I have to highly recommend this place, after a long walk in Castlewellan Forest Park we had to find a place that was dog friendly. Found it on Google and it was worth the trek to the far side of town. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Fish and chips were delicious. Real fire burning in the hearth. The staff provided dog treats and water for the dogs. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon had by all

Me and my partner stayed in room 7, During our stay the staff in the bar were very monotone and unenthusiastic, we felt unwelcome. We asked about the heating in the room as it was freezing cold on the first night, they failed to come and help us, the following night we went down to ask for assistance and when the lady finally came up she was quite adamant that the hotel was warm and we was wrong about it being cold, she did then proceed to tell us “I’ll put it on a 3 hour booster” The pub in a a nutshell was overpriced and my partner was being charged double prices for a single shot of vodka. It was almost like they put 100% into the pub next door but forgot about the hotel, all weekend (except Sunday) there was loud music playing until early hours in the morning, bearing in mind there was a small baby in the room across from ours. To top it off just before leaving the hotel we asked for milk at the bar which we then realised it was mouldy inside the bottle!Only saving grace was the rooms were decent enough but I’d still give it a 6/10 for the quality and the cleaners for the hotel we’re very very friendly.

Went here tonight for food and it’s my boyfriend and our dog. Been here before but never with my dog and I would highly recommend to anyone to go here. They have a set menu which is small but was everything you’d want (steak, chicken goujons etc). Food was so yummy! The staff made us feel so comfortable and gave my dog treats and some water as well as one member giving her so much love and scratches. They view is stunning. The only down fall is staff not wearing face masks or visors which I think is essential especially in Newcastle after the recent weeks of incidents and the overall situation with COVID.. when we went it wasn’t overly busy so it wasn’t too bad but I think if it was busy I would of felt so anxious. There is hand sanitiser at both front and back entrances.

I have to concur with the previous contributor there was no social distancing measures in place in this pub. Staff were not wearing masks and tables not being sanitised. No one way system in place so staff and customers brushing past each other and all sitting very close. O'hares you need to up your game and look after your customers and staff!!

My boyfriend and I went in for a dinner after climbingb Slieve Donard and we were told we were had to wait 25-30 minutes for a table and that we should get a drink at the bar and have a seat whilst we waited. We waited an hour before the waitress who was supposed to come and get us walked out past us to leave and when we went in see why we hadn't been seated yet, we were told the restaurant closed ten minutes ago. It was a waste of time and money and I wouldn't recommend. We went to Quinn's Bar about 5 minutes away and we're seated immediately which really emphasized the difference in quality of service.

Anytime I'm in Newcastle I always make a point of calling in. There is always a homely atmosphere to this bar. With the fire going, friendly locals and views out the window, it's always great to sit in for a minute or for the day. Nial, the manager knows every local that comes through the door and makes new faces feel very welcome. The success of this place is down to the hard working staff. I'm already planning my next trip back to Newcastle

Attended a wedding ceremony and reception at the newly overhauled Hugh McCanns recently. Overall very pleased, with just a few small tweaks that would make it excellent. The venue itself was very modern, bright and clean, though unless you were bringing a lot of your own decorations, perhaps a bit anodyne. Brilliant central location with great parking and accommodation options for guests. The function room and bar are really excellent for a smallish wedding. I think there were just over a hundred dinner guests, which seemed a bit of a squeeze, but not uncomfortably so. Any larger a party would struggle though. The staff were excellent, all very attentive and friendly. A special mention to both the upstairs "wedding manager" (?) and the downstairs bar manager, both of whom were obviously well experienced and very keen to help the day run as smoothly as possible for the wedding party. Most people seemed happy with their food, though I found the only vegetarian option disappointing (soggy, bland tomato pasta). The split level arrangement (bar and lounge semi-separated from the dining/dancing room) worked really well, with everyone who wanted to sit and talk well catered for, those who wanted music and dancing had plenty of space and seating, and niether felt completely removed from the other. Fish and chips and bacon baps served late in the evening were top quality also. I know the wedding couple were happy with with the base price of the package, though I think some of the "extras" seemed a needlessly expensive. We stayed in the "little haven" next door, which I will review separately, but would recommend for wedding guests.

