Morgan's Traditional Chippy in Carmarthenshire

We just called in to have a sit in meal. My husband had haddock chips and peas, wow the size of the meal was huge , I had scampi and chips fabulous. Needless to say we will be back, the staff were very welcoming and the price was reasonable. It was a shame we couldn’t eat it all , too big for us to handle, but good food.

Fresh and delicious. Piping hot- and well wrapped. Friendly staff. My family voted these the best fish & chips we’ve ever tasted.Highly recommended-you won’t get better.

Looking for a good fish n chips place whilst on holiday. Can definitely recommend this place, chips were easily the best I've had in a long time and really good portion. Fish was huge and not too greasy. All glad we chose the standard portion as we're totally stuffed!!

Haven't been to Carmarthen in a while, so had not visited Morgans in 2 years but pleased to say the quality of this fish and chip restaurant has not diminished. The fish is always full of flavour, not over the battered or too oily. The chips are proper potato ones and perfectly cooked. I have been coming here, on and off, for years and I can see why it remains so popular with locals. The fish and chips are simply very very good

Absolutely fell in love with this place but for a little while it went really downhill. I stopped going for over a year BUT decided to try again and so glad I did. It’s back to it’s glory days and sooooooooooooooo happy to have the best back

Searched this place out because it was recommended. Wish I hadn't bothered. Arrived close to closing time. Husband loves Fish and Chips, I don't. But I will usually find something on the menu I can eat as a veggie. Apart from a Pavement Pizza style veggie burger which I really didn't fancy I could have had chips, chip butty, or chips! Really??? I appreciate you specialise in fish dishes, but sometimes a group or a party has a veggie or vegan who would also like a nice meal. Offering chips or a chip butty is rude. Our local has battered halloumi, sweet potato fries, pea fritters or sage and onion patties. It's not difficult. Would have been OK if husband's meal was exceptional. It wasn't. So he had an average supper and I went hungry. Not a great result.

Based on past reviews we had a take out here ,should have read the recent reviews. Chips were warm and chewey . Mushy peas was cold and runny. COD was acceptable and curry sauce! well .....

If you say you're open until 7.30 pm ...... ...... don't tell us you're closed when we've walked across town to eat with you and arrive at 6.50 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Wouldn’t return. We came 30 minutes before the shop closed and they only had 4 things left to offer that looked like they were left out for hours, the chips were room temperate warm and slightly chewy as if they’d been left for ages until they closed. Over priced for the taste. Rude service also

Had to give the place a chance given the previous reputation but it has gone seriously down hill. There is no way the chip oil is ever changed. Picked up a takeaway, by the time I got it into the car I knew it was bad as I was overwhelmed by the smell of oil! Seriously don't bother trying it out, you'll regret it. I don't understand why anyone would take over a successful business and run it to the ground like this, it makes no sense

We had a takeaway which was the first time we have used Morgans since the Coronavirus lockdown. Morgans seems to have gone down in many people's opinion, possibly due to an unfair cleanliness rating together with maybe also a case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. This has always been my chippy of choice, and we were not disappointed. The freshly fried large cod (huge) and haddock & chips were delicious. If you have stopped using Morgans and taken your trade around the corner, think twice next time and give them another go. The only negative was that I had to leg it to a cashpoint because they didn't accept cards. 10/10

Three of us went in hope that it had improved since last visit, after a change of ownership. The thin end of our fish was fine, but by the time we had eaten to the thicker end it became rather dry and tasteless and the end of one portion was inedible - it looked like it might had been cooked partly frozen and was discoloured. I suspect they buy 'value' fish. Chips were acceptable.

Revolting greasy heap of mush. This used to be the best chippy in the locality. The queue used to be out the door on saturday nights so I was a little surprised when I went tonight and I was the only one in there. Not surprised anymore though. Pity.

Have been eating here regularly for 20 yrs+ and never had a bad word to say about the place until new owners took over. I have given the place a few chances in case the food was a result of a settling in period but the food is now awful. Fish portions are smaller and dry, and the chips are inedible. The new owner doesn't know how to either buy or cook fish and apparently doesn't even know how to cook chips. He may have increased his profit margin with cheaper suppliers, but it won't last long, the food is vile. An object lesson in how to destroy a formerly cherished local business.

Been travelling to Morgan’s chippy for 30 years from Neath as a treat. Very disappointed today, fish was swimming in grease, chips were inedible too. Didn’t know it had changed hands, needless to say won’t be returning. Such a SHAME a good business ruined!!!

