Pale lukewarm greasy chips, lukewarm over-battered fish not cooked from fresh.avoid it possible there are more chippies in the town to choose from

Visited for the first time on Saturday lunchtime as we were in Otley & needed lunch, it's a bit hidden away from the main shopping street but was well worth finding. From Weegman's butchers on the corner near the clock tower & market, follow the side street down a few hundred yards till you see a car park & the Maypole fisheries is on the left. The restaurant was set behind the takeaway & was a long, narrow room, there's a few steps so not wheelchair friendly but several clients negotiated the steps using a pusher while we were there, it was traditionally furnished & very clean. In fact everything about the Maypole was traditional but all the better for that ; piping hot food, well cooked with tasty white fish in a wonderful crispy batter, good chips, hot drink & bread & butter included in the price. My husband enjoyed his regular sized fish, I had the light bite & found it just the right size, we didn't have puddings but the light bite 2 course meal includes 1 if you wanted 1. The staff were very pleasant, efficient & friendly. A very enjoyable meal & we will definitely return on future visits to Otley, thank you Maypole for a lovely meal.

Went there last year after a family funeral, having really enjoyed the food and fantastic service .As I was back up north last weekend decided I would take my friend to sample the fish and chips and was still great, really enjoyed our meal, nice friendly service. Will definitely go back when up that way again.

Don’t bother, rude staff and below average fish and chips. Everything is overdone and dark brown. Staff so rude.

My husband called in for tea yesterday and the fish and chips were PERFECT. I am gluten free and it was the best gf batter I have tasted. Wish we lived nearer!

I visited on a Monday evening, the staff were not very friendly and felt unwelcome. He also overcharged me by £1.80. Not good as its the first time ive been. Won't be back again AVOID

This is definitely the best place to eat fish and chips in the town. Prices have rocketed up recently but this doesn't affect the quality and the service.

We pulled up across the road and realised the chippy had a massive queue noticed there was a restaurant, what could be better, somewhere nice to sit, hot tea and coffee, bread and butter plus friendly service. The gentleman running the restaurant was very busy looking after all the tables, he seemed a little flustered but remained friendly and committed to giving excellent service, we ordered a special Haddock and a regular both with chips, tea and coffee and all the extras to go with it, we had quite a wait for our food but I guess the Special haddock was cooked to order. The food was very good and we cleared the plates, refreshed and fed we were ready to get back on the road, a good place to stop when passing through Otley.

Lovely fish and chips, the fish cake was huge, good value for money. Plenty of chips. Didn't have to wait long and it was a Saturday even better.

Visited Maypole fisheries today after a 70 mile drive. Chose the Maypole as on our last visit the food etc was superb. As we approached the restaurant/shop the heavens opened and it bucketed down so seeing the restaurant is closed Mondays we weren't looking forward to eating outside in the rain. We ordered our food and the owner must have noticed ( or overheard our remarks ) our disappointment and asked if we wanted to eat in the restaurant. Although it was closed without any prompting off us he straight away offered to open it for us and let us have a table and order drinks etc as he said he didn't want us to have to eat outside in the rain. HOW FANTASTIC IS THAT??? We really did feel special and the friendliness was just out of the world....AS WAS THE FOOD. Cooked to perfection and served with a lovely smile from a lovely waitress who tended to our every need and was just smashing. I ordered a special fish only as I knew with the size of it I wouldn't be able to eat anything else. I was right - it filled me up and tasted great, cooked just as I like it to be. My partner had standard meal - fish, chips with mushy peas and was full to bursting when she finished eating. Couldn't manage a pudding afterwards - which is a pity as I'll bet they also were 1st class. So TOP MARKS IN ALL RESPECTS to the Maypole and staff and can recommend eating there 100%.

Excellent food and service but not enough space between tables given the Covid requirements. I had to move my chair to let someone sit at the table behind me.

