Marmion's Brasserie in Scottish Borders

This was a delightful find in Melrose. A charming chef/manager and his waitressing daughter clearly love what they do. The salmon was cooked to perfection with a truly amazing sauce. Lovely atmosphere with peaceful jazz music in the background. We left enchanted.

Went for lunch and had Cullen Skink which was delicious. A varied menu and reasonable prices. Would recommend.

Excellent homemaking and good coffee. And not being turfed out at 4.30 or 5pm !!

Good lunch of soup and filled panini after our walk. Excellent service, lovely calm surroundings. Could not want for more. Will definitely be back.

We enjoyed the food and staff are very pleasant. Spirit drink prices included the mixer which was good.

On our first day in Melrose, my parents and I visited Marmions Brasserie for a late lunch after our drive. The food was lovely, the staff very friendly and the service was great considering they were almost full and had a large party of hill walkers to serve and take payment from! I'd definitely recommend Marmions Brasserie to anyone looking for something to eat. We chose from the lunch menu with my Mum having a panini and my Dad and I having a toasted open sandwich but they sell main meals also and have a selection of alcohol drinks.

Great food and service, let down by shabby toilets . I think these have to be the worse toilet facilities I’ve encountered for a long while. Doesn’t reflect on excellent food and service, which is a shame.

Booked a table 19th Sept 23 via email for 2 for Monday 25th Sept 23 for our anniversary .....received a confirmation email on 19th Sept 23 saying all booked in looking forward to seeing you...from Chris.......turned up last night (25th Sept) to a sign saying private function. we went in and were turned away being told that the booking had not gone through.....Which was an out right lie......(Cannot stand liars)....I do think they knew about the function and could have emailed me sooner to cancel.......we were left looking for some where else to eat at the last moment........very poor service and very unprofessional behaviour.......very disappointed....

I have been going here for years. It's always a treat. Helpful, polite staff. Wonderful menu and great Borders Style ( large) portions. Always cosy and welcoming. Local art gallery on the walls very tempting all round. 💜

Cute place in idyllic Melrose town! Service good but not a lot of healthy options - but food we did have was delicious! Would visit again!

Our dinners were delicious and the service was quite good. Our only objection was that the background music was very loud and not conducive to dining.

Dropped by late in the afternoon, took a little something outside to the pavement table and sat watching the rush hour as places closed up. After all three of the cars had gone by and we'd chatted to a party who were ending their day of walking and splitting up we continued our journey. Helpful staff, delivery to the table, a ready wit and chaff. All that is required and not always found of such a place.

We had lunch here while watching Melrose Abby. We had a sandwich and it tasted really good and the staff was really on point.

Popped in for drink and then came back next day for breakfast. Full fry was great. Mrs had scrambled eggs with salmon and loved it. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Really good place

This is a little gem of a place. Friendly and helpful staff. Not as extensive a menu as some off the so-called 'up market' alternatives in Melrose. However, the food is very tasty, well prepared and presented with generous portions, and very reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit for a delicious evening meal.

We had lunch & dinner here today. Lovely staff. The food was really nice. Apologies to the chef for not finishing my tagliatelle but although it was very tasty there was just too much for me. My husband's lamb chops & accompanying vegetables were amazing. Great 80's background music too 😊

We had lunch and dinner here on the same day. The food was excellent on both occasions. Open sandwiches for lunch and tagliatelle and lamb chops for dinner. The lamb chops were exceptional. Good portion size and perfectly cooked. The tagliatelle was also excellent and as described on the menu. Creamy, garlicky and plenty of chicken. My wife didn't manage to finish her meal. However, it was nothing to do with the quality.

Everywhere else was closed and we were tired on our journey from Edinburgh to Durham. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was lovely. The food was heartwarming and tasted great! Excellent value for money. We would definitely recommend and we intend to visit again!

Very happy to find this bistro, the waitress was super friendly and sympathetic to vegan, vegetarian options. We had the Mediterranean stuffed aubergine and easily made it vegan by withholding tge cheese topping. It was a generous tasty dish .Many thanks

An absolutely fantastic evening in this lovely restaurant. Food was out of this world, best we have had in Melrose, service was great, make sure you visit when in Melrose. A little bit away from the hotels in the square but much better.

Was considering booking a table over the phone but as we were going past I thought I would do so in person. It seemed popular as we passed on Saturday lunchtime but when I looked at the dinner menu the prices were 20 -30% higher than the menu on their website. I decided to go elsewhere!

Had a lovely lunch here with my partner the food was delicious service was 1st class and very reasonably priced we'll definitely be bac when next in Melrose thank you.

We are regular customers for breakfast and dinner. Service is always really excellent. Breakfasts are lovely. At dinner time the starters are consistently delicious and I'd recommend the garlic mushrooms or black pudding salad. Main courses for dinner are variable. The chicken and haggis have been tasty in the past. Tonight we were surprised and disappointed to have 2 truly awful meals. Both meals were accompanied with what appeared to be undercooked frozen chips. My husband had a burger which he found too hard to bite or cut and totally inedible. He did tell the lovely waitess who informed the chef. The chefs response was that if it was less hard it wouldn't be cooked. I had a steak which was cooked to my liking but was unseasoned, completely tasteless, thin, fatty and quite unpleasant. I was too embarrassed to complain again, but this too was inedible. It was supposed to be sirloin, I'm not sure how sirloin can be cooked to make it so tasteless. It was expensive and felt like a complete waste of money If you're going, go for breakfast!

