Merchant Chippie in Glasgow City

Had takeaway so no proper rating for atmosphere. Food always freshly cooked, mainly to order and taste is excellent.

We liked it, but out of the three of us one found a hair in her fries and everything was a bit too greasy. Taste was awesome though!! Definitely worth a try if you want authentic fast food fish and chips! The fish was really tasty

We were in Glasgow for a concert and were just coming back to our hotel, pretty late at night and I searched on google maps for best chippie in Glasgow and compared a few of them. We decided to go to this one and we are delighted that we did! Not only the best chippie in Glasgow, but for us, the best that we have tried in the UK. Thanks to all at Merchant Chippie

Ordered through just eat. Paid full price including delivery charge. Showed delivered but wasn't. Contacted the restaurant for advice. Told to Contact just eat. Payment processed. Asked if can come collect the food, Told would have to pay full price at restaurant. Left feeling hungry out of pocket an disappointed 😞 just eat have confirmed your restaurant has taking the payment an they have refused to refund. Just eat have confirmed you have taking the £32 and I haven't received a refund. Absolutely disgusted 😤

In Glasgow for the weekend recently. I was keen to try a fried Mars Bar and this chippie came up on my recommendations. The fried Mars Bar was very naughty, but very nice. Definitely an occasional treat.

Good haggis and black pudding.. Friendly staff despite the language barrier.. It's worth it if you're in the corner

This restaurant will accept orders from Just Eat in the full knowledge that delivery drivers may not collect orders. They will continue to do business with Just Eat in order to make money at customers expense. Poor Service.

Both haddock and chips were soggy . Uncooked fries . Chips tasted like boiled and not fired . Pathetic

This is a full FIVE STAR for sure! Food is everything, they speak for themselves. Server is friendly and feels very cosy even in winter by the window. You will somehow bypass this shop on your way to the Cathedral anyway, why not just pop in to try.

Just back with my pizza supper,Never again will i go back here,Chips where deffo not fresh,Need to sack the fryer it's an insult to have Italian flags all around the inside of the shop,maybe all the staff need to visit a traditional Italian run chippy and see how the food should look and taste.

Fish was great! Deep fried Mars bar was a first - if you love warm, gooey chocolate you can't go wrong with it! Piping hot mushy peas. Lots of regulars came through while I was there. Simple vibe, solid fish!

Discovered this chippie last time we were in Glasgow. Made a return visit and again not disappointed. Lovely piece of fish freshly cooked, and so were the chips. Tea very hot. Worth the walk along Ingram Street. Will definitely return. Visited again a year later had haggis supper and my husband a black pudding supper. Large portions highly recommended

I've been coming to Merchant Chippy for a number of years, and despite continuing to use it, the standards have continued to slip over the past couple of years while the prices continue to rise. The other day, I ordered a fish supper. The fish was well fried but there wasn't much meat to it and the chips were brick hard, tasteless and not peeled properly. My last visit may well be my last, sadly.

This was a wonderful little place that serves Haggis. It's wonderful with malted vinegar and salt.

This is definitely the best fish & chips in Glasgow. It accompanied me through my student life there in Glasgow, can’t even forget this place. Hope it would stay as long as it can and I can’t wait for my next visit. I miss ya merchant chippie.

I had lunch here last week, the setup and atmosphere was okay. Coming to food: fish was flaky and batter was crispy from the edges I liked it but chips were not hot, kinda soggy, and didn't feel like traditional! Service: the lady who took my order and served me was friendly. Another part I didn't that you have to buy mushy peas and tartar sauce separately plus they were not freshly made! All in all I would never visit here again.

I was really looking forward to my fish and chips. The counter service was really nice. Fish unfortunately had a faint taste of ammonia, which Google tells me means it's old. That was a bummer.

Not often I write bad reviews but have to in this case to warn others not to make the mistake we did. Would strongly recommend not to buy the scampi, I should have asked for a refund really. £7.90 for 8 tiny bits of poor quality scampi which I suspect is from a mass produced frozen bag. See the photo, and judge yourself but I would recommend to give it a miss. If the chip shop sees this, I'd recommend stop ripping people off for poor quality products.

Ordered via deliveroo,item arrived 2 minutes later, completely wrong items. It takes longer to actually drive to the place than delivery took. Pretty sure they either rerouted a cancelled delivery or gave us food returned from elsewhere. Either way they refused to send out our actual order and told us to take up a complaint through deliveroo.Highly unprofessional considering the current climate. Won't touch the stuff they actually sent as we think it's someone else's.

From Australia - we just had to have fish and chips as part of our UK experience. Seeing some excellent trip advisor reviews we headed to the Merchant Chippie, We had the Haddock battered and crumbed - both excellent and super fresh as were the chips. Kids had chicken burger and Mac and cheese - no complaints - well done Merchant Chippie.

In Glasgow for five days over New Year staying in an Air BnB in the old Central Fire Station in Ingram Street. First night there decided not to cook and as The Merchant Chippie was two doors away decided on fish suppers.Place was busy, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Haddock in batter and chips with mushy peas was the order. Fish cooked to order and as there were four small tables there, I was able to sit and wait for my food. Staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. Got back to the apartment and the fish and chips were the best I can remember and I have been around for a long time. From beginning to end, the batter on the fish was light and crispy and the chips were just as good.On our last night here on first of January when most places are closed, to save cooking again, decided to try the haddock in breadcrumbs. Same result, if not better. The coating on the fish was crisp and crunchy to the last bite.It has in the past won the best fish and chips in Scotland. Now I understand why.Also it is considerably less expensive than where I live and much better.Well done Merchant Chippie.

