Our first “real” meal out since lockdown, and what a treat! Sunday lunch, roast beef, so often a disappointment here was a delight. The scallop and black pudding starter, and key lime pie (very pleasantly looking “individual” not a slice) were both delicious. Excellent service, airy bright dining room and good value too. Thank you.

A delicious lunch in updated restaurant - great service, excellent choice of food - well cooked and presented. My wife had the scallops and black pudding (i tasted it - really great - black pudding was mouthwatering!) followed by the red bass (sea bass), new potatoes, samphire and rocket - “best sea bass i’ve ever tasted”, she said.I went for the mushroom ragu to start with - really good, followed by the ribeye - excellent!!To follow - the Bread & Butter pud delighted my wife, while the sticky toffee pudding with matching ice cream was a delight for me!!Thank you - we will return!

We were recommended No1 Fleet street by a friend so we decided to celebrate my wife's birthday here, so glad we did. We were warmly greeted at the door by a very friendly member of staff who's smile radiated beyond their covid mask, the covid regulations in place were very apparent....well done. We skipped the starters and decided on a main and sweet, I opted for the home made steak pie and it was truly delicious, piping hot and tender with melt in the mouth pastry, my wife opted for the venison burger which was a substantial portion and again delicious, both meals were served up with home made fries which made all the difference. We finished off with 2 zingy key lime pies which were just the ticket to end our meal. Really enjoyed this place, would have been better with a couple of glasses of vino but we will be back very shortly to put that right. 10/10 well done again and thank you.

Managed to secure a table at third attempt . Current distancing restrictions have cut the number of covers but restaurant still felt vibrant as it was full .The menu had many temting options but in the end we elected to go for the specials of dressed local crab and loin pork chop with various accompaniements , in hindsight we could probably have managed with just one of each as the portions were very generous , the pork especially so and we did end up taking a doggy bag away . Service was prompt and friendly and although the price is maybe higher than other venues in the area it was justified by the whole package offered.

I have already provided a review for the Ship Inn which included the highest praise for the food but felt I should submit a further review to emphasise how excellent the experience of dining at No 1 Fleet Street was. From the efficiency of booking to the ease of paying our bill the service was faultless. We ate scallops, figs with goats' cheese, mussels and belly pork. The bill was very modest including a bottle of wine and some beers. The restaurant was really busy for a Tuesday evening in October which is a real testament to its success and quality. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

We visited on 3 October having seen good reviews. We were not disappointed. Everything was excellent. The Covid procedure was spot on. The staff explained the process, the tables were well spread out and we felt very safe. There was plenty to choose from on the menu, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was very good. We had the roast figs/scallops for starters and pork belly/bream for mains, followed by pistachio tart and panacotta for dessert. Will definitely return on our next visit to Gatehouse

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were holidaying nearby and selected this restaurant for our 55th wedding anniversary based on the Trip Advisor reviews. The booking procedure using email was very efficient and help offered with a taxi when I asked. On arrival there was a slight delay as we waited to be welcomed and taken to the table, Covid procedures were excellent and we felt safe. Service was friendly although, perhaps, the waiting staff could have been more formally dressed for the quality experience being aimed for. The menu looked interesting with a good choice of dishes and several imaginative and unusual offerings. That said although the presentation was good we did feel there were issues which meant the dishes did not fully meet expectations - in no way really poor but not "spot on". The goat's cheese mousse starter was beautifully presented and the starter generoously proportioned but the mousse itself was very bland and the goat cheese taste very subtle. For the main course it was the first time I had fillets of trout served this way and, for me, they were somewhat dry compared with grilled whole fish. Flavour was good but the brocolli florets were pretty much raw.My wife had the lamb which looked really good but bearing in mind price and quality they are clearly aspiring to was quite tough. She asked for a steak knife which was readily brought but there was no concern that the meat might just be on the tough side. We love lamb and this was sort of 8/10 level. For dessert I had pistachio tart - a bit of a puzzle really. For all the world appeared to have been bought in - certainly it was very similar to that supplied from a local wholesaler. It was bland and pretty solidAll in all not an unpleasant experience but a little way to go to achieve the quality and experience they are aiming for. The meal was perfectly paced. One big pricing "shock" was £9 for a small measure of mid-range single malt. Probably the most expensive one I have ever had.

