No 5 Restaurant in Bassetlaw

Went there for the first time the other day. Food was beautiful and the wait for the food wasn’t long at all staff was so kind a welcoming the restaurant has such a cozy and homely atmosphere highly recommend. Thankyou for a great evening no. 5

Returned for the 2nd time to No5 and decided on the 2 courses for £15 menu, it was lovely, mushrooms were great as a starter and the shepherds pie was exceptional as well. My friend had the chicken as a main and again loved it! Definitely a great local restaurant, the ladies were very friendly and attentive, couldn’t do enough for you

Returned for a second visit having sampled the 2 courses for 2 people for £30 in February. Once again the food was great and exceptional value. Staff are lovely too. Would definitely recommend. We will certainly be back.

We had high hopes of this restaurant and this was in large part due to reviews we had seen here so when my son and husband told me that I was being taken for Mother’s Day I was quite happy. My son and I arrived first while my husband parked which we explained he would b joining us in a moment or two, we were then shown to our table. We were given menus as we sat and told that someone would come to take orders in a moment, my husband had literally just sat down when a waitress arrived to take our order, having not had a chance to even look at the drinks menu it was lucky that my husband only wanted a tonic water and we ordered soft drinks while we looked at the food menu before deciding which wine to order. We did have to request that they not take the wine menu away and it was clear that they would have preferred we ordered all drinks at the same time, they did allow us to keep a wine menu. Shortly after this someone else arrived to take food orders, again, barely a moment to look at menus but not wanting to be a problem we all tried to pick something on the spot. Our drinks arrived promptly and although were not what we ordered, it wasn’t a big problem. We ordered Coke Zero and were served Diet Coke, it’s not worth a fuss and although I don’t actually like Diet Coke on its own (too sweet for me) we were ordering wine so I figured I’d just drink that and my husband could have the Diet Coke as he was driving. Our starters arrived very quickly and although I must admit that it wasn’t quite what I was expecting based on the menu description - Baked feta with honey, cherry tomatoes & sesame, served with toasted bread - the toasted bread had been substituted with half a warm cob and it was all a bit, well, soggy. It looked ok though and was perfectly edible, nothing special but certainly not worth a complaint. We did find it a little disconcerting that our plates were whipped out from under us the second we had placed cutlery down but again, not worth complaining. Our main meals arrived moments later. Two roast sirloin and one lamb. I have to say I was rather taken aback that the vegetables consisted of a cereal bowl with some carrots, green beans, one small floret of cauliflower and 2 of broccoli between 3 people. Thankfully the waitress offered to bring another serving of veg. Just as well really because apart from carrots there was only a single serving of the other veg. This is where things took a definite downturn. We sat waiting for quite a while for the vegetables to arrive, which were literally dropped on the table and the waitress dashed off before we had a chance to request condiments. This is by the by though as the bigger problem was the food. The ‘Yorkshire puddings’ were tiny masses of soggy, stodgy, batter that were somehow brown in colour. The roast potatoes, well, in truth I honestly thought that they were some sort of confit potato for a start, the shape and size certain resembled those more than roast potatoes. They were also quite soggy, nothing like roast potatoes. There was a shrivelled soggy parsnip, at least I think it was, it’s hard to be sure as it was so tiny. All of this was served on a strange long thin rectangular plate with a tiny pot of gravy that was a near solid mass. The fare from the cereal bowls of “seasonal veg” was not without fault, the carrots were a little undercooked but ok for me, the cauliflower was raw, broccoli similar, beans were ok, al dente. The biggest issue was the beef. I’ve had beef cooked to perfection, I’ve had beef cooked badly. What I have never encountered is what I can only describe as powdery beef, it was somehow devoid of beef flavour, had a texture of powder and was at the same time soggy. I mean it looked ok, it was just inedible. We tried to get the attention of a waitress for a long time, it was really beyond a joke especially considering how rushed we were when we first arrived. We were now being completely ignored. My son commented a few times that if they hadn’t taken his coat he would have just walked out. We eventually managed to get the attention of a waitress, not because they were paying attention but because by this point my son was threatening to get up and go and fetch his coat himself and just walk out so I raised my voice quite firmly. Even then, despite agreeing to bring coat and bill we still ended up sitting there with two uneaten meals in front of us and empty glasses for an unreasonably long time before it became so very annoying that I just said that I’d wait outside. If I had remained in there I would have not been able to keep my calm and with so many other families in there I really didn’t want to spoil anyone else’s day. I’m still astounded that any restaurant could completely ignore diners like that and serve such poor food. There really was nothing positive about our visit and despite the many good views from other people I can not recommend anywhere that would act in this way, there is no excuse at all. No apologies, not even an enquiry about virtually uneaten meals.

