Narenj in Kingston upon Thames

Amazing. Well worth a visit! We visited on a Thursday evening and had a lovely experience at Narenj. The food was amazing, especially the sharing starter with various dips and bread. Despite other comments left here, the service was efficient and the waitress was very friendly and welcoming. We will certainly be back!!

Hidden in the leafy Kingston, at the riverside, Narenj is a special jewel you have to explore. I got to know about the restaurant from a leaflet at my door. It was a takeaway promotion, but I decided it would be worth to visit, and was very happy with my experience. From a very generous selection of the traditional Persian starters to the mouth watering mains, my dinner didn't disappoint me. My all time favourite became Momtaz - a combo of grilled chicken and minced lamb grill. Accompanied with a local house red it goes well. Since then go every couple of months - food is always fresh and has a nice aroma of mixed herbs.

Terrible. Good service. But terrible food. Ordered the sea bass and after trying a little bit, it was raw inside. Asked for them to recook, it came back burnt on the outside but still raw on the inside. Severe lack of regard from the kitchen. Come back home and between writing this and the toilet, haven’t stopped violently throwing up. Avoid this place at all costs - your health is worth more.

Been here a good few times, as early as 2016. This is one of my favourite restaurants in Kingston. Great value for money in terms of portions and the food is full of flavour! I have something different each time but the Ghormeh sabzi is just superb. If you're a fan of traditional Persian cuisine, this isn't very far off the mark, it's worth the visit. Bonus is you get a great view of the river if you can get a seat in their outer area.

Highly Disappointing Experience My party and I visited Narenj Restaurant last night, and I'm afraid I must share the unfortunate experience we had. It is rare that I feel compelled to write a review, especially a negative one, but in this case, the impact of the situation necessitates it. First and foremost, all four of us ended up with food poisoning. After consuming our meals, we were inflicted with severe nausea and vomiting that has persisted until the present time. As frequent diners, we are all certain that the sickness we've experienced has been a direct result of the food we consumed at Narenj. Upon recognizing our condition, we reached out to the restaurant to report our situation and were met with a complete lack of concern or empathy. We were abruptly hung up on, which we found highly impolite and inappropriate. This is not the level of customer service one would expect from any establishment, let alone a restaurant where food safety is paramount. In light of these incidents, I can't help but question the overall hygiene standards and customer service quality at Narenj Restaurant. I urge future patrons to exercise caution when considering dining here. As for my party and me, we will not be returning, and I cannot recommend this establishment based on our unfortunate experience. One thing I've learned from this is the importance of a restaurant's transparency and accountability towards its customers, two qualities Narenj Restaurant seems to lack, at least from our experience. I hope this review helps future diners make informed decisions, and I hope Narenj Restaurant takes the necessary actions to address these issues.

Fabulous food , friendly staff and great views over the Thames. Smoked aubergine starter- best ever, salad Olivieh delicious, kebabs so succulent. Highly recommended

A lovely relaxing long lunch with the doors open onto the river. The food was simple but excellently cooked and yummy. Very reasonably priced. But most of all the service was genuinely welcoming and charming . A lovely change from fancy overpriced restaurants. Met a woman from Iran the other day who knew this restaurant and went there.

Beautiful riverside setting at the back of the Restaurant which also has an upstairs dining room. Service was not fast but the food was very tasty once it arrived and we were plied with fresh bread and dips whilst we waited

I recently went to Narenj with a group of wel- travelled friends, some of whom had been to Iran. We were delighted by the greeting of the staff, the table (with a view straight over the Thames), and, especially, the food. The waiter was able to explain and describe, with knowledge and enthusiasm, the particular Irani nature of the food. We were very satisfied by the results and would all come again!

We came here to celebrate my dad’s birthday. The staff were friendly and attentive, despite being really busy. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed their meal. We will definitely return.

My friends and I really enjoyed the food and the ambience of the restaurant. One of the staff there was particular knowledgeable and friendly. He recommended us lovely Persian tea andessert. Their meat grills, and especially the aubergine dips were second to none. We would definitely go back again.

