Northern Whig in Belfast

So it’s Monday and on a whim decided to venture into town and very glad I did. (Mon 13 Dec 21)Called into the Whig, got a table and after perusing the menu and a chat with Jamie-Lee decided to try the Baked Salmon fillet with chorizo & soft herb crust and caper beurre blanc.This is NOT a dish I would have thought of trying before but after her recommendation decided to try it out and very glad I did.The Salmon came down on a bead of mash surrounded by vegetables (carrots, parsnip, sprouts) with the sauce around it and some roast potatoes.Going by the less is more saying, the amount of sauce was perfect for this dish.I’d really recommend this dish to anyone without hesitation.Service was attentive and Jamie-Lee was very helpful :-)I’ll be back again soon, and I hope the chefs have not removed this from the menu!

We booked for our staff Christmas dinner and the staff were fantastic through each step. Organising a large group of people with them was easy and they were quick to reply to emails with any questions we had. On the night the staff were friendly and helpful with anything we needed and the service was excellent.

Our party had a fantastic Christmas night out. The food was delicious and the service second to none. The staff were very accommodating and the restaurant had a nice relaxed buzz about the place. Highly recommended. Will definitely be back in the near future.

Myself and my partner visited the northern whig 21/11/21. We had the pleasure of being served by Mirek! He was the most attentive waiter I’ve ever been served by. He took brilliant care of us and we were most grateful. Our starters were also fabulous. The buffalo wings were nice and spicy just how my partner likes. My smoked salmon, crab and prawn ballotine was something I’d never tried before and now one of my favourite meals due to this serving! Turkey & ham dinner also very tasty! Will be back for definite!

Great lunch with super service by jamieleigh!!! We’ve been in twice recently and food has been great both times

8 of us dined on Friday night, the steak sandwiches in particular went down a treat. The lady who served us and kept up topped up on drinks was the best craic and made the visit even more memorable too. We will definitely be back, thank you so much.

We had previously booked our table for 6 people at 1.45 on 29th October. The staff were very friendly. We got our table and ordered drinks. Then ordered our food. We asked a few questions which was no bother to the staff. Orders came prefect to each of us even the drinks were given to each of us perfectly. Great staff great food. Would definitely recommend the Northern Whig. So cosy we could have stayed longer lol.

Just had lunch here food was lovely service was crap to put it politely waiting to order food the girls serving one had an english accent swearing I heard a few rimes as she was telling her story not great at all in a restaurant. ordered drinks then ordered starter and mains and sat for over an hour n half in total n was never even offered another drink not asked was the meal good had to ask for the bill and then waited for somone to come back to take the bill that never happened had to then go myself to ask where to pay.fpr such a nice place they would need to sort the servers out..certainly wouldn't be rushing to go back..

We stopped by here on a Sunday evening for some food on a recommendation from friends. Excellent! We had a lovely seat at the window , the food and drinks were lovely. The place itself is very trendy and comfortable.Above all we have to mention the staff who were very attentive especially Mirek. A lovely guy who looked after us very well all evening. We also had a lovely chat with him. Big pat on the the back should be given to him from management for representing your establishment so well. We will definitely return!

Just had a wonderful evening meal with drinks in the Northern Whig. Food was prompt and very tasty, staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and they were extremely attentive. Beer was as it should be, cold as ice! Would highly recommend this place for food or just a few drinks. Pub looks wonderful, decor is fab and great covid precautions in place! We will be back!

Had lunch here today. Food was exceptionally good. My daughter and I had the Korean fried chicken and my husband had the fish and chips. Service was really good. Very nice restaurant and pleasant atmosphere.

We ate at the northern Whig on the 24th of September 2021.Our waiter's name was Mirek, he was very helpful, kind and very efficient and quick with getting our food and drinks to us.If I ever come back to Belfast I will 100% be going back to the Northern Whig because Mirek made us feel so welcome.

Fabulous service and they found us a table with no booking. We chose absolutely delicious fish and chips, which was fairly priced compared to other restaurants in the city centre.

