We visited Nan's Thai and Malaysian Cafe (named differently on Trip Advisor for some reason) before a gig. We wanted something light, quick and delicious - Nan's did the trick! Situated opposite Hyde Park, Nan's is a small eat in cafe type establishment. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. The menu was excellent, varied and great value for money. We shared a mixed starter platter with fried wantons, prawn toast, chicken satay and some hefty veg spring rolls. All of them delicious and served hot with sweet chilli and a peanut sauce. We shared a lot of Jasmin tea to refresh the pallet. I had a chicken Gaeng Kiew Wan (green curry) with egg fried rice. It was delicious, fragrant, slightly spicy with some nicely booked veg. My dining partner had a really good pork Mee Wonton soup. Again, fragrant, tasty stock and soft slices of pork. We were in and out within 30 mins but could have easily stayed longer if we weren't in a rush. The mish mash cutlery and dishes added a really nice home feel about the place and if you wanted to they do corkage for bring your own booze too. Totally recommend this place if you're in the area and fancy something spicy on a budget.

This is my favourite place to eat. No fuss, no frills, just tasty fresh authentic food, served quickly and at a very reasonable price. Really can't fault it. It's great for a quick lunch, evening meal or takeaway. ' I can only echo the restaurant's comments out the previous reviewer being uneducated- they clearly didn't have a clue what they were ordering. The aged chicken leg they refer to is a fantastic dish called Nasi Lemak- one of my absolute favourites (it is Malaysian, not Thai, which it does clearly state on the menu) and is as good as I have had actually in Malaysia! May's/Nan's staff- keep doing what you do, I love it. Every single person I have taken here for food has been back and taken more people along. Says it all really

If the food wasn’t disappointing enough the people were even worse. Where do I start? My housemates and I were looking forward to a lovely Thai meal- as we so often enjoy and decided to try a new eatery. Big mistake. We ordered £40 worth of Thai food and were so excited. Food was ready in 15 minutes, we picked it up and began to plate up! A list of what was wrong with the food: Beef was barely cooked, curry sauce was watered down, satay chicken smelt of feet, coconut rice had no hint of coconut, soggy chips, the amount of chilli was enough to use in serval dishes and the worst meal was what appeared to be a 3 day old chicken leg served on a bed of microwaved rice and crispy anchovies. We were not happy. We rang up immediately and politely explained we were hugely disappointed, only to be told that they did not care for what we had to say, that we would not get a full refund, aggressive words with which we eventually bargained for an 80% refund and no apology. It doesn’t stop there. When we went back to get the refund we were told we were uneducated and to not order from their restaurant again if we did not know how to eat Thai food, we were told to F*CK off and were hurried out of the restaurant before we even had a chance to speak! We were also given old English money as the refund so had to go back a third time to get money we could actually use again. Never in my life have I been more embarrassed for an establishment, do not go here!!

This is a great little café if you’re in a hurry. The food came within 10 minutes of ordering. Having just come back from Thailand, I was after some authentic Thai food. It was ok, not amazing, and nothing like I’d had in Thailand. The Thai green curry was nice, although I found it rather strange to see cucumber in this dish. That being said, it was quite tasty. The rice was a bit disappointing, no jasmine rice on the menu so I went for boiled but it was rather dry. Spring rolls were nice. The Thai tea was very sweet, although I’ve never had it before so this may be nothing out of the ordinary. This café is by no means posh and could do with some colour, but it’s great for a quick meal and perfect for single travellers. It’s also right by the uni of Leeds. I would eat here again, certainly within the happy hour (meal and rice for £5).

My son, who is in uni digs close by, was keen to take us to this popular student eatery. The eating space has a mix of chairs, benches and cafeteria tables and felt rather strange - like eating in someone's kitchen - especially as when we arrived all the cafe workers were tucking into their evening meal round one of the tables. Most of our food was good - my wife was disappointed with her chow mein, but our mixed starters did the job and I enjoyed my king prawn stir fry with noodles which had fresh ingredients and nice flavours. Similarly my son was very satisfied with his red thai curry. Being excellent value it's not surprising this is a good place to eat.

