Packed with an after work crowd of city boys, but the service was quick and good, and my dad, who knows about these things, said it was a great pint of draft ale. It's a great spot down a little City alley, olde on the outside, small inside with a good atmosphere. Lots of people out in the alley way out front. A good stop to get a sense of the old City.

Great little find on the surface but food decidedly underwhelming. We both went for the fish finger sandwich. Bread too thick, ‘fish fingers’ weren’t actually fish fingers but slides of breaded fish and cold. Chips also cold. Served drinks at the bar by someone who stayed on her phone while serving us, so all in all not too impressed. On a positive note, lovely oldie worldie pub vibe in a great location.

The kitchen had extremely slow service to the point of offering us a new round of drinks. The food was disappointing, nothing special. Traditional pale ales are not the best. Only the price is acceptable for the area.

We went with a group booking of about 50 people . My husband had the steak and ale pie with mash and red cabbage, which he was delighted with. The pie was full and juicy. I had the vegetarian tagine which was served with quinoa. This had a lovely flavour of herbs , apricots and Eastern promise. The portion was generous and was also glutenfree. Then came the chocolate brownie ...which melted in the mouth- light and perfectly divine. The staff were pleasant and attentive, and the manager was whizzing around making sure all was well. My only disappointment was the coffee which was undrinkable. I'm not sure what coffee they used but it was vile. However, I cannot deduct a point as everything else was marvellous!

A true pub. Not really a tourist spot, locals for lunch and pints to accompany business. Tourists are clearly welcome, but not their bread and butter. Food is rated in what we snacked on, not mains on the menu, which looked delicious and others seemed to like.

I had a great experience at the Old Doctor Butler’s Head in Moorgate. Located in a picturesque alley, this historic pub offers a unique and welcoming atmosphere. I discovered the place by chance, while I was walking around looking for somewhere to inspire me, and it was a pleasant surprise. The owner was extremely kind; even though the kitchen was about to close, he welcomed me with warmth and courtesy. The fish and chips were delicious, crunchy and tasty, accompanied by two sauces, mustard and peas. I would have liked a few more chips... but overall excellent. Very good beer, fresh and balanced. I highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for an authentic and enjoyable place to eat and drink.

Back alley classic London pub hidden in a narrow lane of the City. Superb London street drinking. Dark wood Victorian city pub interior. Excellent larger than it looks, split level drinking hall with plenty of open space, quiet corners and mix of vintage, leather studded, wood framed corner benches and high stools. Wood panelled walls and brilliant wood beamed ceiling. Glass paned and balustrades divide the space creating and open feeling, yet secluded and private corners. A Timeless City Slicker Pub, nestled in a charming alleyway near the Guildhall, Old Doctor Butler's Head is a truly traditional pub that exudes classic charm. Its dark wood interior creates a cozy atmosphere, and the split-level bar downstairs and an inviting upstairs dining room offer ample space for patrons to enjoy their visit. The pedestrianized area out front provides a welcome respite for smokers and those seeking a pleasant outdoor drinking experience. As a Shepherd's Neame pub, Old Doctor Butler's Head proudly serves their full range of cask ales. During my visit, I had the pleasure of enjoying a couple of pints of Bishop's Finger after a day's work, just before the pub started to fill up with the after-work crowd. The quality of the ale was commendable, providing a satisfying and enjoyable drinking experience. Old Doctor Butler's Head perfectly embodies the essence of a traditional pub, offering a warm and inviting ambiance amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you're seeking a relaxed after-work drink or a casual dining experience, this timeless establishment is sure to please. Cheers to that 🍺

We finished off an evening with drinks at this pub in the City. It's an old place surrounded by mostly newer buildings and retains much old character. We didn't have food here but only ale. We went for a drink 18/11/19. Arrived just after 17.00 to find the only real beer on was Whitstable Bay IPA, staggeringly the management of this pub had allowed it to run out of Spitfire/Bishops Finger/etc. A friend had a pint of Guinness, that was his one and only, it was disgusting. They then managed to also run out of Whitstable Bay IPA, leaving only Bear Island on. Truly badly managed. The manager/owners (Shepherd Neame?) should be totally ashamed.

We arrived at the pub and was instantly welcomed by the lady with the purple hair (I forgot her full name) but was shortened to dani I believe. We travelled from Vancouver for a friends met up and decided to try a traditional English pub with a great history. And we wasn’t disappointed the steak and ale pie was incredible not something we’re accustomed to in Vancouver but really enjoyed it. I order drinks at the bar assuming that it’s the same set up in Canada with full table service in the bar, but it’s not but dani instantly told us to remain at our seats and she would come over in a couple of minutes and take the food order, and bring the drinks she did and we all had a chat and I was taken aback how easy to talk to and friendly she was it’s very rare in London to find bartenders that will take the extra time to recommend, food ,drinks and places to visit in the city and also not be rushed to remain on the bar because they’re busy, we will definitely come again in two months to visit dani she was exactly what we needed thanks dani see you in a few months

We had a pre-booked table for eight people and arrived on time. Alarm bells should have rung when it took at least fifteen minutes for our drinks order to be taken and the same again to take our food order. The waiter then re-visited the table on numerous occasions to double check he hadn't missed an order (he had), tell us that they had run out of steak, and then that they had run out of pork chops. Despite all this, we couldn't order from the bar menu. Due to the delays, a couple of our party had to return to the office for meetings. We didn't make a big deal out of this and just said we would take the food with us when we left. Most of the meals came out; however, despite the time between our order being taken and the meals coming out, I could still hear them discussing my meal in the kitchen. I asked what the delay was, and the waiter said they only had two chefs on and it was busy downstairs. The food was okay. When it came to paying the bill, we asked to speak to the manager in order to air our concerns. That was our second mistake (our first had been deciding to eat here). We would have been better off drafting in Basil Fawlty (on a bad day) for a chat. He didn't even let my colleague finish, before he started raising his voice and getting shouty. Instead of going on the defensive immediately, maybe he could have actually listened to our feedback and spoke to us as if we were, let me think, customers, and not a group of kids that hadn't just spent £130 in his pub ("his pub" are his words, even though it is a managed house, and not actually his pub). This guy shouldn't be in a customer facing role. I dread to think how he treats his staff. The waiter had been apologetic; the chef was apologetic as we left, saying that he had done his best and it was just extremely busy. Average food, poor (if apologetic) service, and a rude, aggressive manager who seems to think people should treat eating here as some kind of privilege.

The ODBH is a classic City pub near the Guildhall. It’s tucked away on an alley off a street and you could easily walk within yards off it without realising. It’s a Shepherd Neame pub selling the likes of Spitfire and Whistable Bay which, in itself, is worth stopping by for. The staff are lightning fast and work together on each other’s order to keep the beer flowing and tills ringing. The food is good too – try the fish and chips, the club sandwich or the Malay chicken sandwich. All good portions and they arrive quickly. Today, we’d ordered food but were stuck for a spot to eat – the manager grabbed a free table and guided us to it. It’s all part of the service. There are plenty of insipid, faceless City bars serving tasteless beer and overcharging you for poor food. The ODBH is a cut above all that and well worth a try.

If you want a nice coffee, don't go there! Price definitely doesn't match the quality! I suggest training the staff before letting them brew the coffees!
