Mara Fish Bar & Deli in North Ayrshire

Although we omitted to pre-book our order online, we stayed and had a lovely lunch on a beautiful afternoon. You must visit this wonderful eatery if ever visiting Arran. 10/10 +++

Some of the most amazing and inventive (mussels dumplings anyone?!) seafood I have ever had anywhere! Highly recommended! And booking system works!!

We’ve just enjoyed an amazing meal from Mara. The quality of the fish and everything thing else really was first rate. Even the chips were perfect! If you are on Arran your trip is not complete without a visit to Mara

Fabulous, tasty food. I had the honey, miso hake with rice and kale. Husband had mackerel fillets with beetroot risotto. Both different but equally delicious. Good value. Friendly staff.

Mara is currently offering takeaway food during the pandemic, so we ordered ours in advance for pick up the next day. Fantastic menu on offer - I chose the delicious miso, honey and sesame hake fillet with kale and rice, and the kids enjoyed the coley open fish finger sandwich with crushed peas, with a side order of homemade chips. Four very satisfied customers - looking forward to our next visit!

We picked up our pre ordered dinner from here on 2 nights and it was absolutely delicious, I honestly cannot say what was the best out of everything that was ordered as we liked everything it was so fresh & tasty. We had the Crab Bisque, half lobster, Skipness smoked whiting kedgeree with poached egg, Coley open fish finger sandwich, Fish tacoshand cut chips, Arran Kale Pesto new potato salad.We would most definitely eat/order from here again and if it had been open at the beginning of our break we would have eaten from here every night.

Two visits in 4 days brought hake en papilotte, mussels with chorizo and tomato, chips and hasselback potatoes. While these were very good, the goan fish curry and whiting macaroni cheese were both exceptional. Only the mackerel with beetroot risotto proved divisive. Although I appreciate its smoky and oily flavour in other dishes, neither the mackerel (tasted like cod liver oil), the beetroot or the risotto worked. Given that my other half loved it, I might be in a minority of one.As the review suggests, COVID and the closure of Creelers (a few years ago) mean that this remains the outstanding take-away option. Hope to try fish tacos or kedgeree next time.

Had a superb take away supper of Goan fish curry and hake-en-papillote. Book your collection slot early as Mara is (quite rightly) hugely popular. Highly recommended.

We arranged a meal for 3 following the guidance on the website after seeing all of the positive reviews. We were very pleased with the friendly and well organised service. The food was excellent. Only regretted not taking advantage of the takeaway twice on our week’s holiday

We were recommended by a local to use this restaurant as we were leaving Corrie, so we went back and pre ordered Dinner to pick up later in the day.Crab bisque, followed by Hake and smoked Whiting dishes.All excellent and a very friendly girl who took our orders and was there to give us our food on return.Definitely I would recommend the restaurant on the way through.Despite being asked to move on from our parking spot in the motorhome we had a very lovely meal with wine ( our own) looking over the sea !

Live on the island but first time experiencing this amazing takeaway! How can that be??Anyway. Last nights supper was enjoyed by us and our neighbours. The crab raviolo was wonderful. Langoustines awesome. Followed by mains of hake en papillote, Goan curry and mussels, all of which were stunning. Not immediately ready to eat once hubby had returned with the boxes, but no issue whatsoever popping it in a warm oven. No lack of taste (or sauce!!) Fantastic. Unanimous decision best fish dishes around!

One of the best takeaways that we have had for a long time. We ordered via email as soon as the dinner menu was issued online. The food was ready exactly on time and it was hot and very very tasty. I had the hake and my wife had the mackerel both of which were delicious. Highly recommended.

Pre-ordered a lunch for pick up; dishes were all so delicious. Would definitely recommended and will return when we're next back.

We had takeaway from here on a Saturday lunchtime because of excellent TA reviews. We were absolutely not disappointed. Menu for the day appears either the night before or morning on Facebook and we pre-odered foid and time through FB messenger. Response first thing to confirm. We ordered a lot of food cos the menu was so good, I would say a large bisque is enough for 2 people as its so rich, but really delicious. The chips are also to die for! As well as mussels, langoustines, oysters and fish finger sandwich which were just excellent. Really friendly and contact free service, and you can park up opposite and enjoy fabulous food with a cracking view. A must while visiting Arran!

