Old Keswickian in Allerdale

We usually just get a takeaway from here but this time we’d just finished a walk in the pouring rain en route to Keswick and were ready for a sit down lunch. The food was delicious, as usual. The fish was on the thin side but the taste and the crispness of the chips made up for this. We would definitely recommend using the restaurant.

Fantastic fish and chips. Good sized portions and crispy batter…even by the time we got back to our hotel. Friendly staff.

Yes there was an enormous queue, must have waited at leat 30 minutes to place order, which did take the edge off our appetites a little. However, the fish and chips was very tasty and the service very good.

We had very nice fish, chips and mushy peas in the upstairs restaurant. Large windows, so airy. Would go again. Take away available to and there is a downstairs part of the restaurant but this was not open when we visited.

Very nice chippy restaurant and very reasonably priced. We wouldn't hesitate calling in next time we are in the area.

This fish and chip shop is ovver priced for what you get a much better price fish and chip shop is The kingfisher just 100m down the street just passed The Bank Tavern

We sat upstairs in a beautifully laid-out, socially distanced restaurant. I opted for the mozzarella sticks with some chips, and my partner had plaice and chips (reasonably priced at £8.50). Our waitress was very chatty and we discussed vegetarian options whilst eating out, to which I praised the options at the establishment. Great food with good portion sizes.

Had lovely fish and chips with mushy peas. Very busy for takeaway and no indication that you could bypass the queue to enter the restaurant. 🤦🏻‍♀️ once inside staff were very pleasant and helpful. Definitely worth a visit

This is a fabulous traditional chippy. Just what you need to refuel after a days walking. The staff are helpful and the choices cover all your basic requirements with fish, pie, and sausage meal options.

I went here twice. Smoked sausage (must be a local thing?) and chips everytime. Portion size was just right, and they taste delicious. Like being at the seaside chips. The packaging keeps everything warm until you can get to Derwent water and can enjoy a waterside view. Queues were relatively short, bearing in mind Covid and that Keswick can be quite busyDefinitely worth at least one visit whilst in Kwswick. Makes you feel like you are on holiday!

Don’t know if we got a bad day as most reviews say the fish and chips were great but 5 of us had fish and chips to takeaway and all said it was greasy and would definitely not return. As previously mentioned staff seem to have an attitude and are not very welcoming.Surly there is a better fish and chip shop to this in Keswick.

Quick service and my fish and chips was lovely and reasonably priced, Hubby had Scampi but only got 6 pieces for £4.15 which i thought was a bit stingy! But overall it was lovely and we sat and ate it alongside the river in the Memorial Gardens.

Gorgeous fish and chips. Well worth the wait - long queues at peak times. Covid safety measures in place. You go in to place your order then wait outside the shop til your order is prepared.

Keswick on a Saturday early evening - pubs were full, food opportunities limited. I decided to give this restaurant a try and I'm glad that I did.Firstly, we were greeted pleasantly, told there would be a two minute wait (accurate) and then are order was taken. The fish and chips was simply delicious, I scoffed the lot and my wife (who's on a diet) nearly did the same. My granddaughter was happy with her kid's meal and for once in her life kept reasonably quiet.But it was the service that was outstanding. All done by one woman, she ran 'front of house' with vigour and professionalism whilst being unfailingly happy and polite. I would say that was a stellar performance, so step forward and take a bow Lucy, because you are simply the best!

Food was fresh, plentiful and served in a timely manner to a group of 7 over two tables. Staff helpful and friendly and absolutely nothing to complain about.

Excellent quality fish and chips with good mushy peas. Food prepared freshly so a five minute wait. We ate ours down in the park by the mini golf course. Reasonably priced.

Food was ok, but staff not happy.I asked for sausage and chips twice and the reply was yeah, .No please or Thank you, no anything else.Wont be visiting again.Sad really as thought having customers after such a difficult 15 months would make businesses happy

Long queues due to a bad system whereby only 3 customers can go in the takeaway to order but then don’t go outside to wait for food meaning no one else can order. Was also told they couldn’t do a battered sausage which is surprising for a fish and chip shop! Sausage and chips were nice but service could definitely be improved with a better system.

Every time we come here the service is very slow! The food is ok but not fantastic. Today, as I was waiting for my food I went to use the toilet and was told I could only do so if I was eating my chips inside!!! I’d just spent £22 and wasn’t allowed to use the toilet! I find this rule ridiculous. One young girl working there then said to the other employee that she felt bad that paying customers couldn’t use the toilet to which the young girl replied ‘I don’t care!’ and started laughing. I found this very rude and very poor customer service. We use the chip shop regularly but won’t go again due to rude staff and a ridiculous rule about customers not being able to use the toilet!

