Melton's in York

This place is so good. Only a short walk from the city centre, lovely friendly staff and not a bit stuffy. All the food (and matching wines) were delicious, to the extent where it was impossible to decide which course was the best. We are still talking about it (and telling people) two months later.

The minute we walked in the door we knew it was going to be great. Very friendly staff. The food was awesome! Portion sizes perfect! We had the a la carte menu. Everything was cooked to perfection. The space between courses was judged just right. Not to short that you felt rushed and not too long that you were getting annoyed. The owner was lovely and all the staff were obviously happy and worked well as a team. We can’t recommend this restaurant more highly.

We enjoyed the tasting menu with accompanying wine flight. Every course was absolutely delicious with beautifully paired drinks! The sommelier was knowledgeable, service was very slick, and the atmosphere intimate. It was a wonderful meal, on par with some of the Michelin restaurants I have eaten in. WoW what an absolutely lovely way to spend a relaxed Thursday evening in York. This is a restaurant that has been on my culinary wish list for a very long time, tonight the wait was over. The restaurant had just the right ambience without being too busy, the food and service were both flawless, we couldn’t have asked for more. Having been very lucky over the years to have experienced some very fine dining kitchens, I would say Melton’s holds it own, without the clinical service some establishments offer. The welcome and service was excellent and the food from the tasting menu sublime, absolutely the best desert of rhubarb I have ever had! Superb! Thank you to the chefs and front of house for a fantastic meal, well worth the journey from Scotland just to eat here, thank you! We will definitely return when back in York.

The food and experience in Meltons was amazing. The wine paring was great and informative. We couldn’t choose a favourite course as they were all lovely. This our second vist and we will definitely be back!

This was our first visit to Melton’s restaurant but it certainly won’t be our last. From the moment we arrived we received a very warm and friendly welcome and as we were the only people there we had our choice of table. The restaurant filled up quickly though and there wasn’t an empty seat, which says a lot. We had opted for the tasting menu together with the wine flight. The food was absolutely delicious and very well presented with lots of elements to each dish. The staff were excellent at describing each course and were very knowledgeable about the dishes and the ingredients. The wines had been paired with each course and they were very good and complemented the food perfectly. We were not rushed at all through our courses and the whole evening was a lovely experience. The restaurant is not at all stuffy, it is just a perfect little place to treat yourself to some exceptional food and wine in a warm friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return.

We have enjoyed highly memorable meals here at least twice a year for the past few years. Excellent service from warm and knowledgeable staff. And the food is superb, every time. Cannot recommend Melton’s highly enough.

We had a small celebration in Melton's after our wedding last week. We were really satisfied and impressed with the service provided. We were served in the private function room upstairs. The communication was very clear and smooth since the beginning. We really appreciated Melton's effort to accommodate our guests dietary requirement with alternative options. Melton's placed name cards according to seating plan and that really touched our hearts because we didn't request this. We started at 1pm but Melton's did not rush through our courses although they usually close in the afternoon. The courses were served in timely manner and allowed us had time to chat with our guests. Apart from the great service, the food was impressive and delicious. I personally had been there twice before but was still amazed how tasteful they are. All of guests had the tasting menu and were blown away by the delicious food. The stars are the Amuse Bouche and the two options of mains (Salt Aged Beef and Skrei Cod). Two of our guests left with saying "it was one of the best meals in my life". Thank you, Melton's, for creating us beautiful memories.

Had the amazing tasting menu, such an incredible mix of flavours out together in a varied menu, ejoyed trying so many different things. All the dishes were beautifully presented and the staff were incredibly helpful.

Fantastic food and wine and very engaged service. We had the taster menu and ever course was a pleasure to eat. The suggested wine pairing worked perfectly.

This was our fourth visit to Meltons, my favourite restaurant in York. Brilliant cooking and the dishes are so light and delicious that even with the extra treats provided I didn’t feel too full at the end of the meal. I am intolerant to gluten, and the restaurant caters so well for this. Most of the dishes can be adapted so I never feel I’m missing out. Friendly, unpretentious with amazing food and wines.

We had dinner with friends last night 22/12 and we had the most outstanding meal. It was one of the best we’ve had in a very long time. The service was excellent too and we will be back in the new year!

Love this restaurant. We ate with friends last night and chose the 3 course menu which was outstanding and probably the best dinner out we’ve had this year. The service was also excellent and the atmosphere was buzzing with pre Christmas merriment. Well done Meltons, we will be back in 2024!

What a gem, just outside York centre. We enjoyed the taster menu and wine pairing. Our servers were passionate about both food and wine and we came away wanting to return ASAP. Well worth a visit.

Been here 4 times now over 18 months making a deliberate break on my way to and from Scotland. Not food just to eat but to appreciate. Some excellent wines (some expensive - over £100). All of us had the tasting menu, and we were honestly EXTREMELY impressed by the food!! Delicious flavours (with some Japanese influence…?) and ingredients, beautiful plating!! My guests had the lamb and fish mains and I had the vegetarian one, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the veg main. Excellent food for its price. Bravo!! Have been to multiple Michelin starred restaurants around the world, and we honestly feel that the quality of Melton’s food doesn’t lose out. We particularly enjoyed the amuse-bouche, the refreshing pea dish, the scallop, the mushroom broth (with cauliflower in it). However, if we could give some constructive criticism to the restaurant, it would be regarding the lighting and the provision of napkins. Firstly on lighting — we were sat at a rather dim table (right opposite the staircase down to the lower floor), and without an additional table lamp / candle it was truthfully quite difficult to fully appreciate the lovely colours, arrangement, presentation and overall plating of the food. Thus, we felt that this was quite a waste! Besides that, we thought that napkins could be provided after the amuse-bouche given that we had to use our hands to pick them up (this is usually the practice in Michelin starred restaurants). Lastly, just a small note to add, my guests and I felt that the tart of the last dessert course might be more enjoyable if it were a ‘lighter’ pastry! These points aside, the dining experience was divine. Hope more people will patronise Melton’s. Our compliments to the chef and team!

Stunning food of a standard you'll only find in the very best restaurants. This unassuming and unpretentious restaurant is an absolute gem that you'd walk right past without realising. I absolutely loved the tasting menu. Utterly brilliant and not overpriced either.

Just wonderful, we had the tasting menu which has to have been one of the best we have experienced. Pricewise it more than reasonable. Favourite course was the beef which was so tender and favoursome. Service was very attentive without being rushed or in your face. If in York make sure you go.