Meal was lovely, reasonably priced and the server Mirek was fantastic, he was so helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

This is a great pub. We had a nice meal which was served piping hot. The staff were friendly and attentive. The Guinness is served perfectly.There is a large outside seating area at the front of the pub, just the job for enjoying a pint in the fresh air.

Having perused their web site/menu and phoned ahead to book a table, was unfortunately underwhelmed by the actual experience. We were presented with a very truncated version of their web menu…on querying this we were advised this was because of Covid. Why not the make this clear on line than set up an expectation (could be of course I might have missed something?!). The food was ok. Service pleasant enough and no doubt if the place had been busier the atmosphere might have been a bit more inviting to linger. Lovely old building….looks like it was a one time newspaper office, so nice to see these buildings taking on a new life.

Came here on a recommendation fromThe forum , it did not disappoint , we ate and drank here on two separate occasions on our recent trip .customer service was great, friendly and quick service , food was fabulous and the cocktails the best we had ,will return on our next trip

Was here a few weeks back and the food and service were excellent, decided to rebook again for my wife’s birthday which was on Friday, when we arrived it was quite obvious that they had no idea a booking was arriving as the table we sat at wasn’t set up and felt like we were just shoved in a corner, we ordered drinks of a girl, which came down quickly but were just plonked down at the end of the table, another guy took our order my self and my wife ordered the exact same thing and told him “ exactly the same as that order” the girl then returned with napkins and knives and fork which were just thrown down at the end of the table again, we decided to go for a smoke and used the side door, literally 4 minutes or so we returned to our food sitting at the table anywhere else the waiter/waitress would have held the order back until our return, there we no condiments offered or salt/pepper in sight, we had ordered two rare steak sandwiches which arrived both well done, a pathetic excuse for mushrooms under the steak, and one battered onion ring on the side, we had both ordered garlic potatoes, we got chips and cubed potatoes, my daughter had ordered southern fried chicken goujons, she received battered strips that were burnt the whole way through and dripping with fat! We had noticed that the place was getting a bit smokey, then the fire alarm went off, no one came and said anything or apologised about the noise from it, we sat for near 10 minutes before we were told to evacuate as the fire brigade were on their way, that just topped the whole experience off, we stood outside and were not approached by any member of staff to let us know what was going on, I asked one member of staff how long it would be and got a cheeky reply, I then said to another that we had to be elsewhere and he just replied emmmm emmmm emmm don’t worry about it, well I’m glad that alarm went of as ive never been so glad to get out of somewhere so quick, food was terrible, staff didn’t care and showed no experience of hospitality towards us, ok I get it about the fire alarm, but a bit of staff training on fire drills should be mandatory! Very disappointed with the whole experience which put a bit of a dampener on my wife’s birthday celebrations!

Situated right on a corner you cannot miss this bright lively bar. Cocktails are a must here though they do have lots of drink on offer.

The girls and I come here often and we are never disappointed. Food was delicious and cocktails were lovely. Super friendly staff and our server Michael today (29 August 21) was great, super attentive, friendly and efficient.

Went here for lunch on a Friday and really enjoyed it. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and very attentive. We hadn't reserved a table but were seen to quickly and got a table. The lunch was delicious , really nice fresh food! We had the chicken burger, steak sandwich and scampi. Highly recommended and keep up the great service!

Visited here for dinner and drinks on our last night in Belfast, and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and the cocktails were amazing. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive - particularly Mirek, Paddy, and Andrew. Would highly recommend this place.

We just enjoyed a Sunday lunch 3 course meal for £20 pp. Food was beautiful and good choice of either lamb, turkey and ham or roast beef. I opted for turkey and ham and my husband chose the roast beef. Meat was tender and very tasty. Good selection of starters and desserts. Well worth the price. Beautiful surroundings and the most friendly of staff

Lovely atmosphere with prompt service and great food. Mirek was our waiter and he was excellent at his job, super waiter and was great craic ! Will Definetely come again!

