Marias Greek Taverna in Cardiff

What a great authentic Greek restaurant! Went here for lunch and was served promptly. The food was delicious (actually better than I remembered from my last time in Greece!), and I saw several dishes on the menu that I’ve got to come back to try. The portions were very generous and filling - almost too bad as I didn’t have space for dessert! Will definitely be returning.

Really lovely place that brings back memories of holidays to Greece. Traditional, fresh and homemade food that’s really great value. A family business that’s really trying hard to provide a great restaurant for the community. I had the pork souvlaki what was really good, although it was slightly dry. I would recommend to the restaurant to use a fattier cut like pork belly. Apart from that can’t fault it!

Popped into Maria’s on the off chance that there may be space. We were greeted so well, and the ambiance was perfect for our evening meal. Every meal we ordered was delicious, and took us back to our holidays in Greece years ago. We will definitely return. A great team to support.

We’ve dined here so many times with family and different friends and groups and we’ve never once had a disappointing meal - fantastic food. The food is really delicious and the welcome is extremely warm and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble and a visit won’t leave you disappointed, but keen to return.I cannot recommend this restaurant enough!A greek delight in Cathays …..

My second visit here and they did not disappoint, food was lovely and so much of it. We went for family meal For dads birthday, the range of food we had was amazing and very tasty.Reasonably priced here and the staff are very friendly and helpful.Dad was even presented with “ birthday dessert” Will definitely be back and would highly recommend this place, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed

Being half Greek, means when I eat Greek food I expect to taste like my giagia’s (granny’s in Greek) and this place did not disappoint. First I need to mention the service - Mario the owner is excellent when it comes to customer service. He clearly is passionate about his business and his customers and you are made to feel like you have entered his home as a friend for a meal. The decor is a traditional Greek taverna which our party loved (my mother, nephew and myself). It would be a great party venue as well as a date night or a family get together. Now the food - my nephew had the Kleftiko which was out of this world delicious. Mum and I ate from the grill and all was cooked to perfection (if I shut my eyes I could be back in granny’s house in the village) Desserts - we went for the traditional orange sponge and the baklava. Oh boy these did not disappoint either. Both made in house and both made as they should be traditionally. I have to say the orange sponge is incredible not necessarily what an English person may think of as sponge but as a Greek it is the best. We will definitely be back Mario. X

We just had a takeaway and we're disappointed in comparison to previous takeaways and a visit to the restaurant. The lamb chops were tiny, I thought they were poor value, whilst the chips were nice the previous recipe with oregano and olive oil was far better. The salads had feta in them before as standard and tonight they were smaller.Overall we're not really impressed as was late, luke warm and poor value in context with previous orders.No email address to provide this feedback directly hence doing this publicly!

My partner and I had really lovely meals here. The staff were friendly and professional and the atmosphere was really nice. The food was fantastic and it was great that my gluten free, and vegetarian diet was catered for. We were both very impressed and will definitely be back and will recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

Ave Maria's! Praise where it is due. Really enjoyable lunch today (New Years Day Bank Holiday) when many other establishments were not open. Haloumi fries, drizzled with honey (no mint as advertised on the menu), were moreish. Filo parcel of feta cheese were superb. The crispiness, lightness and noisiness of the bites were amazing. The main courses were substantial. Beef patties stuffed with feta were a big eat and very tasty, the chicken souvlaki flavoursome. Both accompanied by a fresh salad and soft and warm pitta bread. Definitely will revisit to explore many other inviting dishes on the menu.

Myself and my wife decided a fortnight ago to pop along to Cardiff and try a Greek restaurant. We had looked at a few online and choose this one and were very pleased that we did so. We parked behind in what looked like a co-op car park on Crwys Road but had no problems. Upon arrival there was a nice feel about the restaurant and the gentleman taking orders was very polite and took time to also mention specials on the board that were available on the day. We tried a multitude of different foods from Greek Sausages, Patties, Moussaka etc and were very impressed by everything that we ordered. There is a good selection on the menu and we genuinely look forward to returning to sample some more dishes and of course a glass or Red.

Visited for a special birthday meal and we were treated to a delicious offering appreciated by fans of greek food, with a treat of souvlaki from the chef. Super-friendly staff, impressive fire in the open kitchen. Recommended!