This is a tiny little cafe which I pass everyday so decided to call in for tea one night when I couldn’t be bothered cooking. The menu is good and there’s a fair bit for vegetarians. I had satay mushrooms and tofu pad Thai - very tasty and filling and served very quickly. The only downsides are that customer service could do with polishing a bit and all the other diners were students which is not a bad thing but some of the conversations I couldn’t help but overhear because the place is so tiny weren’t necessarily what I needed to hear while I was eating.

Have had a cold for some time so went for the hottest thing on the menu I could find. May’s uses the chilli rating for their curries which inal ads find helpful. The curry was reasonably hot but I have had ‘worse’ but I was not disappointed. No alcohol for sale but you’re are quite welcome to bring your own. I would advise prebooking even for couples as tables are at a premium as it seems to be very popular with students especially in term time

What an awesome, awesome find; my wife booked this sight unseen as we were going on to a concert later in the evening. She looked at the venue, then searched for eateries around there and this gem was uncovered. We arrived and the cafe was fully of Uni Students, which is normally a great sign as students always search out good, great value food. The atmosphere was busy. This cafe is unlicensed, so you can bring your own alcoholic drinks (BYOB) if you wish, we didn’t know this at the time, so we ordered Jasmin tea, which was delicious. I’m Vegan, but my wife isn’t, nothing was too much trouble. I have a starter of deep fried Tofu, which was delicious; the best Tofu dish I have ever had. My wife didn’t have a starter, but for main meals we ordered Pad See Aew (53) with seafood and I ordered Khan Pad Kee Mao (63). These were both absolutely delicious. I (greedily) asked for a second portion of the spicy rice (yes, it was THAT good!) All this; drinks, one starter and three main courses for just over £23? I will definitely be back, this little cafe is an hours drive from where I live & I would drive back there again in a heartbeat.

It was time for me and a couple of guys from work to get a bite to eat having just had a long day we wanted something quick but not sacrificing taste. I mentioned I had got a take out from Mays a couple of weeks ago and was satisfied with what I had(pad Thai) and it was cooked in no time at all.A very charming Thai lady took our order of mixed sea food starter, a pad Thai , Thai curry and a roast chicken dish served with rice and a chicken broth. The lady recommended we try some of this Thai omelette as it complimented the thai curry dish. The seafood starter was excellent, surprisingly the deep fried battered crab sticks were particularly nice and something I have never tried before. Normally the portion would only be enough for two but the lady advised the kitchen to make extra for the three of us.We shared the main course dishes between us. The pad Thai which I had tried in the past was again excellent the veg was crunchy and just how I like it, the prawns were juicy and sweet and the noodles were bouncy. The Thai curry was rich in flavour and went nice with the omelette which balanced out the richness. The roast chicken dish was a dish I never tried before and I didn't see the point of the broth that came with it, both of the parts of the dish were nice separately bit didn't work well together. I could have had the broth as a soup type starter and would have been happy with it. The sauce that was coating the chicken was malty and sweet a flavour that I feel worked really well.No desserts for us as the menu was not appealing however on a plus side our meal was served with a big pot of jasmine tea that helped was down the food.Mays is not the best looking place but the food and service more than make up for that. I will defiantly be going back if it's to eat in or take out.

Ok first of all this is an informal restaurant so don't expect anything glitzy and glamorous. It is however cozy and clean and makes for a good atmosphere. The lunch deal is by the best I've seen for any Thai/Malay eatery at £5 for a rice main or £7 for certain starters and rice main 11am-5pm. The food style of the mains was homecooking with a good dose of spice. The starters were streetfood style and the balance of the two I thought worked really well. As far as I am aware it is still bring your own which is a big plus - there are off licences not far away in the car if you forget. Their glasses are great for a spirit & mixer so I might bring a little of bourbon next time if dining with friends. It was brilliant to have a brief read of the philosophy / Buddhist books laid out on the table whilst a short wait for the food. Nothing overbearing or imposing on you, merely a light read in tune with Thai culture that provided a few timely words of wisdom. The Thai Ice tea was fairly sweet but drinkable definitely worth a try, they also do cokes, fantas, water etc reasonably priced at £1. Order and pay at the counter the food and drinks are table service. The main reason for trying this place out was to sample Malay dishes which I've heard a similar to Thai but noticeably different. I was glad I settled my curiosity and will return to dabble in the other Malay dishes and maybe a dessert next time. They also do a takeaway service. Whilst we ate in if you can't finish your main just ask for a takeaway box as we did and put it in yourself. Really good things here, money well spent, good sized main portions, service friendly and efficient - there's not much to fault just enjoy your experience and give a reasonable tip.