Great place with very good customer service. Nice food quality, fresh meat and fantastic drinks! I should thank Shila, one of the staff, who made us a memorable day there by her charming characteristic and kind hospitality. Highly recommended.

Today we were in Kingston for a shopping trip and afterwards a meal, we hadn’t decided where we would go so just started checking out what was on offer. We passed many chain restaurants that didn’t inspire us at all, then I noticed Narenj. Never eaten Persian food but love anything Mediterranean so we walked in. Immediately we were greeted warmly by our server Neda who showed us to a table by a window overlooking the Thames, lovely. I asked for a non alcoholic beer and Neda brought me a chilled bottle of Istak a malt beverage with a hint of lemon, it was really nice! We chose a sharing main that consisted of skewered lamb, chicken and minced lamb, salad, rice, flat bread and roasted tomatoes. This was so lovely, the meats were marinated and tender, all cooked over charcoal that makes such a difference as it’s the authentic way to cook this type of food adding a wonderful flavour. For dessert we chose a Persian pistachio and chocolate cake and Persian ice cream made with pistachios, rose water and saffron all rounded off with a perfect cup of Persian coffee. This was such an unexpected pleasure on all levels, we are definitely coming back and bringing friends and family. If you enjoy the flavours of the Mediterranean and appreciate authenticity served food with warm hospitality you will fall in love with Narenj. Thank you so much Neda and your colleagues for a most enjoyable experience.

I had the chicken on the bone with Persian bread. It was very disappointing. Served as just bread, chicken wings, a tomato and a chilli. The dish was very dry, no yoghurt or other accompaniments. I would have been better going to the local kebab shop. I won’t be returning.

It was my first time here and turned out as a nice surprise: tasty and fresh food, friendly staff, not too pricey. I’d definitely visit again.

Worst barg I have ever had. Meat was hard to cut and totally unchewable, when complained Manager couldn't careless and refused to replace the food. He didn't even have the courtesy to come to our table and face us. Zero customer relations skill. The bargs...

I gave 1 star for the waitress only. Kebab makhsos was £20 a head. Quality of meat was below zero. It was like a peace of leather. Impossible to chew it. Complaint to manager but he was so rude and he said that,s it.! Instead...

Came here for lunch with a colleague so agreed in advance that we would just have a main. When I revisit I will make sure I have time for three courses! The ambience was great and the service very quick. I had the freshly squeezed apple juice and my colleague liked it so much he then ordered one for himself.He had the Makhsous and said that the lamb in particular was beautifully cooked and really tender. I had Fesenjoon which I had never tried before but was an amazing voyage of taste discovery. First the tangy sweetness of the pomegranate then the deep earthy walnut, the chicken was melt in the mouth tender. The gentleman attending to us was very keen to know if I had enjoyed it so it was great to let him know just how delicious I found it. I would certainly have it again but they have so many lovely dishes on the menu that would be hard to find anywhere else that I will be spoiled for choice. A great place to eat, we'll be back!

First visit, pleasant atmosphere. Starter of humous, naan and ghasemi delicious. Sea bass cooked nicely, shish kebab generous. Ice cream and baghlava to finish. Reasonably priced wine.

I booked a table for 11 for lunch during the August Bank Holiday and the table and booking went smoothly. Staff were very friendly and looked after the group very well. The starters and main courses were very tasty and the entire group enjoyed them immensely. Overall a very good experience and we look forward to returning. A couple of areas for improvement- on a bank holiday weekend to be told that they only had 1 bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc left is a little poor given the restaurant must know it will be busy all weekend and indeed it was busy.- to order a mixed Mezze starter at £14 and be told that the bread is charged extra is not really acceptable. This policy needs to be reviewed - and not simply increasing prices!

