Having read the featured reviews I totally agree with all of them This is a Island Gem one that you would never expect to find tucked away on the Isle of Mull down a track.' From the minute you walk through the door you're treated to a 'foodie' experience like no other. Every time we've visited Mull we ensure that we have a table booked in advance. Everything about the experience makes it a winner, food, service, location, decor. The food is absolutely amazing in fact i've purchased the book which is a story about the Ninth Wave restaurant as well as featuring some amazing recipes. Thank you Carla and Jonny, keep doing what you're doing

What a fabulous restaurant- small with beautiful decor ( loved all the clocks! ) be sure to book. Each course is incredible, I'd love to return to try more. Outstanding dishes were mackerel and crab, caught by the owner and host! The cheese board was delicious. Great gin cocktail to start and delicious white wine with the meal. Like nowhere you'll ever visit which makes it all the more special.

What a fantastic little restaurant. Definitely worth a visit but make sure you book in advance. We were lucky and got the last table.Restaurant is small but nicely presented. The atmosphere is intimate holding about 18 covers. Food was of an exceptionally high standard, fresh as can be beautifully presented. Lobster was sensational! The hosts were charming, entertaining and happy to answer any questions.Price was very reasonable considering the quality, between £40 - £70 a head. Wonderful find and thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Mull

We had a long drive to get to this restaurant, but was well worth it.Warm welcome into this lovely converted Croft. All ingredients are fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. Mackerel had been caught that day by the owner and was so fresh served with beetroot. We chose lobster and the host kindly reminded us about how to deal with claws etc. The scallops were perfect with a carrot base. The desserts were from produce grown in the restaurants own garden. To end we had home made chocolates white with pink peppercorns and dark chocolate that melted in the mouth.Service was professional and unobtrusive and all dishes were explained.Thank you Ninth Wave for a lovely evening. Booking is essential. This restaurant is closed from October to ?April.

Let me start by saying, the food was very good. Scallops were probably the best I’ve ever had with incredible accompanying flavours. Wine delicious and reasonably priced. BUT, Carla/Johnny, firstly please fix your driveway. It really lets you down! Felt like we were going off roading, not for a beautiful meal. The service was good, and Johnny and the other lady were charming throughout. However.. when we came to pay, my friend and I wanted to split the bill 50/50 which required two card payments. This clearly frustrated Johnny. Not helped by an incoming phone call which interrupted the line and delayed him. We saw his charming personality instantly shift, and his attitude/demeanour made us very very uncomfortable. So much so, we both commented the minute we go out of the door. When you are charging these prices; please remember manners and professionalism. Still glad I went; but probably wouldn’t revisit.

A warm welcome awaits you as you when arrive at the Ninth Wave in preparation for a superb meal. Whether it be a special vegan meal for my daughter, locally caught scallops, home grown vegetables, the fresh fish of the day or some exquisite pudding: your taste buds will be in overdrive. The attention to detail was very impressive as the after-dinner chocolates included specially created vegan fondant : this was true class.

We visited Ninth Wave 4 years ago and it is still superb. Creative menu with wonderful fresh local produce often caught by John the owner with Carla (and waiter!). Carla mixes so many flavours, but never gratuitously, and everything is designed to support the star ingredient which for us was scallops then crab then lobster. Great cocktails, gin with a big myrtle stirred and a very good fairly priced wine list, the albarino was delicious. Lovely puddings the rhubarb meringues were especially good, but simply no room for cheese although we managed a hand made chocolate each. Lovely knowledgeable service and they even gave us a lovely card for our wedding anniversary!

We recently had dinner at the Ninth Wave, with great expectations and we were not disappointed. We tried the 4 course meal plus the cheeseboard. Lobster, crab, halibut..everything was perfect, combining freshness and creativity in every course. I've found the dessert based on coffee a bit too sweet, but I admit I'm not a big fan of sugar. The cheeseboard was also very good, a perfect conclusion for a great meal. Service is friendly in a nice atmosphere.

