Small - just one bar - but a great selection of ales and lagers, and much else besides. The food - mainly sharing plates - is tip-top, tasty and sensibly priced. Wonderful atmosphere, friendly owners, and a seating area outside for watching the world go by. Can't be faulted.

We went for a drink on Saturday afternoon as we have many times before. There are lots of gin selections & a wide variety of beers, which my husband & his friend enjoy. The barmaid was very accommodating by letting my hubby & his friend have a small sample of the beers they wanted to try before purchasing. She was very knowledgeable & recommended specific ones & the reasons behind her recommendations. Upon returning to the bar the male mos was at the bar, my husband asked him if they ever served a particular local ale & was met with a lot of foul language about the quality of the beer & abuse and foul language about the guy that brewed it. My husband was taken aback as it was quite a diatribe of abuse. The man was not very engaging with any customers, total opposite of the two women & didn’t smell very pleasant as my friend kept getting a whiff of him when he walked by. He was constantly getting up & wiping the sides of his mouth with blue roll but never washed his hands or sanitised afterwards, which in these Covid times was a bit concerning.

... in the worst sense. Nothing could be too little trouble and we were greeted as if we'd just crawled in from under a rock somewhere. No 'hello', just a barmaid facing away telling someone else to serve the two of us beofre she disappeared. A scruffy curmudgeon reluctantly shuffled up behind the bar and silently deigned to pull us two pints. How an orange-chocolate stout and a golden session ale manage to taste the same, I haven't a clue, but they did. The predominant flavour was 'water'. This was a Friday lunchtime and four other people were in the otherwise empty bar. "Can we order some food?" I asked. "Oh," came a wary, grunted response, the barman really not wanting to have anything to do with my wife and I, "Oh..."It'll take a while. We've got four lunches to do ." 'How long is a while then?" I asked. "Oh... twenty minutes, maybe more...." For a panini? He didn't even know what we wanted. This place is the encapsulation of everything that's wrong with Yorkshire* hospitality. Avoid like the plague. *I'm York born and bred and live here...

I messaged them on Facebook to see if there was anything interesting on tap. I also managed to reserve a table via Facebook, on a Friday. Not too busy when I got there and my table had been reserved. I had forgotten to bring cash. They do do card but the minimum spend is 5 pounds so she pointed me to a nearby cash machine. They'd run out of the beer I wanted on tap but they had 4 other beers to choose from. They do like to support breweries from Yorkshire which is nice. You should check in via the NHS app, she bought the QR code to my table ;-)

Coldish saturday afternoon in December. Every pub and bar in town was packed to overflowing, but this small pub, (micro pub really) sandwiched between two other pubs was quieter with spare seating. Started with a local brew, sat outside and conversed congenially with a local. Went inside for second drink. Fancied something different and asked if a wheat beer was available. The lady said no. A gent at the bar said they had Leffe if I wanted Belgian and pointed to a bottle on the shelf. Next to it I noticed a bottle of "Blue Moon". I suggested this was in a wheat beer, but she was adamant it was not - it was a "white" beer. I insisted and she inspected it and then agreed it was indeed wheat. She did apologise, but I was disappointed I had to tell her about her job. The beer was enjoyable. Did not eat, but looking at the blackboard I would say it was more light snacks than proper meals but prices looked ok.

If there's one bar I know I am going to visit on any trip to Doncaster I take its Marketplace Alehouse & Deli. This is a great looking bar,its not massive but it's good, great decor and furnishings including a cool looking serving bar and plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar despite its relatively small size and plenty of seating options outside looking out onto the busy and bustling market place. Our race club chose Doncaster for this years racing weekend and this bar was one of the first we visited. After a quick study of the beers on offer my brother and I both opted to have a pale ale each, these were served in excellent condition, we just chilled out and took in the great bar we were in. My pale ale was outstanding, a rich, malty, hoppy and well balanced pale ale bursting with taste, very easy to drink,a beer style both myself and my twin brother Stephen really enjoy. We really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time . The Marketplace Alehouse & Deli is easy to locate on Market Place . A great bar,if your in the area, well worth checking out.

On a very cold, wet day at the beginning of April, 4 of us were looking for somewhere to have a spot of lunch and to get out of the cold. We saw the Marketplace Alehouse and, decided on this lunch stop. After reading the reviews on TA, I am wondering if the people who served us were temporary staff, as our experience did not match the others. The older guy behind the bar was the most surly, miserable person we have ever had the pleasure to meet. We made our choice and the food took ages to appear and the person who served the food wasn't much better. The drayman from the brewery then made an appearance to deliver the beer casks, propping the door open. This was left open for 10 minutes, bearing in mind it was a freezing day and the place wasn't very warm to start (we had all left our coats on in any case). So, eventually we asked if they would mind closing the door "man behind bar" wasn't happy, but eventually did close the door. The food was nothing to write home about and we couldn't wait to get out. Would certainly not return after our experience, but like I say, maybe they were temporary staff?

