Nippon Kitchen in Glasgow City

Terrible. Do not recommend. Food was tepid and fatty/heavy. Tempura was undercooked leaving it cold and hard and not a light batter at all. Chicken was fried and hard not succulent or flavoursome. Nothing tasty about this. More like poor cold fast food than Japanese. You could make nicer at home. Staff were rude and management were rude. They did not want customers and made that very apparent. As our food was served food we were asked if wanted anything else because they were calling last orders in kitchen, 1hr 20m before it closed. There was no mention of closing when we went in. Manager told us it was a slow night so wanted to send their staff home. Staff cleared up restaurant started beside our table, instead of opposite side of room and left wash cloth and spray on the table beside us to clearly indicate they wanted to clean our table, all whilst we were still eating. All in all a terrible experience and led to sickness from a terrible meal. Choose somewhere else. Much much nicer places to visit in glasgow.

Never been here before but was recommended by family and I recommend it myself. Great service, great food and the drinks are beautiful. If you love cocktails like me I highly recommend the sunrise fizz. Cheap wee late lunch dinner place

I've been visiting Nippon Kitchen for a good few years and they never fail to impress. Amazing food with a very varied menu. Totally separate vegan menu too. Lovely staff and atmosphere. I'm not in Glasgow regularly these days but this is always my chosen restaurant when visiting

Fantastic place to eat great food. Been here a few times now, but turned up without a booking on a Saturday (my bad) and they managed to find us a table. Brilliant 😊

Absolutely incredible food! Amazing service! You MUST book in advance, it's very popular (and for good reason!) We were seated within 10 minutes on a busy Saturday after the rugby

Our server was so friendly and lovely, he really made us laugh and feel welcome. Sometimes seafood can make me feel unwell, but you could tell the quality of the ingredients were excellent and I had no issues. I had the mixed nigiri (egg, sea bass, prawn and tuna) and the duck gyoza, all very tasty. I also tried some of my friend's chicken bento box, which seemed like great value for money as you can try a bit of everything on the menu - the teriyaki chicken in that box was amazing, if I get to come back here I'll have to order that on its own. They also have a separate gluten free menu that has an impressive amount of options.

I booked via 5pm, £15.95 for two courses. The place was quiet when I visited with a friend. The service was quick and friendly..The food was nice, I had a salmon dish which had an additional cost attached on set menu. Definitely worthwhile visiting if you enjoy Japanese food. I have been to better Japanese restaurants though.

I went here for dinner on New Year's Eve wirh a friend. The food was gorgeous, though I think I may have ordered too much as the sushi platter mix was huge. I've been here a few times and love how fresh the fish tastes. The staff are really good, the waitress let us move to a quieter table in the corner and the waiter explained to my friend about the etiquette of serving sake 😀 Will definitely go back as the food and atmosphere are fantastic

This was our favourite place to eat, on special occasions. We would always order the 23 piece sushi platter. Was absolutely amazing every time. Have been coming for almost 3 years now. Sadly they changed the menu and the sushi was barely what it used to be. Standards aren't what they used to be ,food wise. Who adds philadelphia cheese in their sushi and add soy sauce? This was new...and disappointing. Can't go back now as the food isn't as good as it used to be. but it was amazing while it lasted .

Rude staff and terrible service. Messed up our order, didn’t bring us what we asked for and terrible food. Were told that new year’s eve means no one wants to work there so we should just accept bad service. Nice blond girl helped us eventually but would definitely stay away! Reply to owner: you couldn’t see on CCTV (cameras) if one of your waitresses was rude? Maybe cause they don’t record audio….? Advice to anyone reading this: DONT GO, staff is rude and clearly dishonest…

Disappointment served tepidly. Sad really. Last visit pre-Covid after many previous enjoyable meals. Perhaps my seafood dishes were yesterday’s remainders just about warmed up. Asahi beer 5* but that’s not the point. It’s not a bar, is it?

The staff were really lovely and attentive, great sushi and excellent drinks menu.

Went on new years, service was not good and staff told me they did not care because it was new years. Food also did not taste good.

Nice atmosphere and mediocre food. The rice was very meh and long grain instead of tradition Japanese rice. The food was slightly cold and came in confusing order. Too expensive for the quality of food. £18 for something I could've made for £6 and ate elsewhere for £10. Nice posh place to catch up with a friend but there are certainly many which are better tasting with a more reasonable price and similar upbeat environment.