We have been coming to the Maypole for 20 years, but not so often recently since having moved out of Otley. However a visit to the restaurant tonight has not left us disappointed, Lee and team know their stuff and the quality is as fantastic as ever. I can’t see how you could improve on these fish and chips, just the best. Rhubarb crumble was very appealing, but after a massive haddock special, unfortunately no room! Happy to see this place continue to do well and produce such a great food!

Despite the lockdown we have been able to order fish to put in our freezer. As regular customers of the 'Maypole' restaurant, we were really missing our visits but we ordered fish to be cooked, allowed to go cold and then be wrapped individually and ready for us to collect at a pre-arranged time. Payment was made by credit card over the 'phone. Thank you to the staff at the Maypole for the excellent service and we will look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Deceided on a whim to eat in the restaurant this rather than take away. The atmosphere was very friendly and efficient and the fish and chips excellent. Perfectly crispy batter with and succulent fresh fish. The chips were equally good and all edible (not something you get in most chip shops) The meal came with a complimentary mince pie but, alas, we were too full to eat it.

Maypole Fisheries is located near to the Maypole in Otley hence the name.We recently visited the Maypole Fisheries and we decided to have our lunch inside in the restaurant. The menu included starters,main course and desserts. We ordered the regular haddock fillet approx 150g with chips with a side order of mushy peas. Every main course included a slice of bread and we als had tea x 2. Afterwards we opted for a portion of the apple pie with ice cream and a portion of rhubarb crumble with ice cream.The fish and chips with mussy peas were excellent with a great taste. The desserts were home cooked and also full of flavour.We felt that these were the best fish and chips we have eaten.The service was friendly and polite. We did not have to wait long in between courses.Of course we will return again.

Booked as a retired couple and had a wonderful fish supper with dessert and tea for next to nothing. Cannot recommend too highly- the best

We have take away Haddock and chips from the Maypole every 2/3 weeks. The quality is always first class. Cooked in beef dripping which is the only way:)

Visitamos Otley todos los años para las carreras de bicicletas y cualquier visita no estaría completa sin una visita a "The Maypole". El personal es amable y eficiente, y el pescado (eglefino, solla y gambas) está tan fresco como siempre. Tenían, las fichas también son geniales. El viaje de ayer no fue la excepción. Se puede comer en los bancos afuera, o simplemente para llevar si lo desea, pero después de un largo viaje optamos por comer en el restaurante. Teníamos té tradicional y pan y mantequilla con nuestra comida. Nos presionaron para que comiéramos un pudín, pero como mi marido había optado por el "Especial" considerable, no le quedaba espacio. Hay opciones para niños, así como especiales de jubilados también. Para aquellos con poco apetito, también hay disponibles porciones de tamaño adecuado. También hay otras opciones si no quieres pescado, pero si te gusta el pescado y las papas fritas, este lugar familiar y familiar es para ti.

He estado viniendo aquí por años y dejará de venir por Otley. No estoy seguro si ha cambiado las manos o la freidora, pero la última vez que conseguimos algunas de las papas estaban demasiado cocinadas / secas y también la masa del pescado. Nos ha quitado la vuelta ahora. ¡Como el pescado y las patatas fritas ya no es una comida barata!

We ate here on 20th Feb at 6pm after a friend highly recommended the place. I did book and was glad that I had done so as nearly every table was full when we arrived. The dining room is well decorated and welcoming. The waitress who greeted us was very pleasant and we were seated promptly. The menu is very comprehensive and reasonably priced. I went for the special haddock with chips and peas whilst my wife chose a regular haddock on its own One of the great things about the Maypole is that they serve exactly what you want without the need to have chips etc. if you do not want them. The food arrived quickly and it was all well presented with the tea and bread and butter we asked for. The food was without fault, fat free, crispy batter, flaky tasty fleshy haddock and well cooled chips. I must agree that they are the best fish and chips I have ever had. It is a pity that the maximum TA rating is 5 as the Maypole deserves a straight 10 across the board.

