Nihao in St Albans

Poor quality food, we ordered a variety of dishes and it was all bad. The noodles were burnt, the beef with mushroom came in a greasy soup, we couldn't eat the chicken and cashew (it came in the same greasy soup). I would not recommend eating here.

This has been our new place to go for a Chinese takeaway now for the last couple of months. The flavours are great, the options are the best when you order any particular item you can remove things you don't want. Having someone with food sensory issues in the house hasn't always been great for takeaways but here, it's absolutely great for us because I can remove food like onions and bean shoots as well as make it less or more spicy. If you love a takeaway but you have children with sensory needs who don't like certain items, you can remove them for nearly each item you order. It's great, and it's definitely our go-to place for the best Chinese takeaway. Staff are also helpful if I've needed to ring them too. Would highly recommend if you've not tried it.

WOW! Amazing food and service. One of the best places to get Mapo tofu in the region. The duck is also truly amazing. I will be going back often.

Used Nihao takeaway for the first time a few weeks ago and was really pleasantly surprised. We've been back since and it was as good! Couldn't fault anything and will continue to drive from Harpenden although would prefer to have delivered but was told they wouldn't come to me.

Ordered a takeaway online. Some of the more recent reviews put me off. But ... it was great. Generous portions, delivered quickly, tasty, very nice duck, noodles, starters etc. A treat. 10/10 ( Missed the fortune cookies.)

Ordered a delivered takeaway despite being a bit dubious due to some recent reviews. I've got to say we were very pleasantly surprised with the experience. Delivered quickly, well cooked, good portions and all very nice. This was a set meal for two and we couldn't fault it. We are still snacking on the free giant sized prawn crackers! Will definitely be trying again in the future.

Used to regularly order from Nihao, new owners in & it’s gone right down hill. We’ve tried several times but no more. Orders are very rarely right, always missing items ordered. The food quality is awful, rude arrogant staff that think it’s ok to hang up the phone & stangely they think it’s ok to rank up their prices. Do yourself a favour & avoid the place.

I vowed not to get another takeaway from there , I thought third time luck how wrong I was it was awful, what a mug I am !!!!!!

We’ve had quite a few takeaways from here over the years and used the restaurant. The food has always been good and fresh and the chicken balls nice and crispy. So we had our first Chinese takeaway for the year and we where really disappointed. Cash only and seems like new owners. The chicken balls where stodgy the crispy duck was in tiny bits like it had been put into a blender and not shredded and I found three bits of bone, the satay chicken was dry on the outside but wet inside, it seemed like it was precooked and reheated. Not sure we will be back unless things improve a lot. Shame it was really good

We used to love this restaurant, used to be the best Chinese around, not anymore, it’s either got a new chef or new owners, whichever it is, the food is very disappointing now, the quality was awful, definitely won’t be going back in a hurry, such a shame.

We normally order our food from Oriental in Harpenden but I’m glad we ordered with Nihao…the food was fantastic, and not covered in grease. Will order again!

We ordered takeaway for the first time and we will definitely be ordering again!!! It was the best Chinese takeaway we've had. The prices were fantastic, the portions were good and the service was great. When I went to collect, they had everything ready and waiting and even included a free dish (pork rib starter) which was delicious. I highly recommend visiting.

I have bought food from here several times. Always pleased with service and variety.

Very nice. Especially liked the duck, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken. ( 1/2 a duck worked well for 3 adults. ) Easy to over order, but it was all yummy. Quite salty some of it - so get some drinks ready! Good to support a local business.

Great food that isn't overly greasy like some Chinese and Thai can be, although some of it can be a bit pricey. It's worth checking the price when ordering, as the current online menu doesn't match the printed menu they are using.

Ordered Chinese for a second night in a row and the food was excellent. It’s easily the best Chinese takeaway within a few miles.

Brilliant take out, always consistent, always hot, great friendly service and of course excellent food. So glad Nihao is back after 11 weeks closes during lockdown.