Undeniably delicious but knocked down a few stars because of hefty price. £10 for a few bits of fish, paste and polenta isn’t great value - shame!

We had 3 different fish dishes and some fresh mussels from the deli. All excellent. Lots of choice on the menu. Pre booking a time is a great idea at present. There are lots of grassy banks and picnic benches in Corrie so easy to find a spot for a picnic.

Delicious fish dishes provided from this Fish Bar in the village of Corrie. Ordering in advance was easy. Range of dishes to order all sounded amazing and we were certainly not disappointed with our choice. Beautiful views at the shop front also. Hope to return soon.

If there is one place to visit for food on Arran, this is it!I was recommended by a friend to try here and we are sooo glad we did.The menu changes daily so be sure to check out their instagram or facebook before calling up and placing your order/collection time.We had the wild garlic pesto langoustines, smoked fish mac & cheese, cucumber side salad & fish tacos. All were amazing and all complimented eachother. Definitely share with whoever you're with so you can try more than one thing.Super reasonably priced. Wish we werent leaving Arran today or we would be back again!

Cannot praise this place enough. Been a few times now, and always first class. Couldn't even start to pick a favourite dish, everything is so tasty. My daughter loves it too. Oh, and if the ginger cake is on, don't miss it. A delight

We had fish tacos, hake and chips for lunch today. Amazing!!!! Oh and the coffees are just as good 😊

Perfectly cooked lightly curried herring with a crisp bean and tomato salad and full of flavour fish cakes in a creamy but sharp dressing made a great lunch to eat on the beach beside the Corrie seal.

I always write an honest review and of course this is only my personal opinion. I would like to give more stars, but there was some great and not so great. Staff are lovely! And it’s very popular! So we had to book in advance, and menu changes daily. I’m not a big seafood fan but my family are. We had the fish tacos which I was really looking forward too, but I found them very very salty and the garlic sauce was overpowering (and we all love garlic) however the miso honey hake was absolutely delicious!! As were the home cooked chips! I got langoustines for hubby as he loves prawns and shellfish etc but he found them a bit mushy, however that could just be a personal thing. Food was all fresh and the setting is nice

Great little place. Shoreside (virtually), small but enthusiastic menu. Disappointed fish tacos had sold out, but the goan fish curry was very tasty. Very friendly staff/owners make this a welcome stop off when touring about the island. NOTE, Mara closes for winter period from about mid-October.

Despite the weather a warm welcome from all including Mac. Food as usual superb. Much better with real knives and forks. Fish cakes had a great taste and with dip great. The coley and risotto perfectly seasoned and scrumptious. For afters coffee and merengues so good had to buy some to bring home.

After hearing a lot of great things about Mara, we made a point of visiting for lunch earlier this week. So many good things on the menu (not the usual fish and chips!) and side dishes to choose from. I went for the fish taco and my wife had the vegan taco - both freshly prepared and delicious. The garlic bread was very tasty too. Perhaps played it a bit safe for the first visit - will order something more adventurous next time!With nicer weather we would have sat outside at one of the tables, but the small benches inside at the window were ideal. The owners are friendly and happy to talk through the various menu items to get you started. Definitely recommended!

We had been told the fish dishes at Mara were great but they exceeded expectations. It’s a takeaway with some inside and outside seating. Late afternoon we nabbed two inside seats. I had the smoked whiting gratin and my husband had the Goan fish curry. Pure greed but we also had the roast potatoes with garlic. This is someone who knows exactly how fish should be cooked ! Superb food and really reasonable prices. If you’re looking for a chippy this is not for you but if you’re looking for fish dishes that you’ll rave about then please get yourself along here!