Just had my birthday meal with friends. We shared meze great way to eat , 2 vegetarians and a meat eater allergic to peas beans nuts and fish! But we managed to share a great range a food all cooked fresh. Friendly service with a huge Greek smile thanks to the chef for amazing presentation of our desserts. Shows we are the wrong age group — none of us thought of taking a photo lol the orange pie is a must! With Ice cream of course!

We ate at Maria’s last night and had a wonderful evening. The food is authentic Greek, lots of choice, and everything was hot and delicious. Can’t wait to go back for the feta bites! The Greek red wine was really good. The staff and owner are all very welcoming and friendly. Looking forward to our next visit.

We order the Village takaway box for two people and it was amazing value for two people (£26) for more than enough food! Will definitely be coming back

Ate here with my friend and her 6 month old, the waiter was very friendly and accommodating. Food was wonderful especially the feta bites and we were made to feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be eating here again.

We stopped here by chance when we out and needed something to eat. It looked nice from the outside and the menu was lovely. I ordered the halloumi with mint and honey with chunky chips and garlic pitta and my husband ordered the souvlaki. Quite possibly some of the best food that I have ever eaten and the owner/chef was so lovely and incredibly proud of his restaurant and food.

Second visit whilst visiting out son at Uni. The menu is not extensive, but that is not a problem as the quality of the food offered is very good uncomplicated Greek fare.Staff were really friendly on both visits.Maria's will be out restaurant of choice when we visit our son!

Waitress judged us for being poor and looked down on us like peasants when all we wanted was some tap water. Food took almost an hour and half to arrive. When it came it was bland, and tasted like dog breath… at least that’s what I remember, I was so ravenous at that point I inhaled it in 5 minutes flat. We received an apology from the staff however the table next to us who had came in after us had their food on the house! ‍♀️Service, food and price 1/10

Went here for the first time today (after having delivery's for months) what a lovely experience. The host was an absoloute gentleman! It was super clean the food was fresh and delicious cooked extremely good. I will be returning my partner really enjoyed the experience aswell. We had 2 drinks each prawn starter for main ee had a sharing plater for 2 was loads to be fair! The bill was very fair for the experience we had! Keep up the good work team!

I was in the area and decided to pop in for a bite to eat. I was quickly seated, and well looked after by the incredibly attentive owner! Portions are large, i opted for two dishes off the meze menu rather than a main and was stuffed. The saganaki is absolutely fantastic, and the decor inside really gives you a feeling of being in Greece. Will definitely be back again!

We had booked a table for 7 people, my brother and his wife were visiting from Newcastle and we had not seen them for over 4 years. we all looked forward to our family meal especially as the restaurant was featuring live music. On arrival it was evident that there was no room for our table of 7. Although we had booked the table for 8 pm and had arrived in plenty of time. We were advised that an error had occurred with regard to our booking and that they were unable to seat us. Fortunately my son in law managed to get us a table at another restaurant so rescued our evening. I have given a score of 1 star only due to the fact we did receive a text message from Marias apologising. A pity this has happened as, from historic visits, we knew the food was good. Not too sure we will revisit.

Had a lovely meal with great service. The guys playing traditional Greek music were good but totally overpowered the whole restaurant. To the point you could not hear yourself think. Meant to enhance the experience but for us totally runied it.

My friend surprised me for my birthday as I am Greek Cypriot and it was lovely to converse in my 1st language. We had Calamari for starters absolutely superb! We had chicken souvlaki and village salad - way too much so we took some home for our lunches! They brought out a slice of Baklava with a candle which was lovely gesture and made my birthday more special the staff were so friendly and made me and my friend and her son so welcome right from the very start. The food is big and very filling, great value for the price you pay and super tasty. The service was fast and friendly, lovely ambience and I think I'm going to become a regular at the beautiful restaurant after last nights experience.…. Lovely ambience and live music to start with. Ordered the feta cheese with honey which was nice. The main meal of lamb chops, huge chips, salad and Pitta bread with dip was very authentic. Mythos to accompany the meal, great.

