This place is a complete joke of a restaurant. Went there for Sunday dinner. They brought out dishes which were half of what the menu promised (but obviously no one in the kitchen bothered to check or didn't care!@), food was half cooked, we all felt less than happy afterwards....and the only saving grace was the waiting staff, who tried their best to save a less than enjoyable evening and meal. Definitely a place to be avoided! Way too expensive for what it is....

Six of us had drinks and food Saturday evening. The heaters in the covered outside area were very welcome. Service was good. The Butcombe Original was very good as were the burgers. Limited menu choices, but every one enjoyed their food.

The whole menu sounded incredible. I had the flat iron chicken (thighs) with chimichurri sauce and a yummy mayonnaise with polenta and chorizo chips! My friend had the burger and said it’s the best burger she’s had. I had the gluten free sticky toffee pudding with rum and raison ice cream with caramelised pecans. It was incredible and huge! The service was incredible, especially with my gluten intolerance. The allergen menu is very clear. I am amazed by the range of gluten free options available. I am really looking forward to my next visit.

After years of inconsistent quality food & bad service it is a relief to have Butcombe take over this pub from Wadworth. The food is now consistently good, and they have actually employed some professional staff instead of kids on minimum wage. The staff were very attentive, and nothing was too much trouble.Sadly the choice of pie I wanted had sold out (well, it was about 3:00pm!) but I had a burger instead and the portions were very generous.I must mention the chips. Having dined at The Hand & Flowers, I can hands down state that the chips at The Mill are better than Tom Kerridge's triple cooked chips (and don't cost £7.50!)Finally the beer selection if far better now. I hope that The Mill stays as good as it is, because I live over the road!!

We booked a table well in advance for lunch the first Saturday out of lockdown (outdoor bookings only). We were seated on the under cover patio area. It was chilly but there were plenty of heaters and fluffy sheepskins to keep the chill off. Lots of effort had been put into making it an attractive place to eat - flowers on the tables, proper napkins etc. The food was excellent. We had ham hock terrine, crab croqetas, bavette steak and ox cheek pie - all delicious. The food was a little slow to appear but it was only the second day of opening and they were fully booked so I expect the kitchen was still getting up to speed. Lovely Butcombe beer. The service was friendly and charming from all the waiting staff. The manager came out a couple of times and spoke to every table to make sure everyone was happy. He explained some staff had come in from their other pubs to train up the new team and get things up and running properly. Delighted to see the place under new management with such good food and service - under Wadworth it had gone really downhill in the last two or three years to the point where we had stopped going. Frankly astonished to read some of the recent critical reviews as we had a very different experience. We couldn't fault it and will definitely be back.

Went on a Friday lunchtime to meet a friend. Friendly service but a bit slow and forgot a wine order. I guess they are getting into their stride but come a hot summer and a full beer garden then it will need to be quicker. Food was very nice with thankfully a short menu. But the place needs to remember it’s a pub, not just fine dining, and get some simpler, cheaper dishes on the menu suitable for a weekday lunch. Otherwise it’s a pricey place to drop in.

The Mill has potential to be a good place and the building is nice, so too the beer. The problem is the food, over priced and below average quality. My main meal was pre-packaged fare, and lacking taste, and most likely defrosted. This might be workable but not in this instance and the management of this pub chain need to do much more if they want to retain custom.