On our return journey home to the ferry after a short break in the Lake District we booked an overnight stay in Gatehouse of Fleet to see if the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor for this restaurant were justified. Our expectations were not only met but exceeded!! The food is absolutely sublime both in terms of creative presentation and exquisite taste. The complimentary freshly baked cheese and onion roll and delicious amuse bouche of sweet potato and cumin veloute was an added bonus. Every dish was original and cooked to perfection. The staff have been very well trained and are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive. In addition, meticulous procedures are in place to ensure the highest standards of hygiene. We can honestly say that it was a memorable meal in every respect and that we shall return at the first opportunity. Well done, Tony and Callum ! You restaurant is a credit to you both.

Something that's clear the moment you walk into The Ship, is the attention given to staff recruitment and training! It's so, so reassuring, especially in these days of pandemic, to experience such high standards of professionalism without any compromise to warmth or friendliness. On the evening we were there this included a remarkably patient and courteous approach toward a couple who seemed slow to understand it could be table service only and that good CV-19 practice necessitated they had their pre-meal drinks at their table and not in the bar. Such a shame because The Ship makes excellent use of their space to separate tables without detracting from the warm and welcoming ambience of the restaurant. Staff provide clear explanations of special measures to keep everyone safe and, unlike too many places, follow these to the letter. It goes without saying at The Ship, that once more the food was great with their creative menu using mostly locally produced ingredients. Not sure that applies to the Fig, Roquefort and Serrano ham starter though (!) but it's well worth departing from local to sample this delicious combination. We always enjoy the house red which, this time, was a great accompaniment for the Barbary duck served with a delicious parsnip croquette and kale. Elsewhere when I've been served kale, I've been disappointed that this favourite green from my childhood has been old and tough but, not so at The Ship where it was beautifully succulent and tasty! As always Toni and Callum gave amazing attention to my wife's food allergies and dietary intolerances, even letting her choose her evening meal from the lunchtime menu (a superb seafood risotto) never causing her to feel she's a nuisance and ensuring she always has a meal to remember for all the right reasons! Well done! Keep up the good work.

First of all, it was a delight to find a good restaurant in a relatively small Scottish town, though being a tourist area and having an artistic population, make it less than extraordinary. It has been extensively “done up” and caters well for the current CoVid restrictions. The food is impressively presented, though some of the results are just short of perfect. The “amuse bouche” was a truffle and something consommé, which was welcome as we approach a chilly October. My wife had the pan-fried king scallops (her favourite) as her starter, presented with a tasty “cereriac” (wild cherry?) purée with somewhat surprising black pudding and chorizo asides and parsnip crisps; whereas I had the roasted figs with Serrano ham & balsamic glaze - I don’t mention the Roquefort stuffing to the figs as I didn’t notice it. However, despite that, it was absolutely delicious.I followed this with the saddle of Galloway lamb which was - unfortunately - mediocre. Whether it was that the smoked garlic jus didn’t work, or whether the somewhat bland butter bean and rosemary potato cake didn’t enhance it, or whether it was medium well-done rather than medium rare, I don’t know, but the petit ratatouille & courgettes were OK.My wife had the roast duck breast with the zucchini and lime Bhakti and parsnip croquette (puffed-up baked-ball), puy lentils and kale, which would have been excellent - if the duck has been medium rare (as advised). Sending it back worked, but the 10-15 minute wait didn’t.We finished off with the baked bitter chestnut & chocolate souflee with prune and armenac parfait, which disappeared very quickly and I had the panacotta (tho couldn’t taste the tequila flavouring with lime curd and crunchy honeycomb - though I really wished they had just slightly warmed the honeycomb as it could have been delicious that way rather than having been over-baked.

We ate here while staying at The Ship Inn. Covid precautions were first class. We saw the barman impressively challenge a group of three individuals from different households and refuse service. Cleaning was thorough. The food was tasty and service was friendly and very covid aware. My wife had the crab starter special which contained a generous portion of crab, while I had the scallop starter. For the entree my wife had the trout, which although tasty was a bit overdone and thus rather dry. I had the special saddle of local red deer, which was delicious and perfectly cooked. For dessert we had the bitter chocolate souffle which was okay.

