I didn't manage to eat here but have to praise the extreme kindness of the staff. On a very rainy day, my father (who has dementia) had wandered off. They found him, took him in, dried him off and did everything to find his family. I am hugely grateful.

Took my daughter out for dinner for her 21st, It was a Tuesday night so quiet but lovely atmosphere. The menu is limited with choices but I don't mind that as it was clearly all fresh, so they have to make sure of turnover. My daughter is a celiac, which they catered for extremely well. Food was fantastic and the service was spot on. The only thing to be careful of is to look out for the emails to confirm your booking, I nearly didn't see mine so I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't replied. Will defiantly go back when next visiting Ipswich.

I had the cauliflower pakora starter which was bland and consisted of three small floret deep fried and some very bland indiscriminate sauce . My partner had the fish cake which was far better and had plenty of flavour and a nicely poached egg on top. For main I tried the beef carbonade which was a single beef rib in a nice heavy red wine gravy with a few chunks of carrot in it and half a plate of reasonable chips… the person who wrote the review under this one clearly has never been to a really decent restaurant. To say it’s the best dinner you will probably ever eat is hilarious!… it was ok and THATS it! My partner had the fish skewer which at £29 was really not that good… a couple of pieces of white fish and the same of salmon ,a couple of pieces of red onion and pepper along with literally a handful of chips. Oh and some salad leaves. Ok so you’re sat on a moored boat built in 1900… yes it’s nice but it’s not that special.. and to top it all it’s in Ipswich which has gone massively down hill these days. So with a bottle of Pinot Grigio which was fairly decent the bill came to just over £100 with my more than 10% gratuity I kindly added .. ( we didn’t bother with desserts)

Be very careful when booking with these guys. We booked by phone as the App wasn't working. Today we got two emails, the first saying we had one hour to pass on our credit card details or the booking would be cancelled. We were away from our phone at the time, the second email came stating that they had cancelled our booking because we hadn't given the card details. Taking that I had booked by phone they could have taken the card details then but instead they emailed the next day and then cancelled the booking. They also had our phone number but didn't bother

I’m sorry to say that we did not have a good dining experience. When I made the booking, I was told they would make a note on our booking that it was my fiancé’s birthday and that they would make it special. They did nothing to mark the occasion. We chose the festive menu and asian starter was bland at best and the plum jus lacked any flavour at all. With those ingredients, it should have been bursting with flavour. For our main course, we chose the beef brisket. Mine was like chewing old leather and my fiancé could not cut through his because it was sinewy, stringy and tough. It takes a lot for us to reject a plate of food but this was not edible. The waiter took it away and offered to get an alternative. We agreed to try the turkey but this was disappointing because we like to try different things when we eat out and hadn't travelled all that way for a turkey dinner. We then waited, and waited and just as we were on the point of walking out, the food arrived. Surely you should prioritise customers that are experiencing issues like this and get them their alternative food quickly, particularly given that the waitress had told us that it was nowhere near as busy that night as on the weekend, We also saw the lady on a neighbouring table sending her plate back too so we certainly weren’t the only unhappy customers. We finally had our main courses nearly an hour and a half after we arrived. Sadly, this attempt was also poor. There was a mix of slices of breast and brown meat. I am a lover of brown meat but this was tough and dry, and I could not cut it let alone eat it. Having a description of ‘all the trimmings’ obviously avoids a checklist but surely this should include the basics like roast potatoes and cranberry sauce in with the trimmings? Once again, the flavour was lacking with precious little gravy, which made the whole thing dismal and we just wanted to leave. It was the worst turkey dinner I have ever had. We explained the issues to the waiter and asked for the desserts to be packed up so we could take them with us. He didn’t seem to grasp how awful our ‘celebratory’ evening had been and duly presented us with a bill for the full amount of £111. We paid but honestly, some small gesture saying ’sorry about that so we’ve taken something off the bill in recognition of your disastrous evening’ might have helped a little.