We came for an early evening meal having booked a table and alerted them to the fact that we'd be using a discount code. The deal was offered in partnership with The Times, which listed this restaurant as offering 20% off the bill every day of the week. We told them that we'd be using our discount card, and they emailed to confirm the booking.We got there and had a nice meal. We shared some hummus and bread, which was nicely made even if I've had better hummus for less money. The grilled meats were really the star of the show - I really enjoyed the joojeh and my girlfriend ordered a lamb and chicken grill that was also really tasty. The food was really well made and at 20% off you couldn't really complain.The issue arose when we told our server that we were using a discount card. He went to confirm with the manager, until he returned and told us that they offered no form of discount and that they would not honour the deal. I showed my discount card to our server, proving that the deal existed with the restaurant. He went back to the manager, and came back telling me that the restaurant did not offer the discount on a Saturday. This was not true either, as the terms and conditions clearly set out. I asked our server if he could please send the manager to our table so that we could discuss the issue personally with him. Only then did our server come back to tell us that (just this once!) they would honour the deal to which they'd willingly signed up to. He reiterated that the manager had told him that the deal did not exist, as apparently they did not have the technology to read discount codes. This was obviously not the case. The restaurant is clearly listed as having an agreement with The Times on the newspaper's own website, offering 20% discount seven days a week to subscribers who book ahead of time.For as much as the food was enjoyable, it was unacceptable for the management to treat us with such dishonesty. He didn't even have the decency to face us personally, instead relying on a young (and exceptionally polite) member of the service staff to relay information to us. If you want to get customers through your door by offering a discount, the only decent thing is to honour your side of the bargain. I won't be giving them any more custom for exactly this reason.

I went last week and I’m still talking about the quality of the food, incredible. Meet was well cooked. Flavours for days. Highly recommend.

We have visited Narenj before last year and we really enjoyed our experience and the wraps. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case this time. We visited for lunch and the service was incredible slow. First, they brought us some chips for starters when we mentioned to bring with the rest of the food. Between the starter and the main course they took over half an hour, even though we mentioned a couple of this to the waitress to please bring our food. They even served other customers who got there after us! Shocking. We ordered a falafel wrap and a meat wrap, and while waiting I went to the 'cooking area' and actually so someone making the wraps. We waited so long that by the time our wraps arrived the 'wrap bread' was all dry and flaky. Disgusting. I refused to eat it. The worst bit was that when I mentioned to the waitress she said that that's how Persian bread is. Ridiculous. We won't be coming back.

Great setting, would image it has a lovely cosy feel at night, Service was very good, we are a mature couple, there was a table nearby with 5 energetic children running around which took the edge off the meal but the server asked if we wanted to be moved to the outer seating area which overlooked the river and was covered (heavy rain!) he tried to keep the children out of this area, my chips could have been hotter so I asked to have them reheated but he insisted on bringing me fresh ones. The food was very tasty and good size portions, at lunchtime there is a cheaper lunchtime menu so very good value too. Would recommend and would return in the future.

This is a nice place overlooking the river if the weather is fine. The food we have had before and it is still well cooked Persian food. The dishes are very tasty and it was a very pleasant meal. The only thing was they said we HAD to pay the service charge of 10%, which could be expensive if there’s only 2 of you and you had bottles of wine and all 3 courses.

We ate dinner at Narenj, food was very good with generous portion sizes and great value. We particularly enjoy eating the freshly baked Naan bread with hummus.

Ordered 2 meals for Saturday lunch, only 3 other tables eating. Waitress was slow and unattentive. Forgot our order, came back to clarify 10 mins after. Got my order wrong. I had finished my meat by the time they brought my bread out. Rice was mushy, meat lacked flavour. Won't be returning. I've never left a bad review for anywhere. But this place was bad.

My son lives in Kingston & visits this restaurant quite often! Food was good with excellent service & prices reasonable for the location. We shared mezze for starters which included humus, and very tasty aubergine dip. Again for the main course we ordered 4 meals & shared, lamb fillet & kofta, prawns & chicken, served with saffron rice. Lamb fillet was particularly very good & all 4 present enjoyed the meal. Shame the weather was poor as the tables out of the back look out onto the Thames!

