was slow. Tables seated after us was served first. Takeaway orders took preference over seated guests.

Reasonable enough restaurant in Stevenage. Takes quite a while to be served sometimes, but the food is good. Good for if you are not in a rush.

We popped in and managed to get a table on a Saturday evening without a reservation (it was pretty early) we were informed we could only have the table for 1 hour but that was fine with us.

Food was great, but the service was very slow. We had to wait for 45 minutes for our orders. This would not deter me visiting again.

We came here with friends for their Chinese New Year special menu along with music which I must admit I didn’t really fancy.

Booked a table over two weeks ago for Valentines on the basis that a set menu wasn't being offered. Confirmed this on the phone that the 'normal' menu would be in place. Arrived last night only to be handed an overpriced, uninspired and unimaginative set menu and decided to leave as they could not honour what we believed we had booked. Shame because the food is good here but refuse to be treated like a teenager on a first date.

Had a lovely family meal on Sunday food is top standard and the staff there excellent. Would highly recommend you won't be disappointed . We had the buffet style menu the food was excellent loads of choice and good value.

A fairly average Chinese restaurant in Stevenage oldtown where you're already spoilt for choice with too many restaurants.

My husband and I will not get a Chinese from anywhere else in Stevenage. Fresh, tasty non greasy food no matter what you order and special of duck spring rolls are amazing.

In my opinion this is the best Chinese Restaurant in Stevenage. Always get good service and even though quality went down a couple of years ago they have really got their act together again.

Questioning chickens' motives aside, we keep returning and the food is lovely, but one dish stands out, the tea smoked chicken. It is excellent. Weekday evenings there is a set menu that is excellent value for money. If only the above was more friendly this review would be 5 star, the service isn't bad it just isn't great.

It never disappoints, open late, whether takeaways or eating in, prices are fair, and a great range of dishes.

Picked this place as it ranked high on Tripadviser. First impression on walking in was disappointing as it looked a little like a canteen. Could do with using tablecloths, however the food did the talking here. Very enjoyable evening service a little slow but it was packed so a little expected. Will be a regular from now on.

Firstly I should say that my wife is Chinese. This makes Chinese restaurants a tough gig, as her own cooking is both traditional and exceptional. This review is not meant to sound in any way snobbish, I can only tell you my experience. This restaurant does Western Chinese so everything is sweet and sickly, covered in some inexplicable sticky sauce, I've never had anything like it in my years of visiting mainland China. That said, if you're British and looking for a decent "Chinese" then you likely won't be disappointed. All your usual favourites: crispy duck, Kung Po chicken, nothing stand out or unusual at all. Best in the area? I couldn't tell you. But if you've been to China or experienced actual Chinese food, forget it. Go to My Old Place. I can't recommend it

First time here. Visited on a Saturday evenining, fairly early. Spacious square restaurant with lots of hard surfaces and little sound absorbent qualities. Very clean. Extensive menu including some other Asian dishes than Chinese. Atmosphere very relaxed and pleasant. Service very good, very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We settled for one of the set meals as choosing individual items from the menu could have taken all evening!. The cripy duck was very good and the mixed platter for starters was fine. Unfortunately the main dishes were not to our taste being exceedingly sweet, sticky and lacking in vegetables. What I enjoy in particular about Chinese restaurant food are the significant amout of vegetables with a good deal of bite to them all in a not too gooey sauce. This restaurant failed to achieve this. Having said that, the food may well be to the taste of others, and the virtues of the restaurant still managed to make earing there qute enjoyable.Obviously this reastaurant is quite popular as it soon filled up and became very busy, but the service was spot on all the time.

Excellent value for money. Fresh food freshly cooked. Great place to celebrate an occasion. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return soon.

Visited here after reading the reviews and getting a bit bored of our usual Chinese in Bishops Stortford. Although this was a bit further afield than we would have liked I am so pleased we made the effort to give it a go. We were a party of 4 and every one of us really enjoyed our food. My first impression when we got there was that it looked a bit like a café but the inside grew on me although if I had not read the reviews and I was just walking by I would not have thought "I'd like to try it in there"! Never judge a book by it's cover! For appetisers we had, mixed platter and other separate dishes, seaweed was the best I have tasted, and I tried for the first time the tea smoked chicken which was absolutely delicious and I don't normally try different dishes and stick to what I know. The only reason I tried it was because there was a picture of it on the menu and I have to say it tasted even better than it looked. The Singapore noodles and shredded chilli beef also the best I have tasted. This is my new favourite restaurant. The duck was cooked to perfection and I cant remember all the dishes my partner and friends had but they were all enjoyed. The service was friendly and because we ordered so much food we were moved to a bigger table with no problem whatsoever. I would highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait to return. 10/10

Had a great Chinese meal in this restaurant, but not many other customers. No real idea why, as the meal was superb. I was with some colleagues and everyone was pleased with their meals. And I would go there again.

Our friend, that came with me and my family, grew up in China. She commented was that it was the best Chinese food she had tasted since leaving China 25 years ago.For me, the crispy Peking Duck was excellent as we're all the other dishes that we enjoyed from the set price menu. My wife and I regularly had Chinese food in London, Soho, but now we can enjoy a better quality meal in Stevenage.