Came in for some food and drinks for my birthday,Had to ask for menus because no one bothered to come near us for about 15 mins, when we asked a waitress could we have a menu she checked her phone for the time which I then only could assume that they were stopping serving soon- not for being this. 20 mins later we get the menu and choose our food and no one comes near us again to take our order so we go to the bar to get food and the same waitress tell us they have stopped serving food!!? And that we shouldn’t have been given menus- when it was HER that gave us them. We had already ordered drinks at this time and they were poured out so after her huffing and puffing she told us to go down and someone would be over- I told her not to bother due to her horrible attitude towards it all and walked back to my seat with the drinks and she then proceeded to shout over from the middle of the floor that ‘if your not actually getting food then you need to pay for your drinks?!’ Is this a joke?! Don’t give customers food choices and not come near them to take their orders before the kitchen shuts. Actually ridiculous we won’t be back

I’ve visited O’Hares 4 times. Twice for food, once to stay over and once to have a drink. Tonight was the worst from a food perspective. We were shown to a suitable table, not easy for a large group with a wheelchair, and menus provided. Unfortunately the two vegetarians and a grand total of one option on the menu. When we asked we were given another option so everyone ordered. When the food arrived it was bland, and there was clearly a ration on the chips! The veggie burgers were quite burgers in baps. End of. Served with a bit of droopy salad and the rationed basket of chips. The rest of the orders weren’t much better.

Ordered the chicken goujons and chips, which came out quite quick but by a waitress that really didn't seem to want to be there-"there's your goujons" she said after setting down the plate....didnt ask if we wanted anything else, which I did because I needed salt and vinegar for my chips-which tasted and looked like oven chips or frozen deep fried at best to be truthful-I had to go find someone for salt&vinegar.; The goujons were battered and greasy. Not impressed by service or food, it was a quiet day being midweek so no excuse for this imo.

We went to O'Hare's as a family group. While the venue is okay the food certainly wasn't. One of our party had to send back a ham on the bone meal as it just wasn't cooked for long enough. The chips were made from frozen which is unacceptable for a restaurant. The rest of the food was nothing special. However, I wouldn't have bothered even submitting a review if it wasn't for the rude barman I encountered later. I went up to the bar and a barman asked what I wanted. As I was telling him, he turned around to speak to another staff member and then just walked away without any more interaction with me. So, I and the rest of our group walked out.

There is something very wrong with the Guinness served in this pub. Three times I've ventured in here for a casual pint, and on all three occasions have noticed that their Guinness looks and tastes decidedly suspect. If you hold it to the light it has the appearance of Guinness which has been diluted. When you taste it this confirms your first impressions based upon the appearance. I don't know what is going on with the Guinness in this pub, but if you go into any of the other bars/pubs in Newcastle you'll get a decent or average pint of Guinness. In O' Hares you'll get a pint of Guinness which looks and tastes weak and diluted. All in all, in my experience, not a good place in Newcastle to visit for Guinness. The cold and aloof attitude of some of the barmen also leaves a lot to be desired.

What should have been a great meal was a disaster, The Bar was very olde Worlde (see the Photos). Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to hype. The bar does have a good reputation locally and this was my wife and I first visit despite living not too far away. The staff were great, the two we met were friendly and chatty. The food was carelessly done.I ordered smoked Haddock with leek sauce, poached egg and chips instead of the advertised mash, My wife ordered the "Homemade burger" with garlic chips. The food arrived looking appetising. i was delighted to see the haddock was properly smoked instead of the dyed rubbish which usually passes for smoked. The sauce was well made. The fish, however, was raw in the middle and when cut clear liquid poured out. At first glance, I thought the egg was underdone but it proved to be the fish that was raw and possibly the heat of the egg had thawed the centre of the fish. My wife`s burger did not appear to be homemade but rather a very dense commercial type but tasty. The chips were not garlic chips as ordered. I was offered a replacement meal which i declined. We split the burger and paid the bill. As stated on the title , this is another one off the list . We won't be back. When reviewing further establishments i will remark on two items. Cleanliness of the restrooms/ toilets and value for money on the tea or coffee. It appears more establishments are charging exorbitant rates for tea. All too frequently it will be several pounds for one tea bag in a tiny pot. In my opinion, it is ripping off the customers,I ordered tea which arrived in a miniature pot. £2.30 for this tiny pot is not good value. the first cup was also dirty and had to be replaced. The restrooms/ toilets were very clean and smelled fresh,

