McChristies Restaurant in East Ayrshire

Went in to watch the rugby in the bar area and have dinner as a family as we have done numerous times before. We live close by and always enjoyed coming here. Not today!!!! Really angry at the way we were treated. We had already ate a portion of chips and had 2 drinks whilst deciding what we wanted for dinner. Suddenly the manageress appeared and told us we had to leave because we had a child. She said "this is not an appropriate place for a child with the rugby on and the pub will be full of men" (the pub had around 5-10 customers in at this point). I said surely that's our decision to look after our own child? But no, she continued to be rude and chuck us out saying its not for children here. We left and will never be back. What a sad experience this was for us and now our local pub is totally ruined!!!! Absolutely shocked as we have sat in the pub a number of times before even once stayed to watch live music in the evening with our child!!!!!! Raging and really not a nice place to go. Should be ashamed of yourself. Children are allowed in pubs until 8pm when eating so what is different here!!

Great food and friendly welcoming staff,it’s back to its best with food and service,couldn’t fault a thing on our visit

I had the peppered breast of chicken, it was absolutely delightful. My niece had the steak pie delicious. You need to give this restaurant a go. Beautiful Restaurant, thanks for a great lunch. I’ll be back soon.

Food is always good and decent portion size. Very disappointed as the last 3/4 times I have visited it has been freezing inside. Had to sit with my jacket on whilst eating dinner. Very disappointing. Will certainty not be rushing back in colder weather

Food and service good . Had a voucher for 60 pounds There was over 5 pounds left on Voucher but was disappointed we couldn’t leave it as a tip. As staff said they weren’t allowed to keep what was left on the voucher.

This is my 3rd time at McChristies and not disappointed. Food good and most of all it is hot and service is excellent. Family are now giving us gift vouchers for here as we can't praise this restaurant enough

Standards have gone down, surprised chef served the food. Chips were lots of crunchy empty shells, greasy. Lasagna dry and tasteless, cheese cake really not nice, lacked taste, suspect it was a cheap frozen cheesecake. Used to go often but won’t be returning in a hurry, other places better food more reasonably priced.

Booking for 9 elderly members of family. Mostly we all had a nice lunch however one person ordered the steak and it was too tough to eat. We did complain to be told ‘oh that’s a shame, sorry about that’! Others at the table had a try and it was too tough to eat! The table staff were very nice and friendly. Might be elsewhere next time! The fudge sundae was to die for.

I think you need to refresh your menu, my meal was not up to usual standard. Your menu has been the same since you opened, please change and add more variety.

I visited this venue at 2.00 Pm on the 5th April 2023 accompanied by 16 friends The staff were very friendly and the place is clean and bright. I expected to be kept waiting for my meal after ordering but was pleasantly surprised how quick we were served. The staff were very good visiting our tables regularly to see if we required anything. . We will return soon

Have been for dinner here before and have always been really impressed, but to say we were disappointed tonight was an understatement. First course paid £7 for a tempura starter. I had one proper piece of chicken, with three tiny pieces, which actually had more batter than chicken. I didn’t say anything at this point as I had ordered a pub classic style main which (should) almost certainly fill me up. My main came and although it wasn’t expensive (£12) it barely had 4 decent spoonfuls of macaroni in a tiny dish. I genuinely thought they had given me a child’s portion by mistake as my husbands meal (lasagna) which was almost identical in price came in a pot that was at least 4 times the size. My 3 year old wouldn’t have had any issue finishing what I was given and would still have room for dessert! Unfortunately when I queried this with staff I was told it was correct, and that a staff member had it for their lunch today and it filled them up so it must be enough! The staff member referenced was very slim (and unfortunately I’m not) so it felt like she was inadvertently making fun of my weight by dismissing my concerns and comparing me to others. Just to clarify I have never complained about the size of portions at any restaurant previously. The manager appeared very inexperienced and instead of rectifying a problem in what should have been a very simple way, instead made me feel personally attacked for not being satisfied by the tiny amount of food I was provided with. I have never in my life been to any restaurant, ordered two courses and left hungry but this was unfortunately my experience tonight, and the staff’s rudeness and uninterested attitude made the situation 100 times worse. Our bill came to just under £50 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks (I was driving so only a soft drink) and instead of enjoying a nice meal with my husband, I left feeling hungry and humiliated. Certainly won’t be back and will be telling others to go elsewhere too.

We used to eat here regularly when my folks were still alive as it was a favourite of my mum's. This was our first visit since its been renovated and it was just as good as I remember it. Food was very nice, good service and the wine was decent and very reasonably priced. We will return.

