Would 100% recommend. We had Edamame beans - delicious Salt and pepper squid - massive pieces of battered squid Chilli king prawns - absolutely amazing, so so tasty King prawn skewer - that was good too Bento boxes - chicken, beef and salmon ones were all fab - sauce was amazing. Rice was sticky and lovely Sushi boat - would recommend to anyone who likes sushi Visited for my daughters 14th birthday, service was fab, waitresses all friendly. Nice little novelty of the robot singing happy birthday whilst delivering the food too! Thanks for a brilliant experience

We went to Moonsha on the 22nd for our daughter's birthday meal. As it was a Tuesday evening it wasn't busy. The menu is easy to follow and pictures help with the descriptions, the staff were friendly and efficient. Prices of starters (and some mains) were higher than other places but they were very good. Plenty of choice for mains and again, food was good. All food is brought out by an odd robot, a bit of a gimmick but certainly made us smile. My only criticisms were that there wasn't much choice for wines and maybe a bit more interaction and help with choosing food if (like us) you don't have any experience of Japanese food.

Simply the worst Before I start I must emphasise this is NOT a Japanese restaurant Walked with my son to eat dinner The guy was very welcoming and showed us to our table The decoration would drive any self respecting Japanese person to commit harakiri Massive posters of Mount Fuji with pink blossom and smattering of cheap figures of tradition Japanese dancers And that’s where the good news ends The outrageous prices for starters We ordered Starters Salt and pepper squid 4-5 pieces of tiny bit of smelly squid concealed with tasteless limp batter covered in raw onion and carrot slices Chicken tori karaage Well that was gross fake chicken that made McDonalds chicken nuggets taste like gourmet . King prawns 4 king prawns in a bath of treacle with raw onion and carrots slices Mains Beef bento box and soup The soup tasted like it had passed through the chef not by him The beef was the cheap bland stuff they get from the cash and carry precooked and microwaved or swirled in a wok for effect a horror show in a Bath of gravy, treacle and onion, carrots slices and a partridge and pear tree Chicken bento box Same as above with the same onion and carrot slices in the Bath of gravy and honey The least blonde thing was the boiled rice lump All this was served on a robot that blurted out sickly pop songs from the charts back in 2013 The place had a dirty sticky feel about it like one of them dingy 90s nightclubs I didn’t eat my main and the waiter Saw that and must have given me more respect for not eating expensive garbage . This is the worst Chinese food I have ever tasted avoid the disappointment find a wagga mama it would be cheaper and possibly better

Ordered 'Absolute Moonsha' dish and along with 2 drinks; English Breakfast Tea & Mojito. The food was absolutely amazing, really tasty. Staff members were friendly and welcoming. Had no problem s with ordering. However, issue was when getting the bill, all of the staff members were on thier lunch and we had to wait around 20 minutes until someone came. Also it is a bit cold in the restaurant, so I advise if you to dress warmly before going there. Toilets could've been improved by being cleaner, floors were dirty. Rather than that, everything was alright. If you are fan of Sushi, this place is for you.

We were recommended this by two couples, so had high expectations. For nearly £40 a head for food, I don’t expect to leave the place hungry, but we all did. The portions were very small, very little meat served with rice and beansprouts. Very little cost of actual food. That was really poor value for money. The food we did actually receive was ok, but certainly nothing special. I expected better than 'just ok'. But the worst thing was the service, and that’s why I’m writing this review. It was non-existent. We had one drink before the meal, then tried to order another before the meal was ready. It was impossible to get another drink for nearly an hour. I was walking around the restaurant trying to find someone to take an order. I asked the cook if he could catch someone. I went to the bar to get them myself and they wouldn’t serve from the bar. In the end we had all finished eating and were about to leave when the drinks arrived, so we sent them back. Too blooming late! This food is very salty and lots of soy sauce as you would expect, so you need a drink with it. I spent the whole of the meal dehydrating and trying to find someone to take an order. Not at all enjoyable. I did complain when I was there but they weren’t in the least bit interested. I appreciate that everywhere has staffing problems at the minute, but if that is the case they should take less bookings. Moonsha phoned me on the afternoon to confirm that we were still coming. At that point they would have known they were short-staffed and could have set expectations. I’ve been to teppanyaki before and they were great fun. Lots of entertaining flipping and flicking food with clever knifework. There was none of that here. The cook flicked some egg at each of us to catch in our mouths before he started cooking, but that was it. Absolutely no other show at all. He may as well been stood cooking burgers on a bbq. Very boring. This was a special occasion so we wanted to go somewhere special that we hadn’t been to before. We should have gone elsewhere, or could have had the mother of all takeaways instead. We definitely won’t be going back here again and I would like to set (low) expectations for anybody else. At least until they sort staffing out or take fewer bookings. And serve reasonable portions. And put on a bit of show! That was the worst restaurant experience I can remember having, and very expensive for the privilege.

