Maria's Market Cafe in Southwark

Possibly the worst breakfast ever. £17 and had to ask for toast, for a cafe, that is appalling. The fried egg was hard, like a squashed hard boiled egg, look at the black pudding, a rich tea biscuit is thicker, the beans were dry and lukewarm. The sausage was barely cooked and lukewarm. An absolute shocker.

We ordered: vegetarian English breakfast, was good salmon and scrambled egg, was ok and fish & chips which was very bad and not cooked from inside the service is terrible

This place is not what it was…. Overcharged for my order…. Queried it and was told that was correct… she was so pushy I don’t get a chance to check…. Well that made £9.90 for 2 cuppachinos, sever refused to provide a receipt.

Bon emplacement mais nourriture pas à notre goût (steak durs, coquille dans oeuf au plat...), idem pour la table voisine (soupe...). ils vous servent à table mais pas de couverts, pas de serviettes... à vous de vous déplacer. C'est dommage.

I’ve eaten breakfast here 3 times now and won’t go again. Staff are great, breakfast items are average. Breakfast bap today, bacon fat not crispy just fatty and couldn’t bite through the sausage without removing the skin off the sausages. It also includes a handful of cold grated cheese which is bizarre on an English breakfast bap.

My grandson had the Borough burger which cost £15 with chips . For this price it was not a good quality burger , looked like a standard frozen burger, which is not worth the money. Also for a cafe a 10% service charge is not good ,although they did refund it when I questioned it. I have used this place in the past and never had any issues but it seems to have changed

Old school "greasy spoon" style british cafe serving traditional cafe food. Had the full English with which was OK overall but the thinnest sliver of black pudding I've ever seen. Sausage was good. My wife had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon but the eggs were pretty overcooked. The tea was as weak as it gets, with milk already in (a pet peeve, but standard for an old school caff I suppose). Overall, I think it's overpriced for what it is and relying on where it is for tourist trade, so don't have to try too hard. Bit more effort and it could be so much better.

Used to love this place, specifically the bacon, egg and mushroom bubble in a bap for £6.50. Went today, totally different with smaller portions for way higher cost. Didn’t stay, such a disappointment.

Took Dee (Angels Rally Monkey) to Borough Market. Needed a sit down and a drink. Stumbled across Maria’s Market cafe. Staff were so friendly as I just wanted chips and tea. A great place to just sit and soak up the market atmosphere.

I stopped in here on my lunch break after a very wet morning at work and the very lovely Laura was quick to serve me. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced, not only this she made sure I got the warmest seat in the house, underneath the patio heater. Laura even took the time to chat with me before my food arrived, which wasn’t long. This place is a real gem and Laura is an absolute asset to the place. I will be back next time I’m working here!

One of the worst fry ups I had, they ate surviving on reputation and location. Rude staff, no knifes, cold food. Extremely over priced.

We had a extremely disappointing experience at this spot. Unlike other places with long queues, there were still empty tables and we could have a seat right away. We all ordered Borough Burgers. After long waiting, given the number of chefs in the kitchen, the Burgers we received was a huge let down. The bread was cold and dry (not the brioche bun) and the beef patty was tasteless and not hot. The cheddar cheese was unmelted, very cold and carelessly THROWN. There was 1 tiny ridiculous piece of tomato in the center, no onions and no salad in 2 burgers out of 4 at our table. The table and ketchup squeezer was very dirty. The service was far from welcoming. No reason to return.

Got fish and chips (£17.50), and were delicious, super abundant and fresh. One of the bests in town so far, having tried the ones from the Ned (+£25), Maria’s version has nothing to envy them. It has tables to sit and all the comfort you can get from a market food. I recommend 👌🏽

Should taste better for the amount charged. Also vegetarian breakfast option costs the same as the regular one, but comes with less items.