Due to intermittent phone connectivity on the island, we booked our meal at the last minute but were very lucky to benefit from a cancellation. This has to be one of the best meals that we've had. Respectively;in scallops, mackeral, half lobster, sticky toffee pudding, rhubarb compote, lovely coffee and divine Mull made chocolates. I was delighted by the overall attention to detail from the restaurant decor and fittings, the garden, and John's obvious, and well deserved, pride in the food. served. The anniversary card on our table was an extra special touch. Would highly recommend.

The prospect of a pleasant and memorable meal came far short of the mark. To be created by the odour of a deep fat fryer was not a good start. The starter of mackerel supposedly caught as we were advised by one on the host, when presented, look like a visit to a local shop for the vacuum packed mackerel was more accurate. The remaining 3 courses were not helped by this. Whilst the presentation was good the dinning setting was not you could have been in a closed room anywhere with no indication of your location.

My boyfriend and I went here for his birthday meal while we were on holiday and the whole experience was a highlight for us. The food was excellent and it was made even better knowing how fresh it was. The service was helpful and friendly - John (I think) gave us some very useful advice (which we asked for) on how to approach the crab and lobster. The restaurant didn't feel pretentious or snobby at all which I sometimes find at places like this.

We weren’t expecting such a wonderful fine dining restaurant in such a remote place. We walked up from from our Airbnb in Fionnphort which took about 15 minutes and didn’t know what to expect but the place itself and the people there were great. The food was local and tasty and superbly presented. John the maitre’/ owner had caught our lobster that morning. His wife was the cook and they were joined by another couple for the summer season. You have to travel a long way to get to this restaurant and sadly it is not worth the effort. The menu is comically overwritten - and the food is overcomplicated, underseasoned and ungenerous. The owner/waiter/fisherman would be better spending his time fishing for bigger scallops rather than struggling as front of house/waiter, as on the night I visited he seemed very stressed out which created a rather manic atmosphere. I am at a loss to understand why, with access to fantastic ingredients the chef is so determined to overcomplicate every dish. For a masterclass on how it should be done better to try to get a table at Ballygown at a fraction of the cost.

So we were not expecting to find such a gorgeous, Michelin Star standard restaurant behind a farm on the Isle of Mull. My husband and I were celebrating getting married the week before so when we arrived there was a surprise card on our table and a small box of chocolates. In regards to the meal, the food looked almost too beautiful to eat but when we did, it was absolutely delicious. Highlights were the mull scallops on a spicy carrot mouclade with coconut & lime sambal and the mull half lobster with a citrus asparagus salad and a lobster & crab wonton. I titled this review "Unexpected" as it was a surprise to find a restaurant of this standard in "Ultima Thule." Rather than my trying to write an appreciation, It's best to take a look at their website, which gives an entirely accurate description of their approach to the use of local vegetable, fish and meat produce. The only caveat I would give is to confirm what its says on their website that booking is essential, preferably a long way ahead, as this is not a large restaurant. We were lucky to get is at short notice.

Every time we go we compare it to the many great places we have been lucky enough o eat at in our lives all over the world and it certainly comes in the top 10 and possibly in the top 5. There are M* places we have been to which we would rate well below the Ninth Wave. Something very special has been created here and it must have taken - and must still take - a ton of work with only 2 people involved. It's a beautiful little restaurant with Michelin style and quality of cooking on offer in really lovely surroundings. In fact, I loved how the place looked and felt, both inside and outside and that's always important in my book when we dine out.Yes it's expensive but the dishes have the wow factor. No potato with the main course as such, but light dishes and really excellent homemade bread served, small loaf - size!We had the lobster as our 'main' course and it was superb, probably the best lobster I've tasted (our host remembered landing it that day!), with a pea/broad bean puree which just burst with flavour. But if I didn't like lobster, which always is such a luxury food when eating out, I admit I would have been a bit disappointed in only having the choice of pork belly or mackerel, given the £48+ price tag.The menu is a bit complicated. It offers five courses but if you only want three courses, as we did, you are limited to courses 1,3 and 4 unless you want to pay a £3 supplement per course(not indicated on the menu), for ordering courses 2 and 5.Once this was explained, we understood and were happy to pay the extra. Perhaps service could be a tad more relaxed overall, it's professional but with a touch of edginess which I didn't particularly like. However I quibble - lang may their lum reek!