Went for lunch yesterday. Cod, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a mug of milky coffee. Excellent service, nicest fish and chips we've ever had. Highly recommended!

Literally the worst chippy ever since the new owners took over. I used to eat here 3-4 times a week..not anymore. The owner is not very nice at all and does not stick to his opening hours. Even the staff that have been there for years look like they have had enough of him.

Not sure why this place has bad reviews because I found the fish and chips to be out of this world. Best chips of my trip, without doubt! Short wait, everything cooked to order and the staff were good fun. Well done to Morgan’s for not letting me down on my home trip!

I have eaten at Morgan's for the past 25 years & have never had a bad meal. In fact there is hardly anywhere else I would reccomend for Fish & Chips. However, last Friday I shared a portion of Fish & Chips with my daughter & we were very disappointed. The fish was not freshly cooked, the batter & the fish were dry as if they had been sitting in warmer for a couple of hours The chips also were not freshly cooked I'm not sure if its because they were not busy or because they couldn't be bothered?But there were 3 female staff available & our food was nowhere near the standard it always has been!Very dissatisfied customer

I've been coming here for donkeys years. A visit to Carmarthen just would not be complete without a visit to Morgans Chippy.I dont know what they do to their chips, but they are always delicately crisp with a distinct crunch, and soft and fluffy inside. I'm not exaggerating when I say its chip heaven. The fish is always cooked to order so it involves a wait of the cooking time but it's well worth it. The result is mouth watering. No one does it this well, locally or as far as I'm concerned, anywhere else. The fact that the restaurant is so busy every weekday and full of locals says it all... Its no secret how good this place is. I would have thought the negative reviews on here are false and possibly vindictive. I've been coming here for 30 plus years and I have never been able to fault the place.

used to make special journey from swansea just for fish and chips from morgans.now under new owners ,the batter is too thick, the fish has been reduced in size but more importantly in taste,,maybe new supplier of fish.the chips are terrible.. didn't previous owners recommend same suppliers of oils, fish,potatoes etcend of an era I'm sorry to say..

Haven’t been since the take over but very pleased to see that it hasn’t lowered its standards. Went with husband for fish and chip supper which was just what we needed on a cold wet night. Everything was fresh and crispy. Staff are really friendly and helpful. portion size were large. Will be going again soon

After reading some of the recent reviews, I was worried that Morgans' had gone downhill. Went in tonight, delighted to find that nothing's changed; not even the staff although there are a couple of new faces, people do change jobs after all. Plenty of friendly banter with the girls, fish cooked to order and well worth the brief wait.

I have been going to morgans for sixteen years,in that time the fish and chips where excellent.Today I went again for my usual treat only to find it is now in new ownership. Sadly I will not be returning again. Reason being the restaurant was cold and uninviting "lacking atmosphere, longer than average wait for the food ordered" (small plates as usual) just okay nothing special for the price paid. I wish the previous owners good luck for the future and would like to thank them for the past experience of the most enjoyable meals over the years. I hope new owners take this review seriously.

The fish was gorgeous so thank you for that. However the chips are awful I will not return. They were old tasting and so sharp in the mouth bit n bobs really.

I travel the U K in my job and I usually find fish and chip shops to be a reliable source of good food. Until now I have rated the Cannon Fish Bar in Berwick Upon Tweed as my sole favourite - it is now joint favourite with the amazing Morgans Traditional Chippy. I have generally found such outlets in Wales to be pretty average and stumbling across Morgans was a revelation which has helped me to see Welsh chippies in more positive light. The people of Carmarthen are truly blessed to enjoy the privilege of such an eatery in their town. Spotlessly clean, friendly and competent staff serving excellent food with a smile all under the supervision of the fantastic Simon Jackson - a Welshman who, like myself a product of Ystalyfera Grammar School has lost his accent - that happens when you stay too long in England. I am looking forward to going back for a second round.

As regular visitors we returned on Saturday. We didn't realize it was under new ownership and were surprised that at 12.30 pm on a Saturday is was very quiet.

Just had a fish and chip meal and it was lovely.....cooked to perfection and great service....the new owners have for some strange reason been having unfavourable reviews but it all honest I can't fault them....great food and service....good luck to their new venture...

Enjoyed a lovely fish and chip lunch today with relatives. Fish was very good and the chips were the best I have tasted for a good while. Certainly worth another visit soon.