Myself and three friends had booked a table on a Saturday evening at 8 pm and had specifically requested a table under cover (which they confirmed) as it was forecast to rain. We arrived on time to see all covered seating was occupied and the server at the door gestured for us to take a table outside and shrugged off our questions about a table under cover. It had rained minutes before we arrived and the table was soaking wet so we could not sit down. We asked a waiter if we could have some kitchen roll, we cleaned the table but there wasn’t enough so again we stood around the table, with the staff cognizant to the state of our table, and asked again for some more roll and cleaned it ourselves. It was now obvious that it would rain again imminently and, as we were planning to eat, it was important that we were moved under cover. We asked a waiter that, as we had booked, if and when a table under cover becomes free if we could have it to which he nodded and said he’d see what he could do. 4 - 5 minutes later we watched as a table for four became available and the same waiter we had just spoken to showed a group that were waiting outside the pub to the table. A member from our group inquired as to why we weren’t moved to which no real reason was given and no assurance that we would be moved under cover. This happened a second time, with another table of four becoming available and another group taking priority over us. By this point we’re justifiably irate and wary of the grey clouds. Either the manager or a senior member of staff comes to talk to us and we do finally get an apology and recognition that we booked under cover. However, we insist we still need seating under cover and the truculent member of staff said “if you’re not happy then leave” at which point staying became pointless. We do understand that it was a Saturday and the restaurant was busy, however we had booked, were denied the table we had booked and were met with apathy and then hostility by the staff instead of hospitality. It also seems from the other reviews that I am not the only one that has experienced dreadful customer service here.

Booked earlier in the week for a ride out on the motorcycle and a spot of Sunday afternoon lunch. Even though we arrived a little late we were shown to our table with a smile. We were lucky enough to have been allocated a table undercover although as the website clearly states that cover is not guaranteed we took a wrap and a blanket just in case. There were a few items missing from the menu a good sign in my book indicating fresh ingredients and good food. We had the lamb sausage roll and the ham hock terrine to start both lovely, small starter dishes. For the main we had the cod and a burger. Both dishes were tasty, well proportioned and served by super friendly staff. There was a bit of a wait but it was Sunday lunch time, they were busy what else could you expect. For pudding we had the yummy little chocolate doughnuts with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Yum. The entertainment were the rude arrogant man with his extremely drunk mistress on the table nearby. Although the staff tried their utmost there was no pleasing this horrendous couple who loudly discussed getting rid of her bloke in exchange for his cheque book and credit card! He took delight in belittling the waitresses to tears and even more delight in confusing and traumering them enough to get money off his bill and free wine. Throughout the staff handled as best they could but eventually the landlord told them to leave. All in a lovely afternoon out. Good food, reasonably priced, good service and pleasant surroundings with a bit of free entertainment thrown in to boot! Thank you to management, staff, arrogant creepy bloke and super drunk plastic surgery addicted mistress! X

Booked a table a few weeks ago and had an e mail confirmation. When we got there we were told our booking was 1pm, it wasn’t what I had booked or had confirmation for should have been 12.30pm. We were told our allocated table undercover was not free until 1pm so we agreed to sit on a table outside the cover for drinks. We were then told by a lady that there would not be a table for us undercover and we couldn’t book those, it was potluck. There were other tables free undercover but were told we couldn’t be seated there so had to sit outside the cosy cover. No rational reason given and I wasn’t happy. Dylan who is always a star apologised as it was out of his hands. Service very slow as I think lots of people arrived at the same time, luckily we were not in a rush. Staff were lovely but as I say, very slow. Quite a few items not available on the menu e.g. catch of the day etc. Didn’t have starters and got main courses at about 2pm. 2 tortellini which friends said was nice. 1 roast beef was said to be delicious and 1 veggie roast was sent back as was cold, came back a little warmer but was delicious. Drinks very slow to arrive and waited 20 mins for the last order after asking 3 people to chase up. Puddings were ok. Chocolate delice wasn’t for me but the Baileys ice cream on top was lovely. The cheddar strawberry pud was deemed ‘amazing’. Weather was kind with only a short shower (brrrr), would have been much happier to have been undercover and was disappointed that other people got to go under cover even after we asked. So, in summary..... food was nice, drinks were good (the beers were well received), the service nice but so slow. 2 course lunch took over 3 .5hours but we were not in a rush, very disappointed about the table allocation. As this is our local and we love The Mill we will be back and am sure the teething problems will get better.

Reserved a table under shelter knowing it was going to rain. We were sent out to outside table and ordered to wipe it down ourselves. We then asked if we could move to the next available table under cover but told that there was no chance. After making a final request to move when we saw one available we were told to leave because we “smelt bad” which is completely inappropriate... very disappointing, do not recommend visiting at all.