When we arrived we was met by a lovely host who was so warm and welcoming. The service was personable and the food was absolutely beautiful and cooked to perfection! The cook was Bhavesh and he was 10/10! His food was not only incredible but his banter was on point too, it was a really enjoyable evening! We met a lovely family who were regulars and gave us all the top tips on what to order (Thank you so much). Overall I am sat here with the biggest smile and the fullest belly! We've eaten at Moonsha a few times over the years and always enjoyed it. Decent Japanese food with a bit of atmosphere. It has been a long while since our last visit and it is post lockdown. It was quiet this evening and service was slow, but the staff were very polite, smiley and friendly. My tempura bento box arrived first and I didnt want it to go cold or soft so after a few mins started to eat alone. Then my husband's bento box arrived. We had almost finished when my daughter's ramen arrived. And then 5 minutes later, the last 2 dishes arrived. It is nice to eat together and as the restaurant was very quiet, not sure why this happened. Bento boxes were okay, iceberg lettuce addition odd, not as good as I remember but the tempura was good. The ramen dishes were disappointing. The noodles were obviously precooked vac pac style and the broth very sachet synthetic tasting. Im hoping they will get back to slightly more authentic flavours and from scratch cooking.

No test and trace details were taken, and we were sat next to another family even though the restaurant wasn’t very busy. We both ordered a set menu, but half of the food never came out. Were we supposed to share the one bowl of miso soup? No sashimi as advertised on the menu either. Birthday party - 30 people. Because we had such a large booking, the restaurant asked us to order from the Teppanyaki menu, and choose our food a few days ahead of our visit. Totally reasonable. But unfortunately, MANY things went wrong on the night:1. The first and last people received their food 1 hour 25 minutes apart! They didn't offer any snacks, starters or drinks while we waited.2. The 'teppanyaki' was NOT teppanyaki. I paid £20 for a stir fry and fried rice. We sat round a normal table, rather than the teppanyaki set-up.3. The food was not Japanese. It was Chinese. 4. The prawns were dubiously undercooked. After, we'd booked to do karaoke upstairs. Two more problems:1. The room was unheated - it's January. It was FREEZING.2. The karaoke machine wasn't working. We hung around for over an hour before giving up. They didn't apologise or make any suggestions to solve the problem. What a pity this party's careful planning was ruined by such incompetence and lack of care! The restaurant wasn't busy at all, so I can't see a reason for these problems.

I attended this restaurant on the 07/12/2019 with a group of 20 to celebrate a friend's 30th Birthday. The table was booked for 7pm. The order was taken at 8pm (with encouragement), the starters were served at 9pm, and then 'some' of the mains were severed between 10pm and 10:30pm. This customer waiting time was beyond ridiculous. I have noted a previou review that states "If you choose to go to this restaurant, don’t choose the table service, choose the stools with dedicated chefs. The people at these stations seem to get better service and have a better time.". I can support that review because throughout the ordeal my and friends and I watched in awe of the other customers while their personal chefs delivered a well rehearsed routine that was less about cooking and more about flipping an egg onto your head. Pathetic. It's a restaurant. Get the basics right first like serving customers, then worry about the egg flipping. Anyway, once we had observed the finale of the novelty act for the 5th time we twigged that many of the "stool" customers has arrived, eaten, paid, and gone leaving the poor relation "table service" customers wondering where there food was. The friends that I went with are a resilient bunch and have the patience of saints; keeping ourselves entertained with a good old game of 'Heads Up!' that rivaled the acrobatic eggs over at the "stations". Enough was enough at 9:45pm when I sought the manager which turned into a different kind of game of 'Guess who?'. In the interests of those that are unfamiliar with 'Guess who?' it is a game where each player chooses a mystery character and then using yes or no questions, they try to figure out the other player’s mystery character. When they think they know who their opponent's mystery character is, players make a guess. In time identified the manager and it was clear that he was having a tough night having been one of the gymnastic chefs, barman, waiter, baker and candlestick maker. He made a promise that the food would be ready within the next 20 minutes. That was unfortunately an empty-promise; food came out in dribs and drabs that was either hastily put together, cold, or part cooked. We then left without an apology being bid farewell by a rattled waitress with the manager with his head in his hands. Ultimately this was a terrible dining experience that was made bearable by the one choice of larger and great mates. If you acrobatic food over quality and customer service then this is the place for you!