Been coming here for as long as I can remember, and always looked forward to an amazing meal, well how things have changed, new owner doesn’t even acknowledge anyone , but main thing is the standard of the food has gone downhill , chips do not taste the same and where have the fabulous homemade fish cakes gone ,now it’s just standard frozen ones that taste of instant potato and nothing else, staff look miserable ,looks like most have left, not surprised, took ages to get meal,couldn’t even serve a hot chocolate as steamer had broken ,ever heard of a microwave ? needless to say we won’t be coming back anytime soon .

I’ve been going here for years and it was the best chip shop for miles around. The atmosphere ha changed. It used to be a happy place to go and Mal the owner always had a smile on his face, New owner barely looks at the customers with no personality whatsoever. Went there tonight, no Steak and Kidney Pies, no minced beef and onion pies, only chicken and mushroom. Tried for a rissoles. Guess what, no rissole. Hardly any food in the hot counter, the fish that was there was really skinny compared to the usual cod we used to get there. Most of Mal’s Staff have left and those that are left look as miserable as sin. What a shame.

Ey up called in for fish and chips - 40 minute wait - they were very busy and were working quick and organised -fish and chips - one scoop of chips enough for 2 people - fish better than chips but not a patch on Fish and chips served up at Hampden Fish shop.

Tried this restaurant on advice of previous reviews on TripAdvisor not disappointed ordered large cod chips curry sauce and normal cod chips and mushy peas excellent portions served freshly cooked and hot. Very good quality and taste no complaints. Order taken and served by a very friendly small lady with red hair, even brought scissors to assist with sauce sashes. Toilets very clean and accessible. Would definitely recommend if this is what you fancy.

Disappointing Fish and Chips, the thickness of the fish portion appears to have reduced and taste not as it has been. Still ok but no where near usual standard. Hope this is a learning blip by new owners.

Recently stayed in Carmarthen and had another very pleasant meal at Morgans. I had the farmers feast (bacon/egg/chips etc), and my wife had the fish and chips, Both meals were excellent, and I've had excellent meals there before such as their home made faggots and gravy.

Absolutely brilliant. Must visit if you want great fish and chips and friendly service. We'll be back again for certain.

We were staying a few miles north of Carmarthen in a cottage and we took home a Cod & Chips & Mushy Peas supper three times in one week from Morgans, they were that good. We come from a seaside town in Yorkshire so we know about good Fish & Chips and I would rate Morgans as some of the best we have ever had. You will not be disappointed.

Just came across this lovely chippy down a side street. We had a set meal called Merlin's treat. The fish was so white with such a light batter, and proper chips, with bread and butter and a big pot of tea. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants proper fish and chips.

We go here most times we are in Carmarthen. Food is almost always very hot and fresh. The fish is tasty with crispy batter. The chips are superb (not greasy as some comments I've read on here ) and the mushy peas are the best !!!

Found this chippie by chance and my goodness so glad we did. The service is exceptional and the food - WOW, you had better be hungry if you go for the larger portions, they are huge. The chips are crispy and fluffy and the cod is white and so tasty, the batter crunchy and delicious, and the best bit the prices, they are so reasonable. Highly recommend a visit to this chippie, will most certainly be going back.

Visited this establishment last summer,had cod,chips to take away , it was delicious,cod was very large,chips were fab,and curry sauce was very tasty. Went here again last week but this time sat in the cafe to eat,had the cod,chips meal which once again was fabulous,came with peas/ a pot of tea or coffee,plus bread/butter,everything was faultless. One member of the family had faggots,peas and chips which she said were lovely .Staff were very nice and helpful,will be paying another visit very soon.

Honestly the best fish and chips I've ever had! They do a meal deal called Merlin's Treat which also includes bread and butter, mushy peas, and a pot of tea - YUM! The inside is like a cheap cafe and the staff aren't particularly friendly or attentive, which might put some people off - but honestly the food is worth it!

Was recommended this place by friends. Great recommendation it turned out. Probably the best fish and chips I've had anywhere. Have been there twice now. Their battered cod is very nicely done and great chips too. The breaded plaice is good too. Had take-way once as well, and again very , very good.

