Mumbai Inn in Leicester

Curry houses in Leicester when it's an evening Tigers home game are all going to be in demand, but all the other ones we've tried seem to cope with a pre-match influx. Not the Mumbai Inn, it seems. Whether it was greed in taking far too many early evening bookings or just chaotic management, our evening was not great . The table wasn't ready on time, the staff were trying to slow things down so the kitchen could cope, half of our party of 6 couldn't have their first menu choice as we were told that these dishes ' took too long' to prepare, so they'd decided not to offer them that night, and when we complained about the eye-watering raw onion served with 2 dishes, ( and nothing else!) the waiter seemed un- empowered to pass on this comment to the management, so on top of waiting 70 minutes for our food, no-one came and apologised. Result ? 6 unhappy diners who won't be returning and I suspect several more at other tables who I observed leaving their meals half eaten in order to get to the match start.

Was staying local and found this restaurant at the end of the street, with it being early doors (17:30) I was the frist customer. the restaurant is bright warm and welcoming, the staff give plenty of time to veiw the menu. The food was very tasty with lots of flavours , price wise and found it to be value for money , was expecting more with it being on a main road near the town centre.

Really friendly restaurant popular with locals too. Some different choices on the menu which we enjoyed. Would recommend.

I met up with a load of old work colleagues/friends last night, not leaving the pub until late, and we decided to see if anywhere was open where we could get a curry. We made it to Mumbai Inn at around 11:45pm, and although it was due to close at midnight, they let the six of us in without complaint, were very courteous and pleasant, were prompt with the service (we agreed to be quick in return for allowing us in), and served up the best curry I have tasted in years. All of us were extremely happy with our orders and the excellent hospitality. Will definitely return. Thank you.

It is my 1st visit here.The restaurant itself is huge and nice inside.We had a warm welcome with all the staff being friendly and inviting.We ordered poppadoms and pickles then had a starter and mains with rice and nan and chapati.Also 5 alcolic drinks and 2 coffees.The bill was just over 100 pound which I thought was reasonably priced.The food was quite tasty.Didnt have any complaints about the food, but it wasn't really delicious.However would come back again. Parking is a bit hit and miss though.

Just a cracking place beautiful food and atmosphere. Our first time loved it so much came back and was immediately recognised by staff saying thankyou for the great review. I as usual has Momo starter, n my partner had chicken shashlik. We then went onto chicken madras and chicken kahria I think. The peshawari naans are the best. The service here impeccable. I think it will be a regular haunt for us. Couldn't recommend enough. Brilliant service from everyone.

We travel from Aylesbury to visit our son in Leicester and always head for the Mumbai. Love the food.

A regular haunt of mine when I was staying over on business in Leicester before the pandemic, I was curious to know how the restaurant had fared on my return to the city after 4 years, this time with my wife on a social trip. The signs were good from the start - the same friendly staff, relaxed ambience - and it was very pleasing to note that the Mumbai Inn is continuing to serve food of the same high quality. A particular longstanding favourite of mine is the seafood miss mass and I was delighted that my recommendation of this dish to my wife turned out to be a good one. I opted for the matcha masala, and it too hit all the right notes. For a top quality Indian meal in a very comfortable and welcoming restaurant, I cannot recommend the Mumbai Inn highly enough.

We love a good indian, and googled recommendations, most didn't cater to our tastes. I like to experience different things, my partners a madras vindaloo person. We sat down looked at menu, ordered starters, Momo for me, omg divine, and Prawn puri for my partner. Mains were chicken madras, aloo, keema naan, I ordered lamb gurkhali pilau rice and peshawari naan. Omg again beautiful cooking, flavours amazing, my naan had actually seen the inside of the tandoor and had charred bits, of which I love, and the inside didn't crumble and fall out every where, the lamb was sooo tender, the sauce, I could taste every spice, food made with love and care. My partner loved his Madras too of which I had to sample of course. We've found a great Indian at last as most just do jalfrezi korma madras or tikka masala. Others food looked great too. The dessert menu lots of choice. Shall definitely be back. The service was excellent too. Thankyou guys.