Wir waren zu dritt vor Ort, meine beiden Kinder und ich, haben bestellt, ich habe nicht auf den Betrag geachtet, Beziehungsweise dachte ich, das wird schon stimmen mit Getränken … der dann direkt von der Kreditkarte abgezogen wurde, wir haben vier(!) Menüs bekommen, die ich aber auf keinen Fall bestellt habe, Sondern lediglich drei. Das vierte wurde nicht zurückgenommen, wir hatten schon am Tisch überlegt, es zu verschenken, natürlich wurde es auch berechnet, ich hatte auch das Gefühl, dass sie Sich über uns amüsiert haben, und die Bedienung am Tisch war unverschämt, dass das nicht zu ändern sei. Wir hätten gerne die zusätzliche riesige Portion auch noch gegessen, aber das Essen war nicht wirklich lecker , fettige halbgare Pommes frites, , Hamburger waren fettig, Und mein großer Sohn, der immer alles brav aufisst, konnte es nur halb essen und mein Fisch war eine Katastrophe, Irgendwie eine kalte, alte fettige Kruste, und der Fisch da drin sehr sehr klein, sehr, sehr schade so viel Geld ausgegeben zu haben am falschen Stand, weil der gesamte Markt ist so so schön .. Da findet sich sicher ein viel, viel besseres Essen, mit netterem Personal, Dass die Touristen mich auch noch finanziell ausnutzt There were three of us there, my two children and I, we ordered, I didn't pay attention to the amount, or rather I thought it would be okay with drinks... which was then deducted directly from the credit card, we have four (!) Received menus, which I definitely didn't order, but only three. The fourth one wasn't taken back, we had already thought about giving it away at the table, of course it was also charged, I also had the feeling that they were having fun with us, and the service at the table was rude about not changing that be. We would have liked to eat the additional huge portion, but the food wasn't really tasty, greasy, half-cooked French fries, hamburgers were greasy, and my older son, who always eats everything well, could only eat half of it and my fish was one Catastrophe, somehow a cold, old greasy crust, and the fish in there is very, very small, it's a great shame to have spent so much money on the wrong stall, because the entire market is so, so beautiful.. There's definitely a lot there, much better food, with nicer staff, that the tourists also took advantage of me financially

A really nice cafe in the middle of Borough Market. Had The English and it did not disappoint. Double bacon, egg, double sausage, bubble & squeak, beans, mushrooms and black podding. Come early and don’t be fooled by google saying the market is not opened until 10am. This cafe is open early. Would defo come back for breakfast. 😎

I like the revamp , first time back since the ownership change. Nice chat with Ruby ( forgiven for being a Millwall fan!) Still has a market cafe vibe, run by locals … nice and friendly service . Hotdogs were excellent… understand corn beef sandwiches are on the menu soon ! 😉

unfortunately, I can’t say I will ever come again or recommend this to anyone. I ordered at 2 PM and it took over 30 minutes for my food to come. They must have forgotten the order or something, I watched people who ordered after me get their food. quite disappointed in the fish. It was a rather large piece however, there was simply very little flavor. Also, cutting into the middle I found gooey bits, a bit unsettling. also, they supply two small packets of tartar sauce. They don’t even make their own? place was fine and the staff was nice but that’s not why you go to a restaurant.

Amazing full English, absolutely delicious! The servers are nice, and it's right in the middle of the market. It was my first time trying a full English, and it did not disappoint!

Brilliant service and great food, we had a booking for the shard so was in a rush, they made sure we got our food super quick. Lovely place definitely recommend.

This Gem of a cafe is located in the market. I’m an Australian and I got up early to go do borough market and experience the river cruise and was feeling like some traditional English breakfast food and this did not disappoint. Food is great! And service is great!

