It was one of the very best traditional eateries, but sadly, Nico's has closed its doors for the last time. I can only say 'thank-you' to Theo and his staff for all the excellent, happy and enjoyable meals I've eaten there. You were the best!

This place was well recommended to me by the landlord of the pub at which I'd been drinking. I unreservedly pass along that recommendation. Everything I ate over the course of several days was wonderful. I'm a big eater, but I was struggling a bit with the portions and even couldn't finish my breakfast one morning (a shame for which I heard no end from Theo or my friend Barry. Please do yourself a favor and give Nico's a try.

As recent visitors to London, we happened upon this little restaurant simply because friends live in the nearby area. We noticed a lot of locals seemed to enjoy the place and we loved the 'real England' atmosphere. English breakfast served all day, along with heaps of other wonderful selections. Nothing pretentious, just a board loaded with fabulous menu items. Real English stuff and judging by the portions people were receiving, nobody would dare leave the place hungry! Theo heads up the place his father Nico started. Nico came from Cypress as a teenager and go into the restaurant business, so lucky for us! Sadly Nico passed away recently, but Theo and his wife Androulla, along with chefs Michael and Oxana handled the steady crowd with friendly and capable enthusiasm. When I ordered lamb chops, I was delighted to discover that I actually got my fill of lamb! No delicate little medallions in this restaurant! Platters come heaping and pleasantly served. The food is fast, but it isn't fast food. All comes out of the kitchen as if you were home for the holidays and your Cyprian grandparents were doing all the cooking for the family! My husband had the chicken curry and pronounced it the best he's ever had. My son had roast turkey and veg. My lamb chops were perfect and we hauled food home. As Canadian visitors, our only regret is that we don't have a few more days to go back several times. Do yourself a favour the next time you're really hungry and go to Nico's! Just steps from the Bethnal Green tube station.

Greasy spoon cafe. Big potions (not as big as they use to be in the NOUGHTIES). I recommend the following 6 dishes (in no particular order)1. Kleftico (when he does not make it too salty);2. Steamed Fish3. Liver and Onions with Bubble and Squeak;4. Full English; 5. Pork Chops. and6. Mixed Grill.Toilets are disgusting though. No hot water, soap etc.

You can traverse all 13,000 miles of our grand coastlinE, cross every highway and byway of our great island nation but you will not find ANYWHERE to best the ultimate Great British breakfast experience you get at Nicos in Bethnal Green. Nico never forgets a face or an order and the good solid breakfast fare is all served up at an astoundingly fair six sixty with a mug of tea thrown in. I'm sure everything else on the menu is great but I've never not been able to get past their signature set 1 breakfast or the delicious salt beef, roast potatoes and veg. Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and tell Nico that Paulie sent you.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Nico's is a traditional 'greasy spoon' cafe in the heart of Bethnal Green. I've been going here since 1988 and it hasn't changed at all (I mean that in the good way - the owner does decorate every year; the great service, friendly atmosphere, massive portions and variety of food is what's stayed the same).Nico's is legendary for the large portions of food. That's bad to some people, good to others. But it doesn't skimp on quality, and the range of meals you can get is huge.Sometimes I go for a fry-up, and it's always absolutely amazing: eggs, bacon (well-done of course!), sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, and of course, a free handful of chips with every order. But my real favourites are the recipes from Theo (the owner) and his mum and dad. Coming from the Mediterrainean, they offer Lamb Kleftiko, various stews and casseroles, and three things which are among the most delicious, filling meals I've ever had: chicken casserole, made with a sweet spiciness that's surprising and delicious but not 'hot', spaghetti bolognese, made almost purely with meat and not tomatoes, and cottage pie, made with a rich meat sauce. All of them have the influence of Theo's family's background. That's actually something quite wonderful about immigration. You get a traditional egg and chips cafe, traditional meals like "spaghetti bolognese", mix them up with the heritage of the person whose family was born in another part of the world, and you end up with something unique and delicious.Theo and his staff are incredibly friendly and take the time to get to know you if you're a regular. I'm always shocked that even if I only have a fry-up once a year, Theo will always remember exactly what I want to order. That takes a special dedication to serving your customers. And it's partly why I keep coming back. Bethnal Green is blessed with a large number of traditional cafes, but this one, with its combination of traditional English plus Med-inspired recipes and its owner who makes sure you're happy, stands above every other place.Cafes like this aren't to everyone's taste - but the fact that he's busy almost every day shows how loyal his customers are.Go in there and try the chicken casserole - have it with mashed potato and some cabbage, and you'll see what I mean. And then, next time you're hungover, go in there and get my special hangover cure: 2 eggs on 2 toast (got to be on the toast), 2 sausages, 2 bacon very well done, tinned tomatoes, sliced mushrooms and a few chips. By the time you're done eating it, not only will your hangover be gone, so will most of the day cos it'll take so long to eat such a big meal!

The place is informal and, although everbody is welcome (the owners are very kind), is aimed to local customers which want to have mainly english food, especially english breakfast and other typical courses, mainly meat. The food is good, and the the dishes are large and ...full. Open from morning to seven. Closed on sundays. Recommended.

Where to start? Its a traditional cafe on a busy high street. The furniture is basic, the decor is basic but the food and the atmosphere second to none. The place is used by everyone City office workers, Pensioners, students, builders this hidden gem is a secret shared by many. You will see a slice of London as all its communities share table space. The food is top quality home cooked fare. You get everything from a sandwich to a meal or one of the specials which could be anything. The quantities they serve are huge, but you can ask them for a smaller portion. The staff are great and take the time to chat to customers. It is a must visit place twenty yards from Bethnal green Tube Station so you have no excuse not to go there. But this wonderful Cafe is a secret which we don't want everyone to know about just those who like good food, good service and an experience of the real East end of London.

The friendly proprietor, Theo (son of Nico) will make sure you won't go away hungry. This type of "working-class" (although I am sure frequented by all sorts) cafe is becoming increasingly rare in London which seem to be now dominated by boring chicken shops - so this is a great treat for those who like traditional English cafe grub.