Our 3rd trip here in as many months - and it never disappoints! This week we took advantage of the new '2 courses for 15quid' menu. Wonderful. Fabulous value, the portion size was perfect, and the food was (as always) beautiful. Thanks once again to No.5 for a great night out with good food and excellent service.

Wonderful meal and ambience. My first visit and it won’t be the last. Food delicious. Pork belly superb. Great value. The lamb burger also delish as tasted from my dining companion. Good luck and keep up the great work.

Easily the best restaurant in Retford. From the friendly and personal welcome to the excellent service we couldn’t fault our visit. The extensive menu and the superb cuisine never fail to impress, so pleased that the change of ownership hasn’t spoiled the experience. Would recommend this little gem to anyone. P.S. just come back from France and the coquille St Jacques was better than any we found there.

We went on Tuesday night as we'd heard of the new menu that offered two course for two people for £30. The food was delicious, the service was attentive. Added on 3 drinks one of which was alcoholic and the price barely scratched £40. Comfy surroundings added to this and definitely recommend.

WOW!! My partner and I went for an anniversary meal here, and ‘perfection’ is an understatement. Service 10/10 Food 10/10 Atmosphere 10/10 We are vegetarians and have never been somewhere to eat that has a menu specifically for vegetarians. It was a lovely surprise and the choice certainly was not limited. We had lots to choose from, and what we did choose was incredible! The staff were amazing, attentive, very polite, pleasant and welcoming. To top off all of the above, the atmosphere was traditional and cosy. We will be returning!

Lovely ambience and great food, we came out to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The staff were lovely, the food tasty and very reasonably priced. We both ate from the market menu, £32 for three courses. My husband is a vegetarian and they had a good selection of options, a great place to have a lovely meal.

Absolutely fantastic, highly recommended. I Came in this evening for mine & my partner’s anniversary and from the entrance we were greeted with jolly, attentive staff asking to take our coats, excited to seat us. The food was absolutely exceptional and the atmosphere was very romantic and festive. We will definitely be coming again and would like to thank the staff for a great evening.

My partner suggested us visiting this restaurant & it didn’t disappoint. Our experience was nothing short of perfect. From the waitressing staff, to the environment & the dinner itself. I choose the mushroom starter, pork belly main & crème brûlée dessert & every bit of it was sublime! We actually think No.5 should be the highest rated restaurant in Retford. We’re going back again with my partners’ family in a few weeks because we’d like them to experience this masterpiece. If you haven’t been then I cannot recommend this place enough. Genuinely one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Perfect price point too. Thank you to everybody involved at No.5 for making our date night so perfect.

What a great idea for our family to decide that our usual 'pre-Christmas' family lunch this year would be too much for me to handle by myself, now we have different family requirements. Pleased that I didn't let my pride say no thank you ! We had a tremendous evening with NO complaints , even grumbles . To achieve that with the 12 of us ranging from 7 years old to 83 , and including vegetarian, coeliac, vegan . . and 'picky'. was nothing short of amazing.The menus were very attractive with something there for everyone, recognisable ingredients, nothing scary for the' pickers', but presented with imagination. Having covered most of the choices we could all feel that we spoke with a good degree of authority !The management and staff were very friendly and knowlegeable, keeping an eye quietly on what we needed, and efficiently dealing with any requests.All of this was excellentt but we had to admit that the 'star of the show' was the food itself. Quality and quantity - both without even a murmer, except maybe to marvel at the quantity of the dishes. Too busy enjoying each mouthful.So, yes, we enjoyed our evening. What an understatement ! My husband and I have been here twice in the last 3 weeks and on both occasions we have been so Impressed with the whole visit. The food was delicious, crab cakes, salmon and prawns to name a couple of our choices, and the pork belly was to die for!!! I recommend a visit here, especially for a special occasion. Everything about our evening was wonderful; we were greeted warmly and allowed space and time to be comfortable. The service was sincere and friendly but always professional. The owner was very attentive and welcoming and made our evening perfect. Our food (scallops, steak and stroganoff plus dessert selection) was cooked perfectly and we went home feeling as though it had been a thoroughly personal and thoughtful evening laid in just for us. Four of us dined on Wednesday 8th, given a very warm welcome by the staff on entering and seated straight away , given menus and offered drinks. Our menu orders were taken with no problems encountered. The meal flowed wonderfully, 3 for the crabcakes and one salmon and prawns together with a plate of olives and bread with balsamic oil. For the mains we had one having belly pork[huge portion done to a T], one pork calvados looking a real picture, salmon with capers and prawns and another having sirloin steak with all the trimmings.....superb. Three of us had desserts, once again beautifully presented. Can't fault this place, the staff were attentive with drinks throughout the meal and making sure we had everything that was needed. we will be back soon.