Decided to try as we were both cold and hungry . There are tables inside and out but today was definitely an indoor day. We got a good seat and ordered drinks and food. The drinks were from a range of real ales and lagers and we plumped for a large sharing platter which came to a reasonable £14.20. The drinks were good and kept well and went really well with our mixed continental meats platter. The platter had plenty for the 2 of us and was very tasty. There were other platters to choose from and we will certainly return to try the others next time we visit Doncaster. Highly recommend 👍

Originally from Doncaster now live in Sheffield, visiting family so thought we'd try this place mainly because of its good reviews, in all honesty I can't see how it's got such a high rating, the drinks were good with a good selection, but the tables were rickety, floors dirty, toilet looked like it could do with a bottle of bleach, generally just looks a bit grotty.Food was acceptable but far from top notch, cheap baguettes, cheap cheese, just all abit basic and something anyone could put together with a quick trip to Morrisons,it's far from artisan produce(which is how it's described) and as for the tapas, not great. This place obviously does well because thank goodness for the owner it's got no real competition in the surrounding area We won't be returning anytime soon

This seems to be a new venture run by a younger management and though sited on the market is aimed squarely at the upper, bistro, hipster crowd. It appears to be a converted butchers shop or perhaps fishmongers but the interior has been transformed into a delightful quirky sort of place. wooden floors and shelving and a little craft beer corner where you can buy a takeaway beer. The menu is a mix of platters and homemade burger lunches, the platters are themed and good value. We opted for the Mediterranean and an English platters served on the wooden boards with bread and dipping oil. We had two excellent if expensive ales, a breakfast porter and a wonderfully hoppy IPA (together costing over £12 for two pints but worth it) and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Definitely worth a visit.

Good atmosphere but not quite cracked it as a venue for food. Went on Friday evening. Booked table for 12 people. Arrived and ordered food at counter in couples. Only 1st couple able to order from tapas menu on wall. All other orders were told no chicken, no pork, no mushrooms, no meatballs. Next 2 couples able to swop pork for sausages. But then sausages ran out. So only choice for remaining guests was cold grazing platters which was a disappointment when we had gone out for a hot meal. Food took almost 2 hours to be served. Platters are good value but not quite delicatessen ingredients. Just supermarket style meats, cheeses and olives. Not special enough to tempt me back.

Still a really good venue which is maturing with age. Always something interesting to drink at the bar. Didn't do food this time but plenty were eating and it looked good. Nice to sit outside when the weather allows. Really recommended. Its asking me to rate it as a restaurant, which it isn't!!

We spent a Friday evening here after a day at the races and thought it was a fab little bar/restaurant. They have a really good selection of cask, keg and bottled beers to suit all tastes, and nice wine by the glass. There is a good selection of food. We only had a couple of plates of tapas but they were both really tasty. Would definitely recommend this place.

Always interesting beers, always tasty food such as French/German/Italian boards and tapas. The staff are always friendly and know about beer. We love the fact that it is small and personal, unlike most pubs and cafes in Doncaster. It is becoming a regular haunt for us and our friends.

A "hole-in-the-wall" with minimal décor. Had the obligatory table of loud 20-somethings, but outside tables were quiet. Food was quick and good. Beers were great.

We were running late so went in for "just the one". Ended up having 4 pints and a meal! The beer was excellent. The food equally enjoyable. I would recommend it to any beer-drinking person with a hunger.

Lovely little bar, unique setting in Doncaster. Staff were a bit self absorbed though. No one to one service. Pity as this little place could be wonderful.

We have been waiting for something like this to happen to Doncaster. Great cask ales and good wine on offer. The platters are gorgeous. Fantastic value for money. There is a lot of passion goin on in that place, and it deserves to do well.

The Marketplace Alehouse and Deli is a great place which feels more like being in a bar in Amsterdam than a pub in Donny. The atmosphere is great, the music is loud enough to hear what's playing but not too loud to intrude on conversation. Another positive is there is NO TV, what a refreshing change to be able to socialise in great surroundings without football dominating everything. The menu is not extensive but I'm sure there is something for everyone. The food we ordered was great, came quickly and a refreshing change to the usual pub grub. There is a nice selection of draft beers and a huge choice of bottled beers , including LeChouffe :-)) Overall a great little place, I'm sure Donny (and other towns) would welcome more places like this.

Gets very busy early evening so you should book. An unexpected haven of good food and beer in an area not over-endowed with options.

Lovely people, great choice of beer and simple, but tasty food. Something a little bit different in Doncaster market place.Well worth a visit and supporting.Only thing I could criticise is they often aren't open when I'd like to go - we regularly turn up to find it closed without notice.