May's is right around the corner from our flat. We've been wanting to try it for ages and the other night I was craving Thai food. We decided to go and were really pleased with the menu options and the pricing. It's inexpensive and the serving sizes are decent! We're strict vegetarians and there was plenty to choose from! We were greeted by a little girl, presumably the owner's daughter, and we're sat by the window on a bench seat with cute cushions. I ordered the Pad Se Aew and had to send it back (which I never do) because it was much too spicy for me and there wasn't any mention of chilli in the menu description. They didn't give me any trouble taking it back and didn't charge me for it. I felt bad for doing it! Before our mains we had the vegetarian starter tray and the golden bags - delicious! I basically made my meal out of that and iced Thai Kopi! Overall, I'd still recommend the place. It provided a wonderful atmosphere, was inexpensive and had a great veggie selection. Just be sure to ask for chilli free meals if you aren't into a lot of spice!

I've visited May's a handful of times now and every time the food and service has been excellent. I cannot understand how so many people within Hyde Park have not visited or heard of this place. As a student, the £5 main/£7 main + starter deals that are offered during lunchtimes are perfect. They're great value for money, whilst the portion sizes are slightly reduced compared to normal, this is not an issue because the normal portion sizes are huge! The menu boasts a lot of choice of Thai/Malaysian dishes including the most popular such as Thai Green Curry/Pad Thai - there will be something for everything. One of the best things is the ability to pick a dish and then pick which meat you'd like, the menu options are endless. The staff are really helpful and the service is quick and easy with a smile. Massive bonus is the BYOB which makes Mays perfect for dinner. The off-licence is a stone's throw away so you can always pop out and get more booze whilst eating. They've always let me box up leftovers free of charge too. Definitely will continue to eat here as the value for money cannot be beaten and the food tastes gorgeous.

Having lived half my life in Malaysia, something I always miss is the food. There are quite a lot of Thai restaurants around Leeds and the UK but very few Malaysian ones so when I found out about this place I just had to try it. It's a small cafe, right next to Hyde Park, that can seat around 20 people and we managed to get parking right outside. The cafe is modestly decorated and has a typical Malaysian cafe feel including an open view kitchen. The menu had a lot of Thai options and good selection of Malaysian ones too. We went for the £7 starter and main option. For mains I tried the Nasi Lemak, (which is arguably the national dish of Malaysia) and my wife had her favorite, Prawn Thai Green Curry. Both were absolutely fantastic. I even asked for more of the sambal belachan. We were both so satisfied that we even ordered more food as take-out for dinner. If you like Malaysian food we would definitely recommend you give it a try.

Apart from the Torrential Rain, Thunder and Lightning, took a mate here last night after he fancied a Thai dish for his tea, food was delicious as ever and I think he was impressed, I went foraging for beer and got soaked, never the less what a brilliantly run business, was happy to give them a tip, lovely little honest genuine beautiful place :P

I come here regularly for my lunch. The £5 or £7 deals on a lunch are really good value and great food! Try this place out, you can even take your own booze.

There is something strangely reassuring about the basic decor - the people who run this Malaysian cafe know how to cook East Asian food, not do interior design and so much the better for it. I think nearly all of the other customers were students, quite at home with its low key look (and undoubtedly happy with its BYOB drinks policy). The menu follows a conventional layout for this type of food: a few options for each of the rice, noodle, noodle soup and curry categories plus starters and sundries. We had the Pad See Aew and Curry Mee (the latter was superior). The food is unpretentious but tasty and you get all those lovely Asian flavours which make it taste as authentic as you'll get in Hyde Park. To sum up... it's cheap and cheerful, but it the nicest way possible.