Great atmosphere with the band playing. Fantastic food and fabulous service. The 2 front of house team looked after the whole restaurant with a huge smile on their faces. Thank you for making our anniversary meal such a lovely experience. We’ll be back soon for metaxa and baklava

This was our first time in the restaurant and we throughly enjoyed ourself, food was fantastic and very authentic. The waiter and owner wherd very friendly and welcoming. It's a shame we live 3 hours away as we would love to be regulars. It's a shame this resturant isnt located in Cardiff town centre, as it's a true gem of a restaurant. From cardiff castle it was a 25mins walk. It was worth it!

Called in at lunchtime today. No booking was necessary as it was quiet. Served by a very friendly member of staff who talked us through the traditional Greek offerings on the menu. We chose the chicken souvlaki which was cooked fresh in a timely manner. Piping hot, the three tasty skewers were served with chunky chips, salad, bread and a dip. It looked good and tasted even better.Very reasonable cost with a couple of drinks , we both left happy and full. Would love this restaurant in our home town- we would be regulars

A real lovely gem of an authentic Greek taverna, with fabulous staff and excellent cuisine . As a family group of ten visiting for a birthday meal the staff were attentive and really efficient the night went far too quickly for my liking and has left us longing for another visit . We all had different dishes ranging from the grilled sea bass , Lamb Kleftico , meat platters and mere all of which were absolutely faultless . A must visit

We had a meal delivered from here last week. My husband ordered lamb chops, they were the smallest chops I have ever seen. My order was chicken souvlaki, which unfortunately was totally inedible. There was a strange smell coming from the food which was very powerful and smelt like some kind of fuel. I rang the restaurant but they were not really interested just said come to the restaurant you will have a lovely time. Contacted just eat who again were not interested. Food went in the bin. Expensive lesson.

We will definitely return. My son loved his gyros. We can’t wait to try other dishes. The interior of this restaurant does have the ambience of a taverna. It is also very clean.

Another fantastic meal at this lovely restaurant! A warm welcome, great food, great service and a safe place for delicious gluten free food. I’m a Coeliac and have eaten here 3 or 4 times now. I love the food and I’ve have never had a problem regarding being ‘glutened’ … just let them know you’re a Coeliac and they really look after you. We love it! Heartily recommend a visit here if you’re in Cardiff.

Ate here for 3 nights out of four. We loved the food especially Large fresh Greek Salads. Fresh Bream cooked to perfection. Lamb kleftico???? er lamb shanks!Mousaka his GM’s special recipie. Yay Fab!Tzatziki. …Er minty yogurt. With loads of fresh soft toasted bread. A bit like tandoori bread. Loved the staff. Waitress very welcoming Er Marios, was very friendly totally hospitable. Poor thing how he coped and could be bothered to entertain us with that mask on!Genuine Good Guy!Open late so grateful for that. Er what else? Oh yeah. I know. Nice calm clean decor baby blue and white. Seaside theme. Corfu. With nice tables which altogether made me feel totally relaxed…..Loved the Greek Family pictures and Greek Frames. Ahhh!That is why we went back 3 times. Very Happy. Not sure that I’ll be back in Cardif soon but we wish the family all the very best of luck. They deserve it. Was totally full. We have visited Maria's a couple of times to sit in and ordered take away on a number of occasions. The food is always superb. But the atmosphere is even better. Feels like we are on holiday every time we go. Love this place.

I booked a table at this restaurant for my husbands birthday and our anniversary. There was 11 of us altogether. When we arrived the atmosphere was welcoming and the staff were really helpful. So we sat down at our table and ordered some drinks to start with, after a while we ordered food, well, the service was outstanding and the staff made every effort to please us. We all had a really great evening and the food was excellent. I'm not sure if I am just being biased but greek food is one of my favourites as is my husbands favourite too. If I have the chance to go there again I would definitely do so. Would I recommend to others, absolutely, as long as they too enjoy greek food. All in all, it was excellent from start to finish. The only negative is parking is a bit tricky. Thank you to all the staff at Marias for making our evening so wonderful.

Prices up, standard of food down. So noisy in there too. Not a pleasant experience anymore as it once was. Has ownership changed? The food was very average. The starters were nice but the mains very poor. The Souvlaki was tasteless. The Moussaka which used to be superb was dry and hard on top. Previously reviewed highly and sad to have to reassess as "average" at best. It's no longer value for money either. The prices have exploded upwards. Won't be coming back and will try elsewhere now which is a shame as have visited on numerous occasions over the past few years

This is a family run-restaurant, had an amazing atmosphere on a weekday evening, bit of buzz but not too noisy. Ideal for meal out with friends or family. Selection of food is very broad and there's something for everyone, was quite busy but food still didn't take too long. Not too expensive either!

