If you find yourself in Cambridge, check this place out.... Very under rated!!! There is a lot of space but recommended to book ahead for larger groups 😉 Please blame the wine for the lack /quality of food in the photos. Starter - crab mayonnaise. Simple but beautiful I had the haddock which also had prawns, dill and crayfish in an incredibly creamy sauce ( I'd cut it all up before remembering to take a photo) - this dish was STUNNING. I would definitely get it again. But the winner of the evening was the Cambridge burnt cream dessert. 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Oh my God, I would have bought a pint of it if I could, goooorgeous. Bear in mind the menu on the website is a lot less than what they can offer on the day as many of their dishes change daily

A really lovely characterful restaurant, with wonderful busy kitchen and friendly staff. Great atmosphere. The food was delicious with generous portions and side dishes of vegetables. Excellent traditional English fare, well worth visiting!

Birthday treat for my partner. Food good, as per normal, however the service was appalling. I really dislike sitting with the detritus of a finished meal in front of me. On an adjacent table the main courses were bought in without the table having being cleared. I also had to seek out the waiter to chase up my glass of wine. If this had been our first visit I doubt we would consider the venue for a return visit.

Recommended by a previous visitor to the accommodation we were staying in at Ely. We weren't disappointed. We took the precaution of booking and whilst not full the place was busy, with a lovely atmosphere. Friendly and efficient waitress with high quality food and drink. Lovely evening.

We had tomato/onion soup and mushroom with Stilton as starters... both were excellent. For mains we had the ham with baked potato and pork loin. Again both were top notch. For dessert we had dark chocolate mousse and a fruit meringue. Wonderful. All in all an excellent meal in a very pleasant (if a little rustic) atmosphere all served by very polite and helpful staff.

Our first time here for a Saturday lunch - a beautiful building with artworks upstairs. The restaurant seems to be shared between 3 dining rooms - we were in one with 2 tables for two and a large party of 10. We chose a nice table in a bay window overlooking the garden. It would have been nice if someone had been front of house, as we were standing like lemons for some considerable time, as were another couple behind us. I had to go in search of someone. Having said this, our waitress was really lovely - poor woman was rushed off her feet all through service - she appeared to be the only server! We started with a drink - a rose Adnams Prosecco for me, a pint of beer for my husband - drinks took quite a while to materialise, and our order wasn't taken very quickly, either. I have to mention the gorgeous bread and good butter on the table - absolutely delicious! We decided to forego a starter, so waited too long for our mains - why do restaurants do this? however, the food was very good - I chose seabass fillet - a good portion, with crayfish and dill sauce, Hasselback potatoes and well presented dish of veg - leeks, mashed swede and cauliflower florets - all well cooked and full of flavour. My husband has the veggie option - broccoli and mushroom lasagne - eclectically served with a jacket potato and a baked half avocado. But he said it was very good. Another positive about this place is no service on the bill. The main problem was that it was just so cold in the room - a small heater had been installed near the large party, but where we were seated was shivery. Well, a nice experience all in all - if you like this "old school" set up, it is for you - certainly, food good and generous portions.

Wonderful first experience at The Old Fire Engine House. Food was delicious, personable & helpful service, cosy family atmosphere. Recommend you make a reservation as they are often fully booked. Starters & desserts are priced around £10 each. Main meals are priced around £21 per dish. Large servings with a good variety of options. Good wine selection. Local parking options available a short walk from the restaurant, limited on street parking available directly outside. Will definitely be back!

We were recommended this restaurant and it has taken us some time to finally get here. The building is historic and well maintained, bare floor boards add to the character but do little to dampen the background noise from a full restaurant. The food is traditionally English, in season and well cooked and presented. You have a choice between a 2/3 fixed price menu (3 choices for each course) and an A la Carte I had tomato and onion soup, a great dish, along with Sea Bass, with prawns, hasselback potatoes, whilst my partner had haddock with a dill and cream sauce, followed by rice pudding with maple apples (brilliant). So why 4 rather than 5 stars, the service, was friendly but the one server was rushed, covering the whole restaurant (it appeared which had a number of different rooms). A couple of time things were promised , water, which never appeared, a wine list arriving 15 or so minutes later long pauses between courses, with empty plates. We felt sorry for the waitress.

After sales service is not normally a concept associated with restaurants. However, in my case, I would like to focus upon the excellent way they helped me. Foolishly I left my mobile phone in the restaurant at around 10.15pm. By 10.30 pm, they had taken the care and initiative, to ring my landlines to say " We have found your phone. You can collect tomorrow from the office ". I arrived at 8.30am the following morning, was greeted most helpfully, and my phone was returned. Splendid service indeed. They do care.

Very disappointed. Service was friendly but very slow. Main course took over 1 hour to arrive despite there being one other couple in the room. They came in after us and got served before us. No explanantion or apology from the staff. Food was OK at best. My duck was overcooked, I was not asked how I would like it, which is the usual practice. We were never offered more drinks or dessert. Always wanted to eat here. So booked a university reunion meal several months ago for yesterday at lunch time. The staff were very understanding when our group number got reduced from 10 to 8 at the beginning of the week, and then finally to 6 diners due to train strike. No booking deposit was required to secure our table. Really good home cooking, the crab starter was thoroughly enjoyed by those who chose it. We were delighted they offered us seconds of the main course but only one diner took up this offer whilst the rest of us saved ourselves for dessert. The dishes may have been a couple £ dearer than most places (£21.50 for mains, £8.80 for starters & desserts) but we were not rushed and overall we had a lovely experience. My husband and I would definitely come again. I can't speak on behalf of the other diners as they came from afar.