We had a lovely visit to Maria’s yesterday, it was lovely to meet Ruby, her mum, aunt and the rest of the team! I wanted a proper cup of tea and Panini… it was fabulous!! Whilst there I saw the breakfast, fish and chips and bangers & mash served to other customers, I’ll definitely be visiting again and I’ll be trying the Fish & Chips next!! Lovely to meet you all and thank you for a lovely afternoon ❤️❤️

A nice breakfast consisting of Egg, Bacon, Sausage, Bubble, Beans, Grilled Tomato and Mushrooms for a relatively low price (considering London’s standards). The place is tucked inside Borough Market and service is efficient and friendly. Decent price/quality relation. I think it’s a must visit if you visit the market.

Horrible experience. Very poor service. Seems fully disorganised. Wrong order. Food very average. One anaemic looking egg, cold and watery mushrooms, tasteless sausages. Had to go up to the counter to get cutlery after getting sick of waiting for waitress bring some. Got the cutlery and it wasn't clean. Waitresses too busy out the back eating. Plenty of other waaaay better options around Borrough Market.

Very bad place. Burger Bun was cold, I had to ask for mayo and ketchup and the workers were kind of rude.

It is a fantastic cafe, with quality produce. Nice atmosphere within the Borough Market. Staff are very friendly. We had breakfast rolls, which were gorgeous. A must to visit in the market.

Waited 20+ minutes for my food while sitting and watching food being served to those customers who came after me. Waitresses have no sense of which customer came first and still waiting even when they saw me on their way bringing food to other tables. I'm sure there are better places for sit down meal at the Borough Market.

Worst and most expensive breakfast I've ever had. Bubble was bland made with potatos with brocoli, which was the consistency of baby food. Black pudding was thin overcooked and resembled a crisp best thing on the plate was the sausage which I think was boiled, 2 breakfast, tea, coffee, and burnt toast £40. Don't waste your money.

I don't know why I got this deformed Fish and Chips when I visited there last week. I had the impression that some in the Kitchen were making fun of me with this. All the other white people had a normal looking long Fish and Chips. Obviously they do not care touristic customers, as they come only one time. I didn't complain about this, as I didn't want to waste energies and times. Go there with white people, if you want to get treated normally.

Ordered a full English and they forgot two of my items from it. When I raised this they did nothing about it, didn't get me the missing items or refund me for them. The quailty of food also wasn't worth the price.

Ordered The English and scrambled eggs on toast with salmon, 2 latte's for £35! Seemed to be a lot of confusion over which table ordered what, when it came I was offered The Market special which was wrong, I asked if it was The English and was told no as The English comes with black pudding, they took it away and returned with the same plate of food with a slice of black pudding added, judging by others pictured you sometimes get one sausage or two, I got one which was a shame as it was the only thing on the plate which tasted nice, the mushrooms were tinned, the bacon was hard and overdone the egg looked nice but was hard on the bottom the bubble was boiled potato with a bit of broccoli (I think) mashed into it, just very poor, my wife's scrambled egg definitely looked microwaved and pale with a slither of salmon, the coffees were ok, no way worth £35, maybe we came on a bad day, apparently there are menus about but we didn't see any and ordered off the board with no prices.

The food was delicious. Service was good. The only small thing is the plates were cold. Warm plates would hdlp to keep food warm. Definitely visit again

Friendly staff but some confusion about food orders. Salmon tasted great, eggs were too dry for my liking. My husband enjoyed some of the items on his plates. No prices up on the board but menus are available. These 2 meals and 2 lattes were £35 This is a very good spot for people watching.

We took the tube all the way from Kensington just to try their full English Breakfast (based on a recommendation). Based on high expectations, we were disappointed. The sausage was very good, that was the best part. The egg was a bit over cooked, the bacon was a bit too fatty, and the grilled tomato was mushy. The atmosphere is nice, being in the market. The service was fast. We’d eat here again, and try something different, but we wouldn’t make a special trip.

A perfect lunch at Maria's Market Cafe in Borough Market. A perfect balanced menu to fill you hungry belly. The ladies were pleasant and smiling throughout the rush and hustle and bustle... very impressive. Laura and the girls are a must visit.

