McDermott's in Croydon

Consistently the best fish and chips in the UK! I travel the length of the country with fish and chips my first port of call to identify the best, and only 4 or 5 have been on a par with this establishment! Been going there for years and even the earlier branch in Croydon town centre! Keep on doing what you do well!

We went to McDermott sas we had not visited for a long time. It was a surprise to see some poor reviews but we decided to judge for ourselves. Pleased to say it was as good as ever. I assume all restaurants have their off days (so do customers). We have never been disappointed..

I'm not a great fan of fish and chips but this place is a cut above and the food is amazing. Takeaway is just as good.

Dissapointing behaviour from serving staff I witnessed awful behaviour form servers who sarcastticly spoke about elderley gentleman behind his back when they confirmed his order to him but not in the way that he placed his order woman in baseball cap and another one with glasses were so rude about him I found behavior discusting.I dont know who they think they are but need a lesson in customer service. So rude.

Sadly yet another disappointing experience. Have been eating delightful fish and chips for 20 years, but more than half rhe time lately the quality is poor. Not even slightly less than perfect, as sometimes would be the case. Poor. Bad enough to throw away. Why? Mainly the chips. I wonder of the lack of customers now reflects this? They are better when they are busy. The queues are dramatically less than than they used to be. I'll have to stop going there now.

We've been regular visitors to McDermotts for many years and have always enjoyed excellent food and service. Today's visit was special, as we had to request the gluten-free option for a family member who is Celiac. They thoroughly enjoyed the fish cooked in the G/F batter, and we all had a lovely meal (as usual). Thank you. Note: The G/F option is only available in the restaurant and has to be requested in advance.

Excellent top notch fish and chips. By far the best "Chippie" in Croydon... Batter on the fish is so crisp and fish succulent. Very generous portions too... Fantastic....

Food service was scheduled to finish at 2pm and we arrived at 1:30pm. The staff allowed us into the restaurant but our reception was frosty and we were made to feel most unwelcome. The waitress rushed us into ordering our food and gave us restricted options of cod or scampi. The food was very nice, as always but the waitress’s tone was terse throughout.

We go frequently to Croydon to see family and friends and always try to include fish and chips at McDermott’s. Light tasty batter, good portions and superb service. We need to have gluten free batter and that can be arranged if you phone them in advance.

I attended with my family on a Friday night about 8pm. The restaurant is stated to shut at 9pm. We ordered cod and chips which were nice admittedly but the portion was tiny. Much smaller than other fish and chip shops offer and was £15.50 each (even though £14.40 is what is stated on the website for the restaurant!). At about 8.20 we asked for more chips as we were still hungry having finished the tiny portion. We were told the kitchen had closed and there were no chips left. Perhaps that's why our portions were so small? Why do they shut the kitchen so early? We asked for icecream but was told the kitchen was shut even though we saw other people subsequently offered ice cream. It would have been nice to have been offered dessert before the 'kitchen was closed'. Then we came to pay. We hadn't expected to stop by on the way from seeing a family member so didn't have our wallets with us. no worry, we had our bank cards saved on Google wallet. At that point we were told they don't accept contact less payments - the first place I've encountered in 10 years that doesn't! we asked the waitress what we should done and she just kept saying sorry we don't accept that and suggesting we go to a cash machine (which obviously we couldnt do). we offered to do a bank transfer but was told that wasn't allowed. she said we could come back the next day to pay if we gave our details. we wrote all our personal details down but then she went to her manager and was told that wasn't allowed but a bank transfer was. all this time the babies were getting tired and upset. the way it was handled was ridiculous. they must have this problem regularly as we saw on the way out that there was a piece of paper advertising that they don't accept contact less but we clearly didn't see it on the way in and the waitress did not flag it. We won't be back there again.

I’ve been there before, the food is great. I went in to order a pretty large order of food only to be told they don’t take contactless payments. Virtually everywhere in the world takes contactless. I only had my phone so they wouldn’t accept my order. It was disappointing for me and I hope they think it was disappointing for them. Someone in this business needs to get with it. I got a curry instead, good luck to them, however a small amount of thought would have meant I was eating a McDermots instead.

This was recommended by a local and it was excellent. The fish was fresh and the serving was huge. The restaurant was clean and the service was good.

McDermott's is still the best in the South East as far as I'm concerned. I would always recommend it even if you're a 30 minute drive away as the service is so fast you don't have to wait long for your food. The staff are always pleasant and happy to take your order. They run the kitchen like a training camp for how to quickly deliver a perfectly cooked meal and in 15 years have never got my order wrong. It is expensive, but you have to pay for excellence.

Pre-covid my wife and I tried to book in McDermotts a few times, drawn by its exceptional local reputation, but always at the last minute and it was always fully booked. On two occasions recently we dropped in without booking and on each occasion there...