COMPLAINT - just want to say how disgusted I am at your staff today I had reserved a table for 9 people 5 adults and 4 kids , as a few of us went on to get the table for 1 o'clock ,upon arrival we didn't feel very welcomed telling us that we couldn't order drinks until 2 o'clock in her words to another staff member he was told to go to are table and lift all the good glasses from our table , so then come in the rest of our party who had purchased 3 small kids meals from kfc ( BECAUSE 3 kids of ours has AUTISM and don't eat a lot of foods ) , the same member of staff very rudely asked us all to leave because of the kfc even though the staff down stairs said it wouldn't be a problem we do understand that a lot of places have a policy about bringing food in but we have been ere b4 without a problem once we explained about the autism , we have even been to places that have it clearly stated that no food should be eaten on there property and then they accommodated us because of the autism , when we explained to her member of staff about kids autism she didn't care at all, never have I felt so u welcome because of an illness , you have lost a very good customer who frequently visited ur bar and rented the full haven house more than once, BEWARE FOLKS THIS PLACE IS NOT AUTISM FRIENDLY

My girlfriend and I ate lunch here during a driving golf/distillery holiday of Scotland/Ireland in August 2015. While we went to eat in the main bar area, we were informed that lunch was only served in the café/bistro section next door. The food was tasty. Serving size for the price paid could have been a little larger, but not too bad. Service was good. We would probably eat in the bar area for dinner if we were back in the area to try it out.

The food was really good but after an unbelievably long wait, a surly waiter, the wrong food delivered and having to chase someone to get our drinks ordered, we had a thoroughly horrible time. We will not go here again.

I have been round most places in newcastle and I have to say this is the best spot in the town.Pub food is fantastic, without doubt the burgers are the best I have ever had anywhere.Brilliant atmosphere in the place, so relaxed. No problem bringing young children into the bar. Great atmosphere if a match is on or if a band is playing. The beer is brilliant. The staff are warm and charming. The decor is brilliant. This should be held up to other bars throughout Ireland as what a pub should be.

Stopped in for a quick drink ended up spending the afternoon in an absolutely charming traditional pub which served amazing food. Fire was blazing up the chimney, listening to lovely music whilst we relaxed watching the world go by. We saw some of the food diners were having around us so we just couldn't help ourselves...we had to have what was the most tastiest fish n chips I have ever had. Def on my bucket list to go back to this lovely quaint spot. Btw the staff were wonderful too, very helpful and welcoming.

We were in Newcastle visiting family and friends this bar broke up the journey between our accommodation at the Seaview Appartment's and the centre of Newcastle. THE place was always very rowdy and crowded and always difficult to get attention for bar service. Bar was very popular with youngsters who always seemed to hang around the main entrance like moths attracted to the bars exterior lights. Loud disco like music in here and due to the crowds you would have to push through the hoards to get to the toilets or to te bar. On a couple of occasions there was live music which hade it difficult to get seating. If you like loud music and people watching then this is the place.

On my first ever visit I was excited venue is beautiful very cosy and welcoming. Unfortunately we were put on a table in a bit of a drafty area I asked if we could shift over to an empty table that was reserved however the party did not arrive for at least 2 hours after us. The menu had a deal on with white or red wine I drink rose but was told no it's not on the deal, our food was cold and just ok I was a bit disappointed.

