We visited this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon, there were only two tables so it was not that busy. We saw two different types of spring rolls and we weren't sure which one to choose, so we asked the waiter for advice but he spoke such poor English that we didn't really know what he was trying to say to us. We ordered the Mien Tay spring roll and green papaya and prawn salad as starters: whilst the salad taste refreshing, there was a strand of hair on one of the prawns. The lettuce that came with the spring rolls were not washed properly and had quite a lot of dirt in it, we had to asked the waiter to change it for us. Despite this the spring rolls were quite crispy and tasty. For main we ordered the fried sea bass with lemon grass and chilli and an Asian veg called Un Choi, both dishes were quite tasty. However, the steam rice again had a strand of hair in it which was quite off putting. The decor is quite tacky and really needs significant restoration. Overall I would say that whilst the food was tasty and reasonably priced, the standard of hygiene is low and the interior is not so pleasant. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is not used to eating foreign food, or street type food.

My partner and I tried this restaurant at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had starters of crispy pancake filled with pork & prawns and a beef dish and for mains had the goat and beef with lemon grass and chilli accompanied by a dish of rice one of noodles. All the dishes were very tasty, vibrant and fresh, especially the goat. The mains beef was nice but dry - I wouldn't order it on our next visit. I had a couple of bottles of Siagon beer and my husband had orange and lemonade. The beer was reasonable at £3 a bottle, but the 2 glasses of of orange and lemonade were almost £12 which was ridiculous. However, even with this the bill was just under £48 so not an expensive meal. The food was good, the service was good and the restaurant itself was OK, not intimate and not somewhere where you would linger. The chairs were hard and the tables covered with paper cloths and paper napkins which I really don't like. For saying this, we did make quite a mess so I can understand why they use the disposable ones. I just think that as the food is so good, they could make more of the place by enhancing the dining experience. All in all, well worth a visit and we will definitely go again.

If you're interested in sophisticated or themed decor walk on by. However if you taste buds are in need of a something new then give Mien Tay a try.I inderstand it is part of a 'mini-chain' with two other venues in London. Located in a Tudor building on Sheep Street it is easy to miss - and, from appearances alone, had I not heard good things about the menu I may have given this one a miss. We visited on a Sunday lunchtime. The menu is original and imaginative, matched by an excellent wine menu. A good Italian red was approx £13. With advice from the waiter we had chargrilled quails and beef wrapped in wild Betel leaves for starters. For mains stir fried goat with and sea food curry - this was acompanied by Morning Glory (a kind of water spinach) and fried rice.Everything was delicious, fresh and full of flavours that stimulated a tired pallette. We finished with a deliciously sweet Vietnamese coffee (made with condensed milk). Service was friendly, knowledgable and discrete. Would recommend. Only draw back is payment by cash only (there is a cash point three doors up from the restaurant). Can't wait to sample other dishes like eel and frog on the menu plus, clay curry pots.

What a lucky find this place is form: just a few miles from home. Stumbled upon it and took a chance on the reviews that said ' great food'.They were right! Delicious, absolutely top notch. Adorned with vegetables and leaves that I have not seen before, I tried the signature starter dish of quail and the vietnamese traditional goat main for the first time after listening to very caring and interested advice from the waitress. What I really liked was the advice about balancing the intense flavours of the main dish with plain steamed rice. It was really pleasurable to be both both involved educated at the same time. My partner tried Sea Bream. Lovely. If, like me, you are interested in the food and dont mind about paper tablecloths or the place being devoid of finery then you are likely to enjoy a real treat in a small country town restaurant. Niot expensive for what we had. Will definitely go back to check out further.

The restaurant is housed in a very old and traditional English building, which is a bit of a contrast against the Vietnam inspired decor! We also ordered vietnmese curry and goat with some rice and noodles, all of which was very tasty, my wife found that they used alot of onions to bulk it out, which I dont mind, but others may not enjoy.Bill was reasonable allthough take cash as they dont accept cards for some reason.

For years we had visited Chi Chi's and it was such a shame for Wellingborough when Sang and his wife decided to retire, however he thoroughly recommended the new owners saying that he and his family visited their London restaurants regularly. We were all a bit hesitant (never having really tried Vietnamese food) but decided to give it a go. First the positives - the food was lovely and so fresh. We all had starters including spring rolls (so crispy) and duck among others. I have to say that the crispy duck was probably the best I have ever had. Even the salads to accompany each dish were fresh vegetables and herbs, they tasted as if they had just been picked from the garden. All of the main courses ordered were just as good and I cannot fault the food at all. Wine was reasonably priced for a bottle in a restaurant, so there were no complaints there either. Negatives? - not many. The building is a very old building of Wellingborough, standing next to what was originally the entrance to the Zoo. The building is listed and full of character but because of its listing, I would envisage that it's very difficult to make any changes inside. Therefore it does look a bit dated, although the wooden floor was better than the old carpet. The paper table cloths and napkins are not good, I much prefer a proper table cloth. I personally also miss Sang's personal touch, opening the door on your entrance and departure from the restaurant, taking and hanging of coats, the laying of your napkins into your laps, little chats and more than one bowl of prawn crackers (for 8 of us) - just little touches that make all the difference to a visit. Put the two together and I would have rated this as a 5.Don't be afraid to try this restaurant - yes there are a few strange dishes on the menu but there are also all the favourite dishes - give it a try.