It was by pure accident that I ended up eating here but it’s good enough to travel to - and I live in Worcestershire ! What a fantastic experience - fantastic food and service led by a true professional. I don’t understand why anyone could find fault with this place.

Our last visit to No5 was last August with all the covid things going off. So it was lovely to be able to go again and we wasn't disappointed. The staff in there are polite and are very attentive We both had 3 course and all of them were lovely. Well cooked and well presented . Another superb meal at No5 -this time to celebrate mother in laws birthday - been to this gorgeous restaurant a few times for special family occasions and they never fail to serve exquisite meals with excellent service - almost don’t want to share how fantastic it is as want to keep it to ourselves but that would be super selfish as it really is fine dining with wonderful hosts - the food is outstanding - the interior is divine and the ambience of the restaurant is right up our street - so relaxed and very welcoming - I have to recommend to everyone as once you’ve been you will go again and again - compliments to the chef And Thankyou once again for another fine evening

Everything about this restaurant is good. I have visited on a number of occasions. The welcome is always very friendly. The environment is warm and smart. The food of a high standard. This week I have really enjoyed Pork in Calvados & Sticky Toffee Pudding on one night and Pork Calvados and Tiramisu on the following night. Back tomorrow to enjoy the Roasted Duck with Grand Marnier Sauce. Good wines by the glass. This week I have been enjoying No 5 on my own whilst on business, but it would be an excellent place to visit for a special occasion.

we had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant for my wife’s birthday, right from the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was fantastic and a special shout out to the owner who waived our pre meal drinks as were celebrating my wife’s birthday. also well done to the young lad who was being trained as a waiter.all in all a lovely meal in a lovely atmosphere with lovely staff. will absolutely be visiting again.

I honestly couldn't find any fault with this outstanding little treasure. Crab cakes with a chilli dip, wonderful, belly port, huge, perfectly cooked, and a tiramisu to finish. My partner had the chicken liver and black truffle starter, again superb, belly pork and finished with lemon cheesecake. Add a beer and a bottle of pretty decent wine and the whole lot came to under £75!If I lived here this would be on my regular eats list, and it's worth travelling for.At the time of writing (September 2020) they had appropriate Covid-19 practice which made for a very safe, and very comfortable dining experience.

We went to this charming restaurant in Retford town centre last night. It was our first visit and although it entailed a long drive, it was certainly worth the trip! The restaurant is situated in a Georgian style house and is decorated to suit this, with brocade wallpapers, chandeliers and lots of pretty ornaments. There are three dining areas, two downstairs and one upstairs, and all are very attractive. We chose starters of coquilles St Jacques, and scallops with black pudding. For main courses we had sea bass fillets with king prawns and cream sauce, and cod loin with chorizo and broad beans in a balsamic sauce. Desserts included Eton mess, white chocolate creme brûlée and a cheeseboard with a lovely selection of five cheeses. The restaurant is fully licensed and we enjoyed pre dinner G&Ts and Black Sheep ale. We had a bottle of Pinot Grigio with the meal and coffee afterwards.We were very well looked after by knowledgeable staff, who were attentive without being intrusive. Many thanks to everyone - we hope to be able to dine with you again soon!

As most im quick to write bad reviews but the experience we had here tonight was faultless..I could list service, food, atmosphere and so forth but everything got top marks..We have eaten in all classes of restaurants including michelin star and this place was quite a surprise.Lovely for couples and the scallops were quite possibly the best I've had.Keep up the good work and great service!