During a 2 night stay in Newcastle my dog and I were made welcome in O'Hares. She quietly lay beside my feet under the table and was well behaved. The food was excellent as was the service. We enjoyed our first experience so much we returned the 2nd night and were not disappointed.

When my husband, myself, son and daughter-in-law first arrived in Newcastle, we had to kill some time before we were to meet Tony at the condo. We parked downtown and came across O'Hares. Glad we did. Food was good, service was way above average and the prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity. Would be a good choice to consider when in Newcastle.

We have been coming to Newcastle for years now and this bar is always on our to do list, in fact any trip is never complete without visiting this Bar. It has everything from great food, out of this world cocktails, fantastic outdoor areas, a great range of drinks at a reasonable price and the absolute best in live entertainment we could find. The staff are the friendliest we've found and it always seems to be packed which is obviously a good sign. Next time you're in Newcastle make sure you stop in, you won't regret it!

After being housebound for 3 weeks I was really looking forward to getting out and about and having a nice lunch. On our last trip to Newcastle about 4/5 weeks ago we went to The Harbour Bar and thought we would try O'Hares this time. What a mistake! Both the young waiters upstairs were very pleasant - one guy, one girl - but ...To start off with my glass was dirty - lipstick marks the whole way around the rim. Then, having decided not to have a starter we went straight up for main course. There were a stack of plates to the left of the serving area but only two of them were warming on the hot plate and both of them were dirty. I had just time to scrap the piece of dirt off my plate before being served - but my husband didn't as he was ahead of me. Meat choices - roast beef, lamb, Turkey and ham. I had the turkey and ham and my husband had the turkey and roast beef. There is nothing positive to say about any of the meats. The ham and beef were cut quite thickly and both were very tough. When cutting into the ham it was like cutting into rubber. I had jokingly asked if my husband needed a steak knife to cut his roast beef as he appeared to be struggling! The turkey wasn't much better and had no taste. The stuffing was dry dry dry - like breadcrumbs with a bit of something green thrown in for a bit of colour. Again tasteless. Creamed potatoes were quite doughy/heavy. Needless to say, we decided to call it a day and didn't try desert! We definitely won't be back and I would suggest if you fancy a decent bite to eat in Newcastle, try The Harbour Bar! It mightn't look like much but don't let that put you off - the food's lovely!PS - the large notice boards out the back of O'Hares say "Sunday Carvery from £9.95". It is in fact £10.95 for main course and extra for additional courses.

O'Hares never lets us down. Its the spot to be while in Newcastle. Service is always with a smile and nothing is too much trouble. Its welcoming and inviting with plenty of Entertainment. Really love the décor inside, and the cocktail bar area is stunning. So lovely for somewhere to relax on a good day. I have to commend the staff on the cocktails too! Homemade and fresh, and made with love. They don't cut any corners and the proof is in the product. Food here is also excellent and all tasted are widely catered for, but my personal favourite is the steak, although the Chowder is pretty spectacular too! Big screens throughout the building, showing all the big matches and the atmosphere is always great! Popular for weddings now, and its easy to see why. Perfect location in the Mourne's with ample parking and a recently renovated B&B right next door, which is delightful. O'Hares really have it all going on! You don't need to step too far out of here while in Newcastle. Never disappoints.

Walking into O'Hares is like steeping back in time. The décor is perfectly done to give that old but familiar feel.I ordered The Seafood Chowder starter as a bigger main course portion my wife decided to make the sharing platter starter her main course. The Chowder was extremely good with lots of fish and the sauce had a lovely smokiness to it. The sharing platter had ribs and wings amongst other delights. The staff were very friendly and the food quality and quantity was very pleasing.Prices are very reasonable making O'Hares a firm favourite when in Newcastle.

All in all you couldn't complain about the excellent service and food, but I didn't rate OHares "excellent" on one simple downfall: they charged us £1.75 for extra gravy on the roast. We ordered off their special board so we were not privy to the prices charged for "extras" (if you could consider gravy an extra when ordering a roast!).If your gravy is so good you charge an appreciative customer £1.75 for an extra spoonful of it, then you should really wise up and change your "management policy."