Disappointing. The food was OK but really not very special with lots of dishes tasting the same. The portions were very small - 6 pieces of lamb in a lamb tikka for £13 is ridiculous. Staff were pleasant enough but if you know your food you will be disappointed

Lovely food, good service. Toilets need an update - seats would be good! However if I was in Leicester again I would definitely visit.

Friday,stayed at Belmont Hotel about 100m away. Ideal! (A late decision!) My wife and I shared a lovely meal with great tastes and excellent service. On Saturday we moved to the hotel at Leicester City as this was previously booked. Grandson playing rugby at Welford Road on Saturday morning followed by being joined by daughter and our son in law to watch Leicester v Harlequins. ‘I really fancy an Indian’ they said!! We had a great one last night!!!! The result, a half time booking and more excellent food and service. A double delight!!!

Worst place I ever been. We are vegetarian, we ordered paneer and some drinks as a starter. They took chicken on our table. When we realise thats chicken we call waiter then he react like stranger, he said oh its chicken!!! No apologies nothing. Same with drinks as well, we ordered whiskey he didn’t ask ur what we’ll take with it. He took orders and just put on the table. About that paneer starter they took so long we just lost our appetite. Waiter said if you cant wait then they can bring starters and mains together. Like whats the meaning of starter then !? Moreover quantity was so less compare to money. We felt so bad. Our bill was around £115. When we finishe they took bill within a minute but they took so long for food as we noticed restaurant wasn’t really so busy that time. Waste of day and time, staff need to pay more concentration as they even didnt took empty plated from our table ao we can use more space. In between we need to always look behind and look for staff so we can inform them that they should took plates away so we can use more space. Not recommended to anyone.

I am so surprised to see so many bad reviews lately, I wasn’t expecting to see any. We visit Mumbai Inn for a while with work colleagues and also family and friends, just went again tonight and the service, atmosphere and food are always spot on. Keep up the great work!

Booked to eat here before going to see a show at The De Montfort Hall. (Jack Whitehall - incase you’re interested!) The food was fab!! We had poppadoms, a curry each, rice and naans all really great quality and for a good price. I always judge a place on the cleanliness of the toilets and here, they were immaculate! The staff and the level of service was excellent too. Honestly I couldn’t fault it and would recommend to everyone. Give them a try 😊

Booked online two weeks earlier and fortunately checked by phone as there was no booking.It was only 50% occupied at 7 pm but did fill up. The food was excellent, it’s the 3rd time we’ve been. We’d also booked 21st October but they had no record. He checked his bookings and there was only one booking on 21st. We booked for 7 pm and were told we might have to wait???!! One other booking that night. We’re staying at the Belmont 50 metres away and the food is very good so we will come back.

These guys were so rude to me and my family. The service was awful all night and the food was disgusting. Don’t waste your time. They refused to allow my family to use the customer toilets because of their race. I’m in shock at how awful this experience was. I’ve been to thousands of restaurants and never been treated this way

Without doubt the worst restaurant I have ever visited. Service was shocking,took half an hour to get a drink and menu,another hour to get starters, food very poor. Was looking forward to my vist to Leicester to see family and enjoy a lovely night out, what a dreadful shame I picked this restaurant. Do not vist,avoid at all cost!!!!!

Worst Indian I have ever been to. Took 30 minutes before we were asked for our drinks order and even given a food menu,45 minutes before they took our food order which resulted in starters arriving 90 minutes after we arrived. It wouldn't have been too bad if the food was delicious but it wasn't. They couldn't even deliver what was ordered. 12 poppadoms were ordered and charged for but only 6 arrived, a rice dish short and a terrible salad which wasn't worth the money. Substandard food and terrible service was the order of the day. Avoid!

There were 4 of us and this was our first visit. We liked it didn't feel corporate. We had a lovely evening and enjoyed our food. We liked the atmosphere. Will definitely visit again.

I don’t get how this place received the kinda reviews that it did. None of the dishes were anything to write home about esp given the price tag on every one of them! I don’t mind paying premium if the quality reflects it but sadly, it didn’t. Perhaps my growing up in India plays some part in that judgement but v unlikely as I’ve really enjoyed other leicester curry houses! To top it all off, they charged us for the takeaway box for us to pack the rest of our food that my kids had barely touched! The waiters and the atmosphere was good and there’s honestly no complaints there but, I don’t think I’d recommend this place or come back again.