The night was busy so service a little slow and courses did not come together. In our party of 8 I was served my starter last, which was the fab crispy pancake with pork and prawns, but it arrived after everyone else had finished theirs! Paper tablecloths and paper napkins give a feeling of a cafe, or maybe a French bistro if you are in a good mood.I got a very welcome reception, explanation on all the courses I wanted to ask about and attentive service throughout.Went for the quail, nice; soft shell crabs, very nice; chargrilled goat, very very nice.Somebody somewhere coplained about an old cigarette in a plant pot. That is actually a house shrine that belongs to the Vietnamese religion. The pot is filled with sand and holds the incense sticks. What comes to the rude service, I believe that has to do with the language barrier; the English not understanding that the foreigners are different.

We met with friends to try this recommended restaurant. The location is a very old thatched building in the heart of Wellingborough town centre. To be honest, it needs some renovation. The restaurant was almost full of diners when we arrived at 7.15pm. After a small and amusing misunderstanding, (language difficulty) we were seated upstairs with our friends. I believe that there were some slow service issues with diners that evening, so do visit, but not if you are in a hurry. Our meal was brought to us promptly and every aspect of it was delicious. I can personally recommend the quail with garlic, honey and spices and then the chicken curry in a clay pot. Everyone agreed that the food was first rate. The cost of the meal was £80. We all had two courses, a bottle of the very good white house wine, a couple of beers for the men and a couple of soft drinks. They only accept cash, but a quick visit to a nearby cash point solved that problem. The waiter was pleasant and we shared a joke or two with him during service, in spite of the language difficulty. Lots of trying to make eye contact, trying to get some one to come over and attend to our table. Having responded to Clive James's stated claim that Vietnamese food was the best in the world, I have, for the last twenty years always got terribly excited upon hearing that a Vietnamese establishment has opened nearby. Mien Tay had been recommended to me by a friend and also by AA Gill, who is sadly not a friend. So I was excited and ravenous when I took a friend to Welingborough's Mien Tay last Wednesday. The food did not disappoint. Indeed, I would struggle to find any fault with it. the starter of honeyed quail was superb as was the main course of bream with mango. The service though was fifth rate and one of our waiters was borderline rude. I'd ordered a jug of tap water, a reasonable request, I'd say. When I asked the waiter thirty minutes later what had happened to it, he shrugged me aside and told me to wait. I think half an hour is more than long enough to wait for something which is easily obtained so I was having none of it. the service throughout the evening was riddled with mistakes. There appeared to be two waiters. one was very pleasant, the other was not. The problem, as I now see it, was a lack of communication between the two of them. My experience would not deter me from dining there again but I would expect the service and attitude of the staff to match the quality of the food next time.

I first visited the Mien Tay shortly after it opened in July 2011. I was wary as having been so in love with Chi Chi's for many years it was a shame when it was gone...also I have spent time in Vietnam and loved the food so had high expectations. These were met and surpassed. Although I was unsure of the decor when we first arrived, green walls! I was pleasently surprised it hadn't lost it's charm. We ordered Traditional Crispy Pancake with Pork, Prawn & Beansprouts to start...it was delicious! More than enough for the two of us to share as a starter. We shared a selection of mains with plain rice. It was perfect, the flavours were sublime and the rice was proper sticky rice that you can actually eat with chopsticks! We were so full we didn't have a pudding! We found the meal extremely reasonably priced as well. So much so we recommended it to all the family, and we visited again in November.Again the food didn't disappoint, we tried the squid in salt, pepper and garlic this time and it was amazing, I could eat it every day! We found the service to be top notch as well, with 12 of us the waiter coped brilliantly keeping drinks flowing as well as prawn crackers! Food was delivered in a timely manner with suitable breaks between courses. Out of 12 there were no complaints - and trust me when I say we can be fussy. My partner and I have visited again in December, just before Christmas and it was buzzing. Almost full but with a bright, warm and inviting atmosphre. Food again was perfect, I couldn't wish for a better restaurant on my door step. There are plenty of options for all eaters, and the waiter was extremely helpful in suggesting dishes. I will be going back again and again as it truly is amazing!

We called into the Mien Tay after hearing that Wellingborough had it's very own Vietnamese. Unfortunately the decor is very tired and dated but the building looks like it must be listed so I am sure that must be part of the problem. The service was quick and friendly and the food was excellent. We had chicken satay and quail to start and then Vietnamese curry (absolutely delicious) and sweet and sour chicken. The portions were large especially the rice which was perfectly cooked. Thank you for opening up one of your restaurants outside London. We're spreading the word!