Went to McChristies to have a birthday celebration meal with my family. This was a return visit as we have been there before. We were not disappointed at both our reception or the fayre that was served up to us. Being a light eater and wishing two courses I chose from the wee menu and really enjoyed the pate and haddock. There was a small problem about not being able to get a kids meal and also getting a dogy bag but this issue was explained to a staff member and I am sure that it will have been sorted out. Would we return ? Most definitely !

Prices are shocking now for the quality of food. Food was nice with the exception of fish inedible due to so many bones it it) however even the price of one cup of tea ( which you get a small cup water and one tea bag. Why no pot? Service was great. Max was really friendly. However I’ll be in no rush to return. Not what it used to be unfortunately.

Visited McChristies with a group of 12 friends and without exception we were all freezing. We complained to Staff who said this had been reported to the owner who said that the heating couldn’t cope with the low temperature. I have never heard such nonsense in all of my life. Depending on the thermostat setting the boiler will fire to maintain that temperature irrespective of ambient temperature. The food was gorgeous and the service excellent but myself and the rest of my party won’t be returning as it was really uncomfortable due to the lack of heating.

Our favourite for Sunday lunch. Dinner last night with visiting family. Separate gluten free menu which is exceptional. Food and service really good.

Food was terrible. The creamy mushrooms were literally mushrooms in double cream. And lasagna was absolutely vile. The cheese sauce to what I'm assuming it was meant to be was rotten it was like scrambled eggs and the mince was none existent. The lasagna sauce was tomato puree for sure an God knows where the lasagna sheets were.

My partner and I dined here on Saturday 11/09/2021. I had the steak pie which was extremely tender and very tasty! My partner had the beef burger which he really enjoyed. Fordessert we had chocolate fudge cake and lemon meringue pie. Another two very well presented and lovely dishes. Well done to the talented chefs and the attentive staff who all worked very hard on such a busy night. Would definitely recommend McChristies without any hesitation!

Had lunch here today Very nice modern decor.toilets are lovely spotless in all areas, lovely staff welcoming and friendly .Food was lovely 12.95 .2 course. Very good choice on the menu .Portiion size good.all our food was delicious. There is a outside area too. We will return.

Was in last night the 17th August our food was tasty ..but.. the language coming from the kitchen was a disgrace both of us sitting having a quiet chat and the offensive language coming out from the kitchen put a real damper on our night. Attended recently for supper to find you have to have two courses, if you don't want both they will package up the starter to take home!. Made our order and soft drinks to be advised after receipt of the drinks that it was cash only and access to a cash machine was available across the road. Main course was fish and chips, the fish was overcooked and absolutely swimming in grease. Also no contact tracing was taken at any stage?. Very disappointed.

Came with my Dad for a Father's day lunch. Was easy to book online on the day and we were seated quickly on arrival.I started with haggis pakora and Dad had garlic mushrooms. Both were edible and tasted okay.For the main my Dad had lasagne. This seemed to have just been reheated in the microwave but my Dad ate half.I ordered what was described on the menu as " traditional roast, with all the trimmings " What actually arrived was 3 small slices of roast beef which looked like it had been overcooked by about 6 hours and then left I the fridge to dry out for a week or so. Under that was a couple of roast potatoes that had obviously came out of a packet frozen and simply heated in the oven. Dry and very unappetising. The Yorkshire pudding was frozen from a packet. As was the measly and dull looking vegetables. I asked for this to be taken back. I did not even taste it, it looked so bad. I then ordered steak pie and chips. Chips were hard and dry. Steak in the pie was drowning in watery gravy and had absolutely no taste. I ate one mouthful and sent that back also. At no point did the serving staff enquire why I has sent 2 meals back virtually untouched. I had been recommended this establishment by family members who had eaten there pre-COVID. They spoke highly of all the visits they had made there .The fact that a table was so readily available on a busy time like Father's day should have raised alarms but I went on previous reviews. After looking at these the most recent was 2 years ago.Terrible food and definitely will not only not return but will tell any of my friends in the local area to avoid it like the plague. The service and food was exceptional.I was so surprised by the quality of a small village restaurant. Prices absolutely on point. The food was presented well and tasted fabulous.The staff are very friendly, but not constantly asking you about your meal, which for me is an absurd bonus.So glad I found this gem and will definitely visit again and spread the word.All credit to the staff, especially in these difficult times.YOU ARE AWESOME

Never been before had the chicken tempura starter which was lovely followed by the chicken burger which was crispy and fresh no room left for dessert . My son had the same starter and fish and chips for mains which the portion was huge was presently suprised great service and food will be back soon

Such a lovely place and staff are so friendly and efficient! Must admit, my friend and I were both absolutely gutted that the black pudding starter has been taken off the menu. Please bring it back as it was our absolute favourite! Otherwise lovely experience.