Have been here many times over the years. Great food always however our latest visit will be our last. Absolutely no welcome or polite conversation. Food delivered to table without a word said. No please or thank you and owner constantly sniffing as he delivered our food. It may have been acceptable 10 of 15 years ago for Chinese restaurant owners to be rude to their customers if the food was good but it’s not acceptable in 2020. You simply have to put the effort in with your customers and in future we will be visiting the much busier Golden Elephant across the road (even though arguably the food isn’t as good!) They have lost a high spending customer here for good as I’m not prepared to be treated like that as a recognised returning customer.

Simple and straightforward. Extensive Chinese & Thai menus. Has a regular local clientele, but never seems overly busy. We usually find a table with no problem, and the service is quick and accurate. Food good; hot and freshly cooked. We've never been disappointed. There's a public car park at the bottom of the hill, behind the steakhouse. Only a short drive from Harpenden, Luton, WGC; this place deserves to be more widely known and more popular.

Food good but service rude and resentful. Clearly they dont train their staff in customer service. Very junior surly waiter ignored our table and prioritised others even though we were first in restaurant! Continued ignoring us and very surly even when problem pointed out. Owners should take action as behaviour of a junior inexperienced untrained waiter is spoiling their restaurant

Top tip, dont book a table for more than two. Table booked for 8, arrived to empty restaurant, drinks order taken.....all good. Then 4 tables of 2 arrive and all of a sudden we are second class citizens. Others tables orders taken first and food deivered first. When we politey complain are told other tables are more important......totally rude, totally outrageous........shame becuse food when it eventully arrivec was quite good.....hence the 1 star....but no excuse for rude, insolent, ignorant and unprfoessional service.........AVOID......MANY BETTER ALTERNATIVES CLOSE BY

Great food at a reasonable price

Last Tuesday I reserved a table for two at 1800 on Saturday, everything was fine. We arrived at 1755, the restaurant was open, lights on, sign saying open..yet no staff. When a member of staff appeared we explained that we had a booking, she said “cancelled, you leave”, when questioned they had cancelled our booking for 2, because they had a group of 4 now booked on the table. This ruined our evening, and we will never return, this is a real shame, because the food is generally excellent. We will be going to the golden elephant, which is a 2 min walk away and has equally good food.

Just had delicious family pre-Christmas dinner here. Generous portions hot tasty food. Try sizzling dishes are really tasty. Good selection of starters fishcakes, spring rolls and salt and pepper squid all went down a storm and duck with pancakes were demolished. This place is so reasonable and owner was friendly and welcoming. Daughter indulged in waffles and ice cream and had some coffees really lovely experience definitely be back soon

Nihao is on my way back home from work so sometimes I'll just drop by for some takeaway. They do classic English Chinese food with consistent quality. Can't fault the value. Recommend it if you are in the area. Hard to find parking though.

First time at this particular takeaway and have to say that I'm impressed with the few dishes we chose. Tasty food and good value for money.

I had booked a table for 2, but was shown to a table for 4. When it became clear that my guest had to cancel, I was told “you move”, and I was moved to a table for 2 (at this point I was the ONLY customer).Having got settled in my new table, the waiter arrived with pan and paper and waited, there was no “are you ready to order?” Or “May I help?”...just stood there waiting.I ordered starter and main courses, and Chinese tea.The tea arrived without comment.The starter was served without comment, really nice sized portion, very well presented, and tasted fab... when I’d finished eating, the table was cleared without comment or question.A few min later, the main was presented, again no comments, and again, excellent food and presentation,The waiter arrived, snacked the tea pot and walked off... didn’t sat a word...reappeared 5 min water, with more hot water..and still no comment.As I was finishing my main course, the waiter started to write my bill up...really not impressed.So, I ordered a pudding...which arrived after a 5 min wait, again, well presented, good portion size and tasted good.Bill presented, without comment or question..clearly me enjoying my meal or any other comment I may want to make, was clearly not important.Overall, the food was excellent, the portions big, the flavours excellent...and the food deserves a repeat visit. The service was shockingly poor and would discourage any further visits. So the question is, do you visit for the excellent food and ignore the poor service; or do you go elsewhere and hope the food is the same....Really this is a takeaway which has a restaurant in the side, and makes it clear that they cannot handle food intolerances, as everything is cooked together.