Orderes a takeaway, 2 gyros kebabs and 1 mixed platter and the food was awesome! It was our children's first Greek food experience and they loved it and can't wait for the next order. Honestly there is nothing to fault with the food or service and I would highly recommend Maria's. Also it was my birthday and on collection I was given a complimentary bottle of wine! There can’t be a much better way to celebrate a cold February lockdown birthday than to order a delivery from Maria’s. Close your eyes, turn up the heating and you too can be back on your favourite Greek Island, savouring delicious food.It truly is an authentic taste of the Mediterranean. We had a grilled platter, lamb chops, flatbreads, hummus and a glorious Greek salad. All arrived hot and fabulous and very reasonable indeed. Goodness knows when we’ll next be able to get away! Until then, Maria’s is a great substitute for the real thing.

My partner and I visited Maria's Greek Taverna for a birthday meal on Saturday 12th December. It was so sad to see the restaurant deserted on an early evening but the current COVID restrictions are to blame for that. The restaurant inside is charming, down to earth and relaxing. I had the homemade moussaka and my partner had the chicken souvlaki. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS AND AUTHENTIC!!! The staff were friendly, attentive but not overly fussy. The gentleman who served us explained that the moussaka was his mother's recipe! After mentioning it was my birthday, he bought us a piece of Greek dessert with a candle on. It was all such a treat and really made my day. Many thanks to wonderful family at Maria's Greek Taverna - we will be back ASAP! Please, any local people - they provide a takeaway service, please please help support a local family run business and enjoy a taste of Greece in Cardiff at home!

We have visited Marias before all Covid restrictions and ordered from there during lockdown. It was great to be able to eat in tge restaurant again. Very safe, well managed and the food and service were fabulous. Generous portions and so much choice. Thank you!

Went in there just as it opened so we had to create the atmosphere I tried some squid (being brave) the seasoning was awesome but my mate finished the rest! My own fault for trying something I knew I wouldn't like the halooomie (nit sure how to spell it) starter was awesome!!! The nice waiter got us a free beer each for not being attentive at the start but we were none the wiser so winner!!!!Mains were awesome. Chelsea had chops and said were cooked to perfection and I had a veggie option with more halooomie!! Loved it! Chips were banging and music on point!!Two days later I'm still full up (I'm a big girl)!!!Get down there, its super tasty!!!Xxx

I visited last night with my wife, we had a lovely evening there. Marius, the waitress and chef all made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed talking with you. The service is absolutely spot on.The food was delicious and huge authe tic Greek portions! I never leave any food but I had to admit defeat this time. We had the white bait and spicy cheese and pitta starters, pork gyros and chicken souvlaki as mains. I would have loved desert too but couldn't fit it in.I've been to Greece loads of time and this place feels just like it. The music, the decor, the food, the staff. I can't wait to go back with our kids.

Had a lovely evening with my wife last Friday. We received a warm greeting and the whole restaurant was Covid safe. The food was excellent and authentic, just exactly what we were looking for. Help was on hand for any recommendations and question we had. Very friendly and a good wine selection. We just about saved enough room for dessert! Good recommendation and very reasonable Visited here with friends and work colleagues. Decided on ordering food based on our friends recommendation but also the waiter. Great selection and plenty of it at a very reasonable cost! Would visit again and recommend!

Hemos estado en Maria's varias veces y siempre hemos tenido una experiencia fantástica. Mi papá es celíaco, el personal es excelente para satisfacer sus necesidades y hacerlo sentir cómodo y seguro para comer allí. La comida es siempre 10/10 (las papas fritas halloumi y los gyros son increíbles). Siempre traemos amigos visitantes a casa de María.

En realidad, ordenó comida para llevar a través de Uber Eats, quien se equivocó y entregó la comida equivocada. No se pudo contactar con Uber Eats para rectificar, así que me comuniqué directamente con el restaurante. Ellos asumieron la responsabilidad aunque no fue su culpa y organizaron el envío de comida de reemplazo. La comida estaba caliente y deliciosa, y el chico con el que hablé fue increíblemente servicial y resolvió todo rápidamente.