I'd been looking for somewhere near Doncaster UK where I could buy the full range of Sam Smith's bottled beers and a search revealed Marketplace Alehouse & Deli, Doncaster. It operates as a small pub and as a place to buy artisan and fine beers to take away. From the bar they serve beers on draft and bottled, and you can get something to eat from their deli. Customers can sit inside or, when weather permits, on their tables and chairs outside, where they can watch the busy Doncaster market, on market days. Since business began, the owners were telling me, the deli side had reduced to some very nice sandwiches and other food to eat in or take out. But my mission was focussed on the beer side: a whole wall of bottled beers, from the UK, mainland Europe and beyond, a speciality that had clearly become the focus of the business. Unfortunately their Sam Smith's beers had more or less sold out so I asked the guys to help me with some alternatives. And they certainly had lots of choice! The owners are very knowledgeable and were able to help me find some bottled beers that were close to the style I was looking for, including quite a few artisan beers I hadn't come across before.Their recommendations were spot-on and I will certainly be going back. Maybe next time I'll try the draft beer, if I'm not driving. So if you're near Doncaster and want some very special beers, beyond the often unpleasant, run-of-the-mill, mass-produced stuff found in many pub chains, do try Marketplace Alehouse & Deli. You won't be disappointed.

We decided to go here for some lunch after a busy morning shopping. Lots of people had recommended the food looked lovely in the past, and they were right! Quite simple, sandwiches, platters, but gorgeous. And the sandwiches were packed full and more than enough for lunch! We didn't try any of the beers but there looked to be a great selection. We will definitely be back soon!

went here this evening with my husband for our anniversary. Its only small so booking is advisable. Not the biggest menu in the world but the food is to die for!! not your usual pub grub and not a chip in sight. we had the 4 tapas on offer, chicken with bbq sauce on flatbread, souvlaki (pork kebab) jacket potato with cheese and spring onion and garlic and cream cheese stuffed mushrooms. all were very tasty. the board was empty!!! £13.95 for the two of us. not the biggest of portions, but enough for an evening where we were going to drink afterwards. the staff were lovely, very knowledgeable about the food and the vast array of beers on offer. the atmosphere was very pleasant, you could talk without shouting. will be back, ,might try to work out way around the sharing platters

Visited today as was in Donny and had read a few reviews on TA. It's only a small place, sandwiched between two bigger pubs and I admit I did walk past it! It does however have tons of personality and atmosphere. The guys who run it were very friendly and knowledgeable about the produce. I had a Mediterranean vegetarian "grazing platter" for one and it was lovely. My only criticism would be I would have liked to have had a bit more bread as half a pitta doesn't really cut it for me, and a bit more houmous and it would have been perfect. Two lovely (and I mean LOVELY) decaf lattes and it came to just under £13. Worth it, definitely and if I'm ever in the vicinity again, I'd definitely try this place again. Well worth a visit!!!

My husband and I visited for lunch on a busy Saturday after reading the great reviews about this place. As we like our space, the arrived late afternoon hoping for a lull however every table was full. We were prepared to wait a few minutes, however a small table became vacant and we settled with the menu. The place is very small, quirky and appealing to most. Reminiscent of a Bruges beer store, the back wall is filled with bottled beers from around the world, the opposite wall displaying items from the tapas menu and daily specials alongside the guest ales. Not a beer drinker myself, I found that wine was available so settled for a glass of Pinot whilst my husband went for a draught ale. The beer was good, the wine not so-quite rough and not a Pinot at all (more a weak Sauvignon) so next time I'll probably go for a bottled cider instead. The main reason for or visit was to try the food-something different to the mass produced, reheated pub food and Turkish/Italian food that is abundance in Doncaster we somehow managed to fit a small German and a large Mediterranean platter on our tiny round table. Both were very nice-ideal for picking at with a drink (if only my wine was more enjoyable!) and we left feeling satisfied and not over-full.If I were to give this place feedback, I'd commend the pleasant staff and innovative idea but also suggest the option to allow tables to reserved for those who wish to eat as it was very cramped for us at that tiny table, sat on low stools whilst the 'on it for the afternoon' drinkers who weren't eating sat in comfort at the larger tables. That said, this is clearly not an establishment for session drinkers for which I'm glad. Doncaster needs more places like this. Will we visit again? Gladly, but only if we can be seated at a proper table to eat.

Beside the Masons in the Market place.Geat little bar beers and nice deli. Lots real ales especially bottled. Bar staff a bit slow and need to multitask and engage customers more.Understand they are due to move to the old Polish/Queens hotel on the corner. Needs much bigger venue so this should be a good move.Masons next door is also great and has good bar and food.

We have called for lunch here 3 or 4 times now and really love it. The platters are well thought out, (Italian, Mediterranean, English etc) plenty of selections including a specials board (inc. tapas) which we haven't managed to get to try yet, as we love the platters so much! The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The rest room is very quaint - go have a look-see!Decor - rustic with wall to wall ales, lager, ciders etc from all over the world. Sample some on draft and buy some to take home by the bottle, or mini keg! Chutneys and choc drops to buy too!I think the owners have developed a wonderful oasis for a long overlooked niche market. Long may it continue. Well recommended.

This is my abditory. The place I come to seek refuge from the senseless world of pound shops, homogeneous chains and mediocre outlets. I'm not in the town much these days, but when I am I try to get here! The place is cosy and relaxed with a superb selection of ales and passionate, knowledgeable staff. There were also a good selection of gift sets on offer the last time I was in there. The food was fresh and tasty, even getting the thumbs up from my young daughter as we shared a platter and a few other bits.Their success is much deserved and long may it continue!