1st trying the highly recommended McDermotts & it was very good. The queue was very long but managed well with social distancing & someone outside taking your order so by the time you go in you just pay & have your food ready.Cod & chips was a good size and tasted good

The woman on the till is arrogant, patronising and just down right rude. If you want to queue for ever, pay extortionate money for average food and get abused and patronised into the bargain, then this is the place. That woman has no customer skills and frankly I don't even think a customer skills course would help. I can only think she owns the place as no employer in there right mind would keep someone like her to interface with paying customers.I certainly won't be spending my money here again. I would also mention they have no touch card machine? Unbelievable!

Never really understood the 5 star ratings about McDermotts, always been slightly disappointed every time I visit there, either for a sit down or takeaway, it's good but not that good, the chips are way too big and there's never enough crackling! very expensive for a sit down although they do come along and top up your plate with chips but only rightly so as the portions aren't that great in the first plaice! I will say it's always clean and the staff are friendly.

The Haddock isnt haddock its frozen cod. thats why the can serve so many customers in the takeaway on friday and saturday nights. they only defrost one piece of haddock a day. It was much nicer when tony ran the shop not the arrogant son who treats people like dirt. i have eaten here many times over the years but its gone down hill in recent times

I stopped by to get a takeaway of cod and and chips. They only allow two people inside at any one time but there is someone taking orders from everyone standing outside in the queue. Well organised as usual and lovely food.

The food here is amazing, but what really makes the place is the staff. Not only are they incredibly friendly, they run a well oiled machine, even in this pandemic to ensure social distancing. Always pleased to come here.

Fantastically organised in the current circumstances. Queue looked rather long but was so organised with safe distancing you were served with the most wonderful fish and chips in no time. Brilliant. Thank you for opening again. A bit of Friday night normality is back!

I popped in here after my friend told me that they have specials on at lunch time. I ordered to take away their cod bites special which came with chips and a soft drink for £4. I am not one for fizzy drinks and so the lady was kind enough to swap it for a choice of either gherkins, pickled onions or curry sauce. I chose the gherkins. The value is pretty incredible. I got 5 freshly battered pieces of fish with a very healthy potion of chips - on par with their normal chip portions. I was unable to finish all the chips but could not believe how fantastic this meal deal was and for such a small sum. I would highly recommend this takeaway and restaurant.

We visited with a family member from Germany as he was desperate for proper fish and chips!We were slightly upset by the harshness of the staff there and having to load one girl up with "everything we weren't using on the table" just so she didn't have to make a repeat trip!The food is nice but very priceyWe had two cod and chips a chicken and chips and a drink each (two beers and a water) and it came to over £50!!I was also upset to be told there was no baby changing in the restaurant!!??A place that claims to be 'family friendly' clearly isn't!!No solution was offered by the staff so I had to change my little one year old out in the cold car park in the back of the car!! I don't think we'll be coming back!

Visiting friends in London they suggested fish and chips from a place the other side of Croydon to them. A little bit skeptical that they would survive the trip home we set off and arrived at a very busy establishment. Order placed for three cod and two chips (warned by my host that the chip portions were large). In quick time hot fish and chips were ready and bagged up. We set off at a dash (within the law of course) and arrived home, unpacked our hot delights and tucked in. They were as fresh as when packed and oh my..... Delicious!Crispy batter on perfect white flakes of cod, with crispy tasty chips.A sheer delight!

Last few times, have been disappointed by the quality.The fish looks fresh, but the last lot was almost raw in places, the batter has gone from crispy to greasy and the chips half cooked.After years of being a loyal customer, it’s time to try elsewhere

Lovely fish and chips. We have eaten here several times. Sadly what lets it down is that on the last time we were there I was served an unsafe meal. I am coeliac and they either mixed up the two dishes or mine was seriously contaminated with gluten. I have never had such a bad coeliac reaction any other time so I suspect that I was given my husband’s meal and he was given mine. I will never, ever go again as it takes me a really long time to recover from. If you don’t have dietary requirements then definitely go as it’s beautiful fish and chips.

If you like quality Fish and Chips with waitress service in a relaxed and comfortable setting, look no further. The fish of various types is cooked to perfection and the chips and mushy or garden peas are an excellent complement.

Used this takeaway on loads of occasions, never let me down until tonight, the fish was all batter and not very nice fish. Perhaps Saturday night is the wrong night for fish and chips, see what happens when I try it on a Friday night.

Whenever we visit Croydon we always buy fish and chips at McDermott's. Its the best ever.... has won many awards. Great value for money. Has a few other fishes available, other than cod. If you wish you can sit in their dinning room (rather than take away) and be served by their friendly staff

We go to this restaurant most weeks and the service is always great, these staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming. The fish and chips are fantastic and it’s one of my favourite places to eat. I can’t get fish n chips from anywhere else as it’s never as nice as McDermotts! Their homemade tartare sauce is delicious, the gherkins tasty, beautiful white cod in light crispy batter. Chips are good, curry sauce is very nice too. My children always have the sausages which they absolutely love! Just feel very fortunate to live fairly close to this fantastic restaurant

Went there about a month ago, off the cuff cos we were passing. Heard lots of great verbal reviews so we popped in. They do take away but we decided to use the restaurant. Absolutely loved it. Service great, fish batter so light and fish so white. We had 2 cod and 2 chips but the option of 2 fish and 1 chips might have been better in retrospect. I also had a pot of tea. You get bread and mixed pickles which went down well. Food delivered promptly and was really very good. I had to mark them down a star because they took ages to bring our bill... but please don’t let that put you off. They obviously get lots of regulars which is always a good sign. Go for it. I expect I will be able to give them 5 stars next time.