Very busy , had to wait 15minutes to be seated. All was compensated by Food - excellent, service- excellent & price- reasonable.

Ordered the chelo kebab which was cooked to perfection and served with a generous portion of rice , and also ordered the Khoreshte Bamiye which tasted amazing. It’s very hard to find an Iranian restaurant that can cook stews like khoreshteh bamiye well , but honestly it tasted just like traditional home made cooking!! Will definitely be returning again !

The food has improved since I ate here several years ago. Good selection of familiar and more interesting Middle Eastern food, in a pleasant restaurant. Handy for Rose Theatre. Service was very good. Dessert options are a bit limited. We had baclava which was fine but not amazing.

We travelled from Harlow, Romford & High Barnet to eat this place. Ordered food and waited over 1 hour for a Platter for 2, Momtaz x2, Chips & Hummous. Mains came but no hummous so we cancelled the Starter. Between 4 of us we were given 1-1.5 teaspoons of Chilli sauce. We asked a waiter for more - who never came back. We asked waiteress for more sauce - who never came back too. We patiently waited 5 mins whilst our food was getting cold and decided to go to the counter and ask for it and were told to sit down and that someone would come over with the sauces. We then asked another waiter for another fizzy drink - who too, never came back. We then asked a waitress, who returned with our drink. We finished our meal that was bland, the portions were very small and stingy.

We caught up with some of our Persian family for a Nowruz dinner. There was a mix up with our booking - so we had to sit in the separate area at the back. At first I was concerned it was going to be cold - especially as the door had to be opened & closed continually, but gradually more people came in so it was fine. We all agreed the food was excellent. Minor things - my daughter commented the joojeh was a little dry and the gormeh sabzi a little salty - but these are very minor. The bread is baked onsite (as it should be!), the appetisers delicious and the portions very generous - the kids still managed to eat most of their food! Excellent service and lovely atmosphere. When we first came when it opened there was no salad olivieh - we were pleased it is on the menu now! We will be back. Nowruz Mubarak!

After eating at all of the middle eastern restaurants in Kingston this is still my favourite. The quality and consistency of the food is great. On this visit I ordered the koubideh and shared a starter of Persian naan with homous and an aubergine dish with my wife.

Me and my husband arrived for dinner fairly early in the evening. The restaurant was quiet but the atmosphere was still lively and staff were so welcoming.

Food here is very tasty- the meat is succulent and flavoursome. Service is great too, with helpful and friendly staff. We often get a takeaway from here if we cannot eat-in.

We tried this restaurant for the first time on a cold and rainy day. The staff were very friendly and welcoming (and funny as well). The food was good, we aren't strangers to Persian food and this was up there with some of the best (the rice dishes were excellent). If you want to give alcohol a miss, the Dough is really pretty good, not too salty and with a hint of lemon and thyme.

Food was awful specialy zereshkpolo with chicken, food colour instead of saffron, chicken was overcooked,it was tasteless.

I booked a table last Saturday for myself and my partner and I must say the food was spectacular! Very tasty, fresh And very filling!!!! ...The staff were very friendly and attentive .. always catering to our needs.. very homely feeling... it’s the first time we came to this restaurant and we would definitely keep coming again :) it’s my birthday in 2 weeks and already planning to come with the family.

This is in the middle of Kingston with parking round the corner but has the feel of a neighbourhood restaurant which is popular with family groups. Wonderful food- grilled lamb and saffron rice and efficient friendly service. We'll be back!

We just had a lovely evening at Narenj. The service and food were great. The staff were attentive and very pleasant. The food was fresh and aromatic and very good value. I’m glad we found this restaurant and would recommend it.

The best Iranian resturant in the UK. Much better than the famous colbeh of London. Real authentic Adasi, super houmous and nan, Koobideh was super the mixed grill was good. Must end with the Paloodeh and the Persian tea. Outstanding service like a small family run business. Will be visiting more often. A must when in the area. OUTSTANDING.