We had noticed the sign for Ninth Wave, it's at the roadside and leads up a very narrow path. As we were driving a 30 foot motorhome we decided not to to even attempt the ascent! However visiting relatives had a car with them so we borrowed it and ventured up. The restaurant is in a stylishly restored 200 year old Bothy, painted dark green with black it is surrounded by a beautiful herb garden and pots of flowers, there was a lady in the garden who asked if she could help. She was actually Carla Lamont the Chef patron We explained this was a recce to establish whether we could get our motorhome up and parked. She couldn't have been more helpful, not only could we park it, she invited us to stay over in the car park so we could have a drink and was happy for us to walk our dogs on her land and the nearby quarry. We booked in for the following Thursday. When we arrived Carla was out in the herb garden collecting flowers and herbs for evening service, there is also a large garden where they grow their own veg- so some of the food only travels feet and inches to the kitchen- few food miles here!We walked the dogs at the nearby quarry and unwittingly walked Johnny's ( Carla's husband and partners) commute to his fishing boat - surely on a good day the most delightful walk, while on a bad day with the wind howling and the rain bleaching it must be hell!! True dedication to his guests! Fisherman by day and kilted patron server by night he is a true multi tasker! When we had booked, Carla had enquired about special dietary requirements or if it was a special event, it was a lovely touch to find a card and gift of chocolates on our table to wish us a happy 30th Wedding Anniversary. The dining room is small and intimate, fourteen covers, stunning decor, with innovative use of lights and colour. Superb quality tables and chairs, top quality cutlery, everything is high end and carefully chosen with great thought- no wobbly tables and chairs here! The menu offers 3,4 or 5 courses and/or a cheeseboard. Initially thrown by the menu as Carla had given us a sample menu on our previous visit- we had made our choices and were salivating at the thought of it, the actual menu was completely different and required some thought. Being greedy we selected the full works.Homemade bread fresh from the oven arrived, a good sized loaf with butter we had to restrain ourselves not to polish it off.Starters were extraordinary, fish course was superb, mains just improved on the first two courses- best bit was Johnny's instructions on dealing with the half lobsters to get the best bits- don't worry about cutlery- just get in with your hands and teeth- we did and it was superb- caught by him earlier that day! Dessert was sublime- my husband demonstrated great restraint in not licking his plate but when he observed a nearby diner running his finger across the plate then licking it....... he couldn't resist a couple of swipes himself! We were going to resist the cheeseboard, but are so glad we didn't. Five beautifully kept cheeses accompanied by honey comb, home made chutney and oatcakes- glorious.Service was superb, food was flawless the atmosphere was relaxed and very pleasant.I have read some of the reviews about Johnny and service and can only assume these are from the nightmare customers every restrauteur dreads. I often wonder how some of these people behave in restaurants to be "treated so poorly" Johnny, Carla and their staff work story their socks off to provide exceptional food and a real dining experience- every customer present that evening was very complimentary. As a gift for my son who is also a chef I bought a copy of Carla's book. The Ninth Wave - love and food on the Isle of Mull, she very graciously inscribed it for him. After leaving the restaurant I started flicking through it and was hooked- highly recommended- the story of how Pool mad Carla who was working on Iona but had to travel to Pionnphort to play Pool and met the dirtiest man she had ever seen but who cooked for her octopus stuffed tomato and fed her whole lobster, this first meal led to The Ninth Wave- eat the food but read the book to understand the menu and the extraordinary couple behind it.

We were celebrating a family anniversary and this was definitely the place to come for a special celebration meal. It couldn't have been more perfect. The service was excellent, the venue delightful and the food was out of this world - both in presentation and all the wonderful flavours. We had a great evening.