Visited here on a Wednesday night. Staff friendly and seated quickly. Social distancing and masks worn. Good choice on menu and prices are reasonable for the portion sizes. Service could have been quicker but all in all it’s a great place for food.

Ordered soup and Chicken chilli wrap, arrived promptly, with fresh salad and coleslaw, all delicious and very nice coffee. Staff were lovely.Only one point, two people arrived after me got menu first and served first! Mmmm!! be careful of that as it was a little annoying.However I give you 5 stars and I will be back with an army of friends.

Went on Sunday 2nd of March at 5pm for dinner ,dinner was great but was disappointed that they had ran out of roast beef ,but it was explained to me that they had tried to get some from their other restaurant Hamilton’s in Irvine but I was just unlucky as they had a run on it as well,I did have steak pie though and our meals were lovely,service was great,only other niggle I had was that I had booked online and on there the price was £11.50 for 2 courses but when the bill came the price had changed but was still being advertised as £11.50 so you may want to change that, but it was still good value for money.

Lovely food,lovely staff and lovely surroundings.The burger was delicious and the chips were extremely tasty. My husband had sirloin steak which was delicious.Would definitely recommend.

Booked for Christmas dinner for my wife and I menu was very limited not the usual choice from this otherwise great restaurant my starter was chicken tempura a small portion I might add I opted for the roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings was disappointed with the turkey it was turkey roll not a lot of trimmings either don’t normally have a sweet no room normally but was still hungry from the two meagre first coursesThought I would try the sticky toffee pudding was handed a very small portion againWas the chef adopting a strick portion control in case he ran out only he knows will still be a customer at this restaurant but not for Christmas dinner £50 a head for this had a better turkey dinner at Morrison’s

Had a table booked and were seated quickly. The menu choices are good and prices are great. Biggest letdown is staff and service. They were quite young, called you mate when taking orders. They regularly forgot to bring your ordered drinks resulting in trips to the bar. They left you with menus for extended periods of time as they were too busy chatting at the bar. Just a horrible experience from start to finish. Only redeeming factor is the food.

We had dinner for 24 for a Christmas night out. The bar and restaurant are beautifully decorated. The staff were amazing, the food faultless and they even took music requests as we were the only guests left. Fabulous.

Excellent food, well varied menu and excellent staff.Been here on several occasions with groups and never has anyone in the group had to wait longer than anyone else in the group, something that’s unusual today! The staff are friendly and attentive and the bar well stocked at sensible prices.

5 of us visited here on a Wednesday night in mid November. Hadn't been for ages and was looking forward to it but was a wee bit disappointed. Service for pre meal drinks was a bit slow but that wasn't the worst. My mother in law ordered a 2nd can of Fanta. A fresh glass with orange and ice was offered but my mother in law doesn't take ice so was happy with her original glass but asked for the slice of orange. The waitress simply put her fingers into the new glass, took the orange out and handed it to my mother in law. She is a publican and a stickler for hygiene. Her face was a picture.Also, my father in law was drinking cider but, after the first pint, it was delivered in a lager glass. This led to the bar person giving him lager instead of cider for his third pint. He took a sip just to confirm it was lager before taking it back to the bar. The bar person immediately realised their mistake and gave him a cider. However, the aforementioned pint, less a sip, was taken from the bar by a waitress and given to another customer. My father in law couldn't believe what he'd just seen.As for the food, the black pudding was very popular but it was a little on the crispy side. Possibly a switch to Stornoway may solve this issue. The cajun chicken, burger and my sirloin steak were superb as was the cheeseboard (plenty of biscuits) and my mother in law loved the honeycomb sundae.It grates with me when a waitress asks "are yous finished?" Yous/ewes are female sheep but maybe it's just the Crosshouse/Ayrshire way.There are cobwebs hanging from the fire escape sign so perhaps a feather duster from Santa could be requested. I will definitely be back as the food is excellent but I hope the staff can up their game (and hygiene standards) in between times.

First time here , check out all reviews, I cannot add anything else I was excellent , meal , excellent staff could not do enough for you always on the move but never asked you mid month full if you were enjoying your meal, I hate that !! if you wanted anything they were there , a lovely place and I would definitely recommend it , They are very professional at what they do and that’s lacking in a lot of restaurants

We visited midweek and had made a reservation to ensure a table, my wife had visited before but this was the first visit for myself, but it will not be my last. When a restaurant is busy midweek, you know it's bound to be good. I was very pleased with the quality and presentation of our food, we both had the Chicken tempura with a sweet chilli dip for starters and really enjoyed it , freshly prepared and served piping hot . For our main courses I had the Oven baked steak pie with chips and vegetables, again outstanding , the meat just melted in your mouth.