Visited here with my partner after passing in a taxi for some lunch and drinks. Warmly welcomed and immediately offered a choice of drinks with recommendations and a food menu. I chose a steak sandwich, thinking it would be a lighter option. Clearly this wasn't the case lol but I can only say it was beautiful! Throughout our visit the waiter was attentive and engaging and service impeccable. I would gladly advise anyone to come here for a most enjoyable experience.

Sunday lunch with friends Starter - buffalo wings, slightly over done but a decent flavour Main course - Roast beef dinner, well presented however the beef was a bit tough, roast potatoes over done and not enough gravy. Veg was well cooked and mash was very tasty Dessert - Brownie and ice cream, rich flavour to the brownie and an above average ice cream. For £20 it was decent value. Was it nice, yes but I’ll not be rushing back.Service was good and atmosphere perfect for a Sunday lunch. However the light above our table kept flickering which did annoy my friends and I Overall 3 stars. Decent value, but didn’t wow me.

This is the second time this month we have visited the northern whig for food and drinks. The staff are amazingly friendly and the food and drinks are great and very reasonably priced considering you're in the heart of Belfast.

Visited here on Sunday evening for dinner with my partner, everything was amazing, from the food to the service to the decor and the cocktails, first class couldn’t fault anything will definitely be back

Great to be back in the Whig. It's our usual wee spot when we go into the town and today didn't disappoint. We had food and drinks. The food was delicious and the service was great even though it was extremely busy. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and Mirek in the coffee bar is a gem.

This was my first time in this bar. Myself and several friends attended the bar over the weekend. The service through the app and the friendliness of the staff was great. We had quite a few drinks as well as food which were all of very high quality.I would definitely recommend and will most certainly revisit.

First time out in Belfast since things have opened back up. Was out with a group of friends. Food was first class, and service was brilliant throughout. Downloaded and ordered through the app all night, couldn't fault it.

I recently visited the bar for the first time with some friends and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The staff were extremely friendly and it was easy to order the drinks via the very efficient app. We also had some delicious food. Will definitely be back.

We stopped off for a few pints on Sunday afternoon. We sat outside and used the app to order and pay for our drinks. I was impressed with the app. Order placed and the drinks where drought out with 2 or 3 minutes. No queuing up waiting to get served or handing over money and waiting to be given your change. Great service.

My husband and I are regular visitors to Belfast and The Northern Whig has always been one of our favourite places to go (it's close to our hotel).We visited in July last year (during covid restrictions) with my dad and his partner, and had a delicious meal and spent a good few hours sitting with a couple of drinks. However, on our visit in May we were all left slightly disappointed.The 4 of us visited for dinner, we had high expectations based on previous visits, but the food was disappointing. My husband and dad's partner had the Nachos to start and both were disappointed, it was like the nachos you'd get a the cinema and not very warm, also the portion size was too big for a starter. The prawns that myself and my dad were nice enough. Mains - I had lamb, I wasn't impressed, it was slightly overcooked and just didn't have much flavour and the potato wasn't cooked enough. My husbands burger was Ok but nothing to write home about, same with my dad and his partners food.We didn't highlight it at the time, I think more so because we were a bit shocked. I'm hoping it's just a one off as recently just re opened after lockdown and still trying to find their feet.As always though the drinks and staff were spot on, we will be back again. Here's hoping it's back to the expected high standard.

Took a trip to the Whig on Monday 24 May 21, first day of lockdown easing 2021 allowing people to dine inside.For starters opted for the asian king butterflied prawns with noodles, very light & tasty.Then for main course I went for the korean chicken stir fry on a bed of vegetables with chunky chips.Great taste and lovey smokey flavour from the vegetables.For dessert the vanilla & raspberry panna cotta served with chocolate shavings, light yet filling.All washed down of course with a few pints.In all a great afternoon out in a relaxed atmosphere to ease me out of lockdown!

Lovely surroundings and very pleasant service. Disappointing lamb which was mostly cartledge and bone.

Great meal but made so much better because of the waiter, namely MIREK, brilliant service, this guy is a bonus to any business.

I love it in here. Food is outstanding, never fails to be good. Service is really fast, with friendly waiters. Has a lovely layout to sit and eat in, not too loud but not quite.

