Lovely pub, great selection of beers and cracking staff 👍👍 We came for the fortnightly quiz which is always good fun, and raises money for local charities.

We had pie and chips and whitebait and chips the wife's whitebait and chips were OK my pie was just taken out of the tinfoil and warmed up in a microwave hot on the outside and warm in the middle of rubbery pastry but chips were hot . Then the apple pie and custard again obviously warmed up in the microwave the pastry was like eating the bottom of my slipper and custard was cold . The tables were so sticky I had trouble lifting my elbows off of the table . Please wipe your feet on the way out .

Despite having family on the island this was the first time we had been to the Maypole. We came here with 3 elderly relatives (85+) who had booked a table for 5 people. We sat down at our table and it took a long while for us to have our order taken - which is fine. But after that it took another good 45 minutes before had our starters and another 45 for our main meals. The staff were apologetic but they said that there were two other tables who also ordered food at the same time, which was why it was taking longer. If it wasn’t for our elderly relatives, who were having trouble staying awake by the time they got their food, it wouldn’t have been an issue. I think perhaps the establishment could do with more kitchen staff - since meals for 3 tables shouldn’t have taken as long as it did. The food itself was perfectly pleasant but not so good that we will be returning in the near future, I’m afraid.

Arrived at opening time, greeted by a cosy open fire, staff & service could not be faulted. We had a group of 8 adults (5 different menu choices) and could not fault any of the food. The fish & chips was particularly good as was the burger, 3 of our group had the pie, mash & liqueur (ex londoners) and were all surprised at the quantity and quality, all said it was the best they have had in years. Could not fault anything on our visit, will happily return. Good luck to the new tenants, you deserve to have much success.

Needed a camper stopover with food. We were in for a treat. Parked the camper near the beer garden, very quiet. Fish and Chip supper, top nosh, chips served in a basket, not greasy at all, fresh, maybe frozen peas, lovely, fish covered by a really nice batter, crispy, not fatty or oily, fish cook very nice. Service very polite and helpful. Next trip to or from Portsmouth, we know where we are going to stopover. Thank you Julie 😊

Delightful pub - very welcoming and warm. We had never been here before but were hungry and cold and thought we would try it. We had our two dogs with us who also needed to be fed. The lady in charge was really helpful suggesting food suitable for the dogs at a very reasonable price and brought up in little cardboard trays for them. This meant that we were able to relax and eat our own food without having to rush. If only every pub was like this - friendly, homely and a perfect example of a great English pub - thank you. We look forward to returning soon.

We were drawn into the Maypole by the sign out front advertising Sophies Pie Mash and Liquor. We were a party of 4 and we all had a different main. Three had pie and one the mussels. There were about 20 mussels on the plate - hardly more than a starter portion anywhere else. The pies were OK. The deep filled pie was filled with good quality steak and kidney The traditional London mince pies were mostly mushy beef mince. The pastry was hard on the top. The mash was unseasoned and just that. Mashed potato. It was bitty and not creamy at all. The worst bit was to follow. We asked for liquor and 3 jugs of gravy. The liquor was gloopy and not appetising at all and were served up in small gravy boats. I asked for another as the two pies needed more. When the bill arrived we had been charged 2x £2 for the egg-cup sized amounts of 'extra' gravy. Outrageous! Needless to say we will not be returning.

We tried several places on Hayling to get a Sunday roast but everywhere was fully booked. Leaving Hayling we stumbled across the Maypole. We entered and were glad to be told they were serving food and as the place was very quiet we got a table. The first impression was a damp table cloth (odd in a pub)which made the menu and napkins wet. We were going to move but all the cloths were damp. We ordered and within a few minutes are lunch arrived which always a worrying sign. The roast: potatoes quite good, 2 slices of meat was a bit mean, the vegetables were ever frozen or just over cooked as very mushy. We ordered the optional pigs in blankets, nice bacon but the sausage was mushy with no substance. For £16 plus the extras this is up there price wise with some great roasts so sadly will not be returning. The final annoyance was a radio playing, who wants to listen to adverts while eating. This review is meant to be constructive criticism that will help the mangers tweak things for the positive of the business.

A really poor visit, which as an Islander disappoints me as I very much want this historic venue to succeed. We visited early on a Friday lunchtime to avoid any rush which worked as it was very quiet. We ordered 2 of Sophie's pies, one with mash and one with chips. Both arrived with mash and so we asked which was which so we knew which was wrong. Although the pies were different shapes the server did not know the difference between the pies. We took a chance and sent one back to replace the mash by chips. The dish came back within 2 minutes with overcooked chips barely warm, clearly not fresh. We both started our meals and both pies being very cool, not cold but certainly not hot. My mash was the same. When asked if everything ok we said no. Replacement meals were offered but declined as already we had sent 1 back. A refund of the food parts of our order were offered and accepted. A 3-5 days process to return was stated but after 11 days nothing has been received. This was a really disappointing experience.

The service was superb and great atmosphere in the pub! Surprised by some of the comments here and I had a total opposite experience. We left our camp site for the evening as we were a little bored of the restaurant food on site! The food unfortunately was sub-standard, and seemingly was not cooked fresh, but more like heated up food out of the freezer! Fish fingers for kids were hard, burger was small and no garnish, mussels sauce was gloopy and the mussels were small and again a small portion. The mussels consistency was not good. The staff were appalling. The older lady made no effort at all to be warm or friendly and she did not get our orders right. The younger girl was really indifferent and could not care less about if we were happy with our food or not. We had 3 kids with us and wanted to keep it all upbeat for them, so did not make a fuss but we probably should have! No gluten free option, no baby change anywhere so I had to change child on the floor in the toilets. The whole experience was just NOT good. We chose this restaurant because it has good reviews but we are unsure of how this can be?? Staff did not bother to come back to say that they did not have a gluten free option for one of the meals. Overall really disappointing experience and my mum who was paying the bill did not tip as she wanted to leave ASAP! This was last evening of holiday and it ruined it!!

A few things that need addressing, offer guest a menu when they are seated (we had to ask for one) then they were grubby, didn't think it right the table was being cleared while people were still eating at our table, long wait for food once ordered. Plus side, food was good, what we had, desserts are too expensive, my fudge cake & ice cream was in a tiny dish, although nice would have been better in a larger dish or plate. Staff were polite and friendly but again had to ask to order desserts, perhaps its just training that is needed. Would we go back YES.

Sadly a disappointing evening out compared to previous visits. Over done or very chewy meals. The game pie could have been cooked slowly in a slow cooker to make it edible.