Been here three times now. I ordered a duck masaman curry with rice last time. The duck was fresh and succulent not to mention delicious. If you ask, they will provide you with an accompanying sambal. I just wish they offered more Malay food, although dishes like nasi lemak and nasi goreng are good. It's a very casual place and you can bring your own bottle. I'll be back !

Came here with my mum for Friday lunch, we where the only customers to start off, more people arrived later. May welcomed Us and we sat down with the menu, they do a lunch time deal, £5 main or £7 starter and main. We were asked if we would like our starters and mains served separately or together, we opted to have them separately. The starters came after 10 minutes waiting, mums fish cakes were amazing and my fried dumplings were nice and crisp with a fantastic dipping sauce, made fresh every week by May. For mains we shared som tam, (papaya salad) this was delicious and reminded me of my recent trip to Thailand, we also shared pad kee Mao noodles which was equally as good. This place is a laid back, casual little cafe serving authentic food cooked by a friendly chatty Thai lady, they don't have an alcohol license but you can bring your own for a corkage of £1 each. I will be returning here again, Fantastic!

The food is amazingly fresh and flavoursome and the portions are generous. The ladies are total sweethearts even when drunken students play up. The prices they charge are an absolute steal, they've always deserved a generous tip!

We booked for a large group for a birthday end of January (10 of us). Having seen a fair few of the dishes that eve I can say that the positive reviews below about the food are all true - it certainly felt more authentic than other thai food I've seen before. It also has a good vegetarian range with most dishes having a tofu/extra veggies option (usually cheaper). Everyone enjoyed what they had and I had food envy for some of the dishes so will need to back to try them.I had to write this to say that the ladies running the restaurant and serving that night were brilliant though. Quick, helpful and friendly - they even helped us out with small plates and cutlery when a surprise birthday cake was brought by one of the group. It's a small place (about 30 or so seats?) so we were a bit louder than other groups due to our number, but were made to feel welcome. It's bring your own booze for £1 per head. The food is also really good value so I got a main dish and brought my own drinks and all this including tip still cost me under £8. Complete bargain! Lovely little place, was impressed with the service side too so will definitely be back

I've been supporting May's restaurant even before she moved to this current new location, they provide absolute delicacies at a very affordable rate, which is really helpful for a student like me. I would recommend their chicken rice, Nasi Lemak and their green bean puffs for those who have not been there, it is the best that you can find in Leeds ! May also provides really good customer service and sometimes I even get to choose to order dishes out of the menu upon special request ! She also supports charity causes such as the guide dogs, and agreed to set up a collaboration with the Guide Dogs Society in the university of Leeds, giving discounts to their members ! I would definitely recommend this place, in terms of their service and food quality, I would also say that this is a hidden gem that you need to try !

Lovely, lovely place. Run by traditional and friendly Thai women - the food cooked here is authentic, delicious and cheap. I eat here nearly every day. I mainly go for the curry's but i have eaten other things off the menu too and they have also been very nice. Take advantage of the lunch deal which runs until 5pm - a main with rice for £5. Yes! £5 for outstanding, personal food.

The food really is very good. It is well spiced and the ingredients and cooking style is authentic Thai. The Thai curry had great depth of flavour and the fishcakes had a great consistency. This is restaurant quality food at café prices with mains at £6 or £7. Nasi Goreng, Nasi Lemak, one stir fry and one soup are the only dishes describes as Malaysian on the menu. It would be great to see this side of the menu expanded, perhaps with beef rendang or canai roti. The surroundings are basic but it was good to see that the heating had been improved since it was Mamsys which I found rather drafty. The café is popular with students, including those from South East Asia. You can drink your own wine for a £1 corkage which makes the value even more outstanding.

I had the tom yum mixed sea food and and som tum with Jasmine rice.I've just returned from a holiday in Thailand and so had high expectations of the food and was not disapointed, Possibly the best tom yum I've had in Leeds and the som tum was fiery hot - just like being back in Thailand.Check it out - great new cafe