We had a queue for a while which was fine due to current circumstances, place my order and when the guy went to sort my food i friendly pointed out I asked for a large battered sausage, which he was fine about saying it will be a couple of minutes, no problem I said, but then when he as the fryer to do one I could see him mutter under his breath “For F**** Sake!” Not a good impression to give customers!!!Apart from that the food was spot on just a shame the one staff member acted as he did do

Cod and chips, with lots of salt and vinegar, fresh, generous portions, not greasy, hit the spot after a long day walking in the hills

We have been regular visitors to Keswick for over 50 years. The food has been consistently good at the Keswickian. We visited again today, and were served by a charming and polite young lady. We will return!

I went in for some afternoon dinner, the girl behind the counter looked like she didn’t want to be there and was blunt when taking my order and huffed when I asked for a different drink than which I’d ordered. She then might as well throw the food onto the counter instead of passing it me. However the food was nice and would go again, just a shame about the customer service

Delicious fish and chips in a friendly restaurant. We booked a table thinking it would be busy, but actually there were plenty of tables - which was surprising because the fish and chips were delicious and we received great service. It’s a simple, honest place and I’d recommend a visit!

I have never experienced customer service like this before. The staff are absolute horrible and none of them are polite or helpful. You seriously need to train your staff in how to be polite and helpful.

The fish and chips are okay, but no better than the other fish and chip shops in Keswick. Really poor customer service. Upon finding out they don't take card, I had to find an operating cash machine and returned 10 minutes later to a grouchy chef, complaining I was too long. Just as good food for better value elsewhere. From a Cumbria local.

Stopped by upstairs for lunch on a rainy day and they could fortunately accommodate our party of 6 over 2 adjacent tables. Food was good quality and reasonably priced with child’s portions available of most dishes. When our 2 year old had a tantrum upon seeing his siblings full size hot chocolate our server very sweetly brought him a mini one in a more toddler friendly cup! Would recommend for families looking for a sit down meal as many places have reduced capacity it can be difficult to find a table.

Had some fish and chips from here. Very tasty, good service and well packed for taking away. I recommend highly.

Popped in for lunch in the upstairs restaurant. The best fish and chips we’ve had.p in a while. Great crispy batter and tasty chips which were at least double fried. So good that we had a takeaway chips with great curry sauce the following day. Highly recommended.

We eat at The Old Keswickian whenever we are in the Lakes and I can honestly say it's the best fish and chips I have ever had. It's always easy to get a table (upstairs is better) and the service is quick. I don't know how they make the batter but it is wonderfully light and crispy. Love this place !

We visited the Old Keswickian Fish & Chip Restaurant for an evening meal whilst staying in Keswick. Having not booked a table and many other places looking busy on a Saturday night, it was nice to arrive and find space immediately available.The food and local beers we ordered were very pleasant and arrived quickly. All very reasonably priced.The only piece of criticism I can offer is that during our visit a group of ten adults arrived and were seated across two tables of six and four next to each other. Which, in the current Covid-19 climate may have been slightly bending the rules.

Called in for fish & chips and pie & chips.Not particularly welcoming, person who served us came across with a bit of attitude. Asked for salt & vinegar, which was not put on, so I had to return five minutes later and he just put them on the counter and walked away.Pie was dry and expensive at £12.

Lovely oak beamed restaurant, polite and friendly service , locally roasted and ground coffee and super tasty fish and chips at sensible money. Worthy of Whitby 😎

I send my son in for a portion of chips with cheese for his dinner ,comes out with what I can only say is small chips with a total lack of cheese,totally shocking and we will not return ,even dick Turpin wore a mask !!!!!

We visited this restaurant on Sunday, we ordered fish and chips. It was really delicious. I particularly liked the chips, they were really good!! Would recommend!!

No experience of Keswick is complete without a visit to the Old Keswickian for take away fish and chips. Notwithstanding the new queuing arrangements the food is worth the wait. Warm and friendly staff, great food and reasonably priced.

Found this place on the first night of our stay in Keswick, quite a que outside for food so choose the inside dinning. Good quality food was served, the waitresses were polite and very good, would recommend

This was the first time we’ve used the Old Keswickian and it certainly won’t be the last. The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips were delicious! The portions were a good size and the service friendly. We’ll be back!

We used this venue, both as a take away and as a sit in restaurant. I would recommend both, particularly the restaurant, clean and bright with a good choice of menu items. Good portions, fair price, friendly staff.

This plaice is the best. Staff are great, friendly and helpful. And the food is sublime, truly delicious, hot, fresh and well presented. Dont miss this if in town, its right in the centre.

Tanto el pastel como las patatas fritas estaban secas y casi incomibles, obviamente se habían cocinado antes y se habían mantenido calientes durante más de unos minutos.Yo no voy a volver.