I visited this week for the first time with a family member, the waitress had an attitude from the start, wouldn't communicate properly and took forever to do everything. We had two starters, Halloumi and vegetarian fritters, they were OK but the sauces were watery and tasteless. Mains we had a Camembert and a vegan burger, bland, poor quality, toast with Camembert burnt. We then had what was supposed to be chocolate brownies with ice cream, ice cream was clearly cheap shop brought ice cream, brownies weren't brownies but actually cake, probably the worst chocolate cake I've ever tasted. I can deal with below average food but when the service is awful as well it should be noted. When we told our waitress the Camembert was cold and toast burnt (it was basically untouched) she looked at me and then walked off without saying a word. So I was pretty angry when she brought the bill over and it was still on there, without any explanation. In the end I told her that I wasn't willing to pay for it. I shouldn't have paid for the deserts either, they were ridiculous. Won't be returning. The girl should receive some further training for good customer service.

After much discussion with family decided to give going out for lunch a go.Not a good idea.Starters poor quality, prawn type cocktail on a cos lettuce leaf.......vegetable rostti not too bad but chilli sauce obviously not tasted by chef as it was very hot and tasted of Tabasco sauce! The mains were so disappointing turkey dinner, had no pigs in blankets or stuffing on plate, the gravy was like water. The bird roast was hard. The sprouts were like marbles and rolled around the plate, not to be stabbed. Not everyone had cauliflower cheese or parsnips.Pudding nearly as bad the Creme brûlée was like runny custard. One was sent back to be replaced by one the same.We had been told the Manager would come and see us this did not happen. We were told the brûlée had been put under the grill to brown it.......this would cause it to be runny!!!The serving was not good either, no smiles etc., even knowing how busy they were going to be as we had to pay in advance ‘things’were not good an expensive venture. This could be such a good pub with a chef that could cook and some of the staff interacted.

We often call into this pub for a drink and, at midday on a Saturday, we called in for a beer. We sat on one of two empty tables and ordered drinks. After half an hour a unsmiling discourteous 'waitress' produced a reserved sign and plonked it on our table. She further stated that we had to vacate the table by 13:30! I asked the server behind the bar why we hadn't been informed that the table had been reserved and he claimed that it had "just been reserved over the 'phone" and if I wanted to complain he could call a manager.Dreadful ill mannered behaviour and we'll not visit this disagreeable pub again.

I'm a local resident, the Mill is less than a ten minute walk from my house and I occasionally come here for drinks, the beer garden is nice in summer. I've eaten here a few times and it has never been anything more than 'ok' but as its local you tend to forgive that and come back every now and then. Well, tonight my friend and I (also a Camelsdale resident) came for a mid week bite to eat and catch up. We ordered a bottle of wine (fine) and a main course each. I had sea bass with potato puree, chorizo butter and veg and she had roast chicken with seasonal veg. The food was revolting, utterly revolting, tasteless, dry and lacking in any seasoning or finesse. I asked the waitress if there was any possibility of sauce for my seabass (there was no chorizo butter in sight) and she came back with some lemon juice and mayonaise which was insulting. The waitress was pleasant and seemed embarrased. The chef is clearly incompetent, its the sort of dinner i'd cobble together on a ,monday night after a crazy day at work with no enthusiasm whatsoever. I will NEVER eat here again, in fact my friends and I have a booking for 2 weeks time and iv'e just informed then we are cancellning and going somewhere else. The white hart in Witley is really good, the Duke of Cumberland is great and even the white horse in Haslemere is streets ahead of this place. Don't waste your money. Its very rare for me to be annoyed enough to write a negative review but I have nothing good to say about the food here.

The land lady was very patronising and didn’t give a warm welcome at all. Someone like that should not be working in a place like this when they have to speak to people daily. I will never be returning and I’m sure the customer that I witnessed that was made to feel uncomfortable will not be returning either. I’m very disappointed.