Friendly welcome in pouring rain brought shelter under the outside canopy. With Mac the Westie in close attendance, we ordered 5 items from the daily selection. As 1200 became 1230, this small place really filled up, and various items had vanished from the menu. Good evidence that many people regard this relative newcomer very highly.Although the bisque required more body, I am inclined to agree. Huge mussel spring rolls, fish tacos and the potatoes were all star performers. While mackerel was a brave choice, the bacon crumb on the macaroni cheese was great. As well as the apple jelly sorbet enjoyed by our son, the strong coffee and delicious cake (plum and ginger) brought a smile to my partner's face.As well as service with a smile, our choices totalled £36 including a still water and a coke. Given its location and use of excellent local ingredients, this represented excellent value for money.In short, if you like fish and seafood, there are options to suit everyone. Risotto and mussels looked good on other tables too. Maybe some spoots or fish pakora next time. Must visit.

Having passed Mara’s in the morning we stoped I’m at lunch. So pleased we did. Amazing food, great local produce, friendly staff and a real community feel. Just soooo much better than any pub or other food establishment. Make sure it’s on you to do list if you are on Arran.

This is what I think of when I think of Scotland; freshly cooked local produce in an outstanding location. The taco was burnt though. A real shame; this is my kind of place!

Rarely do places live up to the hype. Mara Fish Bar more than did this.We stopped in for lunch after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and weren't disappointed.The Fish Tacos were simply awesome! Veggie options sounded tasty too & it's easy to see why tables were never empty.Fab view. Fab food. Fab place.A must visit for foodies.

Although small, the food was amazing, beautiful fresh fish and seafood dishes. Great little find in a beautiful place.

Mara's is only small with perhaps three tables outside and a couple more in. It's a fair drive to get there so you might be disappointed if it's full. But you can 'take away' to eat on the beach. Specializing in tasty fish dishes served in disposable containers. Dog friendly (there is one occupying a place there already). Friendly staff doing their very best. Not long open but already everyone is talking and complimenting this place. I just wish them all the very best - they deserve it.

I've been coming to Arran for about 15 years, great scenery, lovely people, dreadful food !.

What a find! This is is the sort of place and set up the National reviews will rave about. It’s the food that really matters here - fresh, tasty, original and plenty of choice. I loved eating from the recyclable ‘plates’ / containers and the feeling that this was a place which was environmentally informed and aware.

We'd been told about the quality of the food at Mara, but from the descriptions had imagined it as a sort of chippie with pretensions, so were delighted to find that while it is - sort of - a takeaway, the food is restaurant quality. We both opted for hake cooked with ginger with egg fried rice, nicely spiced, just the right amount, fish cooked to perfection and eaten looking over the waters towards the mainland on Mara's tiny terrace.

This is a fantastic little eaterie! Seating is limited, but it is mainly a takeaway service. However when we called (at 4pm on a Wednesday) there was only one other couple there so we ate in. Friendly service and first class food at reasonable prices. They do not have a licence to sell alcohol, but you can bring your own or just have one of a wide range of soft drinks. It is dog friendly and the views over the Firth of Clyde are spectacular. Well worth a visit.

Just had a lovely lunch here. Very friendly owners and their beautiful dog were very welcoming. Fish curry and langoustines were so so good. Can’t wait to return!

This was our first stop after the ferry! After coming across this amazing fish bar on Instagram I was desperate to visit and it lived up to all our expectations! We ordered two dishes and a side to take away as the outdoor seating area was full and we had dogs so didn't want to squeeze in and cause chaos. The seating area is totally dog friendly and there were already a couple of dogs outside - just busy (as it should be -it's brilliant!). The service was fantastic - lovely! The food was delicious - fresh and tasty. Well worth a trip!

We visited the Mara on three occasions in early August, having two breakfasts & 8 lunches between us.The menu was imaginative & the food excellent. The coffee too is very good.

Stopped here for a takeaway lunch on a blustery day whilst driving up the coast of Arran. The fish ravioli were delicious, nice to see a small business so busy. Hope it remains successful.

What a find! We were introduced to Mara by friends and ended up eating there every day of our long weekend trip. Food is fresh and menu choice is very good but do get there early as things get sold out quickly due to its popularity. We sampled a variety of foods between us: open fish finger sandwich, lobster bisque, Hale, fish tacos to name a few-everything was delicious

We were recommended to try this place when we hired bikes from Brodick with our two children. What a find. The food is fantastic, my husband had hake and noodles I think which was divine. Lovely little place, definitely worth a visit!