Otley has a lot of good chippies but Maypole is definitely my favourite. Its never once been disappointing.

I visited this chippy specially while in Otley because of the high ratings. Fish, chips and scraps were all fine. They lost one star because the cook on demand fish and batter were slightly undercooked.

Lunchtime visit to Otley, forgot how good this Fish and Chip shop is. Fish and Chips in a box to eat out, brilliant, not a drop of fat left in the box when finished. Call in you must try you won’t be disappointed, I’m certainly going back.

My wife and I visit the Maypole regularly. It is consistently the best fish and chips. The haddock is always firm and meaty, the batter bubbly and crisp, and the food is always served fresh and hot. No matter where else we eat we always compare it to the Maypole, and get back there as soon as possible.

Only serve haddock but they do it well. Batter was crispy and well cooked. Mushy peas were thick and tasty. Super. Would definitely recommend

My wife and I made a quick visit to Otley on Tuesday { 26 June ) to take advantage of the glorious weather and visit one or two local pubs.Having read previous reviews about the Maypole we decided to give it a try at around lunch time.It was quiet when we arrived and we ordered two haddock to eat out.The young man who served us was very polite and the fish was gorgous after eating the fish I even went back to tell them how nice the fish tasted,On this evidence I would certainly recommend.Will call again when next in Otley.

Best fish and chips I’ve had in ages. So fresh and huge portions! Only thing I would say is that the sachets of ketchup are rather annoying when you’re sat in a restaurant and you have to keep trying to rip them open. Can’t you give a bottle of sauce if people are eating in?

Despite having around three Fish and Chip shops closer to me, I’ll always come here, they’re easily the best and most consistent in the area. The batter on the fish is always cooked well and crispy, and the fish itself always tastes fresh; no soggy fish nonsense here. It’s hard to define what’s good about the chips, but they’re great too.

Have stopped here to eat many times over the last 11 years when making the trip from our home in the Lakes back to our native Yorkshire.

Visited Otley again and because of past experiences eating at the Maypole we nipped in there just for a quick takeaway. Just couldn't believe how lovely the fish was. ( I'd have had a proper sit down meal but was in a rush - make a point of DEFINITELY eating in the restaurant on next visit. ) Cooked to utter perfection the batter tasted just wonderful and the haddock inside was plentiful, lovely and white and couldn't be faulted in any way. Just AMAZING how lovely it was. The service was polite and helpful despite the shop being full and a long queue and we didn't have to wait long to be served. Absolute TOP marks all round. Can recommend this place without fear of anyone being disappointed.

For the last couple of years we have been going to have a go at this place finally got the chance, quite a small place but very clean and good decor. Staff are smart and we'll trained attentive but not in your face one of the things that stood out was you got a proper fish knife something that you don't get at most places. We both had mushrooms as a starter and the standard fish, chips, mushy peas and mixed broadband butter food was pipping hot, they have a good menu starter's mains and puddings , we both enjoyed the food and will be calling again in the future looking forward to it.

Cosy little restaurant that can seat around 40 people at a time. The place is Yorkshire themed with pictures in the wall and the premises are very clean. Staff are down to earth and friendly, keeping an eye on your table without being intrusive. £8.20 for regular sized fish (on the large side) is decent value, when the fish is very fresh and cooked to perfection.

A normal chippy that serves good fresh food for a reasonable price. It has seating for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday and only take away on Mondays. The Restaurant menu has starters, large main course choice and various deserts. We've not sat down as we live locally but do usually go there for our take out. Very good.

Great food, fresh tasty and generous portions. Lovely friendly service. As good as Trawlers in Whitby, and that is high praise indeed. will be back when next in the area.

Just paid £6.00 for fish chips curry sauce and breadcake. Fish and chips a soggy mush of awfulness. Never buy from here again and I am still starving!