No burgers were available, not told until we ordered them, a goujon sandwich was only served for lunch but a kids goujon meal was available?! The difference between the small ham egg and chips and a full size was one piece of ham and 4 chips but £5 extra was charged. In fairness the food was tasty but not a lot for the money. The Mill used to be a very run down pub but now it is a really nice 'local' - it's been very sympathetically modernised and has a great food offering at good prices - it isn't a 'gastro pub' as such - but then you don't pay 'gastro pub' prices! For example, a homemade beefburger topped with Dorset Blue Vinny cheese and crispy pancetta, onion rings and chips is £13.25 and excellent fish, chips and mushy peas is £13.95. i think this is well priced for the area. They also do a good range of light lunches - great sandwiches all under £10. we're very lucky that it is our local.

An excellent Sunday lunch with family at their local pub. Great atmosphere with good food - Sunday roasts - and friendly and helpful service. It was a pleasure being here.

We chose the Mill for our Christmas lunch as the menu looked quite nice and more options than nearby restaurants. It has a nice pub and restaurant area. The outside looks nice for a cold beer in summer. I had pulled ham croquettes for starter which was quite nice. Then we had a sorbet before mains which was quite refreshing. The roast was good (unlike the beef roast we had here 2 days ago which was very dry!). The baileys cheesecake was very average. The cheese plate was even worse. Plating was very lousy and not inviting to eat at all! The people who ordered steak waited for over an hour for their food, we felt lucky that we had roast. Overall we had a nice lunch but not sure about next time.

I moved to the area in July, and as this is the nearest pub to me (other than the Apple tree) I’ve chosen here to go for a beer on several occasions, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends/family.

Booked a table for 6 people at 1.00pm. Clearly only two bar/waiting staff on duty which were so busy they struggled to acknowledge customers let alone serve them. Took ages for a drink/food order to be taken, then the food didn’t arrive until 3.00pm!! We actually ordered some crisps to tide us over. The management clearly needs to invest in proper staffing to cover the volume of people and level of service. Notes to management - staff your establishment to the proper level, train your team to know what the soup of the day is at the start of shift. Ordered two steaks only to be told they had run out.

Arrived at 1.00pm as per booking and our first course arrived 2 hours later....3.00pm no communication from staff, when asked it was "sorry but there's still some tickets in front of you, we've got a table of 15 in the other room..." when food arrived it was not worth the wait. Small portions, not as the menu described, sucks that this is the only local place in haslemere.

It was a birthday meal for my friend, but I’m afraid it will be our last. Unsmiling and obviously bored waitress who completely forgot to put our starters order through and brought our mains out first, then pretended they were intended for another table, which they obviously weren’t. I watched her subsequently put the starters order through. The starters were decidedly uninspiring, the mains were then eventually brought out and it was obvious my fish and chips had been kept warm. The chips were dry, the mushy peas cold and meagre, and the batter on the fish greasy and a bit soggy. The tartar sauce tasted off.

What a ‘clicky’ place. Best watch what I write too, otherwise the wrath of Imogen will bear down upon me. Imogen, darling, reading your answer to the last report speaks volumes. Your sarcasm just about better than your grammar. Probably the most unprofessional and impolite reply I’ve read. And you’re a manager? What ghetto taught you your interpersonal customer relations ‘skills.’ You probably did more damage to the business with your cocky reply than any negative report could do. Still, you had to have the last word, huh...

We are locals. Been coming for 10 years. Previous manager cared. Current just lives there. Never speaks to customers. Went this evening from 6:00pm to 10:00pm she just appeared twice to pee her dogs from the flat above and scuttled back upstairs without a word to anyone.