This is easily the best place for food and wine on Mull. The restaurant is small sitting maybe a maximum of twenty people but the atmosphere is lovely and the decor is all very stylish without being over the top.We had a choice of three dishes for each of the four courses followed by a well thought through cheeseboard (although I would have preferred grapes to apples to cleanse the palate - each to their own though). Each dish was very well presented and tasted great, I tried a few dishes which I thought were unusual and each turned out to be a lovely surprise. The dishes are all starter size but as someone who has a healthy appetite I can reassure you that you will not go home hungry. The wine list is fairly comprehensive and you should find a few nice choices that meet your preferences. They have many more half bottles than you would expect which allows you to mix and match which is always good. The whites I recognised were all 'good' and fairly priced. The port selection is the only weak point - a choice of two, I had a nice tawny port but the other was nothing special (which my other half had), I would have liked to see a wider range - I think port is making a comeback so perhaps this will change as more buy it. Others have commented on the owner and taken offence, we found him charming. His sense of humour added to the experience and nothing was too much trouble, I thought he went out of his way to make sure we had a good time. We will certainly return and I would strongly encourage you to visit as it is well worth it.

I was very excited to book this restaurant to meet up with my cousin and meet her friends. I booked in April to secure a place in July. I didn't have cell or internet so I didn't know that one member of the party had to back out at the last minute. Also, I didn't know that the other friend had a food allergy as I was just meeting her for the first time. We arrived separately and were so excited to meet up and have dinner. Our waiter turned out to be the owner who was quite surly and very upset about this lack of information. When I told him everything looked wonderful and asked for a suggestion he said (I paraphrase), "I don't know. Pick what you like". He warmed up a bit towards the end of the meal but I felt very uncomfortable. At the end of the meal, when, we went to pay, he actually had the audacity to ask if we wanted to add a trip. As an American and overtipper, I was horrified that he asked such a thing. His service and manners were abhorrent. Also, it isn't typically customary to tip the owner unless exceptional service. It was disappointing. That being said, the food was excellent. My compliments to the chef. Advice: There are a lot of comments on this page about this man. I don't like to give bad reviews but I suggest he tweak his customer service skills for future guests.

The Island of Mull although having stunning landscape and an abundance of wildlife is sadly lacking in refined dinning experiences; and this may explain why so many people have flocked to this restaurant. Put this restaurant or rather the server/owner in any other location and the doors would have closed years ago. This is franchise dining posing as fine dinning. This was my second visit to the restaurant, having first visited with my husband at the beginning of June- our meal at this time was OK, not great- OK. This time I was meeting friends from the USA- one of which had made the booking; when she did, she had neglected to mention that I was coeliac and normally this is not an issue for any restaurant- and I would not have expected it to be for this restaurant, as I knew that the majority of the menu could easily be adapted. When I announced to the "man in a kilt"- owner and waiter, that I was coeliac- he had only what I could describe as a tantrum and threw the menu down on the table before belittling me and my guests for not informing them of this when booking. I explained quietly that having eaten here before, I knew the menu could be adapted. He continued to belittle me and frankly I thought he was going to have a heart attack! Then when told that our 4th guest could no longer dine with us- declared "that the evening had got off to a poor start"... With hindsight we should have left at that point. Dinner on my previous visit had been acceptable. This meal was lacklustre and lacked finesse; the pigeon and langoustines overcooked.... Presentation was poor. Make no mistake this is NOT fine dining, its above the Mull pub grub average- but would not be acceptable in Glasgow or Edinburgh. To cap it all, the waitress loudly crashed around cleaning cutlery and when asked to be quite, the owner/waiter joined in and made even more noise! Would I return- no I would not. The waiter/owner ruined what was to be a special meeting between friends who had not seen each other for many years.