I have been to the Old Keswickian many times and have never been disappointed. Service is always very quick and the food is delicious, with good portion sizes. Staff are always very friendly and on a recent visit were very helpful and accommodating when one of our group had a dietary requirement, providing a meal that worked around these. A great filling meal after a long walk on the fells.

Often come here for lunch and the food did not disappoint, service was very quick and prices reasonable. However it appears that social distancing is not a thing here. Most tables were occupied which meant people being less than a metre apart in places.

I’ve used another fish n chippy for the last few years but was a bit unimpressed with my last take out .. plus it was quite pricey... so decided to try this place yesterday. Very briefly, if was very good. Beautiful big piece of fish, freshly cooked. The chips were “ok” as they had been clearly cooked a bit ago. But nevertheless they were just on the right side of ok. Overall, it was pretty good so I think I’ll use this place next time .. and a good bit cheaper than the previous chippy I used.

Había un mínimo de 5 para gastar tanto en efectivo como en tarjeta, por lo que tenía que obtener más de una opción. Ubicado en el centro y siempre ocupado.

Well worth a visit , can get busy at popular times. Friendly staff and food is worth the wait. Set in the centre of Keswick so it is easy to get to from any of the carparks. Just what you want after a long walk.

Simply the best chips in town! Nice to take away and the restaurant is also good! Be careful as they are so popular you could queue for a while.

It was clear to see the ladies serving/waiting were busy & tired but they didn't once reflect this in their service and mannerisms towards us. The food came quick despite such an extensive menu & busy restaurant and all food was delicious. So friendly & would definitely return.

Wherever we go we have to have fish n chips tried here last week while in the lakes there was a queue for the take away but we wanted to eat inside so went straight in no queuing! filled in track and trace staff were very welcoming and friendly,service great and most of all the fish n chips were beautiful tasty and hot,n would highly recommend, and will definitely be back in the Autumn, thanks guys.

I have visited Keswick in over 22 years, but decided to go for a day out from Merseyside. We decided to re visit the Old Keswickian chippy for our tea as I remembered that it used to be fantastic.I was not disappointed, four of us had fish, chips and mushy peas to go and I still say that it is in the top two chippy's in the UK with Hadleys fish restaurant in Whitby.Not overpriced, food was excellent and plenty of it. 10/10

They make the best fish and chips in Keswick. We will go again. It was just a short walk from our accommodation.

By far the best fish and chips we've ever had. Beautiful white fish and crisy chips. Not a bad price at all considering the quality. Will definetly put a trip here on the list for our next Keswick trip.

The food was just ok which, for the price, wasn't really worth it. We wouldn't hurry back. The scampi was freshly cooked so crispy and hot. The staff were friendly and maintained all social distancing in the take away.

Is your in for some fish and chips you will not be disappointed. My wife and myself were turned in to this place by a local couple we met in Whitehaven telling us the fish and chips where the beat around. Well we agree. Some the best I have had since living in the U.K.

Had lunch in the upstairs restaurant on Wednesday, fantastic! We were greeted by a friendly waitress wearing a mask who directed us to our table, prior to disinfecting our hands. Fish and Chips were lovely, service was quick and efficient. In regards to the previous reviews, my friend and I saw no problems with the distancing between tables, customers and staff and would be happy to come back again! Carry on the good work guys!!

TERRIBLE , Food , Terrible Safety , Staff probably saying what they have been told to say , Been here several times ,but today the fish was cooked but the batter was still wet and nasty , upon showing the staff , they couldnt care less , The seating was about 600mm apart not 2mtr ,when a family behind us left ,THE TABLE WAS NOT WIPED DOWN and sanitsed , There was only one staircase to get in or out of the place ,so people were crowded round the bottom or top of stairs so NO social distancing here either , IF you value your or your familys safety during this pandemic , i would give this place a MISS

Seven adults and two children dined here due to this place having been highly recommended by a friend. We were hopeful of a good meal when we saw the sign in the window proclaiming 'The top fish and chip shop in Cumbria', but oh dear it really did not meet our expectations, or this boast. We climbed the long flight of steep stairs up to the restaurant, and the place was very busy, which we took to be a good sign. All of the staff were wearing masks and there was hand sanitiser - yet another good sign. Due to the size of the party we had to be split up into three separate tables in different parts of the restaurant, but this was not a problem. What was a problem however was that this restaurant does not take much notice of social distancing, with tables far too close, and customers from different parties almost touching each other. It seriously gave us the impression that the management was trying to make up for lost time and revenue. We were lucky that our tables were not too badly positioned, and we managed to keep our distance from other customers, but this was quite difficult and maybe we should have found somewhere else to eat. I guess the promise of a superb meal tainted our sensibilities to the extent that we slightly ignored the closeness of the customers. All of our orders were taken quite quickly be the same waitress, but she had to come back at different times to each of the tables to confirm the order from that table - not a very good impression, but we took little notice of this, and found it quite amusing that she had written down all of the orders, but didn't get any of the three tables right. Our food was soon brought out, and we got tucked in. Now I'm not particularly fussy, but at the conclusion of the meal I did not feel that this place lived up to the sign in the window or the good reviews it got on TripAdvisor. My meat and potato pie was not too warm, and to be truthful a bit of a soggy mess. The chips weren't too bad but there was too many scrappy bits for my liking, and some of the other adults in the party agreed with this. Everyone that had the fish told me that it was not bad, but a tad greasy. All in all it was not the meal that we expected, and sorry to say but we wouldn't eat here again.