We went to the Mariners for a 60th birthday meal where the top deck was hired out for the whole party. All staff were very attentive and the food was extremely good quality, with a great choice of beer, wines and spirits at the bar. On average mains cost between £20-40, so it's on the more expensive side, but the quality of food on offer certainly justifies the price. Would happily recommend visiting.

Went today for a Christmas meal, several of us had ordered the vegan Wellington which on the menu was served with ‘all the trimmings’. However, what it came with was three small pieces of sweet potato and some green beans. When we questioned this the staff did offer some sides, but none of these were vegan. Very disappointed and left hungry. My friend had the cheese board and this was nowhere near as good as usual.

One-of-a-kind location, but that's it. We were a large group so we had pre-booked pre-ordered and pre-paid. We ordered from the set menu, and were given a time slot. The service was so slow that the starter course took over an hour to arrive, and the main course arrived after we were supposed to vacate the table! The food arrived so late that one of our party had to leave for a commitment and abandon half her meal. The waiter had the gall to be sarcastic when she tracked him down the third time to ask where our food was! Then they confused the drinks orders, and confused the dessert orders, and wanted us to hurry up and finish ASAP because another party had booked the table! Finally, the bill arrived as we were finishing the dessert, and they had forgotten that we'd pre-paid so there was a £500 bill! I think they could see we were furious so they cancelled the £500 and comped us the drinks, but I sincerely cannot dis-recommend this restaurant enough. They coast on the draw of their location, but the food was mediocre, the service was dreadful, and they're so expensive they're not even worth going to for drinks.

Checking in to a hotel in an unfamiliar place, it is tempting to book one's first evening meal in the hotel's restaurant (unless, of course, one has had chance to research the alternatives beforehand). This may seem a safe option, but is often a mistake, as it was on my visit to Ipswich. Had I only known that a minute's walk along the quayside would have taken me to Mariners, I should have eaten there twice rather than only once! A floating restaurant can often prove to be a bit of a gimmick, but Mariners seemed to get good reviews so, on night two, I gave it a try. A beautifully restored and maintained Dutch customs gunboat from 1900, with gleaming brass and polished woodwork, the restaurant offers a limited, but well-constructed, menu to satisfy most tastes. Being aboard a boat, I opted for seafood, and was not disappointed. There being "an R in the month", mussels were a good choice for my starter, followed by a "seafood skewer", presented with just enough theatre to be amusing but not over the top. Not "fine dining", perhaps, but well-prepared, nicely presented and very satisfying dishes at reasonable prices. A limited wine list, perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but the Picpoul de Pinet proved to be an excellent accompaniment without over-stressing the credit card. Service struck just the right balance between politeness and friendliness. My fellow diners embraced the whole age spectrum (I was by far the oldest!) weighted perhaps towards the younger end, the common factor being that everyone (myself included) was clearly enjoying themself. There are many other dining venues along the Ipswich quayside that my brief visit did not allow me to try, but Mariners can be recommended as a safe and enjoyable bet.

Was really looking forward to having dinner here as my partner and I have always said that when we are next in Ipswich this is a must as it was his 70th birthday we decided to have a few days in Ipswich and of course made a reservation, however, it turned out to be a big disappointment although my starter was lovely it was the best part of the entire meal for me, my partner said his starter of sesame and soy glazed scallops was bland with no real taste, for my main course I chose the Jackfruit with bao bun the bao bun was inedible but the rest of the meal was ok, my partner had the Beef Wellington which he asked for medium rare came to the table rare and he said the dinner was very salty, we both had the Cognac ice cream for dessert which was ok. The restaurant was very busy and no one came to check if we were happy with our meal so we had to wait until the waitress came to collect the plates and when she asked if we had enjoyed the meal we told her of our disappointment with the food which she was very apologetic about, all in all it was a very disappointing birthday celebration meal

Waiter made a mistake - it happens. After 1 hour and 15 minutes we asked where our mains were. 15 minutes later I was ready to walk out but was persuaded to stay. Suspect any dessert would have come around breakfast time. I have no problem paying top dollar for a good experience but this was rubbish. Food was ok but the service destroyed the evening. I complained but nobody really cared. 2 stars a bit generous to be honest.

