After the Cinema trip to see Fishermen’s Friends we really fancied Fish and Chips. Generous portions (the large cod is massive) and chips with mushy peas hit the spot. Plenty of sauces and the essential malt vinegar. Tea or wine to wash it down. We were warmly welcomed, quick service and plenty of staff. Mother Kelly’s still offers great value.

We are a family of five, and sat down in the restaurant at tables with newspaper-effect tablecloths. As soon as we went in, we knew it was a good choice - there were plenty of people in, the meals looked sumptuous and the welcome was friendly.Three of us had fish and chips, a child’s meal, a plate of chips, bread and butter, two sides, and tea and other drinks - all for £44. The staff were absolutely great. Fish was creamy and fresh, and the chips fat and crunchy. Yum yum.Bread and butter pricey at 70p per slice, and parking a bit tight but, other than that, spot on.

Visited this evening after been there a few times in the past, but what a disaster, the chicken was not cooked and gravy was cold, so went back. I then had fish instead could see they weren't happy about my complaint as they were all looking over through the kitchen hatch, but I am a government inspector so I knew this was not exspectable and they looked up to a young waitress eating and licking her fingers, enough was enough so paid and left. This is a shame as I know its has new owners and corners are being cut and the quality is not there any, over priced and hygiene effected ie blonde young waitress licking her fingers, discussting.

We stopped off for some Fish and Chips as we usually do on Saturday afternoon. Everything is usually great. Today there seemed to be some bigwig manager hanging around and obviously making the team uncomfortable. It was very noticeable and the atmosphere seemed a little sour. I say keep the politics away from the customers it's not pleasant when you're trying to enjoy a meal and it's unprofessional. The team there always do a fantastic job leave them to do it!

We went for a takeaway there last week seeing as we were in the vicinity and having frequented Mother Kelly's on many an occasion. What a disaster! The young lad at the counter was bored stiff and kept checking his mobile all the time. The food was naff, the chips were horrendous and we felt we'd been ripped off with the naffness of it all. I'll be getting my chips from Micks Monster Burger outlet from now on, you can't beat them!!

Mother Kelly used to be a "rock solid" business in my opinion, with a consistent level of food quality and service. Value for money was the order of the day too. My last two visits to the takeaway part of the establishment make me think that it is at the start of a slippery slope. My order last night was taken by a sulking teenager who greeted me with a bored "yes mate" , who clearly was not remotely interested in being where he was and looked at his phone whilst waiting for something. No attempt at a smile was witnessed whilst I was there. The prices are no longer as attractive as they used to be and last night the chips definitely were not up to their usual standards. The place is not as busy as it used to be. I can't help but wonder why !?

I've eaten at Mother Kelly's many times and had a hankering to get out of the house on a very wet and windy day. Surprised to see a spruced up building but it was all a bit of a show.Greeted by a waitress who waved us to a table and then practically ran to take our order. I had sausage and large chips with curry sauce. My husband small cod and chips. We ordered two teas and bread and butter. This all used to come as a 'deal' but it was all now separate prices now.Food arrived quickly but my sausage was battered (cheerfully changed) and the chip portion was small. I asked if it was a large portion but the waitress told me that they don't do large portions anymore. Just one size fits all. Computer says no! The food tasted OK but the chips had black bits on them and quite a few were just bits of potato. The sausage wasn't hot and looked a strange pink colour. The waitresses weren't very friendly and we felt a bit in the way. What a shame. This restaurant was a bit of a secret place but I will not be going back. No atmosphere. The bill was just under £20 - expensive for what it was.

The first time I went here I was blown away, the best fish and chips I had ever had. The beer batter was to die for and the chips superb. However lately it seems to have lost its 'Wow' factor and now seems more of a run of the mill fish and chip shop but with a more expensive menu. The staff can come across as abrupt but they are just busy and trying to get everyone served ASAP which is understandable. I have always had a pleasant experience with the staff there. I hope next time we go back it will be back to it's best as we are not going to give up on them yet. Curry sauce is definitely worth trying and they serve a good selection of drinks in the takeaway part.

Went to lunch yesterday at Mother's Kelly but was very disappointed with the bad experience. The waitress that served us was abrupt to us and other customers. The fish and chips served amazingly quick, less than 1 minute which we thought it was good. Sadly the food was rather stale. As far as I remember, Sunday lunch time, Mother Kelly's was always full and difficult to get seat but yesterday was half empty. We later learned that it has changed ownership and now we understand why the service standard dropped tremendously and the food quality was not to its usual high standard. As a Regular customer at Mother Kelly's, after yesterday experience we will seek other venue that is worth our time and money.