After planning ahead to ensure a lovely 30th birthday meal with 3 visits before the day to check everything was ok, I was fully let down on the night by manager and staff who now having u all sat down didn't actually care. Had to ask 3 people to take our order after 45 minutes of being ignored. Waited ages for starters which mostly where bland and cold. Not one person came to check we had everything, the guy bringing the food out did not know what the dishes where called or spoke good English so we had to try and work out if it was something we had ordered. Table got cleared an hour later only to be waiting well over an hour and half for mains to come out. This only happened after complaining. No apology at this point . Again no staff came over to explain delay or apologies. All other tables had eaten and left even though some came in after us. 10:30 pm and we just started to have mains come out ( 3.5 hours later ). I would love to say it was worth the wait but not the case. Not everyone got their meals. Complete shambles and a shocking 4-5 hours of terrible service average food and not being made to feel special. Unless ur a small table of 5 or booked the over priced tapanyaki tables where u get a dedicated chef don't bother going.

A friends 30th birthday with a group of 20+ on a centre table seemed great upon arrival at 7pm.I was looking forward to the night ahead having never eaten Japenese. The atmosphere was great, surrounding tables being entertained by chefs juggling eggs and such like, cheers and laughter all around. It wasn't until around 8pm that we realised that the entertainment for the other tables was merely smoke and mirrors which made us forget that we'd been having to go the the bar for our own drinks for the past hour and our food orders still hadn't been taken. At some point an hour or so later some starters arrived... Some didn't. I don't know if the staff were laughing at the situation or laughing at us, but they didn't seem to take it seriously. 10.30pm came, still, mains for some, others not. A very disgruntled waitress shocked at why the table didn't pay (to be fair the manager agreed this). Definitely a first for me when the chef leaves before everyone has been giving a meal. Just to summarise, like I said, I was excited about trying Japenese food, as I'm still awaiting my meal, I still hold the same excitement for trying Japenese food.Top tip - call up the restaurant 4hrs before to place your order and it may... Main meal time! And here is the good bit. Some had eaten.... others hadnt.... a good 4 hours after we ordered...... the chefs had gone home..... the restaurant had told us that no food would be cooked as the chefs had gone home, it would appear that 28 people had been forgotten about! Wow! What a way to treat your customers! Don’t bother, unless you are involved in the main event then they are not interested and at £4.80 a pint (of cheap lager) it’s not worth bankruptcy. I’ve never had to put on my jacket in a restaurant before, but now I can check that one as well. Plain sushi (but what did I really expect two hours drive from the coast ). OK menu, but what keeps this place going is the Teppanyaki show behind the bar. Once you’ve grown tired of «chefs» napalm-treating the food or juggling with their tools, you have to rely on the food. Which was... plain. And you risk freezing your b***s off! Seriously. Too expensive by far.

Four of us went recently to the Tepanyaki Bar at The Moonsha in Derby. The food was excellent, a really good choice of fresh meat, poultry, shellfish and fish. The food couldn't be fresher as it is cooked in front of you by a top class chef, who is not only an excellent chef but also a showman who will keep you thoroughly entertained throughout your meal.

I have visited Moonsha on a number of occasions over the past few months, the food had always been fantastic and the staff are so friendly. Its nice to see its not overpriced compared to a chain sushi restaurant such as Yo Sushi, I would say the sushi was much better too, very fresh!

We ordered a tempura set, sushi set and some extras of gyoza and muscles and teriyaki beef. It was all nice, but only that, nothing that we thought - oh yes we’d get that again or draw us to return. Overall a bit pricey for what was delivered. Best bit was the plum wine!

Me and my partner have ordered sushi and it was by far the worst most disgusting sushi I have ever been served! The fish was terrible, like chewing gum, with a disgusting apearence... We just ate the pieces wish surimi (surimi served in sushi says a lot about the place) and just couldn't eat the pieces with fish... It was extremely expensive (30£ for 10 pieces of 'sushi' + 2 still waters)... The service was bad and unfriendly, there were layers of dust in the windows ....I don't recommend this place to anyone!

Visited several times and the food has always been great but the staff and service are disappointing. Food was served quickly enough, tasted and looked amazing but in the middle of the meal we were asked if we were the couple that had previously dined and dashed based on us being a black couple which i felt was extremely offensive and inappropriate to ask us this. This happened a year ago and we decided not to go there again but our love for sushi got the better of us. Went back February this year and after our meal i handed over the correct amount only for the waitress to come back after going to the till and said we were £4 to £6 short when i clearly handed over the correct amount with a tip. We quietly paid the extra with the tip and politely walked out but this is the last time we will be dining there or ordering take out. Very nice place and amazing food but only 1 staff member has managed to ruined it for us .

Pretty much the archetypal Chinese people do Japanese food restaurant - Chinese decor and staff, (very good) Chinese style fried rice. The sushi set was presented nicely and tasted fresh, but in my book small prawns don't count as "a piece" in a 22 piece sashimi set. Service was above average. Kids plastic plates a plus.