We had an excellent evening meal at No 1 Fleet St . The food was superb and even with the extra spacing required to comply with Covid social distancing the restruant still had a friendly atmosphere. Toni & Conner looked after us well and were very attentive. Obviously in today's climate there are strict rules around hygiene, masks & distance - how they have adopted these rules were clearly explained to us as soon as we arrived with their precautions more than meeting the standard - it made us feel very safe. No 1 Fleet St is also dog friendly which as we were away with our golden retriever is a must for us - there was plenty of room for him and I am sure that most people visiting that evening were unaware that he was there. Our visit was in early September 2020 and we are already thinking of going back to Gatehouse and if so will definitely return to No 1 Fleet St.

We had two lovely meals here at the end of August. The staff, service and food were excellent and the atmosphere was generally very relaxed with Covid guidelines being strictly adhered to. However, on the second evening we were personally quite shocked to see a number of dogs in the restaurant with their owners. In a restaurant like this, which is fully carpeted in the main dining area, we felt this was both inappropriate and unhygienic. At one stage when a dog and it’s owners arrived there was a lot of growling, snarling and barking between it and another dog in the restaurant. We actually quite like dogs and don’t mind them in pubs or more appropriate places like that, but not in a restaurant where you’re paying a lot of money for a special meal.

The food was also of the highest quality after Ravioli in a Culllen Skint sauce I had probably the best Pork belly I have ever had. Can also recommend the Fig starter and the selection of local cheeses. As the weather was awful we spent a couple of hours in the bar area of the restaurant during the afternoon and were surprised at the number of people either calling in or phoning in unsuccessful attempts to secure tables as they were fully booked up until at least Friday. It is well worth the effort to plan ahead and if unsuccessful please don't be rude as the owner's, staff end food will meke the effort worthwhile.

Had lunch today at 'No. 1 Fleet Street'. It previously was a bar/restaurant only open to residents staying at The Ship Inn Hotel but is now in separate hands as a restaurant/bar and as such is open to the general public. The interior is extremely tasteful and stylish; the Ship Inn building is very attractive anyway, being situated on a corner in the main street. The cooking was simply delicious. The reception on arrival & service was among the most pleasant I have experienced in the UK. It also has a lovely grassy garden, which runs down to the river. Lunch was so good I cannot wait to visit again for dinner. If you are on the A75 and passing by Gatehouse of Fleet it is a must-stop! We ate in the beer garden across the road and I could honestly find no fault in the service. The food was amazing. Not the cheapest menu in town but by jove worth every penny. Nice touch to be offered homemade bread as we waited- even nicer not to be charged for it as other restaurants often do as a hidden charge. Treats were provided for our dog. All in all a delightful experience. Would highly recommend.

Ate here just after lockdown ended and only eating outside allowed. Made the booking when the sun was out but by the time evening came and we were due to eat it was raining. However we kept the booking. We were shown to a table in the Beer garden ..all set out for us. A huge parasol kept everything dry. We had a lovely meal...proper chef cooked food..the meat just fell apart. Food was imaginative and tasty. Despite the rain the service was attentive with nothing too much trouble for our visor clad waiter who came back and forth in the rain to attend to us with smiles every time. This establishment deserves 10/10 and is thoroughly recommended ,

Operating as a pop up bakery during the Covid 19 lock down, we were parked outside and decided to pop in as we have never been in before, we were greeted by a lovely woman who obviously takes a lot of pride in this establishment, extremely friendly, she gave us a full run down of the baked goods and then a tour of the bar and restaurant which look fantastic, we had a look at the menu and then decided on purchasing a couple of mushroom pies which i can honestly say are possibly the best pastry pies i have ever had, we also purchased a couple of other things that we have still to try but i am sure they will be delicious. Well done for offering this service to the Gatehouse community and we cannot wait to try out the restaurant when all of this is over. Thank you.

There was a huge amount of choice on the menu and with a girlfriend who is normally a very picky eater, she actually tried new things and thought it was amazing! Not only that but it has to have been one of the best meals I've ever had. Without a doubt would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good meal.