Popped in last night on Tuesday April the 30th to see what all the rave reviews and the fuss was all about.

This is not a cheap place to get your fish and chips but it is the best in the area, as one can tell by the volume of business. The service for takeout is streamlined and although at busy times pone has to wait one can see that it is no long er than necessary to ensure freshly cooked and really hot food. The fish is good, the batter crisp, and the chips do not go limp on the way home! If you fancy fish and chips this is worth going out of your way for. There is a restaurant too if you don't fancy a takeout.

Best fish & chips in the area. Very worthwhile going there. Good quality; good service; but can be busy as they are so good. All the locals are in the 'know'.

We recently tried McDermotts takeaway fish & chips they are a bit expensive we had 2 pieces Cod and 1 portion of chips which cost £7.20p each portion of Cod and £2.10p per portion of chips total cost £16.50p not a cheap takeaway but it was very tasty fish and lovely chips it would be an occasional treat

The fish and chips here are so nice. The fish is battered to perfection and chips are just right. It is a little bit more expensive then other fish and chip shop but well worth the money.

Small portions abit on the pricey side. Although well worth it for the best fish/Chips in Cro. If your lucky, there’s parking available in front of the restaurant. They sell the lightest batter coated fish and unlike other places it’s not greasy.

Lived 5 mins from here for I don’t know how many years and only just come in. The food was absolutely lovely. Fresh, and tasty with good portion sizes. The service was friendly and I would definitely recommend.

The only bad thing that can be said about this place is the Queue, on a Friday/Saturday night it is often queued at the door, which can only emphasise how popular this place is. Fantastic food at low prices. I live quite a way from McDermott's and pass about 5 other fish and Chip restaurants before I arrive. Personally I think it's the best Fish and Chip Restaurant in Croydon.

McDermott’s has been an excellent and very popular fish and chip shop for many years now. The take away section is so well organised that even on a Friday evening with a queue out of the door you never have to wait more than 10 minutes before your freshly cooked order is with you and you are on your way! All the fish is top quality and they often have specials eg skate available. The adjacent restaurant is equally good and always busy but the car park can get congested especially at peak times so parking over the road is sometimes necessary but well worth it!

Always the best. Great service and the best fish you can get in Croydon. Good chips too. I have never been disappointed with the quality. It isn't the cheapest fish and chips locally but we'll worth the price.

We have been here many a time for both eat in and take -away and are never disappointed. The cod & chips are definitely the best I've eaten and I've tasted a lot from local to coastal! It is certainly worth the 15min drive to enjoy the delicious food & take-away is always pipping hot upon return home. The service is always good and efficient. Highly recommended if you want to eat wonderful fish & chips!

The restaurant has a public car park outside which appears to be no charge, busy upon arrival but fairly clear when leaving

Enjoyed a fantastic meal today served by the remarkable Jade. 4/5 stars. Close to perfect but left without the information I was looking for. Hope to hear back soon.....

I think the review title says it all. Sean Mc Dermott cares about his product, he doesn't have new staff every 5 minutes, they all know you and smile and welcome you as a regular. The food is best in class for fish and chips. I'm sure it will have times when its better than others, and staff probably have the odd bad day how you couldn't have this happen in 30 years of trading I don't know. Anyway my only advice is don't go on a Friday as the cue is very long. A note to Sean, I enjoyed reading your response to a 16 yr customer, it shows whats important to you. well done.

As usual we can’t miss our fish and chips outing to McDermott’s the absolutely best fish and chips restaurant in London. Great atmosphere, friendly attentive service with fresh flaky moist fish on the inside and light crisp batter on the outside.

This is the best fish and chips ever! Whether you eat in or take away it’s always lovely. The staff are extremely efficient as they need to be as it is always busy. They have an excellent system going in the takeaway part, especially Friday evenings. You never have to wait long despite the queue being long.

This fish and chip shop leaves a lot to be desired. The women behind the counter were too engrossed with talking about the predicted amount of customers, and when I eventually got “served” was asked what I wanted with an air of contempt. The same women works in the launderette and has an attitude problem. When my order was ready, it was barked at me as though I should be grateful. The portion of the chips leave a lot to be desired, along with no customer service as to whether I required salt/ and or vinegar. I feel I have a good judgement as my brother in law has a well established chip shop in Sw4. I shall not be visiting this place again, or recommending it to my friends. Management take note of the problems.

Regular here, and justifiably so. Best cod for miles around Upto humber fisheries standards Shame it's not open on Mondays as we always seem to feel like fish then, but wonder to they still not have landings on a Sunday ?

Have used McDermott,s for several years. The fish has never been in doubt. Chips are good, but would prefer them cooked in dripping, not really acceptable nowadays. Shame they had to get rid of their rewards cards.