Este bar / restaurante era encantador, está muy bien decorado y bien iluminado.La comida que encontré estaba bien, tenía alas para comenzar, que eran encantadoras.Luego pedí pescado y patatas fritas para mi plato principal y lo encontré muy soso / insípido.Los cócteles eran muy agradables y el personal era realmente encantador, servicial y eficiente.Me imagino que normalmente habría una atmósfera animada aquí si no fuera por las restricciones de Covid, pero desafortunadamente estaba realmente tranquilo con falta de atmósfera.Estaría dispuesto a intentarlo de nuevo una vez que todas las restricciones desaparezcan, ya que parecía un lugar lo suficientemente moderno.

Visité el Northern Whig ayer. Todo el personal fue muy servicial, desde que llegamos hasta que nos fuimos. Comida deliciosa, gran variedad de vinos. Cócteles tan buenos. No queríamos irnos. Gracias por la tarde perfecta. Todo esto dentro de las limitaciones de Covid. Fue genial estar fuera de nuevo. No puedo esperar a volver.

The Northern Whig was wonderful! I came for some quiet drinks and had some bar snacks with my sister! Mirek was wonderful company, he extended kindness and provided exceptional service. I will definitely be coming back :)

Hemos estado dos veces recientemente. Una vez para tomar algo sentado afuera. Esperamos durante años y nos sentimos obligados a descargar la aplicación y ordenar y pagar solo entonces para que el personal saliera a tomar el pedido.De todos modos volvimos a comer un par de días más tarde y el bar ha sido muy bien renovado (los baños necesitan arreglos, aunque lamento que hayan sido renovados pero no de acuerdo con el tema del lugar). La comida estuvo bien. La hamburguesa Piri piri era sosa y no muy picante. Buen valor y personal agradable. Se eliminaron 2 debido a aplicaciones / baños y una hamburguesa insípida.

The food was beautiful and the service was excellent friendly staff especially our waiter from The Czech Republic with a beautiful Belfast Accent.

We have eaten several times in the Whig since lockdown was lifted. Each time the service and quality of food was faultless. Really good safety measures in place, staff were friendly and welcoming, the food couldn’t be faulted.

Came for drinks on Bank Holiday monday and they were absolutely fine. Unfortunately I have to mark them down as they want you to use the App, but charge a % fee based on your order. At a time where people have lost jobs etc and using the app should be encouraged, this is pretty poor. If ordering food etc this works out to be a substantial additional charge.

We dined here twice with the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and both times the food and staff were excellent. Plenty of choices on the menu to suit every taste. The menu was explained by the staff and we found them very friendly and helpful even though they were rushed off their feet. Well done and a big Thank you to all of them. The wine we wanted wasn't available on our first visit but the manager went out of his way to find us an alternative which wasn't on the menu which was first class. The restaurant was very clean and social distancing firmly in place. We will definitely be returning in the future. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking good food, great value and friendly helpful staff in Belfast.

Went to the Northern Wig with my friend, we both got 3 courses and the food was delicious, I highly recommend! The waiter was very friendly, the customer service we recieved was excellent. Social distancing was in place at all times and the bouncer outside was lovely and pointed out the hand sanitiser before we entered the building. Northern Wig has some of nicest staff in Belfast. We will definitely be back!

Myself and 2 other family members went here for dinner during the eat out to help out scheme. Me and my husband used to frequent here for food as it was always one of our go to spots in town, especially before concerts etc. Hand gel available before entering. We were sat at a high table at the back so social distance was maintained. I know not everywhere is doing it, but could be good to check customers temperatures before entering as well. We were given out menus which are thrown out after use. Had I have known this I would have only asked the waitress for one menu to reduce waste. Half the staff really needed to put a smile on their faces, service could have been better, I understand its busy with the scheme going on as they now have what feels like 2 weekends crammed into every week for August, but cheer up, it really puts a dampener on the atmosphere! We ordered food, we were not told about the 3 courses for £10 deal... But 2 of us ordered 3 courses. The food was really disappointing, it has really gone downhill, I had to explain to the rest of my party that the food used to be good and we had never come across food like it in here before... The crispy chicken wings were not crispy at all, the vegetable spring rolls tasted like frozen ones with a really salty hoi sin sauce. The main meals were OK, except for the ravioli pasta was terrible, presented like what I can only describe looked like some kind of baby food, the ravioli had very little spinach and ricotta in it, some didn't have any in them! All I could taste was the pasta and tomato sauce. For dessert we ordered the millionaires cheesecake which came out and the top layer on both cheesecakes had slid off and didn't look appealing.. Then you would have needed a saw to cut the base of it, we actually had to use our hands to cover the cheesecake so as it didn't. fly off the plate and hit someone while we were trying to cut into it. I think it was probably the 1st dessert I have never finished...All in all it was a very disappointing experience, and I won't be back anytime soon unless the food improves drastically.