Managed to Book an early table at short notice. We’ve been in Cambridgeshire for 37 years now and have always wanted to try this restaurant, I wish we had tried it before. Lovely experience, lovely food, not mucked about with or pretentious. . Lovely local bread and butter thrown in with price. For starters we had the mackerel Pate and the smoked trout, both lovely. For mains, I had Sea Bass (a large filet) and my Wife the Pork (with crackling and Roast Potatoes, jealous mode on) We were also offered Seconds on our mains! (maybe because we are old school and finished our plates.) The portions were generous, we didn’t have room for dessert. If you are early enough there is a small car park outside the restaurant that offers free parking for up to 3 hours before 6pm and since we were early, there was plenty of room.

I've eaten here quite a few times now. It's offers standard English dishes from decades ago. No cheffy touches to the meals, in fact no particular effort with presentation at all. What I thought would be a salmon salad was a good sized fillet on a plate with a potato salad and some hot new potatoes. Then a bowl of green salad where no effort had been made to tear the large leaves into smaller pieces. The restaurant boasts 'the feeling of a family home' and that's clear in the food which is of a reasonable home-cook standard. Portion sizes are pretty good and they often provide seconds. However, the prices are more of a higher end restaurant. Starters around £8, £21.50 for a main and £8.80 for a pudding (although you can have a half portion for half price - and that will be quite big enough) The set menu on lunchtime weekdays is better value. Whatever I've chosen from either menu, I always feel that bit disappointed.

We've been to the Old Fire Engine many times over the last decade and sadly this was likely our final visit. We waited 15 minutes to be given menus (let alone offered a drink). Starters and main courses took two hours with no apology other than "were really busy". The restaurant was full. There was one member of staff waiting. One. A hidden gem in Ely, very unpretentious. I had low expectations as no menu was available on the web site or at the door, but actually they had a wide choice of delicious food ( maybe not as much for vegetarians). Comfortable relaxed dining room, lovely garden, good service and ample amounts of very good food. Would definitely recommend this! ( Can't understand the poor review last month "I don't understand why people eat here" - I asked the staff why they do not respond, but they just don't! Even if they did not like the food, there is no way the portions were small; the staff felt the review was about another restaurant, or maybe from a competitor? ) We had 4 nights in Ely and this was by far the best meal we ate.

If WW2 and rationing are your idea of good food, and you have never been to a restaurant in your life before, then this is the place for you. I would give this place negative stars if possible. The food is awful, like a school dinner from the 1970s trying to mate with the worst "haute cuisine" of the 1980s. A bizarre avocado side with the veg "lasagne" and some venison stew that passed for bad quality dog food, was served with a dish of vegetables boiled to within an inch of their life - just like your worst Brussel sprout nightmare! To drink, we had sour beer and G&T with no ice in a filthy glass. The red wine that followed (in a wine cooler?) was mediocre at best, and they even dare to list a bottle at £700! Add to that a "prosecco" in a single serve bottle from Adnams brewery, very odd addition to the wine list. The service was not awful, but the staff clearly don't know any better and have yet to have the luck to visit real restaurants. The building itself could have been amazing with some TLC and a little bit of contemporary hospitality experience. I'm still not sure if my dinner here was an elaborate prank, or just the worst restaurant experience I am likely to ever have. Avoid at all costs.

I used to come to the old fire engine house with my work mates when I worked in Waterbeach. That was 7 years ago. I can say that after this time it is still retaining its charm and cozy with the food feeling homemade. The staff are very friendly even though they were running around like headless chickens (we came the weekend before Christmas). And of course the building structure remains as it was which makes it even more charming. I came with a couple of Slovenians dubious of British cuisine and I am glad to say that they thoroughly enjoyed it 😊 Ely has a lot of charm despite being such a small town and The Old Fire Engine House is definitely one of the main reasons.

Quite literally one of my favourite restaurants in the world – I’d give it a 6/5 if I could. Their dishes are generally quite simple (and absolutely delicious), which highlights the quality and freshness of their seasonal ingredients. I didn’t think I liked horseradish until I tried theirs, and I still dream of their trifle. The house itself is just so beautiful; in the cold season you might sit by the fire, and when it’s warm outside you can sit in the garden for tea. Great, friendly, expert service. Really good food, served in a pleasant friendly atmosphere. The outdoor seating in the garden is a great way to start your dining experience and then the bay window seating gave us (six) a good way to share a meal and chat

We ordered 2 Americanos and the coffee was weak as dishwater and the cake was dry and inedible- we should have complained but we just wanted to get out of there. They only had 2 choices of gateau and run out of scones so to be honest it was a waste of time and money

Whilst visiting the Cathedral we popped in here for lunch and not disappointed. We received a warm welcome and it was comforting they had excellent social distancing measures in place. The food was delicious along with the service.