Start your day off right at Borough Market with a full English fry up! Tables are tight and small and a queue builds up past 10AM but relatively easy to get your order. I’d get a Turkish coffee from the Turkish Deli to complement the meal for a stronger start to the day :-)

There were about 4 ladies working in the morning. Around 9ish? All very friendly and smiling polite, to every customer. Service was fast too. I had breakfast in bap, which had had beans, bubble and squeak (I never had it before and loved it), sausages (I normally don't like the ones produced in UK but first time I actually liked some), egg, bacon, cheese and black pudding. It all tasted absolutely great. See the photo and judge for yourself. I know!! Lol I use ketchup, not brown sauce 😂. Crime!!!! Lovely service and located right inside the Borough market. Can't fault it one bit!!!

It was opened earlier than Market and allowed as to have breakfast. I can't tell that it was my best meal - egg, weird mashed potato, sweet beans, kind of bacon (very thick slice), sausage and tomatoes. Just to try once.

Hadn't opened yet - lady serving was still kind enough to do me a bacon roll with brown sauce, very tasty also. Caff breakfast food served with warmth and charm.

The most 4 star place I can think of. The food and service is decent. It filled me up and I didn't get poisoned so no complaints here.

This is the best restaurant I have ever been to. They are so friendly and nice! The food is also delicious! I told them it was my first time and they gave me the best experience ever with a free drink on the house(they even told me they love my smile! 😊). I love really them. When I am in central London, I will always come back here

Longest wait for the worst cafe mocha I’ve gotten in London. Skip this place. There are other good coffee spots inside the market. Check them out! The only thing keeping this business relevant is the fact that King Charles visited it once...

We visited Borough Market this morning and had a delicious breakfast at Maria’s Cafe

Tomamos un Englisch Breakfast delicioso.

Overpriced n filthy. veggie breakfast and americano came uptown £16 for one person. They gave us forks that were clearly not washed, had dried food yuck, overall food Wass not tasty either. hygiene was gross.

Just a horrendous dining experience in every possible way! Granted this is basically diner food but somehow they missed on every mark. The only thing we found enjoyable was the clown show that took place while we waited 25 mins for a BLT, soup and their version of a panini. People who arrived 15-20 mins after us were served before we were as they clearly lost our order….and I asked about our food twice! It all made sense as there are about 8-10 tables at this tiny café and we literally watched 6-7 times as they tried to figure-out what food went to which table, often returning to the kitchen counter clueless and asking for help. When our food finally arrived it was awful; one piece of ham and greasy melted cheese on a dry roll. Try ANY place else at Borough Market, trust me!

The longest queue I’ve ever seen for coffee with six staff they haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. I think they’re almost growing the coffee for a coffee

I have always loved Maria caf, and when she was there and the caf was slightly smaller IT WAS AMAZING. BEST BACON ROLLS AROUND. Come 2023, when I paid another visit... different story... had a fry-up there which was below average. And I was served wrong breakfast AND I ended up paying £14.50 for a breakfast which DIDN'T come wtih toast or tea... extremely disappointed, and I can't say I wanna go back after that fee. I guess good things don't last forever... 😔

Thought we’d give this a try as Centreforce radio always give this a shout out as the place to go.. we were not impressed, cold food, half a cup of tea, service time was slow and we had to keep asking how long, the ladies cooking the food had no hair nets on and hair was swaying all over the place, was not a clean and hygienic set up, food was average. This is just a place for tourists to be ripped off and not for locals looking for a good breakfast.

I was served a FROZEN sausage. We ordered two sandwiches and two juices, one sandwich came and tasted alright, but after about fifteen minutes they brought us the second sandwich with 2 cooked and 1 frozen sausages inside. Terrible experience.