Four of us Decided last minute to have a takeaway from mother Kelly’s on Saturday night, we had 2 jumbo sausages 2 fish cakes 1 cod 3lots of chips and a citrus sauce, the food was so cold, the fish had hardly any batter on it the fish cakes weren’t very nice either and the chipswere all bits and if they weren’t bits they were green and the portion size was rubbish hardly any chips at all! They were very busy but I still expect good food especially for the price they charge.... which I was shocked about and questioned as it’s gone up in price by a bit. Very disappointed as it’s the only place I would ever get my fish and chips from!

We have visited Mother Kelly many times over the last few years, never had a bad meal that is until tonight. Can only imagine this place is under new management as in my opinion had deteriated recently. Gammon steak was very tough and chips not hot enough. Overheard next table complaining to staff that fish had too much batter, was told by waitress to order lightly battered fish next time. Not what I have come to expect at Mother Kelly's. When we paid, a complaint was made as it was at the start of the meal, the manager reluctantly removed charge for that meal.cant see us using this place again in the near future, very dissapointed in the meal .

Being going here off and on since it opened and has always been excellent, without exception. The last couple of visits were just, well everyday. Nothing memorable or set it apart like it always would with good quality fish (almost milky), batter so light and delicate to fish dry at the tail end and the batter noticeably thicker, all in all not the wow factor. Never known it like this in over 25 years. Different management?, altered the process / oil. Whatever, not on the pedestal it once was, it's become everyday and no longer the destination where quality was never a question and was a given. Shame.

Having finished a trip to The Armouries on Portsdown Hill which was very good, a quick detour on the way back to Newbury having remembered trying this place before. Mother Kelly's Fish & Chips are fantastic, Fresh Fish, Crispy Batter, Excellent Chips you could tell they change their oil regularly, and know how to cook one of the UK's staples properly.A five minute drive away to the east is the entrance to HMS Excellent, the Naval training centre and a great place to look over at Porchester Castle, watch the boats and if you have the right kit, listen to the naval radio traffic going about its business, and much into awesome Fish & Chips. This is the 2nd time we have had a take away here, luckily I remembered the last time and was pleased I did, yumm yumm yumm.If you are near the A27 around 6 miles West of Portsmouth, it's on the left hand side, worth a detour for some tasty original food. I dont know how this place keeps open for business. They charge a fortune for very standard fish and chips that you can buy in any fish&chip shop in Britain. The inside is basic and cheap looking and the staff certainly dont make you feel welcome - they scrutiise a tenner as if your a fraudster following which out comes the hand for a tip!Save your pocket and your taste buds, take a trip into Port Solent or the Portchester fish&chip shop just up the road. I have been a long standing visitor of Mother Kelly's since 1988 and my previous review was glowing about them. However I recently visited with my family and I was sadly disappointed. Apart from the friendly lady who seated us, the rest were just miserable. If you don't like working on a Sunday get another job. The quality of the food was as good as ever the portions of chips seem to have shrunk. The kids meals had about 10 chips each. The adult meals were served on the same size plate with a few more chips. They are not cheap either just under £25.00 for 2 adults & 2 kids. This didn't bother me before but now with the shrinking portions the expense cannot be justified. I also use the takeaway attached, their portions are so much better and cheaper, so take your own plates knives and forks, salt, vinegar & ketchup, take drinks all round get a takeaway and enjoy in the comfort of your car or drive the short distance to Portchester Castle car park where there are a couple of picnic benches.Come on Mother Kelly's sort your act out, you are best around for taste you just leave me still hungry, the portion sizes may suit the coach loads of oaps but not average people, sort it out with a smile on your faces too!

For what is in reality, a cafe, the prices are a little high. The quality and service remain consistent, evidenced by how busy it always is. On this occasion, the chips were hot, fresh and there were no small crunchy, dry pieces which often make up the portion, just a decent sized portion of proper chips. We had fish and a pie and both were hot, served quite quickly, but gave the impression of having just been cooked.I would visit again, but would need a reason to, as there are decent, better value premises closer to home.Friendly staff.Clean (including toilets).