A top class restaurant in Kingston Upon Thames. Food quality, portion size, cleanliness is superb. The restaurant has very welcoming staff whose cordial welcome instantly make you feel that you have been to this place before. Not a traditional around the corner Kebab shop. Highly recommended place for a lovely dinner/lunch. Parking at the rose theatre parking is a plus which puts you on ease as well.

We had a fantastic Persian Sunday lunch at Narenj on Sunday 23 September 2018. In my opinion Narenj is one of the best Persian restaurants in the Kingston area. The food is always excellent and the service is fantastic. The food tastes just like my Mum’s food (sorry Mum) but I am definitely satisfied and will be coming back!

I came here for a meal on a Monday evening as I've just moved to the area. One of the servers was pleasant enough. The other strangely put our starter on the other side of the table, and just left the tray of drinks on our table, rather than passing the drinks to us.

It used to be the best restaurant in the area, and the best persian restaurant in London. BUT, it has now been more than 6 months, things have changed unfortunately. I dont know if its the owner that has changed, but the portions are now smaller, the prices have gone up and the quality of the food is not as good as before. Also staff is not reliable. I called for a table reservation and by the time I went there they did not put my name down! Also, recently I called for a delivery order, but that never came and calling them again the person that I called for my order didnt put it on the system!!!!! Such a poor and unreliable service. I used to come here a lot before, but unfortunately I am not planning to come here again. Shame!

Excellent fresh food, authentic Persian cuisine. Cannot fault it. Only thing to critise the rice portion for my dish was abit small. Very good location. Soft meat, not over powering with lemon like other places. Love love this place. Everyone must pay them a visit

This is the best Persian restaurant that I have tried in the Kingston area. The food is not only aromatic and flavorful, but skillfully cooked. The restaurant has an exceptional grilling chef and the meat tastes succulent. The portions are a very good size and the variety of dishes authentically Persian. The service is also brilliant by attentive staff.

We ordered takeaway via Deliveroo the food was as good as when we have ordered it the restaurant apart from it didn't come with the chilli and garlic sauce that you normally get in the restaurant.

Had a wonderful meal here. Never tried Persian cuisine before but will certainly return here. The food was excellent and even praised by my Iranian sister-in-law as truly authentic. Was also impressed by the friendly and efficient staff. Our waiter took our full order for 3 courses for 5 people and never made a note of what we wanted, committing it all to memory. Everything was served just as we requested. Very impressed, will certainly return again.

We dined at Narenj for the first time last night and it was brilliant. Our mezze starters were delicious as were our main courses. Portions are generous and the menu has a wide range of dishes to choose from. We found the service to be very attentive though out the meal.

I have been going quite frequently to Narenj for over 3 years now and within the last year it has progressively got worse and worse, the portions have got smaller and smaller and the prices have went up and up and now it is overpriced for what it is. But, last night was the final straw. Bare in mind it was not very busy in there the restaurant wasn’t even half full.

We went as a family to celebrate my cousin sisters birthday. The atmosphere seemed nice as soon as I walked in. Modern looking place with a indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating was next to the river which Is the ONLY plus point.

my husband & I have been to Narenj several times now, & each time the food is good if over priced but the service has been poor. Our most recent visit on Saturday evening when the restaurant was half full,was unfortunately an example of the poor and on this occasion unacceptably rude service. The food at Narenj is very good but I wont be returning.

The food was 10/10! We ordered the mixed grill platter and it was more than enough for two adults and two children. The riverside view 100%. Sadly the shisha bar was closed that Saturday but I look forward to coming back for a cocktail, shisha and of course the river Thames. Service was also superb! After you can take a walk into town along the river. Everyone’s out drinking and having a good time.

We visited Narenj for lunch. Our food was freshly made in front of us including freshly baked naans. The grills were delicious we had both the chicken and the lamb kebab. They have good choices for kids too including fresh juices. The service was very friendly, fast and accommodating all our needs.