Our first night out after Lockdown was to this restaurant. after weeks of not going anywhere I was very apprehensive but everything was well thought out. I felt safe as soon as I walked in. Went with hubby, step son and his girlfriend. We had a fabulous evening. The food was wonderful, well presented and tasted amazing. Staff were on hand to keep the boys well lubricated! but they were not overpowering, just very polite and friendly. None of us could manage a sweet but we will return very soon and make sure we leave room for one. All in all this is an exceptional restaurant and a real gem in our small town

Our Family Favourite!This is our first choice restaurant for a nice place to go to celebrate. We visited on Friday evening to celebrate my Graduation and the food was superb. We had the pate to start and then it had to be the belly pork for main. A special thanks to Kaz - as always she was attentive and went above and beyond to make our dining out experience amazing

we have been coming here for some months now..We were in again on Saturday night and it's just such a wonderful restaurant the atmosphere is very relaxing and the food is beautiful especially the fillet steak but what makes this restaurant stand out is its staff ..And especially the manager wonderful warm and amazing..We have booked for Christmas with our foster children and we cant wait..Definitely the best restaurant in Retford with staff that treat you like old friends..Definitely my favourite place to eat ..Thankyou so much for making us feel so welcome Jon and Tracy xxx

This is the second time we have visited No. 5 and the meal was as good as last time. We also brough a friend with us for a special meal out. We all ate off of the Market Menu. The a la carte menu also looks really good but we just fancied some of the options on the Market menu better, although you are welcome to mix-and-match. For starters we had the scallops, crab cakes and pate. For mains my wife and friend went for the Pork Calvados. I had the Steak and Mushroom Pie. To finish I had the Tiramisu and my wife and friend went for the Sticky Toffee Pudding. All food was served promptly and the hot food was nice and hot. Portion sizes were just right. We came away feeling full but not overly so. The staff are very attentive and will dealt with any queries professionally. I have a garlic aversion so they made a special sauce for my starter without garlic in. All-in-all a lovely meal and we will return.

We visited No 5 for the first time yesterday for my wife's birthday after seeing the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. A nice choice of food on both an a-la-carte and market menu. We both decided to go for the Market Menu as we preferred some of the choices on this menu, although we could have mixed-and-matched off both menus. Service was exceptional, very prompt and attentive staff who made sure everything was to our satisfaction. I have a garlic aversion and staff made sure everything was OK with my order. We both very much enjoyed our meal and will definitely be returning. It was my wife's birthday so thank you for helping to make it a very memorable day.

We’ve always had a family Christmas at home but decided this year to treat ourselves and have Christmas Day lunch at No5. What a fabulous day. From walking through the door to leaving we felt very welcome. The food was great. 6 courses and not one of our party had any issues. The food was served at a pleasant pace and of a high standard. Nothing was too much trouble. We’ve already put our names down for 2020. Thank Kaz to you and all your staff for a superb day and look forward to seeing you soon. Great to support a local restaurant. I cannot praise this restaurant enough. We have been 3 years in succession for a Christmas lunch with work friends from London who regularly dine in some of the so called ‘finest’ restaurants in the capital. They too cannot praise No. 5 highly enough and look forward each year to travelling here to enjoy fabulous food and perfect hospitality. The staff, the food, and the welcome is second to none and if you have never been then go, and if you have been then go again. Most restaurants who do not open lunch time and do not open on a Monday would thank us for our enquiry, but politely decline especially at this time of year. No. 5 do not hesitate and open especially for us (we are only a group of about 12), and even remember the names of our guests from one year to the next - superb attention to detail. A gem of a place!

Visited No. 5 for the first time and it certainly won’t be the last. We had a friendly welcome into a lovely room, tastefully furnished and decorated. The service throughout the evening was impeccable, the food delicious, just a shame we didn’t have room for a dessert, maybe next time. We can definitely recommend No. 5 in Retford.

Had a meal last night at no 5 in retford,my boyfriend had salmon and prawns,and I had crackling belly pork,potatoes and veg.Both meals were excellent,staff were professional and the ambiance was just right.Ended the meal with a lovely bottle of white wine.We will visit again ,the next time we are in retford .Keep up the good work x

First time here for us since the new owners what a fantastic difference and a massive improvement from the old Italian, We came here for my wife's birthday we had a very warm welcoming as we were taken to are table we both had the scallop starter a lovely take on the dish accompanied with black pudding,slice of streaky bacon with a duck egg, followed by two filets of sea bass and my wife had the roast duck then we shared a tiramisu appsurluty fantastic we had a great time the staff could not do enough for you. We highly recommend this restraunt and will definitely return.