Couldn’t really fault this chippy. We where visiting Keswick for my friends birthday and just stumbled upon this place for food, didn’t need to book so we could just walk straight up. The food was lovely, the fruity curry was out of this world and the gravy was so rich like proper gravy!! Only downside was due to the size of the cafe and how close they had parties sat by each other, We where one of the first parties to sit down in the side we where on buttons by the time we had finished we had two big parties sat in close proximity to us. But other than that it was a great meal!

When we arrived in Keswick on the Saturday, the queues were literally across the road - had to be a good sign. The TA reviews were great so we opted for a mid-week takeaway, we were not disappointed. Super light batter on the fish, crunchy coating on the scampi and delicious chunky chips. Very reasonably priced and great friendly service. If you can, pop in for a terrific, tasty takeaway.

We Called in here to eat initially for take away but noticed the restaurant was open so tried for a table in there instead. We were seated straight away and ordered fairly quickly. Staff were friendly and efficient. Restaurant was clean and tables big. Food was hot and tasty and arrived quickly. We were too full for pudding. We were so impressed with the service and food that we called again to eat during our 4 night stay. The second visit was just as good as the first with different staff. We look forward to eating here again when we visit Keswick next time.

I decided to visit the restaurant part of The Old Keswickian as I wanted a cheap and reasonable meal as the reviews on Tripadvisor have been generally good.( The restaurant is up the stairs from the fish and chip shop). Looking through the options, which are all under £ 10, I decided on a cheeseburger and chips. For £ 6.10, this was very good value and while not the most memorable I've ever had, I received a lot for my money and the beefburger was thick and well topped with cheese and the chips mostly grease free. One gripe I did have was the size of the coffee, this was in a small cup and a bit overpriced, at £ 2.50.Other reasons, apart from price to visit The Old Keswickian, are the ambience and polite staff. The restaurant is a low beamed 19th century room with drawings of the lakes and black and white photos of Keswick from 100 years ago. Also the waitress was very polite and helpful and the service good. I will return and maybe try some of the fish based meals as these seem good value.

Have been going to this takeway/restaurant for many years. We have always looked forward to our biannual returns but two takeaways for the family this week were disappointing. I did wonder whether ownership had changed?

Unbeatable price for a wonderful meal. The batter was perfect, the fish was fresh, the portions were manageable and the mushy peas were simple and delicious! I would say that it's comparable with fish adn chip restaurant in Scarborough and Whitby. There's a takeaway downstairs and seating upstairs.

We ate inside upstairs. The fish was ok but the chips & curry sauce were not nice at all and the vinegar in the bottles on the table tasted of nothing, unfortunately a disappointing lunch.

It is rare to find this place without a queue out of the door, maybe because the weather was'nt good. These are great fish and chips, plenty of chips (almost too many) and the fish was done pefectly. A real treat on a Friday.

We tried the restaurant on Monday lunch and were not impressed.The only fish on the menu was fish of the day. On Monday this was cod which was OK by me but not for my wife as she prefers haddock.I'm not sure whether or not the fish of the day changes as I noticed that there was no haddock on the chippie menu downstairs.This is all contra to the menu on their website which lists haddock, cod and plaice and at a much lower price than the current offerings!!!The chips were very poor... far too hard & my wife left most of hers.

Not a good experience. Perhaps my experience of good fish and chips is particularly good but cannot see how anyone would find those I had pleasurable. Won't bother again. Chips awful and the fish all batter.

As usual we went for breakfast as soon as we arrived in Keswick. Brilliant as ever. We'll keep going every time we visit Keswick.

When we holiday in the lakes we make a point of visiting The Old Keswickian. This has to be one of the best chippies in the Lake District. We always have our fish and chips to take away and have never been disapointed with what we have had. Would reccommend to anyone

Been to Keswick dozens of times and have tried most places to eat. The Keswickian is ideally placed in the centre, the food is freshly cooked and you can eat in or take away.

Returning from a walk we could not resist trying the food. A great decision as the chips were quickly devoured and it was evident that the Old Keswickian's reputation was well deserved. A must visit when you return from your walk.