Went here to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday and the Ninth Wave did not disappoint. We were greeted with a birthday gift on arrival which was a nice touch. Fabulous gin cocktails (I went for the Isle of Harris "old sea dog") and excellent range of drinks. The main focus however has to be the food which was delicious. Everything was so fresh and it was clear that a great amount of care and passion went into each plate. finished up with a cheese board and the honeycomb and cheddar was a hit!Service was excellent and never felt forgotten about or bothered too much. Beautiful setting in a beautiful part of the Island. Thoroughly recommend for anyone celebrating a special occasion or who wants to enjoy some incredible seafood.

Four of us dined at the Ninth Wave to celebrate our sons 30th birthday. We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown to our table. A card and some chocolates from the proprietors were at our sons place at the table. Drinks ordered and time was given to look at the menu. We made our selections which included a lot of seafood. Every single dish was a delight to look at and to taste. Instruction was given for novices if cracking open crab claws or Lobster. There was no rush throughout the evening and three and a half hours later we left feeling we had had the best meal ever. This was our first trip to the Ninth Wave and will not be our last. Excellent.

Amazing food, well presented & Johnny's explanation of how to eat a lobster ensures you get every lady bit of goodness. Do wonder why, despite lots of awards for Carla & John, this place hasn't yet had a Michelin award...will definitely come I think....worth a visit however far you have to travel ( The lobster was so good,I forgot to take a photo!!!)

We have driven past the sign at the side of the road near Fionnphort many times. We finally found an excuse to treat ourselves, so booked six months ago for dinner. What a treat! Beautiful ingredients, expertly cooked with flair and imagination. The friendly service and presentation had a theatrical air which added to the experience. I am no expert about fine dining except for what I've seen on Masterchief but this ticked all our boxes! On top of the beautiful eating experience, the location is something that one could never replicate anywhere else and well worth the journey on its own. The only downside was a group of young people eating at the next table who talked without drawing breath and didn't stop for a moment to consider where they were or what it was they were eating, Sadly one can't choose one's dining companions!! We particularly liked the gently background music which gently added to the ambiance and did not include songs that snag at ones attention. We will be back next year.

Definitely recommend if you are staying on Iona or Fionnphort to make a reservation at the Ninth Wave. John and his wife Carla have created a wonderful destination. The restaurant is small - seats 16 and with a 4 - 5 course meal, I believe there is only one seating of the tables each night. Need to be there by 7:00 pm. The food is locally sourced and much of the seafood is caught by John or his neighbor. Great value for the presentation and incredible taste.

A 10 minute walk from the village, this is a different dining experience. The restaurant can only accommodate about 15 people, so you must book in advance. The menu is based on the best of Scottish seafood and produce, with little twists to make quite unusual dishes. Don't miss the mussels to start and the sticky toffee pudding with Dambuie ice cream to finish.

Simply a fabulous experience. An excellent choice of food presented as 3, 4, or 5 course dinner. John is a witty host and offers his time to ensure the meal is fully enjoyed - advice on how to access meat in crab claws and lobster. Much food is home sourced - John fishes daily and Carla lovingly tends her herb garden. Wine list is good and sensibly offers several options of high quality in half bottles. Worth going out of your way although the journey home can be demanding - sheep and lambs take a liking to the roads at night.Being open on a Sunday helps when your own hotel doesn't offer dinner that day!Don't miss the opportunity and don't be put off by the immediate access - the small restaurant is just perfect for what it does.

Read the reviews which made this a must visit on our holiday. We've eaten all over the world & this rates up there with the best. Presentation is outstanding, provenance is second to none - they catch the fish & shellfish themselves, my mohito was made with mint from their garden as was my salad, garnished with their flowers too. I was given the best explanation of how to eat a Lobster I've ever had & it was superb! So it might seem like a long way to go for a meal but it was worth it in every way

We had booked Ninth Wave well in advance and were really looking forward to an intimate restaurant experience. On arrival at our 7:30 booking time, we found to our dismay that of the 16 seats in the restaurant, 12 of them were taken by a large group. We thought that this was going to make for a very long, slow evening, which it did at first. The proprietor, dressed in a kilt, was so frazzled taking the food orders for this big group that he didn’t even acknowledge us until we had been sitting down for 40 minutes. There was another waitress who we hassled somewhat and managed to get water, the wine list, and ultimately wine and menus (they only have 12 menus in a 16 seat restaurant. After we had ordered, things improved somewhat and our food came relatively quickly – they knew we were a bit annoyed. You have the choice of 3, 4 or 5 courses – we chose three - mussels 3 ways, - venison carpaccio and local lobster. All were excellent, but for the price we were a bit disappointed with the overall experience. They aren’t set up to cater for big groups and really should not have taken this large group booking.