Ate there with my partner on Friday and have to be honest this was one of the best meals I've ever had. Starter of Scllops was a dream. The main course of Beef Wellington was a huge hit. The dessert or treacle tart was a wee bit dissapointing however did not effect my overall enjoyment. The servcie from satrt to finish was excepetional welcomed at the door and shown to comfy seat by the fire (it was a coled eveneing) where we had a lovely sea food bisque as an Amouse Bouche. Whne shown to the table the staff were attentive without being intrusive, which is a real art.I can't recommend thios palce high enqough and when, not of, we are down thewre again I will be eating there again.

Staying in the area for a couple of days and learnt about this place just off the A75 in the little town of Gatehouse of Fleet. We booked our table early at 6pm and sadly the restaurant remained quiet, with only two other couples dining by the time we left at around 7.45pm. The owner told us there had been several cancellations and wondered if it was because of Corona Virus fears. Such a shame if that was the case. Those cancelling missed out on a superb meal - amazing quality, delicious well presented food in a fine dining style but more substantial portion sizes. We had Scallops and a sea bass starter and each had saddle of red deer with a super smoked fondant potato for mains. Finishing with brownie accompanied by a peanut butter panna cotta and a rich dark choc sauce and salted caramel ice cream and a totally amazing iced terrine of roquefort and borgue honey with a tart apple purée, this was for me, one of the best meals, for the money, I’ve eaten in a long while. The space, despite being large, still manages to feel homely and intimate. It’s beautifully put together in a modern smart style with quality fittings. If you’re in this area support this place and the young couple trying to grow this business. Their food is great - they deserve to do well.

My partner and I were visiting the area to see family for a catch up. We had never been to Gatehouse of Fleet before and we decided to try No. 1 Fleet Street. You must visit if you find yourself here because we had a fantastic meal. We didn’t have a reservation but they had a table for us. We had a great bottle of Malbec and they brought a nice warm amuse-bouche of celeriac and apple velouté. We decided to have mains and desserts so we didn’t try the starters. Two of us are coeliac and they were so accommodating at ensuring we had gluten free options. They even brought us a warm homemade gluten free roll. The regular rolls were great too and they had four different types to choose from. Two of us had the Red Deer with lentils and fondant potatoes. The meat was so tender and the jus was really flavourful. The other two members in our group had the monkfish curry which was a vibrant colour and served with bulgar wheat instead of rice. The desserts were great. The Roquefort terrine with caramelised walnuts was so creamy and went so well with the Malbec. Like a sweet cheeseboard almost. A deconstructed gin and tonic dessert was a winner with my Mum. The treacle tart was beautifully baked and the brownie with salted caramel panna cotta was a hit too. We rounded things off with a selection from their extensive tea menu and also a couple of Irish coffees. Service was great and friendly. Highly recommended!

Very reasonably priced for the food we got and the tea was great. The place stands out from anywhere else ive been to in D&G; and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a nice, relaxed lunch.

My husband and I along with six friends from Glasgow spent a wonderful weekend in Gatehouse of Fleet, we stayed in the excellent Ship Inn which was modern, comfortable, cosy and very welcoming. We also booked into their restaurant - No 1 Fleet Street - which was truly outstanding with superb food, excellent and friendly service and a lovely atmosphere to boot a secret which should be shared with all. If you're in the area we highly recommend both a stay and a restaurant booking and we will be back especially as we hear the afternoon tea is a must !!

My friend and I booked this at the last minute as a treat to ourselves and it didn’t disappoint. On arrival we were met with a very warm welcome; the decor is lovely and relaxing. Seated on a comfortable sofa in front of a log burner, we were presented with a wonderful array of food, both savoury and sweet. The sandwiches, on home made bread, included smoked salmon, roast beef, ham, and egg with caviar....yum. The choice of sweets included, Eaton Mess, chocolate eclairs, scones with clotted cream and jam, chocolate brownies, shortbread, macaroons, and a wee pot plant of heavenly chocolate and cream. Yes we did take two doggy bags home. It was a special visit without being formal. Relaxing and so enjoyable. We also met Dylan, who helps his daddy make the cakes......good lad. We’ll be back.

Family Christmas trip to Gatehouse of Fleet and were recommended this place. Luckily managed to book the evening for their last night open before Christmas. Food was fantastic, we ordered whilst waiting for our table so it came out very quickly. The ‘posh hot pot’ was a huge lamb shank and the meat was falling off the bone. Serious fine dining. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.