Starters were amazing, but the main meals weren't as good. My teriyaki chicken was tough, like it had been over cooked. I couldn't eat parts of it, and the sauce was excessive. Overall really nice place and would recommend though.

Delicious food but perfunctory service at best. One of our starters went missing, no apology was given, it was just plonked down on the table once we’d asked the server about its whereabouts. No one asked us how the food was, if we wanted any more drinks etc. They’d forgotten to provide small dipping bowls for soy sauce to have with our sushi, we had to flag down a server and request them. No one told us to enjoy our meal etc. We would expect this level of service at Wagamamas or Yo Sushi but not at a well established Japanese restaurant whose website claims “experience is everything”.

Had the spicy broth soup with udon noodles and chicken this evening as well as the chilli squid. The squid unfortunately had very little taste and was extremely chewy, made worse by the fact that it was lukewarm. The broth soup was incredibly disappointing, it was spicy but had an odd sour tang to it. It tasted more like spicy minestrone. The chicken in the broth was also pretty unappetising and had that slimey soft texture often found when chicken is either cheap or past its best. I was very disappointed as the meal was quite expensive and my last visit a few years back had been decent. The upside however was that the waiter was very friendly and service was prompt.

This place is absolutely brilliant: the service was 10 stars (friendly, quick, helpful) and the food, wow: sashimi to die for, best miso ever, sea bass absolutely perfect… cannot fault it. Will be back no doubt. Hidden gem in Glasgow!

After raving about this place to my parents for a long time we came here tonight for my dad's birthday and was pretty disappointed by everything. When the starters arrived they were lukewarm, the karaage chicken was just dry fried chicken. The gyozas were also lukewarm. The prawns were great though, really fresh and tasty. We let the lukewarm starters slide as we were all starving and these things happen sometimes... however our mains came out and i had ordered the teriyaki chicken which just did not taste right at all. The chicken was either really cheap or off. The sauce was tasty but the taste of the chicken was over powering and off. My mum ordered the katsu chicken which was also lukewarm and dried out, both the chicken and the batter. My dad had the katsu prawn which was really nice though. (prawns in both the starters and main was good)... i would not order anything other than the prawns here if i came here again which i feel now is very unlikely... i doubt i will be back. Expensive bill and the food was not great at all. Not worth it

Great Japanese food. For starter I had Salmon, Tuna and Mackrell sashimi, lovely fresh fish. Main was Spicy broth bowl with chicken, yaki ramen noodles. It was packed full of flavour and heat from the spices.

Waiter was fab, handled our table of 7 so well. Food was delicious and we had a great time.

Food was nice, good selection and good that some of the meat is Halal. I'd have preferred more labelling of items that were halal and also the fact the soy sauce on the table contains alcohol but there's an non alcohol alternative available upon request. Other than that it was a nice meal.

Was my first visit, but definitely not my last. Fresh, tasty food at fair prices and amazing, friendly service. Can't wait to go back!

Went there for a Christmas party and just loved the food and service. Loads of vegetarian options which was good to see (as i am veggie).

I would recommend this restaurant if you happen to be anywhere near Glasgow. If not, I would recommend travelling. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the restaurant is spacious and well prepared, the atmosphere is just right, last but not least the food is fantastic.

Made the mistake of going out on a Saturday just before Christmas without a reservation, they received a cancellation as we walked through the door and were happy to help. Food was excellent, wish I'd eaten more.

I go to Japanese restaurants often and this one has by far the best Japanese food. I had a Japanese ball with vermicelli noodles and chicken. The seasoning ginger garlic Everything was just so on point. I need to come here again very soon.

First time in this restaurant and it was a good experience. Although we booked via 5pm the deal we had was the same as if we had walked off the street. Food was good but not sure if the balance was right between main course choices. One was small the other large, but both were good.

First Japanese restaurant I've been to. Excellent food and portions

Food fabulous as always, went towards the end of a night and the staff obviously couldn't wait to get home so weren't as attentive as usual. Plenty of people still there when we left but we couldn't get a final drink as the bar was shut.