Four of us met for Sunday lunch - I got the very last space in the car park - that did not bode well. We sat at our table and gave our drinks orders - no Guinness: what sort of pub runs out of Guinness??? The drinks arrived and we waited, noting the pub was crowded and noisy, but it was a rainy afternoon. It seemed to take longer than usual before a waitress came to take our order, but again, they were busy. It seemed to take longer than usual before our starters arrived, but again, they were busy. (Can you spot a pattern here?) We sat with our dirty starter plates in front of us for quite a while. We were then told they had run out of roast beef, so we chose something else. We waited. Eventually, the manager came over and mumbled that they were out of beef, so we'd need to choose something else. Again, we chose something else. A full 90 minutes after we arrived, they brought us our main courses. They apologised for the delay and brought us two dishes of cauliflower cheese to apologise. By the time we ordered our pudding, the pub was nearly empty, so it didn't take too long although longer than we would have expected. We asked for the bill and after looking at it, we had a query. We waited. I could see the waitress over a half wall, but she didn't notice us. Finally, I went over to her - she was busy sorting cutlery rather than seeing to customers who were already there. She resolved our query and I put my card into the machine. When it offered me: "press enter to leave a gratuity or press clear not to" I was dismayed not to find an option: "throw the machine across the room to show how you really feel." I pressed "clear." In summary: the food was good and they seemed vaguely aware their service was extremely slow and inefficient, but we shall not be returning and suggest unless you want an "all day lunch" that you also go elsewhere.

Popped in for lunch following a recommendation by a family member who lives nearby. Easy to book a table on line and warm welcome from staff on arrival. Bottle of water put onto table with glasses straight away which was a nice touch. Good selection of wines on the list available by glass and bottle. I had the halloumi burger and my partner had the catch of the day which was haddock. Both meals well presented, generous portion sizes and delicious. We will definitely visit again if in the area.

My family live in Haslemere and because of distance we don’t get together very often. We had a fabulous Mothers’ Day here in 2017, much enjoyed by all and food excellent. What has happened in a year? Today, the weather was awful and they weren’t busy. Our sitting was for 2pm which we had booked earlier in the week - so it wasn’t unanticipated. We waited an hour before our starters and that had to be prompted. The roast meals were off the menu and only pork left. We were offered chicken, which wasn’t on the menu and having to wait an hour and half for our main meal - clearly chicken had not been cooked. We had three small children in our party - no children’s menu on a Sunday apparently. Why were we not advised when booking? There were sufficient staff but no one approached us to explain the wait, apologise. There was a blonde woman who may or may not have been in charge but her attitude was one of complete indifference. The meal arrived - everything was over cooked and not at all appetising. After my complaining did we get an offer of a free dessert, but quite frankly we were tired with waiting, the children were hungry and getting bored and I would have preferred to have paid for dessert if we had felt we were not an inconvenience. The only person with any professionalism was our young waitress. Won’t be visiting again.

Thank you to all the staff at the Mill who looked after us so well on the hottest day of the year. We booked the function room to run a training course and the room was really comfortable albeit hot but not as hot as outside. We had drinks orders taken and brought to us and chilled bottled water. There were lots of people in the bar and outside but the staff made sure that we had everything we needed and were very patient with us especially when we wanted all the tables moved.

I never write bad reviews, but after our experience today I feel compelled to. I went with my two boys for a quick lunch and play outside as a summer holiday treat. It didn’t seem very busy but we had to wait over an hour for our food. No one came to apologise about the delay until I chased it. When the food came it was awful. My son’s sausage and mash was inedible and all dried up, the bacon in my sandwich was cold and chewy and the bread was stale. We had specifically asked for my son’s burger to come without cheese - it arrived with melted cheese on it. When I complained we were offered a drink or dessert, neither of which we wanted, I had to ask for a refund for the food. We were not the only ones who were dissatisfied and the service and food has really put us off visiting again.

I wrote an excellent review of this pub when we had a family Christmas dinner a couple of years ago. The manager Eddie, who had taken over the pub when it was refurbished, brought it up to a first class standard. Unfortunately he left shortly after I had written the review, to take over another failing pub in the chain. Since then, we have visited the pub several times for lunch and, last night, for dinner with friends. Over this time, the quality of the food and service has plummeted! I would not recommend visiting this pub to eat.