When we visited the restaurant was half full and only one waiter on duty but we did not have to wait too long for service. He was very friendly and happy to explain some of the more unusual items on the menu,This was our second visit and the food was again excellent - I highly recommend the Goat with galangal in particular. In a town with few decent restaurants this is a real find and we will definitely be going back again in the very near future!

Service lousy ,staff need to learn how to wait table. Maybe learn a little more English,so as to understand customers better. Asked for glass of still water got hot tap water.

If I had found this gem of a restaurant in the metropolis I wouldn't be sharing my excitement with you. As it is if we don't all beat a path to it's door we are likely to see it disappear. Just how Mien Tay came to open an eatery in a culinary desert like Wellingborough, after their successes in Shoreditch and Battersea I'll never know, but I'm certainly not complaining. If you try it once I guarantee you'll be going back time and time again, just like me.

This place is a little gem! We are truly privileged to have such amazing food in Wellingborough! I have been a couple of times now (the experience only getting better with each visit), and recently took my parents who thoroughly enjoyed it! The restaurant isn't glamourous, it is very simple, no frills...However don't let that stop you, the food is simply wonderful! The staff are great too, as some of the dishes/ways of eating are new, and they are ever willing to help & guide you. I really can't say enough about the place, the food is flavourful, fresh & never disappoints! All thats left to say is, let's support this little restaurant Wellingborough! (As its not always that busy, however this seems to be improving).I for one would hate to see it disappear.

We visited on Fathers Day this year and were so impressed by the friendly service, homely atmosphere, but most importantly just delicious food, (a huge choice too), that we were determined to go again, which we did this July. With 6 in our group (including 1 vegetarian and 2 pescitarians), everyone had ample choice and got an outstanding meal, the sea food being exceptional in my opinion.

My wife and I stumbled upon this place by happy accident on an evening out and we've been back three times within a month. Exceptional Vietnamese cuisine and friendly, thoughtful service - I just hope it gets the support it so thoroughly deserves. The food is as good as any I've had in South East Asia - my squid with chili and salt was divine and reminded me of the fabled 'Rainbow Restaurant' in Hong Kong. If you're unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine, the staff do their very best to explain the culture and etiquette behind it. As I type this I am still dreaming of the beef in coconut juice and rice wine cooked in a bubbling hotpot. A privilege to have a less supported cuisine of this standard in my little Wellingborough.

I drove past earlier in the day and spotted new (temporary?) signage at what was formerly Chi Chi's chinese restaurant. Who were Mien Tay?Getting home, I looked them up on the internet, but little to be found regarding the newest Wellingborough restaurant. I did find that Mien Tay was the name of a small group (2) of extremely populat Vietnamese restaurants in London.I popped in before end of the lunch sitting and checked on takeaway options .. available but pickup only and resolved to give them a try, which I did this evening.I asked for help in selecting a meal for two :Starters :Soft Shell Crab (2) = £8 - Very goodChargrilled Minced Beed in Betel leaves = £5.50 very small portion with large salad .. maybe not such good value.MainsPho (Broth with Beef (enough for 2) = £6.30Stir Fried Goat with Galangal - £6.80.... with steamed rice (unfortunately not added to our order).Food was all excellent ... though I caution you to check the menu for some prices .. I don't believe that our takeaway version of the menu has all the correct prices on it .... £6.70 for a portion of steamed rice? The ambience of the restaurant isn't great as the decor is somewhat tired, but to be fair the building might just be the oldest in Wellinborough and is stteped in history ... but the Tudor wood and stone design offers limited scope to do anything with the walls. However, it does feel like it is in a bit of a timewarp and it would be nice to see some character/makeover introduced to help the ambience.Service seemed pretty brisk and attentive while I waited (some Asian diners present too - hopefully a good sign of authenticity), but the restaurant only had ~6 covers in early evening. A warm welcome to Mien Tay in Wellingborough .. we will be back..

Excellent choice of teas all served in pretty china teapots with proper cups and saucers. Good selection of cakes too. A good old-fashioned tea shop.

I was wandering around town looking for somewhere to sit down and eat with a friend from outside the area and my wife. My friend and I had had a lot to drink and were feeling a little worse for wear, although still polite, concious and aware of others. We came in here because it looked clean and inviting and didn't look too busy. None of us had eaten at a Polish restaurant before so didn't really know what to expect. Anyway, the staff were helpful and friendly and we chose our dishes from the menu: I had what I think was called a beef stroganoff pancake with chopped veg (like the stuff you get with a takeaway Kebeb). Beautiful. My friend had what I think were pork chops in batter and these were delicious too. All very hearty and we couldn't finish our meals. The waitress wrapped them upo for us to take home and when I came to eat mine the next day it was even tastier! Very fast and friendly service made this a pleasant experience and we all decided it wouldn't be our last. So glad we came here.