Had a few types of nigiri - fresh , good quality fish in the perfect temperature and not fishy at all- rice was seasoned well.The fish roe nigiri was a bit bitter but the rest were delicious.The staff were lovely and the service was one of the best I’ve seen. Questions about the food were answered in a welcoming and patient way and dietary restrictions were accommodated for (allergies and a swap in soy sauce (for one that doesn’t contain alcohol))- was given a small bowel of warm water to dip my fingers before eating the nigiri. I highly recommend going - will definitely be back again

Food is great, but we visited on a Friday night (advertised as open until 11pm), and were rushed out the restaurant by 10.20pm by staff who clearly couldn’t be bothered to work to time. Disappointed. Don’t think I’ll ‘bother’ to spend my money here again.

Came in because we saw that they had a separate vegan menu. We were not disappointed. Chilli vegan stirfry was fantastic and the avocado rolls were nice too. Serving staff were efficient and friendly. House sake was good too. Japanese green tea had free refills which was nice on a cold wet afternoon.

Enjoyable meal in a nice restaurant with a decent environment. Starters were really good and would recommend the sushi and the tempura. Unfortunately our noodles were way to saucy and almost sickeningly sweet. Really enjoyed eating here in the past. And would probably still give it another chance. Just a shame on this occasion.

Food was nice, service was good, but not very happy that they charge 10% compulsory gratuity. I normally tip about 10%, but I like it to be my choice.

Visited with friends recently and had a lovely meal and drinks, great service. They had a separate gluten free menu, which had many dishes on it, also they brought out gluten free soy sauce for me. They seemed to really understand allergens.

Been coming here since the restaurant opened, over 10 years! Love visiting, service is really good and food is great. Would recommend a bento to try a little of everything. The sushi is great and love their tempura. Usually for a lovely Japanese style cocktail too. 😍

Great place usually but the set menu for large groups was very disappointing in price and quality. Three members didn't finish their teriyaki dish as the sauce was so unpleasant.

My first visit was with my father and my sister, brilliant food amazing service had duck with rice and those mini seaweed sushi rolls with salmon and mayonnaise and green tea ice-cream. Food was delicious and fresh & they were kind and accommodating to my gluten free needs. Today got for takeaway the mini ones with salmon mayo again and something I hadn't tried before the Moriawase. Again delicious and fresh I would definitely recommend.

Lovely food and very pleasant staff.

Our food was good... seafood gyoza to start (the plan) was good but a bit mushy. Probably because it sat too long waiting to be served. The entrees were both hot and tasty. A chicken shoyu was loaded with chicken and noodles and the broth was excellent. My wife said her chicken ginger noodles was worth ordering again. High compliment from her. Overall, excellent entrees, but a starter gone bad by sloppy service. It's a bank holiday today...you should give them a chance...just for the excellent food.

I got lots of allergies, the staff was very kind and happy to help me decide between their available options. Also, they were able to slightly accommodate a dish i wanted to try. I loved the tuna!

Ordered a delivery from here for my sisters birthday. The driver spilled two of the dishes. The restaurant did not help as they said it was an issue with Uber eats and can’t do anything. My order was for 9 people so we had spent quite a lot to have a nice meal which was then ruined. I reordered myself then on Uber eats and it took over an hour for the remaining food to arrive. When I spoke to them on the phone they could have at least tried to help or sped up the second order knowing it was half delivered but the attitude was it’s not my problem.

Staff were pleasant and efficient, food was spot on and piping hot at table for all 6 of us, presentation was excellent.

It’s yummy food, but only order as you want the food. Otherwise, it’s “Japanese McDonald’s”: they just bring everything you order - entrees, mains… Also very noisy, so think of this place as Japanese fast food, not a restaurant. Good food though!

This is one of my favourite restaurants. No complaints about the food, always love the teriyaki duck and ramen. Presentation and atmosphere is always superb and I’ve never had issue with service. However, I haven’t been in a while and I’m rather let down that there’s a mandatory tip. I remember there being one just after the lockdown which I thought was fair. Why is there one now? I had thought about leaving one because of the really nice server Ewan only to find that they’d already put on 10% (which is a pretty big tip imo). Mandatory tipping culture has no place in Scotland. What is on the bill should be what I owe and should never include bonuses. It should always be up to the discretion of the customer as an extra thank you (especially considering we’re in a cost of living crisis with less to spend). If you want to pay your staff more then put your menu prices up. I’m sorry but I’m less likely to go here now.

We were spoilt for choice with the vegan menu! Lovely service and good portions of great food.