Great value for money, well cooked and presented food and lovely staff, couldnt do enough for us. Good choice of dishes etc very busy place but never booked and have always managed to get a table. Thank you.

I have been to McChristies restaurant twice within the last month with different friends.

We recently visited for dinner and were given the Sunday menu. The menu was varied and had plenty options. We opted for chicken tempura and Brie to start followed by the chicken with peppercorn sauce and the traditional Sunday roast. The meal was lovely although I felt the beef on the Sunday roast was slightly dry. The staff were very helpful and friendly too. Overall a lovely dinner, we will definitely return.

We visited this restaurant a few weeks ago, excellent service and food, good portions the steak was cooked to perfection. The staff were very attentive and professional Barry and Corran were so nice took the time to pass the time of day with the customers. We had such a nice time we are returning this weekend. We visited McChristie’s for lunch today and were not disappointed. The menu was varied and gave us so much choice. The generous portions were delicious and very reasonably priced. The staff were very attentive and could not do enough for us - we will definitely be back soon.

Always been good in the past when we have used it,service was pretty quick.girl came with drinks and we ask for drinking straws girl never came back with them.she brought our dinners and spilled the chips but returned shortly afterward with new one’s.the lasagna was one of the poorest I’ve had with no tastes and was left.the salad with the chips was a better option on the side..staff being too loud and having more of a carry on than making sure there customers are happy with there meals puts you off having desserts..needs to be better as before

Delicious food at affordable prices. Lovely surroundings. Table service was first class, Barry was so efficient, welcoming and helpful. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a wonderful meal with real value for money.

Dropped in with no reservation early Friday lunchtime. Our first visit since their refurbishment, the decor is lovely and no more raised floor areas which suited my Mother who is less mobile these days.

The service was great , food lovely, reasonable in price, and the girls serving were pleasant and had smiles on there faces .......cosy atmosphere ! Will return ! Thanks guys

McChristies is without a doubt one of our favourite restaurants. The food is consistently good no matter what you order. The staff always so friendly and happy to help. Not to mention the incredibly cheap menu which definitely makes the food taste that little bit better!

took the family for lunch and sat inside this lovely eatery. quite busy with families and couples. We had the lasagne chips side salad and garlic bread with a side of coleslaw. A chicken wrap with garlic mayo side salad chips and a sweet chilli dip.and a childs portion of fish and chips.I can honestly say this is one of the nicest meals out I've had in a long time.

I was visiting from the States my family from town so 4 of us went to McChristies for lunch. I had the smoked haddock with cheese sauce, jacket potatoes & carrots. The portion was perfect & the meal was awesome! Our waitress was very nice also. I would say of all the restaurants I visited in Kilmarnock, McChristies by far the best! Can't wait to go back!

Visited Mcchristies for Sunday lunch and chose the traditional Sunday roast... What arrived was an admittedy generous portion of... Well aldente would be generous... vegetables... decorated by two very slim slices of roast beef draped limply over the small roasties.

The lights are sh1te bashed my head of them twice, got a headache. Food sh1te too. Never again. Please for the love of god if you don’t want your day ruined don’t go.

It's been a while since I had been but I remember it being better. The food was average and missing that home cooked touch from before.

It was very busy with Birthday parties . I had booked for me and my husband for 7 o'clock we were shown to our table and shown the menu two course were £15.50 but on web site it said £14.50 .I ordered fish and chips it was more like batter and chips ( I was not the only one the people on the next table said the same to the waitress ) my husband meal of lasagne was dry and we were charged 95 pence for one very small piece of garlic bread .the sweets were not to bad but not great .

First time visiting and it was really good. We entered through the door on the main street which leads straight into the bar so all the regulars pointed us in the right direction. Restaurant door is round the back at the car park but we didn't notice any signage. We booked a table for an early tea. The restaurant was full with a good atmosphere. The menu was good with classic pub food i.e fish and chips, lasagne. Food was tasty, service was quick and friendly.

Fruit starter was cut in to chunks 5 year old could serve better which was disgusting, had better from a burger van, Wasted £30. Go to Cochrane Inn, and compare the professional, quality and presentation

Visit never started off well. Straight in 10 minutes to get a soda water which turned out to be soda and lime. Gave them the benefit of the doubt.

This restaurant has been given a facelift. It was quite old fashioned before.. it looks modern and up to date now. I went on Sunday afternoon but hadn’t booked and they sat me at the booth across from the door.. the very one I pointed out to my friend that I didn’t want to sit at.. we spent quite a bit of our time up and down closing the door and a few times closing both doors. It kinda wasted our meal... the food was lovely but the seating position made it not my best experience..