Once again, the highlight of our annual trip to the West Coast of Scotland was our final evening meal at The Ninth Wave. This is an absolute gem of a restaurant set in the picturesque Ross of Mull, where Carla and John deliver an eating experience that lives long in the memory. The freshly caught seafood, and the locally sourced venison, lamb, and beef, are prepared to perfection by Carla, and served by John with his unique dry Scottish wit and repartee! This deservedly award winning establishment is well worth a visit, and we certainly have no hesitation in recommending it to others. See you next year!

Had wonderful meal at Ninth Wave. Great use of fresh (lobster caught that afternoon) and local ingredients with a clean and interesting approach. Mix of unusual flavours and ingredients make lovely dishes like seared venison with wasabi, ginger and soy and lobster with mango. Served by the fisherman who was out on his boat that afternoon and picking vegetables from their kitchen garden that morning. Book in advance, only seats about 16.

I have been dining at The Ninth Wave since it first opened its doors in 2009 and what an extraordinary few years it has been – for the owners, the restaurant, the food industry and the Isle of Mull as a whole. I live on Mull and have been able to dine here at least once every year and feel very fortunate to have such a high-calibre, award winning and unique restaurant on the island. I have enjoyed all my meals at The Ninth Wave over the years and the most recent meal last weekend was no exception – delicious smoked lobster, fillet steak and peach compote crumble washed down with Kirsch Royale cocktails and an exceptionally good house red! No room for coffee just the handmade chocolates and all served with a smile. Now here’s the question - where else can you dine (not just here on Mull), knowing the owners catch or grow the fresh seasonal produce, cooked with such creative care and passion and then served so imaginatively? Putting everything into context – the remote island location, 16 hour+ days worked by the owners catching, growing, harvesting, producing and serving the food, as well as every other aspect in running and marketing the business, all done with ecological mindfulness, then without a doubt dining at The Ninth Wave is worth every penny.

Wow! What an unlikely place for such a good place to eat.My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous evening at Ninth Wave. The service was impeccable, yet the whole place had a feeling of relaxed refinement. The dining room would not have looked out of place in a chic London restaurant, yet the approach road was a small farm lane completely of the beaten track! The ambiance was a mixture of private dining and an informal family dinner. John's attentive and knowledgeable service, combined with the most fabulous flavours and presentation from Carla, make this restaurant a truly 'different experience'! Knowing that berween the two of them they have caught, prepared and served your food, really lets you know its provenance and quality! We loved it. Just remember to book well ahead

We booked a table here about three months in advance, when planning our trip to the Outer Hebrides and Mull. It was to be the penultimate restaurant we visited during our 10 days away and we had high hopes. Despite the "high-end" look (and failry high prices) of the menu on the website, we were warmly wlecomed though we were wearing walking boots and hiking jackets, having walked up in the dark from our B&B in the village. A good start. The room is small but smart. The atmosphere was failry hushed. Hoewver the co-owner / wiater in his kilt and his friendly tableside manner made us feel very relaxed - as did the interesting selection of cocktails and local beers!. The food itself was a dispaly of culinary artistry. Also, despite its delicate appearance and presentation, it certainly didn't leave us hungry. My dessert - a kind of deconstructed lemon possett is the best description I can think of - was presented like a work of art with elements balanced and positioned to perfection. Was it great food? I'm not sure. It was very good food making exellent use of very fresh, very local ingredients. I'm glad I've been. If I was in the area again I might not go again. But I wouldn't put off anyone who wants to try it.