Came here for a late lunch with my partner on quiet Wednesday. Service and food were amazing. Social distancing adhered to. Part of the Eat out to help out scheme but to be honest it was well worth full price. I had Korean chicken for main course and my partner had the steak sandwich. We were so full we only managed to share the cheesecake for dessert.Ten out of ten for us!!!!

Let's be very clear, if you want a drink,only, you just sit outside! Not a issue, I found a seat on my own table, ordered drink on an app..15 min later, beer arrived (could have been much quicker of course). My issue is with the staff inviting other people to sit with me on my table. 6 others to be precise, and so close they touch me and cough over me. Not being funny but this wasnt on! What happened to 1 or 2 meters? The pub have prioritised profit over safety and ought to be shut down (and thoroughly ashamed)

Visited here in Saturday. Beautiful building and excellent service. Booked a table for 6 people and paid deposit of £30 which came off the bill at the end of the night. Food was amazing and staff were so friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Belfast. Keep up the good work and high standards. Hope to be back soon

Had a fabulous experience in The Northern Whig last Tuesday, and to be honest even if the food wasn’t up to scratch (which it was!!) the service would make me come back 100 time’s over. On entry the doorman could not be nicer, more welcoming, friendly and just bludy lovely, then the I assume- manager seated us, lovely. The young lady who took our order very chatty and knowledgeable about the menu and the guy clearing tables was interacting with customers, having a laugh and very personable. Even though it was eat out to help out, and places are struggling with demand, the northern Whigs food did not disappoint..** especially the chicken wings!! Free Well done Northern Whig!!!

Ate here last week with my wife and a young baby,food was fab and service was excellent but i just wanna highlight Mirek who served us everything about this man was pleasant and nice, from the get go everything we asked of him he went out of his way to do with a smile, his table service and manner was perfect, a genteman with great service

I have been a fairly regular visitor in the past but haven't been for some time. Good to know some things never change. Made a reservation recently for a work colleague and had a great time. Almost didn't notice the Covid safety measures. Definitely in place, but so slick it was like a normal (albeit quiet) night. Food was fantastic, staff were fantastic. What more could you ask for?

Well first one I tried on Mon 3rd Aug 2020 (First Eat Out to Help Scheme).I opted for the 3 courses for £20 from the menu,Starter - Chicken & chorizo risotto frites,Main - Steak Sandwich, Dessert - Sticky Toffee Pudding (They where out of one of the others I had asked for)Great deal for £10 and all tasted fantastic! :-)Second meal was on Wednesday 5th August 2020, where I just ordered the main of the Sirloin Steak & garlic potatoes , which was cooked to perfection (medium to well) again tasted great and fantastic deal.Third and last meal of the week was on Friday 7th August 2020 where I went for the Fish & Fries. Again all done first class and bursting with flavour.Three great meals in one week and the kitchen never let down once. Great work!Great Staff, Food & Service :-) A must for anyone!

Great food, wonderful service from Mirek-great wine(New Zealand S.V. BLC) and menu recomendations. Felt very safe with Covid regulations in place within the bar.Will be back!

Food was amazing, wait times were minimal, prices resonable and served by Mirek who was an absoloute gentleman, topped off by social distancing being observed perfectly and great measures taken for everyones safety. Would recommend.