This is one of our favourite Japanese restaurants. The food is always incredible, and the atmosphere is lovely. Would always recommend the fried rice dishes and the curry udon!

Felt rushed, still eating starter and bringing out main course. Food was tasteless and congealed rice. Never asked if everything was ok and never asked when they collected my plate which was hardly touched. Wouldn't rush back.

Quick dine n'dash. Three warm dishes & two sashimi. One bottled water + 300ml sake £75 inc service which we thought OK. Warm dishes all excellent (prawn tempura, soft shell crab, gyoza) Sashimi just OK. Salmon probably pre frozen. Bland. Tuna OK. Mackerel great. Service efficient. Space is functional. Emphasis on in & out, not lingering. And that's all fine.

Sitio muy recomendable. El ambiente es agradable, la comida está bien calidad/precio para lo que suele ser en general Escocia/UK y la atención fue inmejorable. El pescado crudo riquísimo! Reservar antes porque suele estar llenísimo, y tener en cuenta que tienes que cenar pronto porque a las 21 veo que cierran la cocina. Volvería seguro :-)

Food was good but when the bill arrived I just glanced at it since I was with family and it was “my treat”. I paid then left a tip on the table. Upon arriving home I looked at the receipt in more detail and noticed that with asking me in person, and with no prompt of “Add service charge Yes/No” on the card machine I noticed a 10% service charge had been added. I think this is so cheeky and quite frankly out of order. What am I supposed to do if I don’t want to pay that? Embarrass myself in front of family by asking it to be removed!! Totally out of order. But, as I say, the food was nice!

The food was really good with a varied menu. The prawn tempura was delicious. Sushi was nice but not the best you’ll find in Glasgow. The staff were really friendly as well.

Been coming here on and off for years. The food I thought was Fantastic and Sophie was a wonderful server, never waited for long periods of time. I ordered a selection of sushi and both the king prawn maki and soft shell crab maki was flavourful and tasted fresh. The rice was fantastic and overall the staff did a fantastic job. Will happily come back!

We visited today for lunch, we had never been here before. It is nice surroundings inside and a varied menu. The food itself was mainly nice, although extremely salty. Portions were quite big. Service was very poor... waiting over 20 minutes for drinks we ordered when it wasn't that busy, sitting with our dirty plates for ages. Was quite unimpressed they added a service charge to the bill given the poor service. Not sure I would go back to be honest.

Great foods, great service. Really enjoyed eating here as the capstone if our trip to Glasgow. Made our evening feel really special.

Oh dear... easy to miss the entrance which is right on the corner of the junction... I wish I had. Whilst the interior is attractive and the staff numerous, the service is lamentable and the food poor. My first gripe was that it took an age to seat me when I arrived at 13:30 in spite of only being 60% full. A table had to be cleared and that was a recurring theme for all subsequent diners. Pairs of diners had to wait in excess of 2 minutes before being seated (I started timing it for fun). One Japanese couple, appalled by not even being acknowledged after more than a minute left. The service, once seated, is at best relaxed and at worst slow. When it came to my bill.... when paying contactless the gratuity was (voluntarily and without prompting) deducted. A first for me but saved an argument. Perhaps they realise..... The food is poor. Very poor. You'd be better off grabbing a box of Japanese nigiri from a supermarket poor. The tempura is think, not light as it should be and greasy as your worst Glaswegian chip shop. It hides large, think slices of vegetable. So heavy that, even for someone proficient with chopsticks, they are hard to lift. Not delicate at all. The rice had been hanging around forever. The dry, crispy, over desiccated grains were unpleasant. The pickles were unremarkable. 2 different kinds of fish were sandwiched together ! The miso soup would have been better if you'd made your own out of a packet at home. Flavourless ! On the other hand the eel was tasty. The fact that one member of staff saw a receipt drop to the floor and rather than scoop it up immediately, elected to have an exchange and then picked it up speaks volumes for the lack of priorities and understanding of the importance of the many aspects of running a good restaurant. AVOID.

Food was delicious, although some of it took a while to come out. Person who served us was really friendly. There was a small mistake with the bill but it was fixed quickly.

I love Nippon Kitchen, and have been going since it opened around 10 years ago. The Spicy Beef Ramen is outstanding.

Poor service, food cold and not at all authentic…expensive aswell…not impressed and wouldn’t go back