The service was very poor, a bottle of wine was corked (it was replaced however) and despite the owner telling my mother on her 81st birthday that she could have a Creme Brûlée desert, staff had no idea and told her she couldn’t. Then at the end, I requested some water and the waitress, sometime later, brought a bottle to the table behind us and not to us. The food itself was OK but really not deserving of the price tag. Overall a great night at mariners. We were well looked after and all needs were accommodated within a few minutes. We had to wait 1:45h for a table on Tuesday night as they were fully booked, however when we arrived the restaurant was already almost empty which caused the star drop in atmosphere. Food overall was very good. I had myself scallops as a starter which were presented great and seasoned just right. The only let down was the temperature of the dish, as I would like them to serve a bit more hot. They were served on cold plates and cold puree which dragged down the temperature of the dish quickly. As a main we both ordered Beef Wellington. The fondant potato was executed just perfectly, with great flavour, seasoning and creamy texture. Green beans were vibrant, fresh and cooked just right on al dente side. Jus was mediocre, lack of deep of flavour and felt like was helped to thicken with starches. Beef wellington itself was a great piece of meat with well cooked pastry, served exactly to the desired temperature, however it lacked seasoning during the searing process, also there wasn't much mushrooms (just little bit on the top) which combined with mediocre jus just felt more like unseasoned steak experience what took one star on food - however meat was great texture and flavour itself. For desserts we had creme brulee and cheeseboard with coffee. Timeless creme brulee had great flavour and sugar was caramelised just right, but texture was already slightly on scrambled side, what bring down overall dish to being good, not excellent. Cheese plate was a nice surprise, as selection of 4 cheeses presented well in room temperature with flavoursome relish and jelly on selection of crackers accompanied with celery sticks was just perfect. It was one of the best cheese plate which I had for a long time. Americano coffee has excellent crema on the top, served just hot enough, however coffee flavour was more on sour side what I personally liked, but for some coffee lovers it may be bit too much.

Fantastic. The food, the staff, the surroundings,. Not a large menu, but something for everyone. My wife is gluten free, and they had no trouble accommodating her. Thankyou for a very enjoyable evening.

One of my favourite places to eat. When people come to Ipswich and ask for restaurant recommendations this is where I suggest they go. I've never been disappointed by the food or service.

Superb dinner at this charming restaurant. The setting is particularly special - it’s an ancient boat with a fascinating history and is permanently moored in Ipswich harbour. It looks a bit tired from the outside but don’t be put off - you’ll have the warmest...

Had the lunch time set menu on valentines day. Service was excellent & food was great. For the price, excellent value & it's a fantastic venue.

We had a lovely meal at Mariners on a cold February evening. Despite it's age the boat come restaurant was warm and cosy. The menu was small and concise and everything we ate hit the spot. The grilled sardines and the pork belly were particular highlights.

Superb meal , unique rustic location and great service . I had the venison, perfectly cooked, and altogether for two starters, mains and a bottle of red wine the bill was £87. Great value

Lovely fine dining restaurant on a boat with great history and incredible service. We had a three-course meal which was delicious and great looking. They have a great selection of wines and whiskeys. The only downside was small portion sizes

Group of four for dinner, great atmosphere and setting, all staff where attentive with great knowledge of the menu & wines. I personally had a great satay chicken starter, which was delicious. The braised pork belly was beautiful, and I finished up with a cheese board, an amazing wine pairing of sancerre. Great place if you like quality food and superb service. Thank you, team Mariner's

After much research (and I'm super fussy), we decided on The Grazing Sheep to have brunch before my son's graduation ceremony last week. We received a warm and friendly welcome from the owner and the lovely man who served us. Our food was fresh, delicious, used high quality ingredients and the service was excellent. It was the perfect choice for us and we were not disappointed in any way - I have very high expectations too! Thank you to the owner and all the staff - the owner had a nice chat with us on our way out and made a point of congratulating my son on his graduation. It's the little things that make all the difference sometimes! Thank you to all at The Grazing Sheep - we would love to come again if we're in the area!