We stayed here for a few hours with a big group of friends, including a baby and child. Staff were very accommodating and helpful. Food and drinks were good. Great spot near the warm fire on a cold winder day.

Called in Tuesday afternoon for a bit of lunch and to be completely honest I wish I had went to McDonald’s around the corner. Waited exactly an hour after ordering our food til it arrived COLD. How hard is it to serve 2 steak sandwiches & fries !! A customary sorry about that from a member of staff and he took them away.Both were quickly replaced and arrived in about 5 mins or so but not cooked as we had asked but we ate what we could paid our bill and left.Poor Food & Poor customer service from a well established restaurant in Belfast.

As frequent visitors to Belfast this is mine and my husbands favourite place to go.My husband and I visited this time with my dad and his fiancee for dinner and drinks. The atmosphere staff and food as always were excellent given the current situation.I can't remember names however; there's a door man around 5ft 3/5ft 5 grey hair he's the kindest door man I've met and on previous visits when my husband and I have walked passed he's recognised us. This is a first class service and he's a man I won't forget (i'm the Scottish girl)The staff were so accommodating during our visit and joined in with the craic where possible.The gent who served us was also second to none, even fixing my dads mistake of ordering the wrong bottle of wine, again unsure of his name, he's a bigger lad with a beard.The Whig will always be our favourite place and I can't wait to be back to "normal" when we come to visit Belfast enjoying a few to many cocktails great food and great craic.

We booked our table 2 weeks beforehand! Love here for lunch and have to say we were a little dubious about venturing out for food. Needn't have worried at all. We were given a warm and pleasant welcome by a young bar man (unfortunately didn't catch his name) He explained the layout very well, how it was a one way system if we used the bathroom. We were given a disposable menu and although they're doing a limited one there was still a good choice.Service was of course friendly and efficient. Hubby got his long awaited and perfectly poured Guinness .Good food as usual. Goats cheese tart was nice.. Fish and chips, lush, hubby loved his chicken burger and even though we were both stuffed, we had to have a sticky toffee pudding between us... Gorgeous!! All in all it was a lovely afternoon and 1hr and 45mins is enough. Loved it.. Look forward to our next trip

We´ve spent a very nice afternoon in Northern Whig. Food was delicious. We were served by Mirek, right man on the right place. Very nice guy and very helpful.

Any concerns on going out post lockdown were allayed immediately on arrival. Friendly, clear instructions on post lockdown protocols on arrival and then straight into an evening of fantastic service and great food. Food was top drawer, loved the chicken and chorizo starter and my medium rare steak was cooked perfectly. Can’t wait to get back. Well done to all !

Friday 4th July 2020 - First meal out after lockdown and a few Guinness to wash it down.Door man/staff all excellent showing you the hand sanitizer stations & one way system. Was pretty much the same type of menu as pre-lockdown albeit some items less.Starter was the chicken & chorizo frites, followed by the paprika chicken burger with garlic suttee potatoes. All table service with a friendly smile.In all great time out and happy to see all safety measures are in place from entry to exit to restrooms Will certainly be back again soon.

Dinner tonight with my wife Lynda, first since lockdown. Food and service excellent as per usual. My wife loves it,roll on next week.

In for dinner tonight and some of the black stuff, as per the last time, really nice served by friendly staff, feedback would be, one potato cake with more chorizo in it would be plenty and don’t put the sauce over the lovely crisp skin

Went to the Northern Whig twice in the space of a few weeks and was treated so incredibly well by the charismatic and charming Mirek. He is an absolute gem. The food was incredibly tasty, large portions (never a problem!) of great food -sincere compliments to the chef in both cases (Sunday lunch and Saturday evening). Already looking forward to next visit.

