8 friends had dinner here. Service and food was all extremely good. Hubby and myself had Angel fillets of haddock with mussel sauce with veg and a side order of chips. Lovely. 2 Friends had: chicken stuffed with haggis, 1 had beef burger. 1 had Breaded haddock and chips. I can’t remember what the remaining 2 had but suffice to say all good was good and no complaints. We would go again.

What a fantastic little gem. We visited recently as we had a friend visiting from Sussex. Booked in for 7.30pm and as soon as we walked in the door we received a great welcome and shown to our lovely table. Everything you needed but not too much. The restaurant was clean and very presentable with a certain coziness. We had all three courses. Butterfly prawns and haddock goujons, served with salad and dips were our starters. We then had burgers and haddock and chips again served with a lovely salad and dips. Out desserts were knickerbocker glory, a trio of ice cream and sticky toffee pudding. To be honest, we all agreed that, all the dishes were absolutely superb, and the best meal out that we had had for a very long time. Fantastic food, fantastic service and a fantastic place for a meal. They are not licensed, so be sure to take your own alcohol. They do serve soft drinks however.

Travelling around the area and wanted a restaurant and about to give up and head back up to Girvan when we came across No 4 in Newton Stewart. Stopped and when we saw it was quiet to be honest wondered what we had walked into. No need for the trepidation our waitress was knowledgeable and courteous and soon had us at our ease. 2 x Chicken Pate's, 1 large battered fish and chips and one good size Ribeye Steak and veggies later very pleasantly replete (oh and room for a Sticky Toffee pudding that was as light as air) Very well worth the impromptu stop and if you are in the area give it a try, 5.30-8.30, Wednesday to Saturday https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g316000-d8114045-r850712760-No_4-Newton_Stewart_Dumfries_and_Galloway_Scotland.html#

We've just had a lovely meal at No.4 from their midweek special menu of 3 courses for £16.95 (or 2 courses for £13.95). It was very quiet tonight, but the waitress was friendly & attentive but not intrusive & all 3 courses were freshly cooked & very tasty. The midweek offer is limited to 4 main courses but there are other specials on the board. No. 4 are not licenced but ask you to bring your own alcohol, making the meal even better value without the inevitable mark-up on wine. Definitely worth giving this restaurant a try!

The food we had was very nice but some of the clientele took the bring your own bottle idea to excess. We were there on a Saturday evening and there were groups of very loud customers who had brought substantial quantities of wine and beer and got very boisterous. I had chicken breast stuffed with haggis with a really tasty sauce. The chicken was cooked perfectly - nice and hot but very juicy. It was a thick breast of chicken as that's hard to do. My daughter ordered chicken goujons off the kids menu. I tried hers and it was fresh chicken tenders fried with a nice crispy coating. Basically very delicious fried chicken. An adult would be happy with it and I was. Enough food to satisfy any child. We had warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The cake was warm and moist. Having balked at the prices elsewhere, we were delighted to stumble across this small, unprepossessing restaurant at one end of the High Street near the Cree Bridge. Our group of seven was made very welcome and the service was very good despite there already being a party of a dozen already ensconced there. In no time we were enjoying (soft) drinks and warm crusty bread and butter. The menu and specials on the board offered quite a variety of choices and a children's menu was also available. We chose duck breast with Hoi Sin sauce, battered haddock, steak, pasta carbonara, burgers and a fish fingers kid's meal. The food was excellent and nicely presented with generous portions. The bill for all this just about topped a tenner a head. At the time of our visit, the restaurant did not have a licence of facilities for card payment, but I imagine these are both in hand. We were delighted to have found this gem before our holiday was over. The inhabitants of the Newton Stewart area are fortunate to have such a lovely place to eat out!

Chose this restaurant based on other reviews. Located in the centre of Newton Stewart, this small eatery was easy to find. Cash only sign in door, might be a problem if the ATM in the nearby bank is out of order, but with cash in pocket, in we went. I had booked it the previous night and asked for the menu to be emailed which was done. Choice of 5 - 6 starters and mains, plus specials. On recommendation of Kelly, the attentive, chatty, and pleasant waitress, I chose the haggis starter which, never having eaten proper haggis before, was excellent and very moreish. OH had the pate which again was excellent. We both had the rib eye steak with king prawns from the specials menu, and both were cooked to perfection and prawns plentiful. The only slight criticism would be the chips which were from a packet as opposed to being hand prepared, but on the whole, the meal was great. Neither of us had a sweet. Would not hesitate to go back again, next time I'm passing.

This is another byob place in Newton Stewart, or you can have a can of pop with your dinner. The restaurant is small - around 20 covers. Pleasant neutral decor, but nothing fancy. The Enya CD on repeat was a bit depressing too. The food was generally good - prawn cocktail, soup, garlic bread were all polished off with the warm bread rolls and butter. The seafood specials looked interesting, but quite expensive - £23 for surf and turf. Our mains were varied - the wee man had pizza and chips. Good chips, frozen pizza with a lot of extra orange cheese on top. Not hard to serve a half decent pizza, but Newton Stewart has failed him this week. Duck was apparently very good - must have been because she didn't share it. My beer battered haddock and chips was first class, very very light batter on excellent fresh fish - lovely. The waitress was very friendly, our dinner was less than £50 and it was a two minute walk back to the cottage in a week of 30 or 50 mile drives

You need to be aware that No. 4 is unlicensed so you have to take your own alcoholic drinks (don't rely on the wine selection in Sainsburys in the town) and only takes cash. But having sorted booze and visited a cashpoint, you will be made very welcome at No. 4. When we went they had a good selection of fish specials on the board (although two had already sold out by 20:00) and a sensibly sized menu. I had the haggis to start which was excellent (maybe the sauce was a bit too runny... but that's onIy a minor quibble) and the rib-eye which was excellent. The others in the party were similarly impressed with the steak strips and whatever else they had. And the bill comes as a nice surprise...it make you realise how much you spend on before, during and after dinner drinks in licensed restaurants.