This establishment has an interesting history and story behind it. However, there were some areas for improvement during our recent visit. On a positive note, the location in Borough market is convenient, and the staff was generally friendly, although at times they appeared a bit confused. During our Saturday breakfast, we ordered the market special, a cappuccino, and some toast on the side. Unfortunately, our coffee order was mixed up and we received a different order. However, we appreciated that when we brought this to the staff's attention, they promptly corrected the mistake. Additionally, our food was significantly delayed, and our order was mixed up and forgotten several times. We also did not receive the toast that we had paid extra for, and the breakfast itself was only average. The bubble and squeak was particularly dry, and the bacon was not cooked through. Overall, I believe that this establishment could significantly improve by focusing on enhancing the table service. While the staff was generally friendly, they appeared a bit confused and disorganized, which led to several mistakes in our order. With better table service, I think the overall experience would be greatly improved.

We visited Borough Market this morning & I opted for an English breakfast at Maria’s Market Cafe. It was the best English breakfast I’d ever had. It was Mother’s Day so we were allowed a glass of Prosecco with it from next door which made it more special. However, Compliments to the Chef, Adam I think ?

Authentic British cafe experience in the heart of Borough Market! All the classics are there and portions are extremely generous for the price paid. My gammon with eggs and chips was as real as it gets and I’ll eat this again there anytime!

Suggest running away from this cafe. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND HEALTH. Also, I want to add my personal experience to the previous review from Andrii. My boyfriend and I went to this cafe after our Sunday run. We had heard a lot about Maria Cafe, so we decided to order English breakfast there. About our experience: 1 The cafe wasn't clean enough, but because of the location and tourist experience, we weren't too picky. 2 The service wasn't good at all. The waitress forgot to give me a fork and knife, and we saw tables with dirty plates. 3 The English breakfast wasn't tasty. Something similar to potato cake was cold and unpleasant. The sausage was burned, and the rest of the ingredients were just average and not tasty. So I didn't finish my meal. After that experience: After this meal, we went to the hotel to rest, and hour after hour, we started feeling that something was wrong. I was lucky because I didn't finish my meal, so I felt bad but not as much as my boyfriend. He had a fever, vomited, and had all the symptoms of food poisoning. Our trip was ruined, and our stomachs stopped. We tried to visit the cafe to talk with the manager, but for the next two days, Maria's Cafe was closed. I truly believe that we were poisoned at Maria's Cafe. I don't have medical expertise, but I have proof that we were there and ordered there. My only motivation is to share my experience with other tourists and tell them to be careful. Because we paid too much for this English breakfast, and I'm not talking about money.

GOT FOOD POISON HERE. AVOID THIS PLACE. I had a meal on Sunday, March 5th at around 11:45am with my girlfriend, right around the time when they stopped serving the English breakfast. We ordered 2 English breakfasts together with typical tea with milk. And guess what? Around 1.5 hours after eating, I felt really sick and heavy. I threw up every bite of this breakfast and had a fever for around 12 hours in the hotel. After that, I couldn't eat anything for around 2 days in a row. This place just ruined my vacation and plans that my girlfriend and I had in London. We lived nearby and went there on Tuesday to complain in person since we had a flight in the second half of Tuesday, the 7th. However, they were closed. We asked a few places in Borough Market for the reason, but everyone said it was strange, and the place should be open. Either the staff also got sick, or it was just a coincidence. Anyway, I do not recommend this place at all. As proof, I am attaching photos.

Myself and my Mum was in town as we was visiting The Shard. We saw Maria's Market Cafe and stop to have a latte and a breakfast. OMG it was beautiful. Loved every mouthful. Very friendly staff. Very welcoming. Nice little cafe. Thank you

No menu until you get to the counter , sausages , were nice the rest was average at best , and overpriced , tourist rip off. Coffee was one of the worst I've ever tasted.

Myself and my husband stumbled upon this gem the ladies were so friendly and made a point of coming over for a chat best cuppa I had while over here and even gave us some valentines chocolates💌 if we are ever back in London we are making here a definite stop😄

It's a nice cafe with nice food. There is a seating area & the food is a good price.