The taste is very very very goood. We were here this place 20 years ago (the tiffin restaurant back in that time). The manner and respect have not changed att all. Anyone wanting indian food in Leicester definetely should come to this place. We stronlgly advice sizling tikka and madras curry to taste

Went here for a family meal last Christmas. Food was okay, but the service was atrocious. It took ages to get anyone’s attention, and it seemed only one person was allowed to take orders. Another couple came in, and again were ignored by staff. When they asked why someone hadn’t come take their drinks order in over 30 mins, staff turned hostile and started arguing with them. Have no idea what’s going on here, but it’s shoddily managed. Avoid like the plague, there are plenty more decent restaurants worth your time and money in Leicester - these guys just don’t care.

Absolutely appalling owner and so rude it beggars belief. Whilst we were there another customer started commenting to the owner of his shocking attitude. Stay away from this place. Shocking.

Really good food. Chicken Madras was hot, but not too hot. Full of flavour and beautifully moist. Tikka masala was delicious. Reasonably priced too

What a shame, was really looking forward to going until we got there ordered a Cobra which came completly flat not one to cause drama but flat beer is not the one, we were told 'the boss' will come and take the order, after telling him the drink was flat took max 2 sips he kicked off slamming onto the Glass to generate bubbles which they would even with a flat drink with that level of hit and would not stop arguing that he knows better never had that happen to me before shame because the food was good, think twice before your so rude to customers because only for that reason i would NEVER recommend the place!

Once again superb food. Impeccable friendly service Mumbai Inn is a highly recommended. All of my family and friends who have tried have become regulars. A rare gem of an Indian eatery at quite reasonable prices.

The service in this place is shocking... After a 30min wait to be seated, a further 25mins for a waiter to take our order, we Waited 1hr 15 min for our starter to arrive then a further 45min for our mains.... The food itself was very nice, but they don't seem to have a scooby in getting people served.

We walked in and hadn’t booked. The staff seemed a bit hostile like they didn’t want us in there. We sat down and about 15mins later they decided to take our order but just for drinks and popdum even im telling im ready to order starters but told wait and he will come back for order We sat a further till waiter come with all this attitude that im being rude and after 15min of arguments we decide we don't want to dine anymore but want to see the manager So for manager we been told we have to go to bar and been given bill for our drink and popdum when we been on bar the manager wasn't available and this random guy came and ask what's the problem at end he never acknowledged the problem but said if you want to pay its OK if not than go and we said we only pay for the drink which been finished the rest all is on table we not paying for that as its not fair and he gat annoyed that we not paying and start talking rude and at end we just walked out without paying hope it teach them lesson as if they lost money we have lost our time and good evening mood so.... The attitude and communication from staff was very poor.If possible I should gave them 0 Star 🌟

Been visiting the Mumbai Inn for a number of years and visited twice in the past few weeks…….. It only gets better. A warm welcome, great service and staff and the food quality is outstanding. Already looking forward to my next visit.

So after walking past this a good few times we thought we’d give this place a try after seeing all the awards they had on display. We walked in and hadn’t booked. The staff seemed a bit hostile like they didn’t want us in there.The staff told us that it would be an hour wait to be seated as they were fully booked although it was clear that there were lots of tables about to finish. They tried to get get us to go but we decided to wait, after about 10min it’s tables started to leave and reluctantly took us to our seats. We sat down and about 15mins later they decided to take our. We sat a further hour till we tried to get their attention to ask how long till our food would come but to no avail. Another customer saw us trying to get their attention so she decided to get them for us which the waiter seemed to be annoyed about this. In total we waited an hour for our food. The attitude and communication from staff was very poor. However the food was really nice and I’d give that a 4/5 rating. Due to the rudeness and abrupt attitude from staff I’ve marked them down. Maybe they were stressed that night etc but I personally wouldn’t go here again due to the service.