Started the evening off with the gf feeling extra cheeky walked into the place and was looking forward to some scran. We went on a Friday and the meal and atmosphere was electric , the food was really tasteful just like the staff (Gemma was her name) I had the surf and turf which was brilliant steak was cooked to perfection as was my partners sea bass. Overall my experience was a brilliant one and the 10/10 service from staff made it even better. I would highly recommend No.4 for a proper meal. As we were in town for a week and was impressed we returned on the Sunday for our lunch we both had the roast beef and it was melt in mouth delicious best beef I've ever had. No.4 is excellent and the best restaurant we visited in town.

This is a small but great place to eat. The menu is very good, I went for sea bass fresh in and it was lovely. Not sure if it's open all week, booking is probably advisable. Would eat there again.

I have been twice and it is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in the area. The duck was delicious! Would recommend it to everyone and it doesn't cost the earth.

A warm atmosphere like a private house. The menu was imaginative and the food excellent. But beware, the portions are enormous!

A good little restaurant that serves beautiful food. My favourite here is duck in the most amazing hoi sin sauce I have ever tasted! We have tried a number of dishes and have not been disappointed. The staff are very pleasant and attentive and the added bonus is you take your own alcohol here so overall it works out cheaper. The only downside (and it's usually when duck is being cooked) is that the restaurant can get a little stifey as the extractors aren't strong enough to prevent it coming down the corridor from the kitchen. I know from cooking duck myself it is pretty much unavoidable if you want crispy skin, it wasn't it a big problem but it made the restaurant a little smokey. Worth it however for a lovely meal.

Fortunately we had driven past and spotted the 'Cash only' sign. What we didn't know was that it is unlicensed :( Prices here are on the high side and we expected cuisine to match. Pan-fried scallops had no hint of caramelisation but were still white and flabby. Chicken breast stuffed with black pudding was a huge portion, tasty and in a pool of sauce. On the whole we had a good meal but I feel reviews on here do slightly overrate.

Went here for on Thursday night and could not fault a thing the food and staff are both 5*! I had the duck breast with hoisin sauce on a bed of mash potato and it was absolutely beautiful! My partner had the fish and chips( more like a shark).. will definetly be back here as in my opinion best restaurant in the area.

Arrived 10 minutes before closing time on a Sunday, received a very warm welcome and was able to get the 'Sunday Lunch Special' The roast beef was cooked to perfection and helping was very generous. This recently opened restaurant deserves to succeed.

Called in on spec on a Saturday evening having just arrived in the area for a week's holiday. They managed to find a table for the three of us. We went straight to the main courses; I had duck with hoisin sauce over mashed potato which was delicious. Hubby & mother-in-law both had the sea bass which they said was excellent. We all had desserts, crème brulee with shortbread bics, chocolate fudge cake and ice cream special with fresh fruit. These were all extremely good. The service was good and the atmosphere cosy. Worth noting - they only take cash and they are not licensed for alcohol - but don't let that put you off! From the experience we had, we would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and would definitely use again if we lived locally.

We had spotted this little restaurant on our first night and decided that this would be our destination for Sunday dinner. We noted that it doesn’t open too late, I believe around 8.30pm it closes most days, 12.00-5.00pm on a Sunday. We didn’t get down till just after 4.00pm and we were the only ones in the restaurant. We were quickly greeted and seated.I went for the Beef Strips with chips (minus the onions and mushrooms), wife went for Roast Beef and the kids Sausage & Chips and Nuggets & Chips.Remember it’s doesn’t sell alcohol, but we were quite happy with the soft drinks on offer. It is also cash only, so don’t bother bringing your card.I wasn’t actually sure what to expect, as I usually stick to certain foods and when it came I did think, hmmm, the sauce I’m not sure about and wished I had decided on following the wife’s choice of Roast Beef which looked fab. However there was no need to worry, as the beef was lovely, as was the accompanying sauce and the chips were exceptionally good and was more than delighted with my choice. The wife absolutely loved her Roast Beef but not being the biggest eater was very annoyed with herself that she couldn’t eat the last slice of her beef (was served 3 large pieces). The kids were happy with their choices too and both finished off with an ice-cream even though it was now after 5pm (closing time) and they had already turned away quite a few people who obviously hadn’t noticed the closing time. The meal came to just over £43.00 which was great value I thought for what was splendid top notch food. The wife has already demanded we return if we get down to Newton Stewart, another Sunday Roast no doubt, but possibly another visit for Steak which I can actually just imagine will be fantastic too, although even though we are quite fussy eaters, the menu catered for us very easily with several choices. Can’t recommend the place highly enough, going by our first visit.

Having only just opened in May 2015 we only found this restaurant when we walked past. It was fully booked that evening so we reserved a table for the following Friday and were glad we did. The menu was varied but they also offered 3 to 4 specials for starters and mains which offered a great choice. For starters I opted for the smoked mussels in a whisky and garlic sauce whilst my wife went for the hand dived scallops. Both dishes were well cooked and extremely tasty. For mains we chose lemon sole and salmon fillet with black pudding in a pepper sauce. Once again both dishes were excellent. The service was friendly but 2 things of note; they only accept cash and do not have a licence so you need to bring your own bottle if you wish to have a glass of wine with your meal (the local off licence does a roaring trade!).