Scampi looked like chicken nuggets and over cooked shell. The fish was oily. This place clearly trades on name alone and not quality of food. the chips were less than a standard small size. Perhaps some one should advise them you can buy a sack for £8 now as potatoes are ready available. Cuppa is an old type of cup. Kellys (WAKE UP) times have changed cafes are now serving mug size for the same price. On hole very bad experience on food, stick to you local shop. I have been travelling down to Portsmouth most years since 1986 and have been visiting Mother Kelly's during most visits since 1990. Sometimes it was when I was on a business trip and others times when I was travelling with my family. It wasn't just me who recognised this eatery as good, but several colleagues also commented on the quality of their fish and chips. This WAS a must visit eatery when we were in Portsmouth. We missed our visits to the restaurant last year due to business and the one occasion we did manage to get there the car park was full. This year we were lucky, we managed to get a parking space and easily a table in the restaurant. The place was half empty, which was strange for a Saturday night at 6.30pm. The four of us ordered or normal meals 2 x standard cod and chips, one large of the same and scampi and chips. Imagine our shock when 2 "children's" plated portions arrived (these plates were more light side plates) and the large was more like their "old portion" standard. We had to confirm that this was our order. As for the scampi, the filling were pea-sized. As for the prices of these portions; they were same as my regular fish and chip restaurant in London whose food is now so much superior.Whether the owners have changed or there has been a steep increase in their council charges, but those portions were disgusting for the price. As for the fish quality itself, they still remove the skin before frying, the fish was white (what there was of it).Sadly we will not return.

My wife and I had a take away from here on a saturday lunch time.I count myself as a fish and chip connoisseur and felt I had to try this establishment, because of some of the reviews, even though its a long way out of Portsmouth. My wife had a large cod and I had Rock (Huss) - my wife's cod was massive and my Rock was also a good size. The chips were excellent and enough of them. Ok so that's the positives, on the negative side, the batter just didn't do it, I could smell curry sauce which I don't expect in a traditional fish and chip shop, it took nearly 20 minutes to prepare, I appreciate freshly cooked food takes time, but I was told at the outset it would take 6 minutes. Finally the server wasn't exactly friendly. Having said all that I would go back with little persuasion.

We have been here numerous times and usually it is exceptional however, on this occasion it was poor. We ordered 2 haddock and chips and were told we would have to wait for them to be cooked which was fine as that's usually the case. When they arrived my husband's fish looked good as usual but mine had very thick batter and was really overcooked. It seemed as if it may have been cooked earlier and then dipped again in batter and refried. It was mid afternoon and usually we eat earlier so maybe this was the problem. Also the service wasn't as good as usual, the bread and butter were forgotten and we had to ask for the tea. We would definitely give them the benefit of the doubt and would go again however NOT mid afternoon.

Can remember years ago when it was called Berts cafe and there was an old german submarine aground in the harbour behind the premises. Eneough of that its now that counts and as I said before best fish and chips in the south. They do a sit down meal and takeaway but its all GOOD.

The 15 minute drive outside Portsmouth is well worth, Mother Kelly's is every thing you could want from a Fish & Chip restaurant. Fresh fish in really tasty batter and chips with that real home fried flavour. All the usual extras such as mushy peas! Friendly staff, clean & tidy. Well recommended.

Have been eating Large cod and Chips here for probably 20 years, the fish is skinned and is cooked fresh and it's usually brilliant and consistent , we had lunch today and there was an explanation about where the fish was sourced ( Norway) and that they have been using the same supplier for 30 years, I don't believe the supplier ( wholesaler?)is supplying the same fish however because today the fish was tasteless and the texture was different, the flakes were not as big and dare I say , I think it was previously frozen. Can you you get fresh Fish ie not frozen from Norway? This would have been a five star review on virtually all of my previous visits, not this time. We'll give it another Try to see if it's a one off, but I'm worried.

yum yum and more yum!! wonderful fish and chips that can be eaten watching the waves of the solent. Reasonably priced - aren't all chip shops expensive now? but the fish is fresh and tasty and the chips excellent.

I have been eating here regularly for a couple of years now.Being a yorkshire man I always believed that fish and chips could only be done properly in yorkshire. This place proves me wrong .Really excellent , worth trying the special deal at weekend.Service can occasionally be eccentric.