Super simple fresh fish menu & bread for dipping in the juices. Served with recyclable tableware to your bistro bench or table. Daily specials, get in early for all the choices. Excellent young lady at the counter, fancy soft drinks in the chiller & a killer view. What more do you need.

Very tasty and a great variety on dishes on offer. Worth the money. Very fresh and the wait wasn’t even that long.

I did not stay but I used the restaurant the 4 of us had a variety of meals all of which was excellent the new owners have done a great job in modernising the old place, of which I fully approve, the menu is not vast but appetising and they have daily specials,the view from the hotel or the garden are superb, would go again.

1st (and won’t be the last)time visiting here. They have the cutest wee westie greeting you as you come in. Staff were nice and very friendly. Wide and varied many I.e got to try the fish tacos!!!! Relatively Quick service specially as it was quite busy. Reasonably priced and the location has some beautiful sights.

We were told it’s not “fast food “ after we enquiring , having waited 35 minutes . It wasn’t for sure!, however it was very good when it arrived . Would go back with the knowledge it is SLOW but VERY GOOD.😀

I have visited Mara before and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the excellent food to the extent that I have recommended it to friends. This was despite it perhaps being a little over priced for what you got. However I am happy to pay for quality. It is however regrettable that I now have to report that I was extremely disappointed on my last visit on the afternoon of Tuesday 6th Aug 19 to be told that they were busy. Fair enough I thought, however what has prompted me to write this review was the terrible attitude and rudeness of the woman that served us. We ended up leaving before eating. I assume this lady must be one of the owners as no employee would have treated potential customers in such a way.

We had a Sunday lunch at Mara. The food was brilliant (all fish dishes of course), the view of the sea lovely and the staff, especially Liam, really efficient and helpful even though they were rushed off their feet.

Turned away because they were "too busy." staff rude and abrupt. Many menu items sold on a weekday afternoon. Go else where.

Crackin little place, staff great, not licensed but the hotel 50 yards away is, is no issues there. Go early to ensure your first choice is still there..

No idea what the food is like because taking orders was “suspended” without explanation for 30 min. Of itself this would be fine but, being rudely told off for returning before 30 min was just too much - won’t be back!

At 2pm on a Sunday afternoon we were hungry so decided to stop at this little cafe for a bite to eat. We were not disappointed. The food was great! Skipness Smoked Whiting Kedgeree with an Arran Salad and coley with Spiced Chickpeas and Chunky Skin-on Chips. I thoroughly recommend stopping here although don’t be too late as everything will sell out.

We've been coming to Arran most summers since I was a baby and when we arrived this year about 4 people independently told us to try Mara. It was excellent - really interesting menu, and the portions were fairly light (which is a nice chance from most places in Arran serving standard pub fare). The fish tacos were amazing. Very relaxed - counter service with food served in (recycled) boxes and self-clear up.

Shhh don’t tell anyone about how amazing this place is. Never had fresher, better food. Fish tacos, fish finger sandwich and amazing coley and spicy chick peas. Great baking from a local bakery - raspberry brownies.

An absolute gem of a place. Absolutely beautiful, street food-style seafood with lovely, friendly staff (including Mack the dog!) and a relaxed atmosphere. A must if you find yourself exploring Arran.

Very relaxed informal style, with children and dogs running about. Superb flavoursome food in disposable containers, rapid service, portions appropriately sized. A memorable experience.

This is a nice place for a light lunch with freshly prepared fish and shellfish dishes made to order. Good coffee and cake too. Our compliments to the young chef.

Unusual deli with food served in takeaway boxes. My treat was mussels and chorizo served with chunky chips. Def recommend and nice sit out area too at Corrie. No booze not loo but think u can take your own and use the hotels loo too don't let thus put you off

Came highly recommended & the quality of food & ethos met expectations. A takeaway with a few seats so don't be surprised to have your food served in a recyclable box. The food is prepared to order so if it's busy you might have a wee wait, worth it tho'. We had Pollock fish finger sandwich with crushed peas & lettuce, the fish tacos & shared a portion of chips. Excellent quality & really tasty. There was lovely artisan bread available to buy and various eco products. So glad we managed to visit during our brief stay in Arran. I felt it was value for money - if we want decent food we need to pay a fair price!