Food is a good price and excellent. It also has a lovely little restaurant. Staff friendly and helpful. Good for just two, or even if there are ten of you.

This used to be really good but the prices have been creeping up and up for some time - especially more noticeable around the time they opened their restaurant. The portion sizes have also been reduced.

We live in Wheathampstead and use the Nihao as our first choice takeaway a couple of times a month. The food is always excellent and comes highly recommended.

Lucky to have Nihao as our local Chinese. Fresh, fast and friendly. They really do make the best chicken balls in the world too! Have had take out too many occasions to mention over the last 10 years and it has always been top quality.

Restaurant was selected based on TripAdvisor ratings/reviews but overall very disappointing experience. I don’t understand the earlier reviews unless the venue has changed ownership, or chef in interim, or else we were just unlucky on the night we went?

Quite basic and probably more authentic for it. Wife and I enjoyed our meal and evening. When it's busy, it is difficult to get through on the phone to book, but we called in on spec just as things quietened down, so got a table without booking.

The crispy duck was amazing for that IllI give you a star! The rest of the dishes had very slimey, goeey & chewy meat! I wouldn't recommend it, not going back.

We have been using Chi Chinese in St.Albans for our take aways but when they recently closed down we tried other take aways but they just weren't as good. I read the reviews of Nihao and so tried them tonight and was very very impressed. Everything was excellent. The beef was incredibly tender and flavoursome. All the dishes were perfect and the lady in the restaurant was lovely. Only downside is they don't deliver (we live in St.Albans) but its worth the drive. Will definitely use again.

You wouldn't believe this tucked away Thai restaurant in Wheathampstead village could serve such delicious,quality, tasty, good value,decent portions thai and chinese food. It isn't fancy from the outside.Also offer an attentive personalised service. Well worth the drive! You can ask for more spicy food, less oil etc- they don't mind.

Brilliant Food and Service as always!

Last visited a year or so ago with a buddy who believed he had eaten at some of Londons finest Chinese restaurants. Visited the restaurant again last week for a Friday night dinner with other friends from out of town. During the meal they also commented that the food was quite simply the best Chinese food they had ever eaten. Me and my wife agreed, quite simply fantastic food, great attentive staff and a pleasant dining area all combined to create a great atmosphere and made for a truly wonderful evening. Highly recommended!.

Google says the literal meaning of ni hao is 'you good' - we're not, thanks very much and neither are you.

Fuimos con amigos en la noche del miércoles. Muy pocas personas, pero la comida era muy buena! Entre los cuatro de nosotros teníamos una combinación de china y tailandesa, los cuatro muy contentos al final de la tarde. Recomiendo el pato asado crujiente y el vietnamita de cerdo (en el lado caliente). Mi esposa tenía la sopa Tom Ka talay y nos encantó.

Teníamos la comida más increíble tristemente por un tiempo nos sentamos en nuestro propio. La comida era como digo muy bueno pero difícil juzgar el ambiente en un lugar vacío. Comimos en 1800 supongo que no es el mejor momento.

We had a great meal here last night. It was a busy Friday night and we were lucky to get the last table for two. Really tasty starters and then a complementary bottle of beer as the charming waitress felt the main course might be delayed because the take away service was extremely busy. That is a testimony to the quality of the cooking. The delay was short and the nutty chicken and fish curry were superb. Thank you. We will be back.

A friend took me to Nihao for a eat in Chinese meal, the restaurant is quite small, but very nicely later out, with lots of space between tables. All the food we ordered was excellent, very flavoursome and well presented.The staff were attentive, without being in the way; they allowed a reasonable time between courses.Excellent value for money.note: the toilets are up stairs, if you have mobility issues something to be aware of.

I use the Nihao takeaway all the time, it's always busy and the quality is always great. I'm yet to visit their restaurant but can only imagine the same top quality fare.

An excellent meal and such friendly service made our birthday celebrations a treat. Thank you. A busy restaurant on a Tuesday evening shows its popularity and worth.