Lovely place to go ether for coffee, lunch and dinner

Last year we visited this restaurant primarily because it’s dog friendly although the food was what drew us back this year as it was so good, and dogs are still allowed! I had the lamb casserole which was so tender the meat just fell apart, the taste - just wow! This is the tastiest dish I’ve had in a restaurant for a very long while highly recommended. My husband’s pasta dish was rich and tasty too but the lamb Mmmmmm Good surroundings, the waitress was very welcoming, polite and friendly. Do not miss this gem if you visit Melrose

Popped in for breakfast, so nice we went back for an evening meal. Wife a a vegetarian thing, I had the chicken haggis and bacon with mustard mash. Delicious. Next time I'm in Melrose, I'll definitely call back.

Salad, salmon, sauces, all perfect!! Waitress — lovely and attentive. The meal was so tasty, we wondered if the desert would be equally good and we were not disappointed. Excellent sticky toffee pudding!

Food and Service were excellent. It is also dog friendly, inside. Which is great on a very hot day like today. They also brought over a bowl of water for our dog which is very thoughtful. First time we've been and whenever back in Melrose will definitely go again. Highly recommended

Stopped in gor lunch and had a fantastic meal. I had the steak and my mum chose the lamb casserole. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious. The only thing I would say, is their website menu hasn't been updated in a while I think, since it was more expensive that suggested online

A plentiful dish of simple food, served in a mix of Scottish and Turkish cuisine. Just what you need if making an overnight stop in Melrose. Zi recommend you try this venue for yourselves.

Quite nice except the veg moussaka, despite the top being dried up the potatoes were undercooked. Looked like reheated leftovers and despite sting so we were charged full price. Won't be back

Loved the young waitress but sadly food and drinks were truly awful Pate and soft oatcakes. Certainly not home made Burger just about edible Croquets. Trade description. Ham hock. Still looking for the ham. Basically potato Tagliatelle. Bland and tasteless. Smothered in an awful sauce....

Sadly I didn’t enjoy this food or drink experience. Nothing positive I can say other than the waitress was delightful Under whelmed by the food. Certainly won’t return

This was the only place in Melrose that fed us at 4pm on a Sunday! We ordered a chicken panini and soup for the day (cauliflower). Everything tasted great and the service was quick and warm. We enjoyed our little tuck.

I was expecting a Turkish menu due to the name of the restaurant. Bit disappointed to be offered fish and chips as a menu option. Only one vegetarian option so obviously went for that. Baked aubergine with veg which was nice but not mind-blowing. Initially went for roulade for dessert but it was frozen....told this was how it should be and should melt in my mouth! Not how I make it. Staff swapped it for a lemon tart which was scrummy.

I like Marmion’s, great place for a casual chat with friends or business colleagues, with good tea, coffee, snacks, light meals or a fuller menu. Frequented by locals and visitors alike. Pretty good value, nice people too!

Food was fantastic. Kind of a rustic vibe which I love. Service was spectacular and all round great value for money.

Stayed in Melrose in Feb and found this gem. Great breakfast roll so when we stayed again March it was a no brainer for lunch. Great service with a winning smile from our lovely waitress . Next time we’ll try the evening menu 👍

Nice but there's a little bit of a disconnect in the customer service. We came at 11:30 am and the menu says that you can choose between breakfast and lunch at that time. We were told that everyone at the table had to have breakfast or everyone had to have lunch. But only half wanted breakfast. Poor explanation refered to it being too hard for the cook. So why give it as a choice?

Gorgeous little cafe, incredibly welcoming - we were made to feel right at ease. Drinks and cakes were gorgeous and service was impeccable. True gem.

The food is exquisite and at excellent prices. I recommend 100% visiting this place. In addition, the friendly service and a permanent smile make the time one spends at Marmions Brasserie even more pleasant.

Probably not the best time to visit (Thursday evening, 6pm) as once the young lads from the rugby team left, we were the only ones in there until an elderly gentleman arrived. So no atmosphere, however the background music, soft jazz, was great. The young woman who served us was very friendly and very efficient. The menu was nicely varied. Wine was good. Starters were excellent. Main courses good, but my pan fried salmon was a bit overcooked, so not much taste and a little dry.

Service was good and friendly. Food was average. Steak was lovely, but lamb casserole was tasteless.

If you're not fussed about quality or fancy watching the hilariously self-important manager boss customers around like Basil Fawlty, this place might do you. If not, Melrose has far better to offer. For excellent cafe food and great coffee (Marmions' is burnt and watery), head to nearby Apples for Jam or, for a delicious restaurant or pub meal with charming, unfussy Scottish service, try Burts.

Our open sandwiches, one haggis and cheddar and one goats cheese and beetroot, were both excellent and served with homemade coleslaw.

The lamb was so yummy my husband kept stealing it off my plate. Great for a quick repose after visiting the abbey. Quick service, but maybe more friendly to the locals.