So It being Belfast Restaurant Week thought I’d call back in on Tuesday 18th February 2020, to try their lunch menu two courses for £10 including a soft drink.For starters Baby short rib meatballs - very tasty and could have eaten more! But hey still had the main to go.For that I opted for the Sizzling chicken satay, pak choi, baby corn frites with sticky coconut rice.Really good choice, sizzling chicken in it’s own hot square skillet, the sauce was excellent and all went down a treat.Just a pity I could not get in any other day that week to try a few other things off the menu as both lunch/evening looked very enticing and well priced.Will be back again soon to try some more dishes :-)

When I previewed this menu about one and a half weeks ago I was so out of sorts with such a delectable choice of dishes.I eventually made my choice,Sizzling Crispy Duck stir fry followed by sticky toffee pudding with ice cream.Visions of crispy duck marinated in soy sauce,pure nectar.Having taken our seats my colleague and I were served up with a plate composed of a bowl of rice,a rocket and orange sauce.Wait for it, pardon the pun,everyone else I.e 14 at the two tables,12 of whose dishes were served up before there was any sign of a mallard falling from the sky.Low and behold after a 10 minute interlude the sizzling skillet arrived with what looked like a very appetizing combination.The dish looked very inviting and I ventured to transfer some of the food onto my lukewarm plate.Struggling with the quantity of noodles and the slipping and sliding with the fork,I almost lost the will to live.As Sir Rod Stewart sang "The first cut is the deepest",my illusions of grandeur and my taste buds were shattered.My first mouthful of the dish was mind blowing and my tongue was on fire,the fierness of the dish destroyed any taste buds I ever had were gone with the wind.When I watch professional chef's mentoring their understudys it is engrained in them to taste,taste,taste.The chef on station today clearly didn't.I am not a vegetarian but I think that I came very close to a duckless towering inferno.That aside the staff were excellent and deserve a round of applause.Maybe chef could consider another vocation,noodles and rice together,are you having a giraffe!

Monday night can be a bit of a food desert and to be honest I wasn't sure what I fancied, but glad I went into Northern Whig, as a as a curious eater (not vegetarian, anyway who don't want a label) tried the Beyond Meat burger. I have worked in the burger industry, so have eaten many 1000s of burgers, but must say I was impressed with this and would happily order it again - very tasty. Service by Shanna was great too

Great Guinness and fabulous Sunday singer/guitarist. Didn’t have time to eat here, but what we saw looked fab. Guinness was a perfect serve and staff v friendly.

Food was delicious, service was brilliant. I couldn’t decide which beer I wanted. The bar guys including a female encouraged me to taste lots before I choose. I spilt food down my silk blouse. The waiter Mirek was excellent.He decided tonic water a was the best solution,To take away the stain. Excellent food, drinks and service.

Truly brilliant experience in the Northern Whig Food was totally amazing especially the steak sandwich Great service on both occasions by Patrick Lisa and Shanna and Craig 🙂

We would frequently eat here as a couple. The bar area is spacious and has a vast drink selection to include great beers (Estrella on tap, yum!) It also includes a fantastic cocktail menu. The restaurant area is lovely and decor is very inviting.

Dropped in for a 3 course seasonal celebration, it was nice for what it was, basic pub grub type of food, nothing that was out of this world, but not bad by any means.

Me acabo de dar cuenta de que lo revisé por última vez en 2011 y ha cambiado un poco desde entonces, pero en realidad sigue siendo muy bueno. Si vas a tomar un grupo más tarde en la semana, definitivamente tendrás que reservar, pero este fue un lunes, y afortunadamente todo estuvo bien (aunque descubrí que cuando reuní a mi grupo, ya es tarde en términos de tiempo de pedido aquí) )

The beyong burger was succulent, delicious and very filling. The kerula curry was so full of flavour and delicious they are a must. Our waiter Mirek was good fun and excellent for service, would come again.

Nos recomendaron este lugar y sin duda tuvimos una comida canny. Pero, simplemente faltaba algo para hacerlo genial, tal vez estábamos buscando algo más de un sabor irlandés, pero era el tipo de menú que puedes encontrar en cualquier lugar. Pero el servicio era bueno, era un establecimiento bien diseñado y todavía disfrutamos de nuestra noche.