We booked at table on Fri night for 10 of us after a family funeral , unfortunately my sister was unwell ( not a drinker might I add ) felt sick before we got her to the toilet she had a little sick on the toilet floor ( we have the girl £20 tip) as she cleaned it up , we then went to finish our meal £200 Bill then went to the bar to be told they would give us one more drink & that round be our last , endless to say we just walked out , they could have told us this before we ordered our meal, disgusting behaviour, we certainly will not be back to say we were very hurt & embarrassed is an understatement

Had an early dinner over the xmas period the place was packed with a few large tables 4 of us had a 3 course meal, even thought it was very busy it didn't slow service down between courses the chicken tempura starter was nice and the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was delicious, the only negative I had was the sirloin steak was overcooked and chewy and I'm not convinced it was fresh maybe quickly defrosted for service the rest of the main course was faultless, Would not order a steak again but would happily go back.

We visited McChristies as part of our celebration for my Aunt’s 90th birthday. We visited at Saturday lunchtime not realising that there was a special offer on then - 2 courses for £11.95. There were five of us and we all agreed that it was the best steak pie, salmon, lasagne that we’d had in a restaurant. My daughter had a black pudding, bacon and cheese starter which she raved about. She was visiting from London and said she had eaten in Michelin starred restaurants where the food has not been so good! Service friendly and impeccable. Can’t wait to go back on our next visit to Ayrshire. Very highly recommended.

Another visit with friends and you cannot fault the service. Starter great, however ordered the stark pie and was worse than the last visit. Steak was hard and chewy and the gravy was just coloured water with no flavour. Really need to learn how to cook steak and make gravy.

A busy restaurant with lovely soup - no parking outside but a car park round the corner. In a small village

First time visiting the restaurant since being revamped. The interior is stunning and the layout is so much better. Plenty of choice on the menu for dinner and the price was reasonable. The service from staff was friendly and helpful. The quality of food was brilliant. Will be back!

Went for lunch with friends ! Refurbished just few minor things to be done ! Good menu and veggie options too ! Friendly efficient service ! Food good and reasonably priced ! Decor updated and very chic ! Well worth a visit x

Went for dinner tonight with my mum. Food was ok. Steak pie was very disappointing. The gravy was coloured water with no flavour. Biggest shock was their 2 course meal has gone up from £10.50 to £14.50 on a Friday night but the portion size and flavour to the steak pie has gone down. 2 course not worth £14.50. There are nicer cheaper places around.

Lunch with workmates. Had a nice meal with a drink. Pleasant surroundings, good service even though there was a few of us. Reasonably priced, good choice of menu.

Ordered steak pie and gravy was like coloured water, no texture or flavour at all. A few pieces of steak which were tasteless. After a great starter, very disappointed with the main course. Chips overcooked. Been before and was very impressed. Maybe an off day in the kitchen.

This little place is a hidden tresure, food is first class, has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and your never rushed.

We were recomended this restaurant by friends, otherwise we would never have found it. The private car park is hidden behing the restaurant. Haven't been through Crosshouse, Springside, in years, always taking the by pass, but I was very impressed by the improvements to the houses on the roadside. Seem to be little bungalows for the elderly. Anyway it is a lovely restaurant, well furnished and pleasant staff. I ordered Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding, something I haven't had for a long time as I live abroad. The Yorkshire pudding was delicious but the beef wasn't as tender as it could have been, and I felt they could do with bigger plates, there was so much on it. However the dessert was really nice. Would definitely go back.

Visited with a friend recently. Delicious food and amazing service! Enjoyed some cocktails and would definitely come back again.

We visited here for the first time today on the recommendation of our son. The menu had plenty of choice. I had the chicken tempura and my husband had the crispy brie with red onion chutney (which he is still raving about), we both had the cajun chicken with madras sauce, chips and rice and then we both had tablet sundaes. The price of two three course meals plus two soft drinks came to under £30, which I thought excellent value as portions were good. We probably could have done without the puddings but had seen some getting served at another table, so we just had to try them too. For a Tuesday the place got quite busy, but service was prompt and we definitely would go back and will recommend it to friends.

We visited on the advice of a friend. Menu is good and “pub” food is excellent. Much better standard than expected. Really big portions of freshly cooked food. Attentive service and really good value for money

Had a great meal here for a family dinner, the staff were so friendly and helpful. Food is to die for and the portions are HUGE, couldn’t believe how cheap it was when I payed my bill! I’ll be back👍🏼