My family and I tried Mother Kelly's on a whim (we'd passed it numerous times on the way to and from hospital) and we have been back numerous times since! The staff is always friendly and accommodating - even with my sometimes very boisterous 19-month-old son - and nothing ever seems too much trouble for them. The food has always been delicious, well-cooked and fresh, whether I have my 'usual' (scampi) or just a plain ol' cod and chips (which is what I had tonight, in fact). I wouldn't say it's the cheapest chippie in the area, but in my opinion it certainly trumps all the others I've tried. It's a pleasure visiting, and is a lovely treat for us!

Went for the Sunday lunchtime special (2x fish meals for £10). Great food best fish and chips straight from the frier, was so hot that we wait til weghould eat them. Service was spot on and meal for 4 came out as £30 after adding two beers and two teas and two mushy peas. Be back soon!

Decided to eat in after a stressful day. Ordered Cod and Chips x3 with 2 side orders and 3 hot drinks. Arrived on a tiny plate, no garnish just a wedge of lemon and tartare sauce in a 'Squeeze Me' sachet. No one checked to see if all was ok and at least 4 staff sat at one of the tables talking. Everything seemed a little bit of an effort to the staff and for 27 pounds, I expected more.

Decided to drive 25 minutes to mother Kelly's because the food there has been pretty good everytime we've been. They didn't have anything a usual fish and chip shop has like fish or a savaloy ended up paying to much for an old battered sausage that must have been there for atleast 45 minutes. The chips were soggy and cold which just made driving that far seem worth it.... Save your money for deep blue

Ate here with family. Quality of good was ok, but found staff disinterested & inflexible. It was a warm day, I wanted a cold drink instead of tea in 'meal deal'. They wouldn't allow change, even though cold drink was half the price of a cup of tea. You couldn't have imagined 2 more glum staff.

If you like good freshly cooked and quality fish and chips you will be very hard pressed to find anywhere better than Mother Kelly's where everything is cooked fresh mainly due to the level of demand they create from both their restaurant and take away section next door.Portions are generous with "Pensioners specials" at lunchtime that will more than satisfy most people irrespective of age. The "Large" choice is very impressive whilst still remaining a quality piece of fish.Quality of fish is consistantly high and batter always crisp and never greasey and chip just as they should be.Simple restaurant layout but always spotlessly clean and very popular with the local OAP set at lunchtimes. Cheerful and helpful staff manage everyone well with brisk service.Parking for plenty of cars so no hassle with having to park and walk (just as well for many of the lunchtime crowd!) Prices about average for a decent fish and chip restaurant but cheap when the quality of the food is factored in.

Nice fish and chips. Take away or eat in, plenty of car parking. My chips were a bit on the cold side and the room was also chilly otherwise I would have give it Five.

You can tell the fish is fresh - it's so succulent and actually tastes of something. The batter is crisp and the chips just how I like them - big and fluffy with a crisp outside. My husband would prefer thinner chips but he is from Lancashire so what can I say! Service is friendly, surroundings reminiscent of an old American diner but clean and functional. Free parking available which is a bonus. Good for an impromptu meal out any time of the day or evening.

This is not a luxury destination, nor is it a slap up dinner. It is a cafe, that simply serves hot good quality Fish & Chips. You'll pay approx £7 for Cod and Chips. They have childrens portions but only available to under 12's. Pensioners lunch time specials too. Plenty of parking although to be sure of a place you need to get there early. They do offer other types of fish, chicken and pies too. I have noticed recently that the portions have got smaller and the price has gone up - but its a consistent favourite regardless. You always know what you are getting.

Not much else to add except Mother Kelly's has a very traditional feel to the restaurant, and is also reflected in the service. We had to wait a couple of mins for a parking space, but this shows how popular the place (plaice! sorry) is. Clean, cosy, friendly and delicious....see you again soon!

Supposed to be the best fish and chips in the Portsmouth area if you believe their cinema advert. Greas-laden, soggy and luke warm. We've eaten far better elswhere and none to beat Stacey's in Gosport. Rank, rankl, rank. Would definitely advise not visiting again.

Quickly followed with toddler fork and spoon so daughter was very pleased. We had the 2 for a tenner, fish meals (haddock and cod) lovely fresh, great chips, fast! Daughters meal was free. Bathrooms clean and toddler toilet seats for those who need them. Didn't look for baby changing .

a good fish and chip restaurant , the meal was well cooked and the fish was excellent , we found the staff to be most welcoming and warm , and they could not do enough , a good selection of puddings , overall a good little chip shop restaurant , not for a romantic meal but what it lacked in ambience it more than gained for a great meal.