Mi esposa y yo visitamos aquí y tuvimos una excelente comida y algunas bebidas. La camarera Shanna fue excelente, muy amable y siempre sonriente y nada era un problema para ella. En la comida que ambos tuvimos entrantes, tuve las albóndigas veganas que eran muy agradables y mi esposa tenía los rollitos de primavera de vegetales que estaban muy bien. Luego tuve la mejor hamburguesa vegetariana con batatas fritas y algunas salsas y fue genial. Mi esposa tenía las costillas a la barbacoa y realmente las disfrutó y no pudo terminarlas ya que había bastantes. En general, excelente comida y servicio y ambiente. Volveré.

Was in for a drink about 6ish asked for a menu after 7. My partner spoke to member of staff who said food didn't stop to 8.30 - 9. When I asked for a table for two at 7.15 was told kitchen was closed then 5 people came in and sat down were handed menus. When I asked about this was told they were booked. I would like to know why we were unable to get a table for two. Only 1 member of staff was quite rude about the whole thing. So annoyed as the food has been recommended

We've been dining here off and on for years: falling in and out of love with the Menu or service, but we were pleasantly reminded recently, of why we keep going back. The Craic has always been good but the food has had its ups and downs: not so this time. The Moroccan Lamb, though it wasn't called that, was the tastiest I have ever had and encourage me to return, so as to try out loads of other dishes on what is probably their most diverse Menu ever.

Food was very nice and good value for money. 3rd year we have been here for works dinner. Have been here on a Friday night too for drinks and always has a bit of decent music.

Was out for dinner with friends tonight for our annual Christmas get together, we picked here because of the vegan menu online that suited two of our guests, one being vegan and one having an allergy to dairy products.

Exceptional food, drinks and service bar one waitress/barmaid with poor eyebrows, attitude and hygiene! I will never ever be back here because of one girl which is a let down to your establishment. Was so rude to my friend who then answered her back to hear ‘I will see you outside after’ sack this jumped up girl or your business will suffer. My rating reflects my experience due to this problem only

Out as a group for Christmas dinner and enjoyed our 3 courses. Prawns, lamb and cheese board were very tasty

I was with a party of 4 last night 8th December for a Christmas night out. Unfortunately the rest of our party were unable to make it due to illness but this wasn’t a problem and we were seated at a smaller table. However our table was right in the path of a freezing cold draught every time the side door into Waring street opened and closed which as the bar was busy, was every few minutes! I ended up having to put my coat round me which wasn’t the look I was going for! Service was pleasant and good though my complaints about being cold were ignored. We had pre chosen our menu and our food arrived quite quickly. The starters were tasty and mostly well presented though my choice of smoked salmon and prawns though tasty was just piled on a plate and the smoked salmon was just tiny shreds mixed in with the prawns. The other starters looked good and my friends enjoyed theirs. However my main course and that of one of my friends weren’t quite as expected. She had ordered the lamb tomahawk which turned out to be two small lamb cutlets and my pork medallions definitely weren’t the expected pork fillet, not sure which cut they were but very tough and chewy and covered in far too much sauce - maybe to hide the fact that the meat definitely wasn’t pork medallions! The other two meals didn’t disappoint though and looked tasty. The desserts were ok. There was also a mix up with the bill when we were presented with two separate bills, one for the food and drink and another one for the drink which was already on the food bill but this was sorted out easily. Staff were really friendly and helpful though and our evening was enjoyable enough but the food was just ok and nothing special.

I visited the Northern Whig with 6 others on Sunday 1 December 2019. It was lively, lots of people, buzzing with chatter. The live music was of a poor quality, and much too loud. It was equally loud when it was recorded music. We asked twice to have it turned down, which happened eventually.

In Belfast for a long weekend. Not sure where to eat on a very busy Friday evening and happened across The Northern Whig. The place was full and heaving but Mirek found us the perfect table and looked after us all evening. My wife and I each had the Korean chicken which was just wonderful, perfect for what we wanted. With a couple of drinks it made an evening to remember. Thanks Mirek!!

We came here for a friends birthday and had a cocktail making class and dinner. The cocktail making class was brilliant and Paddy the barman was fantastic!! The dinner which was from the Christmas menu was delicious and service was great (even though it was busy). Portion sizes did not disappoint as there was plenty on our plates.