No bright lights or large billboards advertise this restaurant and you would think it was just a town house rather than a restaurant which is part of its charm. We had spotted it when returning to the car park from a visit to another Retford restaurant and decided to try it. What an excellent find, the staff gave us a friendly welcome showing us to our table.There was no rush and the waitress came back and took our drink requests and we only had a short wait before the drinks were delivered. We were then given time to make our choices from a varied menu. Both the starters we selected and the mains were excellent although my wife found the main a little too much, so much so that neither of us had room for one of there desserts. This restaurant is definitely on the list for future visits.

Absolutely beautiful food and service. Would definitely recommend. We had the belly pork which was cooked to perfection. Homemade fries, lovely veg.

Fantastic , my first visit to no5 as a vegan so didn’t know what to expect I had emailed the chef who was helpful on the night just brill, had the garlic mushrooms and wild mushroom risotto which was just delicious my husband is a vegetarian and there was just a slight hitch with his main to which they promptly sent out olives and bread and a bottle of wine for him while they just finished off. No problems at all lovely service from all and compliments to Andy the chef Thankyou very much for our lovely meal we will be back very soon

Me and my wife went on a Saturday night with a group of friends, we had a hiccup which was my main was MIA, but they honestly could not do enough to rectify it and when it did arrive it was sublime, my wife is a vegan and when she informed the waitress again nothing was to much trouble, the staff were fabulous

So we went here for my partners 30th birthday (but they didn’t know) and the whole evening was great! The service was outstanding and the food was amazing! Can’t believe we have never been before - it’s definitely a place for special occasions! Be back soon!

Have just got back from a wonderful meal in this warm welcoming restaurant. Best meal I have had for a very long time. The coquilles St Jacques, ribs and stroganoff were superb as were the desserts of deconstructed banoffee pie and brandy snap basket.

The booking times at 15 minute intervals gave staff time to deal with each arrival efficiently and with a smile. The food was great we had one a la carte and one st menu, both were superb with ample portion, The whole experience was very enjoyable and we will return soon.

Dined with 3 friends and had wonderful welcome as always such an attractive restaurant had a selection from set menu wonderful crisp belly of pork and salmon with prawns and capers Service was very good and friendly another super visit will be back when next in Nottinghamshire

What an absolute outstanding place from the second you walk through the door you are greeted by a genuine smiling face and made to feel very welcome.The menu was not huge but still a great choice of freshly cooked food that was bursting with flavour and impeccably presented. I would highly recommend No5 restaurant to all and I will definitely be returning very soon .

When you approach No5 restaurant and see the house style frontage you expect when you walk in for the environment to be very different but it is kept on style and makes for a lovely surrounding for dinner.

My husband and I were looking for a nice restaurant to visit to celebrate a special occasion. We found No 5 on trip advisor and were impressed with the reviews. We were blown away with the quality of the food and the prices are exceptional. The staff were all very friendly and attentive to our needs. We will definitely be returning even though it’s quite a way for us, it is worth the drive.

Went tonight 5th April 2019 booked for 700 pm was slightly early, no problem, shown straight to table warm welcome food good, in fact portions were too much for me. Would definitely return, not first time we been and won’t be the last.

We went to No5 again, the service (as usual) was great, the food was delicious.

Second time here not disappointed lovely place great food and all 4 of us had a different main course every one very happy I can see this been our regular place keep up the good work

This was the third time my friend and I have eaten here we ate early as we were going to the theatre, both the service and the food were amazing we both chose the beef stroganoff which is one of my favourite dishes and we were not disappointed the deserts were superb as well we had banoffe pie. There is also a market menu where you pay one price and choose three courses, we might try that next time if I can tear myself away from the stroganoff

The food is consistently of a very high standard. The combinations of flavours are superb. Make sure you're hungry before you go because everything is so delicious you'll want at least 3 courses. Portion size is generous,using local ingredients everything is cooked fresh to order. They are happy to accomodate special diets and intolerance. It is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users as it is a a Grade 2 listed building.

THIS RESTAURANT IS VERY GOOD FOR COELIAC, a very good selection of glutten free food , the party I was with had a very good meal .the staff were very nice, will be back .

Went with a party of eight for my wife,s birthday had the upstairs table excellent food staff very nice and very reasonably priced good portions and first class food would recommend this great place.

Was told about this place by friends and friends of friends and no one saying a bad word about it! Taken me quite a while to sort a visit out but how right they were, could not be faulted in any way shape or form, or if I was to criticise it would be "please don't fill a menu with so many choices that I can't decide"

Little gem of a place. Lovely inside, staff attentive and the food amazing! Would def go back!! Highly recommend ☺️