Had a lovely lunch at mara fish bar. The fish taco was the best I have ever had and the mussels were the largest I have ever seen. Nice sea views too. Recommended

Great wee Deli with a strong focus on all things fishy. Perfect accompaniment to a dis walking i the hills.

We called to get some food to takeaway as it was raining and there wasn’t seats inside to sit at! We ordered the Hake with roast potatoes and a tomato sauce and a portion of their tacos. We had a long wait ... they aren’t the fastest! When it came it was in small cardboard containers. There was a small piece of hake in the middle with 4 potato wedges and sauce and while it was tasty the portion was vary small for the £10 paid. The tacos were two in the same size box as the hake. These were delicious but again expensive for what you got. I would hate to be a large family as it would be an expensive lunch! Tasty but couldn’t afford to visit again!

Can't add much to other reviewers other than to say that the owners are right on the money with this little place - F&C; taken cleverly upscale but not fancy. Excellent quality (not just the seafood but the bread for the fish finger sandwiches is superb), really friendly, and a cosy stop on a wet day (we were lucky in arriving mid afternoon to be able to be seated). It was doing plenty of takeout business at the same time.

Visited Mara last week on a very wet and miserable Thursday and most certainly we weren't disappointed. Caught the 324 bus from Blackwaterfoot and Mara is close to the Corrie Hotel (100 yards away) and has bus stops outside. The langoustine bisque was very nice, Bouillabaisse without the bits but lovely and creamy and a great start to proceedings. I then had the whiting tacos and Mrs Mystic had the coley fish fingers and Blackwater Bakehouse Sourdough with superb thick cut well fried chips and all washed down with a lovely cup of tea. It was truly brilliant and we are returning in a week or so to introduce friends and family to this gem of a restaurant.

We’d read the reviews and made a special trip; we didn’t regret it.

Came for lunch after reading the reviews, reviews don't do it justice. The food was amazing, so much so we had seconds. Really relaxed little place next to the sea and can thoroughly recommend. If you are there and the Ling with the wild garlic pesto is available, you will not regret having it.

If you are on the Isle of Arran and like seafood you need to seek out Mara at Corrie on the east coast just up the road from Brodick. The food is outstanding and we just wish it was open in the evenings as well, it closes at 5:00pm.

Only a little place with seating around the walls and outside tables. But with big style and quality. The location is lovely - look for the seal sculpture off the harbour.

We are returning visitors .We always eat here when on Arran.The menu is quite extensive.I enjoyed the fresh long with pesto,roast potatoes and capers all cooked in parchment paper.The cullen skink is as good as I have ever tasted anywhere achieved without the use of cream.Too many restaurants use too much cream in cullen skink.

We stopped here during our day trip to Arran. Arrived at 4pm for a cup of tea but when we saw the menu decided to have an early tea. It was too good to miss.

We visited on Easter Sunday and had the fish tacos and frittata, both delicious.We ate them whilst sitting on the bench opposite, right beside the sea. Idyllic.

It’s fantastic to see young people setting up a new and innovative business. This is a great place to eat. We stayed in Corrie for a week and frequented Mara several times. Could not rate it higher for fresh seafood and if you like kippers for breakfast, get there for 09:30 on the dot. They are to die for!

I was recommended Mara by a local on the island who works nearby -- he actually said: "if you don't go to Mara I will personally kick you into the sea." So I figured we'd give it a visit ;) We were not disappointed!

Perfect spot for lunch if you like fresh sea food with a view. We had the razor clams, the curry and the lobster bisque : all very tasty.

Only other time I’ve experienced anything like this is the market stalls in The Ramblas Barcelona. A rainy midweek lunchtime and the place is packed. Dogs and children everywhere. We order our food and then stand to wait passing the time of day with tourists and locals. Knowing that this restaurant is in a tiny Hamlet stretched along the North west shore of Arran you wonder where all the people come from. It’s exciting just reading the menu and I was tempted by a tomato soup with whiting, or a kedgiree and then an intriguing fish stew with sauerkraut.