Been here many times but tonight may be the last, Went earlier than normal and more staff than customers so served immediately. Popadoms and drinks arrived quickly and then a few minutes later the starter arrived, it seemed like they were trying to rush us which is quite annoying so we asked the staff member not to bring main meal out for a short while. They were obviously watching us and the meal arrived as we took the last mouthful of the starter. The waiter did say that the meal had been ready so had bought it out promptly which wouldn’t have been a major problem other than it lost its temperature not long after it had been served.We ate it without complaint as we were hungry but it was not enjoyable. Staff started clearing table before we had finished eating which is also very annoying. Refused dessert and went to bar to pay bill. Explained to manager that food was nowhere near as good as the many previous visits, he said that food had not been served in in preheated dishes then obviously had stood waiting to be served, hence the drop in temperature and he then told staff member not to do this to other food waiting to be served. I did not ask for refund or reduction but was not even given a sincere apology. I have waited a few hours to post this very negative review as we have had many decent meals here but money is hard earned and going out to eat is a treat now and I regret spending anything there this time. Consistency is one of the reasons we travel to this place but feel very let down not only with the food but also the response to my complaint. I would normally recommend this place to anyone and do on a regular basis, I note that manager does not respond to reviews but do invite his comments to this one as I would not like this to have been my last visit.

Ate here twice in two weeks as we were seeing shows at De Montfort Hall, about a 10 minute walk away. On both occasions, we ate early on a week night (around 6pm), so it was inevitably pretty quite, hence I can't give a 5 star for atmosphere. I thought the food was excellent, served in nice copper/metal dishes. I had butter paneer, pilau rice, naan, black lentil daal and chilli paneer. They were all delicious. Will definitely visit again when next going to De Montfort Hall.

Me and my friends were very hungry and decided to go out for dinner. It was just 9:30pm and we decided to go to Mumbai inn looking at how many awards it had received. Unfortunately the restaurant manager welcomed us with a serious face making us feel uninvited and unwanted. He made us wait next to the bar and place order before he took us to our table, which was very insulting for my friends and I. Regardless, we thought those awards were given for the food and not for the poor hospitality, we decided to stick around. To our surprise the food was very bland and had no salt in it. The biryani was served with dal. I mean who serves chicken biryani with dal? Also fresh orange juice wasn't what I thought it was. He poured it out of a tetra pack. When we told the manager the food doesn't have salt, instead of asking what was wrong and taking to the kitchen and fixing it he started arguing saying that this same rice is used to make multiple dishes hence there's no salt. Fried rice didn't have salt, biryani didn't have salt, and also the jumping prawns didn't have salt. Everything was just bland and not at all edible. We had to finish our food just because we were starving and paid for this overpriced and overrated dishes and also because the manager refused to take it back inside. I highly recommend you not to go to this restaurant, this isn't what Indian cuisine tastes like. Please don't mistake this restaurant for an Indian restaurant. This behavior is very poor, disgusting, and also very disrespectful. The waiter wasn't rude but was helpless because of the manager's behavior.

Visited on Valentine’s Day and as EVER food exceptional. Service quick and friendly by a team of efficient waiters. ALWAYS a warm welcome by the owner. Can’t recommend the Mumbai enough!

As usual, friendly welcome by the happy chappy and the boss. The food is always spot on and delicious. Never rushed, we just sat chatting when we’ve finished. 10/10 A few days later, I fetched a takeaway. It’s a longer drive but well worth it....

Worst dining experience of all time in Leicester. Haven't had food so bad in anywhere. Overpriced, poor service, waiting staff have literally 0 patience. Would not recommend anyone. Had chicken tikka, chicken lolly , chilli chicken, prawns biryani, chicken biryani, bhuna chicken, tawa chicken. No taste in all of them not worth it at all. 1/10 only for coke. Highly NOT RECOMMENDED !

First time visiting and wasn't disappointed, food had flavour and tasted good. Not like some were all the dishes taste the same! Salmon Tikka is amazing 👏 Will definitely go back for more...