An occasional lazy call to have a JAWS supper from the best Chippy in Carmarthen by a long stretch. Chips are crispy hot, curry sauce is the real thick stuff and not the Irish sauce that chippies now tend to sell to make more money! The fish fills the carton box and all served with a smile. We upon arriving back to west Wales tried all the towns chip shops until we found this one. It is the best in town and great after a long hard day to go and eat the supper by the river. For the handicapped or impaired customers, remember this is Carmarthen where people will always help you but traders of all sorts do not get themselves bankrupt by installing everything that some legislation demands. We are still living in the real world here!

Ate in the restaurant as a family group and had an excellent meal. Despite it being a Saturday evening and the takeaway queue stretching out of the door, the restaurant had plenty of tables and our order was taken quickly and food arrived promptly. All freshly cooked and delicious.

Never disapointed .We always come here when in town for the merlins treat and always get really crispy batter and great chips .

The best chip pie in the country as far as I’m concerned, the cod was pure white and flakey as it should be, tasted of the sea! Freshly cooked delicious real potato chips, hot and crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy inside! Perfect! Fully recommended!

We have been to Carmarthen before and had take away form here, this time we sat in. Basic restaurant but not the foot and service. Fish and Chips were really really tasty and great portion. Suggest large one is good to share and other locals were doing this, mushy peas were excellent. Daughter had lasagne and this was nice. Staff are great and pleasant. Toilets are outside but clean. A must visit to eat in or take away.

It was Mark the local I heard saying in the Indian restaurant the night before, that the best fish and chips in Carmarthen were to be found at Morgans.

If I lived closer to here I would probably be a regular visitor but as it is will have to wait until we next return to Carmarthen. Food was tasty, not greasy and served piping hot. Lunchtime was really busy with all tables taken and a queue for the takeaway.

The food at the place is amazing. Always is everytime. However, the staff are useless. The amount of times I go in and have to wait 5 minutes before anyone takes my order, despite there being 5 (sometimes 7) staff behind the counter standing there waiting for items of food.

Have been visiting Morgans since I was a kid, food always good. Husband had fish & chips, I had the faggots, gravy & chips all very tasty, can’t fault it.

Probably the opposite of the healthy eating options just down the street. However sometimes only chips will do. A reasonably priced chippy with fish cooked fresh to order. Light batter, well cooked chips despite being busy. Reasonable prices.

Visited Morgan's chip shop on more than a dozen times it has never let its standards drop below Exelent. Read all the comments and agree with them all. Keep up your brilliant work many thanks for a chippy well worth the aculade of top one.

Had Cod Chips and Mushy peas at Morgans, the fish and chips were superb, but the mushy peas was the star of the show. Don,t know what the magic recipe is, but I would love to get hold of it. Then again, they probably would not taste quite as good at home. The ambience of the traditional "Chippy" adds so much to the experience. Lush!

It's tucked away down a side street off the main square and the place itself is not particularly smart from the outside, but the food makes it well worth visiting.

My father and I visited here after a mornings shopping in Carmarthen, we both had the Merlins Treat, and what a treat! The chips were cooked to perfection, crisp on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, the fresh tasting Cod was encased in a batter which, in my opinion, was just perfect, tasty, light and not stodgy at all. The mushy peas were sweetened slightly, a nice touch, but just perfect. A generous pot of tea each, with two rounds of local bread and butter each! Absolutely, a lunch to fill the most demanding of appetites!! The service by the very pleasant and courteous member of staff was excellent. I highly recommend a visit here.

I have reviewed this place before but a trip to Carmarthen would not do without our fish n chips at thus restaurant. Honestly, you cannot fault it, the best chips anywhere and huge portions too. Staff are lovely so please try it out, you won't be disappointed. They also do smaller portions for children and older people.

Very busy around 6pm on a Friday - queueing out the door - which I think impacted on the quality. Fish batter was under-cooked and stodgy. Chips were good and tasty. Generous portions (the 'large' chips is enormous!)

Morgans is a well established enterprise in Carmarthen and clearly it has a regular clientele. It has plenty of seating and generally it is a friendly environment especially the waitresses but behind the fryers staff seem ed less so on my visit.The range is average chippy fayre but a lack of haddock on the menu was disappointing for me. The chips were plentiful however for my taste other venues in town perhaps use different cooking oil which I find preferable.Prices are in line with other outlets in Carmarthen but parking is impossible outside Morgans without stopping on double yellows. From the high street though it is just a short walk from the parking bays or car park but you do have to pass at least one other chippy if you are adamant on a Morgan's meal.I would rate this outlet as adequate or average but I may have been more generous if haddock had been a fish they stocked. The mushy peas were good though.