Fresh, sustainable, delicious, friendly, by the sea. What more could you ask for? This place is definitely not a “chippie” (although it does great chips), it is the future and shows what all small eateries that rely on passing trade should aspire to be!

If ever there was a hidden gem - this is it. Tucked away in an idyllic corner of Corrie overlooking the sea, on the stunning Isle of Arran, we have found our new favourite place for lunch ever. The menu changes daily, with fresh locally sourced, sustainable seafood dishes served in a posh street food style. We chose grilled mackerel fillet with salsa verde & handcut chips and fish tacos with mint and guacamole Open less than a year, this cracking little fish bar and deli has nailed it on every level. Friendly, professional, knowledgeable and passionate service combined with the most amazing food is something you can only dream of finding on your island travels. Bring your own chilled bottle of Chablis or Maçon Village (from the Co-op in Brodick) to complement your lunch and you will have found a little piece of heaven!

We had been wanting to visit Mara for some time, after following the instagram page. Finally made the trip on Sunday and we were not disappointed.

Tiny cafe and deli - has a rustic look and is a bit short on facilities (like seats!) but the food, which is served in take away style containers, is simply amazing!

Simply cooked spanking fresh seafood bursting with punchy flavours and aromatic herbs. Served in paper trays don’t expect a fine dining restaurant but do expect fine dining food. Always hits the mark and best food on island hands down. This guy knows what he is doing with mackerel, my favourite fish. Last year had it with some spiced chickpeas and this time with salsa verde and insanely crisp polenta. Outrageously good lunch and lovely folk too

Best place to eat in Arran! If you like freshly cooked food and good environmental ethics then this place will not disappoint. The langoustine bisque is to die for, so much so, we returned the following day for some more.

If you like an interesting, modern take on seafood you’ll love Mara.

I visited in July. I had Vegan Tacos and Chips all freshly cooked. We sat outside looking over the sea. I recommend you stop by for lunch you won't be disappointed. I'm going to Arran again in two weeks. Fingers crossed I can visit again

We had lunch here after seeing the great reviews and were not disappointed. Most choices are daily specials depending on what types of fish are available. It's good to find a place that serves many different types of fish in new ways and flavours. Hubby had cajun spiced fish and I had roast Hake with roast potato wedges, both were very tasty. We had side dishes of green beans (served in a soy sauce dressing, very good) and some of the local bread, again all really nice. We ate outside as it was a nice day and we had the dog with us. There is limited seating inside, so you may have to wait if it's busy when you arrive. We were also lucky to order before a large group so had a fairly short wait, but I think the group had to wait a while to get theirs, as there are only two in the kitchen, so be patient - it's worth the wait. Highly recommended.

Really good food. Very reasonably priced. Great ambiance. Think you guys are a couple? ( forgive me if not). So jealous of the concept, but wishing you the best of luck in your ventures. I’m sure the next time we are in Arran, you will be in bigger premises. Never forget the concept, that’s why you’re amazing.

Wonderful zingy fish tacos. Good coffee. Great menu. Wonderful view out to sea. Friendly staff. An absolute find. Also bought some amazing sourdough bread and red onion and tomato focaccia.

We have visited Mara 4 times now, twice when it just opened and twice in September 2018. The food has been consistently excellent and varied. As a vegetarian I appreciate the effort that has gone into the veggie option on the menu, and the inclusion of veggie sides. The rest of the family loved all the fish dishes. It is primarily a take away so you have to be prepared to take out if there isn’t a seat available, which is fine as long as you are aware of it and don’t expect a full cafe set-up. It is an inspiring place with very high standards and the owners are clearly passionate about the business. Look forward to future visits.

Well, we agree with all the previous excellent comments. A very special place. Excellent menu in a perfect setting. Also, you can tell a lot of thought has gone into environmental issues. Wherever possible, biodegradable materials are being used. Worth going to Arran for!