We tried the Haddock, Cod and Sea Bass.Haddock was the most enjoyable to me and most traditional tasting fish of them all.Cod was nice, Sea Bass was even better.Chips were alright, but the fish was obviously the highlight.I found it unfortunate that they charged as much as they did for things like tomato sauce etc.Very clean facilities.Decent service.Price for all three serves was around 28 pounds.

This place is a great chippie. Fish and chips & spicy fish burger are awesome. The only drawbacks for me are 1) it is very small (4 tables only that can only serve two people at a time) 2) if you stay to eat there, your clothes will smell fried oil.

We were looking for a chippy near George Street and found online this chippy. Going by the reviews decided to go. Both had haddock and chips which was freshly cooked. Both of us agree that the fish was lovely and fresh. The batter wasn't greasy, chips crisp just right. Recommend this chippy to anybody wanting a fish supper. Also very rea sonably priced

This chippie used to be the best in Glasgow, now it is terrible. Greasy chips and thin fish in soggy batter! Ew. Totally gross. Half of it went into food recycling.

Not too expensive, you definitely get a lot. Came recommende by our tour guide and he was not wrong :) We tried haggis for the first time here and we definitely liked it. Not a lot of sitting room though.

Staff were lovely. Huge choice with some items I've never seen in a chippie before. Scallops or mackerel!! Very reasonably priced. A few tables inside and also a couple outside. Very handy for Merchant City area if you fancy a chippie.

This was a nice little find while walking near the University in the city center. I ordered two fish and chip meals and they were huge. Their chips were amazing. We were wondering why so many people were sitting outside eating chips. It is because they are so good and were named the Best Fish in Chips In Scotland.

Visited on a busy Saturday and it's very popular but I think more to do with position than actual food. The chips are bland and soft and the fish although freshly cooked was not nice . The staff are borderline rude also, all in all not great.

Walked past this place several times while walking about Glasgow. Finally was hungray and stopped in. Many locals and others here. Small, maybe 4 two top tables inside but hugh take away business. Some of the best fish and chips here. There was also many items on the menu we wanted to try but ran out of time. There was a charge for ketchup. Overall a landmark and must visit. Aldi's across the street. Would go back anytime in the area.

After a trip to the Glasgow Necropolis, Glasgow Cathedral, and St. Mungo's, we took a walk down High Street do visit the People's Palace and the Glasgow Green. Along the way we ran into Merchant Chippie and decided to stop in for lunch. A cute little restaurant (very limited seating inside, we enjoyed the nice weather and sat outside) on the street corner a very extensive menu and the food is relatively cheap. You can get just about anything here. The one common denominator for most menu items is that they are deep-fried. My one daughter got a whole chicken...deep-fried. My other daughter got a cheese pizza...deep fried. My son got lasagna...not deep-fried thankfully. The kids all really enjoyed their food which is quite the accomplishment. For me, I got a steak pie. Unfortunately, I found it a little dry. Maybe sitting under the heat lamps a little too long. But overall a fun place to stop especially if you are looking for a quick bite to fuel you for your site-seeing trek.

I have tried chip shops all over, and without a doubt this is the best chippie of the lot. Always fresh, piping hot, amazing chips with salt and vinegar, and the fish/sausage/pizza/fritters are outstanding. It’s now the only chippy I go to as no other comes close.

I’ve been in Glasgow near a year now as a Strath student from the states and luckily stumbled upon this chippie after getting lost one of my first days in the city. The staff are friendly, the service is quick and the food is amazing. Best fish supper I’ve ever had. Also brought my friends from home when they visited and they too say they’ve not had better. My highest recommendation, but there are very few seats so plan on takeaway!

Standard chippy, nothing that lived up to it's supposed reputation but it wasn't horrible. I do think the portions of chips could be bigger for what your paying for them though.

Came across this place by accident after a Celtic match and have to say the fish and chips were out of this world. The batter on the fish was so tasty and the fish just melted in your mouth, it must have been in the water that morning. Only snag is there are only a few tables but if you are lucky enough to get one, you're in for a treat

First time here. The service was quick but I didn't like the fact that you have to spend £10 to use your card. Regardless, my battered haddock was spectacular and the chips were succulent too. It was worth every penny. Their motto is true, this is the Best!

Visited on the night of the fireworks at Glasgow green. It was very busy but the staff were fast and efficient at making sure everyone was served quickly, all with a smile on their face. I ordered the haddock and chips and it was one of the best fish suppers I've had in a long time. I marked it down one point though as my husband ordered a portion of chips and it wasn't as generous a portion as we're used to in other chippies so he was a teeny bit disappointed. My girls enjoyed their rolls and chips.

We lunched at the Merchant Chippie. Deep fried food for a treat- two of us- had the haddock and Scotch pie. Very small quarters, we were fortunate to get a table. Smelled like fried food afterwards though.

After reading previous reviews thought I was in for a treat. Have to say the fish chips and peas were standard for me . The place was clean and tidy with maybe five tables. No complaints but nothing that wowed me either.

Visiting for the European Championships with the cycle road race going right past the window, we had the double privilege of enjoying some quick and easy food whilst watching the bikes go by on a wet and windy day. Merchant Chippie has won some awards and as overseas visitors it would be difficult for us to determine whether their Haddock & Chips were the very best, they certainly seemed great to us. We can say the service was efficient and excellent. There is limited room to dine inside (mainly take-away), and the cutlery is of the disappointing plastic variety when more eco-friendly wooden utensils would be more welcome these days. But a satisfactory quick meal and a warm shop for short while were more than welcome.

We went to Merchant Chippie following reviews read here and elsewhere. It was awarded a prize a few years back. It does not deserve such a reputation, nothing is outsatanding. The fish is good, weel cooked, the chips are not, neither good not properly cooked.

The best restaurant in Glasgow. Good prices, excellent quality! We came back 3 or 4 times in 4 days to this place.