I reviewed in October after a great takeaway. Having been again several more times I feel the original review does not reflect the standard of food we have experienced since the first time. The fish for some reason is always really overcooked, maybe they hope to achieve a nice crispy batter, but this is to the detriment of the fish. Overcooked dry fish, I'm sorry to say that we got takeaway for my parents who were visiting us and love their fish and chips, but they did not enjoy it. The chips have also gone downhill and we get lots of burnt chips and 'ends' in our takeaway. Hopefully things will improve and we will try and go again maybe.

The restaurant is at the back and we were worried we wouldn't get in because the queue was out onto the street. This is a good sign though for any food outlet. The staff were very friendly and the food good and honest. Worth a visit.

I've eaten in several times, and had take-out even more times, and without fail they have served me great Fish & Chips. They are always fresh, hot and tasty. Non of this soggy batter or limp chips. Just good quality produce, well cooked and great value.

The Maypole consistently delivers great quality fish and chips and warm friendly service. They don't cut corners in any aspect of the business and that's why they continue to build their reputation as the best chippy for miles around.

My wife and I called in on Wednesday evening and enjoyed fish and chips in the restaurant. The food was superb however this was overshadowed by the 'outstanding' service and attention given us by the waitress 'Izzy'.She greeted us warmly and asked us to find a table we liked, she would attend to us as soon as possible. That she did! I can say that her attitude and level of attention was first class...Her personality and ability is a credit to the establishment. It is a shame we do not live near enough to visit to enjoy the food and service more often.

We love coming here and getting the small fish and chips for £4, service was quick efficient and friendly and we thought the fish and chips were good quality and excellent size portion for the price :)

Really friendly people, and most importantly delicious fish and chips. I really liked the variety of options including being able to have small haddock and half chips, also lightly battered fish. I left my gloves at the table and the owner even ran after me to give me my gloves back. So kind. Brilliant place.

Walking through the takeaway into the small restaurant at the back is like stepping back in time, but the fish and chips are always excellent. There are many good fish and chip restaurants in the surrounding area, but for me, Maypole is the best. Definitely worth giving it a try.

This is by far the best fish and chip shop and restaurant for me nearby. My mum goes every Friday with her friends. They do other foods than fish too! They have a very warm welcome for old and young. No dogs allowed but this is understandable as its a cute compact restaurant. Babies high chair provided but no changing room again understandable as its a small place. You won't be disappointed and they open at tea time too! Love it.

Fantastic take away service. I've never eaten in, but have sat outside with a takeaway on one of the picnic benches. You might have eaten fishcakes before but you have never eaten fishcakes like the homemade parsley cakes. Cooked to order they are the tastiest fishcakes you'll ever eat.

Went here last week on a referral of a friend, and I was not disappointed very nice fish and good sized chips, the peas were a great colour and even the bread was cut through the middle so my chips didn't fall out of the sides!Staff were friendly, service was prompt and courteous and at a cost that you will be pleased with, overall a great chippy and well worth the visit.

Great fish n chips, freshly cooked in beef dripping...chips to die for...very generous portions, friendly staff, plus a lovely little traditional fish n chip tea sort of restaurant upstairs.

You will gather dear readers we eat out on a regular basis and we love to have perfect meals. More so when my wife , due to illness had lost much of her appetite . Now much better we can venture forth and revisit some of our classic meals. The Maypole is a family run business with fish & chip shop at front and restaurant through the back. Spotlessly clean and cozy with a varied three course choice. My wife had breaded scampi and salad followed by ice cream. I had the special fish, but resisted the giant one this time. A perfect large fish with perfect chips and mushy peas. It's an art getting all three just right . Served with bread and butter and an ample pot of black coffee. The owner and family shared the honours with excellent service. We have , and will be back.

Visited a couple of times for a simple fish and chip takeaway. Friendly and hard working staff and always busy! A very popular local chip shop! Good sized portions for fantastic prices. However, I have on occasion suffered a bit of internal discomfort from the food.