We were looking for a really good Persian place having had great cuisine in other places. After walking past Narenj a few times and seeing some great reviews we decided to give it a go on Sunday. We sat on the decking as it was a beautiful day. Shame that it’s boxed in by Steins beer garden. We found the service quite poor and it wasn’t busy - when we left we realised the staff were watching the football. We ordered hummus to start and the waiter asked if we wanted bread with it - seems it doesn’t come with it. Not an issue but the portion of hummus was very small. We then ordered the mixed grill for one with rice. I admit we didn’t read the description on the menu clearly but this turned out to just be 1 skewer of chicken and 1 skewer of lamb. Whilst there was a good amount of meat and it tasted good we didn’t feel it really equated to a mixed grill - in many other places you get a much better selection. It wasn’t cheap either at £17.99 not good value for money. We would have been much better going for the mixed grill for 2 and sharing as then you get more variety. The sugar free Persian beer was good!

A fabulous lunch, food great setting great and service was good. It reason I knocked a star was the lack of wine cooler. Everything else was great. The lamb skewers were gorgeous, so was the salad starter with feta.

This until recently was the only Persian Resaurant in Kingston area, only glad to say in terms of food, fstill the best thus far. Hope it keeps up . We tried the new one and food was not as good. The location is perfect and the riverside seating is added bonus and even in the winter inside is cosy and pleasant. My favourite in this place is the “Aash Reshteh” which is some special noodle and pulses (mixed beans) soup and is just like home made trust me. The other favourite is the Koobideh (minced meat) kebeb and rice which is very good though I have better ones in London, but nevertheless satisfying at Naarenj. Over a period of time we have had various dishes and starters and all ok to try and find one that you like more than the others . Prices are not too bad either. We keep going back as our local !

Have been here a few times staff are great ambience is great and on a sunny day beautiful river views. Panir-Sabzi👍👍, Koobideh or Koobideh Wrap excellent value at £4.95.

Narenj is my favourite middle eastern restaurant in Kingston, the food is very good with good portion sizes and it is also very good value. Its normally possible to get a table without a reservation and some of the seating overlooks the Thames.

Fab hidden gem in Kingston. Just the place to go to sit on the terrace, and take in the river views. Brilliant houmous. Good range of salads. Tasty grilled chicken. It's all so fresh and we love it.

First time trying a Persian restaurant, lovely nice surprise. The staff were lovely and friendly, they gave us an iPad with all the dishes on it to help us chose our food which was a great idea. Watching the chefs making the food and bread at the front of the restaurant was really interesting and fun. The restaurant had a nice, friendly vibe to it. Would recommend anyone to give Persian food a try and in particular Narenj restaurant.

One of the best restaurants in Kingston. Proper and tasty food, a bit expensive. Service is ok. Will come back.

This is one of the best local restaurants in kingston. Always great quality food and great prices. Lots of interesting dishes always tasty . So great to be able to go to a restaurant that isn't a chain . Desserts are a must !!! Lovely location on the river .....

Went here for an impromptu lunch by myself. Absolutely delicious food and a lovely feel to the place.Kingston has so many chain restaurants (many of which are struggling) that it makes a nice change to find Narenj a little independent is still going strong. The added bonus being it is in such a good position...if you can get a table to the rear you will have lovely views of the Thames.

I was visiting a friend and we were out shopping in Kingston and decided to try this restaurant for a change. It was like going back in time, the decor and atmosphere, however the food was fresh and clean, we both had lamb kebab with salad and rice, and size of the serving was just right and it was very tasty. It would be good to go back on a hot day and sit overlooking the river. Maybe another time.

Popped into Narenj with my husband for Friday lunch .

We really liked the smell wafting from the restaurant....reminding us of those halcyon summer days of BBQing. They have the BBQ behind a glass screen. We had humous and nan to start, followed by the mixed grill platter for two. It was huge, even for my strapping son who loves his meat. We couldn't finish it. It was served with a small salad. Was delicious, even without the chili sauce (which the waiter forgot to bring). Bill came to £36.36, including drinks (although we were only drinking sparking water)