We called the number given to book the restaurant table for 2 on 29 jan how ever the attendant was so rude rather then saying we are closed xx started asking what it is written on google and what does it means like it takes the same time to say we are closed politely Please be polite it takes the same effort

Have to rate below average. Confusing experience, firstly it's Nepalese food not Indian yet called Mumbai Inn, Mumbai to nepal is approx 1700 km so why confuse diners as they find out when handed menus. Second the menu has a large array of dishes most have not heard of but help wasn't really forthcoming when we asked for it. Both myself and my friend asked for the dishes to be made spicy and akin to madras strength indian and I asked specifically for fresh green chili to be added to mine.. this didn't happen and all dishes were medium at best and casserole like. Service was average too and nobody did a check back to see how the food was. The starters were so small it was laughable, a 4.99 chicken starter was served as two tikka sized chunks with a drizzle of sauce for instance. I asked about lamb before ordering the tawa and was told theirs was excellent .. it really wasn't, neck I would assume or frozen iceland style chunks, chewy and fatty in places. It was freezing in there and we had to keep our coats on throughout dining. The staff then got their coats on around 10.30 and hovered around our area, no desert options offered or coffee etc just the bill and even then we weren't asked how things were which is a shame. It is not cheap eats either, at perhaps 20% more than other Indian restaurants on the same road. I would not recommend or return.

Service was unattentave considering the lack of people in the restaurant was expecting alot more based on the reviews but was disappointed. All 3 mains we had was very nutty and tasted off from what we was expecting. The jalfrezi was mild and dansak was spicier than the jalfrezi which was surprising and unexpected, the korma was extremely nutty and bland not the coconut creamy sweet taste my son was expecting as normal from what we have had from many Indian restaurants around the UK, although we appreciate some Indians have different authenticity, we personally did not enjoy the flavours presented. Was anticipating alot more based on the reviews we read and was expensive considering the lack of flavour and service provided this evening. Spending as much as we did for 3 people for the food and service we recieved was disappointing!

Terrible service. We booked a table in advance, upon arrival the staff was very rude. When tried to order they made unreasonable minimum order requirements. I was asked to order 1 full gravy, 1 starters, 2 portions of bread per person. This was not only to sell more dishes but to make a huge bill. So much food and money would have been wasted. On denying to order such huge amounts they asked us to leave. For someone who doesn't have idea of portion size..... one gravy portion is sufficient for two people. This was really embarrassing for me and my guests. Please do not visit this place

Very bad service .. They only serve big group with a minimum quantity of order compelling to eat more or instead waste the food ! Don’t visit if your appetite is small! The behaviour of the staff was rude too.

Extremely pleasant staff and a delicious meal. It’s rare to have an experience this good.

From the very beginning I had a bad experience from the way they welcomed us, the staff including the manager except for just one guy there being very judgemental giving weird stares as if we were doing some sketchy stuff! I felt like we were treated differently from the other people there, giving us different type of plates from the others (looked cheap) serving was bad, they just left the food on the table while they were serving the others, when I asked for a different 'papadam' the guy just took it with his hand and then put it back in my plate! And then bought a different one which was not even fully cooked! The food dint even taste good I had to eat it cause I paid for it and not because I liked it, it was bad that I couldn't even complete it! We were the only other Indians there along with another family all the others they were serving were whites. I felt discriminated for the first time in this place! The waiter was walking around us and kept staring at us even peaking into our phones while walking around and tried to act cool when we noticed him stare at our phone! While giving us the bill when my friend extended her hand to take it he dropped it on the table and continued to ignore it! That's very disrespectful! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! Bad food! Bad service!

Did not get a chance to have food coz there was a fckin useless guy who picked up the call and said something which was way less than expected. Need to work on having worthy people on board!

It was my first time to this restaurant with my friends. When we entered the restaurant we didn’t get a regular warm welcome but the manager was staring at us from a distance and it just creeped us to the core to be fair. He didn’t even come to our table once but he was talking to the rest of the non-asian customers and reaching out to them multiple times. And the dishes we ordered were not served properly and I say this because we saw the couple in front of us ordering the same dish and getting it in a bowl container and then served separately to a plate, while ours was already in the plate and the staff who served the food had his hands inside the plate!! On top of that when we were making the payment, the manager didn’t even look at our face. I extended my hands for the receipt and the manager just dropped the receipt in the tissue tray and walked off even when he saw that I extended my hands for it. I found it highly disrespectful. Although it doesn’t matter how much a customer pays, but should be treated fairly. But to mention we ordered £75 worth food for 3 of us and this was the treatment we received. It was such a humiliating experience. I would never recommend this place to anyone ever!

Overall good food but lacking authenticity. Portion size was too small for starter 3 pieces lamb Tikka for a plate and sides are very basic.