Got takeaway from here. Reasonable price, well cooked fish, flaky crunchy batter, chips just how i like them - soft on inside, not too overdone. And no grit on the chips! Sorry but many Leeds/Otley f&c shops serve gritty chips so thank you Maypole for getting it right!

The trip adviser reviews are spot on, the fish and chips here are first class. For £9.40 I got haddock and chips with mushy peas, 3 slices of bread and a diet coke all served politely and efficiently by the lovely Jodie. The batter is to die for and the portions are generous. Enjoy.

Everytime I come here the fish is freshly cooked and light. Love the fact nothing is dripping in grease. Takeaway part is always busy but staff are quick and organised. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

I must say this place is fantastic..... We choose this place every time .. We had a evening takeaway for the family, we have visited the restaurant previously and that was also fantastic, the service was excellent, they always make you feel welcome, the quality and service is second to none, the fish is so fresh!!!! The value for money is amazing!!!! This place is an absolute gem - if ever your in Otley make this your only place for the most amazing fish and chips... Definitely worth a visit!!!!

I have visited this place to eat on an outing with children from a local pre school. We are in and were treated like royalty. Nothing was too much trouble and the kids had the most amazing time! Gorgeous generous portions. My favourite place in Otley for my family too.

Driven by good reviews we decided to make this our last outing on our current trip to Yorkshire. What a good choice. This is a friendly, warm and well run business.We had the haddock and are delighted to say that it was easily as good as the best we have ever eaten. My 'special' haddock was huge and very well cooked.The whole meal was terrific value and included bread and butter and a drink. Next time we come the Maypole will be our first and last choice in Otley. The town has several fish and chip shops and clearly the Maypole sets the highest of standards. Otley is a very lucky place.

A small restaurant with a friendly ambience and with friendly, smiling service. Excellent fish and chips and mushy peas. Prices very reasonable. No alcohol license but you can bring your own and no corkage which is a very generous policy. What was charming was that the waitress said thank you for the tip and was genuinely grateful where in so many other places it is just expected.If you are in Otley and like fish not to be missed.

we had lunch here, the haddock was beautiful and the chips cooked to perfection, the restaurant is a bit cramped but the food made up for that. Having had a fish and chip shop myself for 30 years I know good fish and chips when I have them and these were excellent.

On Monday 18th April I was showing a group of Norwegian Leeds United supporters around the great pubs of Otley.I know,it's a tough life.When hunger struck they demanded "the best fish and chips in town." Naturally I took them to Maypole Fisheries. Oh No,the restaurant part is shut on Mondays.The lads behind the counter phoned the owner,Lee,who came in and opened up just for us!! Superb service,Superb food.That's how to make people feel welcome.If you're visiting Otley,the famous pub town,you can't go wrong at the Maypole.

We arrived on Wednesday night to find a busy restaurant as we sat down to enjoy local fish and chips. The special fish and chips were very special. Exceptional large fresh fish with a good portion of home made chunky chips with the order of a 'Special'. The 'Regular' fish and chips was also good portion. We also ordered a pot of tea. Polite service which was prompt and professional. Good price for two £18.

Visited Maypole fisheries last week. We've been there countless times before and the fish & chips have always been first class - although more expensive than other fish & chip shops in the area. Fish & chips are no longer a cheap meal ( for the price of two fish you can have a good pub lunch ) so I was somewhat disappointed that one of the fish was over cooked with the fish welded onto the batter and not very nice at all. That really is the FIRST time I ever experianced a poor fish at the Maypole so they can been forgiven - although I'm sure they must've noticed this when they wrapped it up. It's a shame as usually the fish are lovely and chunky with a real Yorkshire tang that is heaven. It won't deterus from going again but it's worth checking your fish isn't overdone if you can. They're such lovely people there I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you asked for another one instead.