Very disapponting, ordered bento boxes after a long drive from Kent - cheap ingredients, wet salad, charmless and defensive service. On the plus side sushi was OK and the interior of the place fabulous but we were the only customers - so I should have known and beaten a quick retreat. This is actually Chinese and not Japanese.

so cut the story short i ordered veg and he order fish. When order came i asked waitsress "which is veg" only to be responded with an arrogant "well this is what you ordered" answer! I clearly told her to calm down and that i was just clarifying...another (older woman) butted in and attacked me because we got so fed up of explaining. We ate one edamame and one piece of veg sushi and a sip of drink begore we decided to leave and enough was enough. She grabbed my arms, scratched me and ignored the fact that i told her numerous times i was pregnant. I eventually attacked her back as enough was enough. Tye chef even came out after us and explained he saw exactly what happened and he undertsood our side. We have been wanting to come here for weeks and finally when me and hubby got time without the kids this was thr first place we chose. BOY DO WE REGRET IT...SHOCKING SERVICE

Would give zero stars if could but have to give one. Booked for 7.30pm. Arrived a few minutes early and told to sit and wait. Ordered drink as they insisted but nothing said. At 7.50 still nothing so queried to be told tappanyaki bar now ready - seemed to be only one chef who was cooking for large party, no chef at ours. Got starters after 8. No apology for wait etc or explanation. Then sat and waited, and waited. Chef appeared from large party about 40 minutes later and proceeded to entertain the larger party sat with us, completely ignoring is. Finally, after 9pm, got the first of the mains. However nothing special, added to the party of sixes meal which was cooked with ours. The vegetarian meal next to us seemed to be cooked with the same utensils! Complained about lack of service, explanation and long wait. Turned out the couple next to us were booked an hour later and they finished their meal at the same time as us. Absolute rubbish. Poor service, saki offered to say sorry but basically evening ruined. Will NEVER eat there again. AVOID. Apparently not enough chefs - should have told us before sitting down, not at the end of the meal. Left after 9.30 having spent only about 40 minutes with any food.

Fancy trying Japanese food? Moonsha is located one street away from busy Friargate with its plethora of bars and restaurants. The interior is large with two options, a normal table or the teppanyaki island in the centre with the chef cooking and entertaining the diners, and if you're a guy inevitably getting a little involved with egg and food catching (which often doesn't end too well!).

Me and my partner visited here as a random google search (bit risky I know) but the food was great we had a set menu and sat in the centre table with the chef cooking in front of us. He was very funny and chatty and got us playing games such as catching food in our mouths and going behind the station to throw eggs in a hat in our heads. Very daring but great fun! Nice staff friendly atmosphere. Our food was a little pricey but it was fine as portions were huge.

Me and my boyfriend have been here twice. The first time we came was our first date and we came again recently after nearly 2 years. And both times they were spot on. We had gyozas, eel (unagi) Nigiri and a mixed katsu between us. Then my boyfriend had the chicken teriyaki bento box and I had the duck donburi and again but I were totally amazing, we ate every last little bit of food. I had the Skittle cocktail and it was one of the best I've ever had and I'm quite fussy with cocktails. The atmosphere was relaxing and chilled. The staff were lovely, friendly, attentive and smily :) it wasn't over priced at all either, definitely worth the money. I would recommend people try it, it's something a little different to all the generic restaurants you see everywhere. Thank you so much Moonsha xx

We have been eating at Moonsha for years and always had good food and great service. Because of this we always tip at least 10% of the bill. We found out on our last visit that the tips are kept by the management not shared amongst the staff. Until this changes we will not be eating there again. Good managers share the tips to motivate staff and do not take any for themselves.

Visited last night. Very disappointment. We did the tapanyaki/hibatchi selection. We had the Niku set. What basically was cheap poor Chinese food. Bamboo shoots, chewy meats in plum sauces and dry egg friend rice. The only nice part was the steak, but was served with Chinese stir fry veg. As someone who has been to Japan a several times I can say hand down this was not Japanese food. They didn't even use glutenous rice what is a basic and staple for rice in Japan. Years ago the hibatchi was entertaining and authentic. Now it is tired and cheap with out the price tag to follow. For the 2 of us 1 Niku set and one cheaper sakura set, tap water and a cheap 120ml sake hakkasan what was extremely over priced we paid £92!!! A Chinese takeaway would of been nicer. I'm not sure when moonsha started cutting there produce and substituteing ingredients, but we certainly won't be returning again. If you want a take of Japanese food, this is not the place.

This was the first time we have been. The food was great and plentiful. We got to watch our sushi being made too. Being both vegetarian there was quite a lot of choice on the menu. I had a bento box of vegetable curry and it was really good and very filling. I also had a green tea cocktail (mocktail) that was perfectly balanced in sweetness. My friend had various sushi and the vegetable curry. We both enjoyed the food and the lady serving (Helen? She makes all the desserts) was friendly and helpful. All in all I recommend this place and am looking forward to going again. You can view the menu on their website so it gives you an idea of prices but I didn't think it was too expensive.