Very clean fish and chip shop, which for those who wish to sit and eat in comfort there is a small restaurant located at the back. The service is very good and the menu offers the diner a good choice of meals, and at an affordable price.

This chip shop has a small restaurant at the back, if you want to go in and sit and eat you can, it has nice fish and chips and is very busy on a Thursday tea time, you can order lightly battered fish if you want to order when going in the shop, staff are friendly

Wonderful fish 'n' chips, a great range of snacks and drinks and a lovely little restaurant make this still the best takeaway food outlet in the Wharfe Valley by far. Friendly and helpful staff, gleaming equipment and convenient opening hours just add to the package. Wonderful.

I have passed many times and today decided to have haddock and chips to takeaway the batter was soggy looked like it had been recooked a very small portion of chips that was only aired it's the first and last time I'll be visiting the maypole fisheries well over priced for size of portion

Visiting Otley again on Thursday. We 3 seniors called into the Maypole for lunch, had the seniors portions, just enough, Fish, chips, bread and butter, cup of tea, mushies extra price, everything cooked to perfection, and very enjoyable. Nice to see CONSISTENT Practice. Happy days.

Called in today for a birthday lunch. An excellent fish and chip shop with restaurant. I felt greedy and had the monster fish which ended up as two large fish not one big one. Saying that the meal was excellent all round. Service was good with a smile. Highly recommended.

Amazed that this establishment is currently only #18 out of 55 in Otley. The fish and chips here are simply the best in the World, there can be no argument. Sit in the back room eatery, great service, great food and the low cost will shock you. Super puds. What more can you ask for?

Having visited Otley the town I was born we visited and went to the Saturday market.the weather was ideal a though windy.feeling quiet hungry we went ti the maypole fisheries changed name since my day!! The return is small but very clean and tables cleared quickly.we opted for the 3 course meal deal which was good value.food well cooked and hot staff very attentive and pleasant.well worth a visit!

Have been before and will go again as the quality and service of this small restaurant takes some beating . The service is quick and friendly and the place is warm and clean.Portion size and taste were first class.

My wife and I had lunch to day at the Maypole Fish Restaurant and were more than satisfied both with quality of the food, service, cleanliness. Although the restaurant is on the small size it certainly lived up to the quote - small is beautiful! The Fish (Haddock Special) was some if not the best tasting fried fish we have tasted in the UK. We travel the world and have sampled Fish and Chips in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Europe and I would put the Maypole Fish and Chips in the top league with some of the Best Fish restaurants in these countries, i.e Watsons Fish Restaurant ,Sidney Harbour. We will certainly return. Well done to ALL

Walked into this teeny shopfront chippy and was surprised to see a nice room out the back with loads of seating. The quality of the fish was fantastic but the chips were a little pale for me.

Nothing fancy just quality fish and chips. Just what was needed on a cold January day. The medium size portion was ample for a hungry adult.

I had a fish and mushy peas as I didn't feel like chips. the fish was very tasty and the batter lovely and crisp.the service was very good and nothing was to much trouble

Second visit here i was dissapointed i tried steak pie and to be honest the pastry was thick in parts to the point that i pulled it off and didnt eat it now my fella had fish and he said it was tasty

Visited Otley today, 3 seniors. in our 70s, had a walk round and at 1pm decided to visit the Maypole fish and chip restaurant. Great decision, ordered the pensioners special, waited 10 mins and it arrived, haddock, chips, bread and butter, and mushy peas. The fish was cooked to perfection lovely batter, chips spot on, ate every one!!!.peas nice also, and everything hot, followed by nice cup of tea, great service throughout, with a smile, cannot ask for more, Well done MAYPOLE and thank you. Happy Days. are back.

Really nice quality Fish & Chips, good batter and fried in proper fat! They have a wide variety of food and can also cook your fish differently for you if you so wish.You can take your food away with you or have a proper sit down meal in a nice quaint little restaurant in the back, some interesting old pictures hanging on the walls too!Great service and decent prices.
