Went there for a late dinner earlier this week. Words cannot describe how bad this place actually is. Ok let's start from the service. Two young girls who did not have any interest in customer service did not do any service apart from taking the order and bringing the food. In between they had loads of fun playing on their phones and laughing out loud. When we ordered THICK noodles from menu pointing it out and giving them the number they were listed under somehow we received THIN noodles because they don't have the thick ones. Once we pointed them on the menu we heard that those were thick and they don't do any other ones with no apology. Why don't they change the menu or at least let us know?? Never mind. The quality of the food was really law too. Everything was just sank in oil. Got pictures. My aubergine came filled up with tons of inedible oil. The noodles that we could not change where all shiny from oil and the seafood it should come with was just slices of scallops and few pieces of old squid. No prawns nor any thing you'd expected. My partners chicken was so small and had too much seasoning too. When we saw the check where it was £19 for it we couldn't believe. Overall the only positive thing we can say is that comparing this place to other restaurants around it looks quiet decent. But don't let that lure you inside. My partner and I both agreed about the ratings: decor 4/10, food 3/10, service 2/10.

This is a truly exceptional Chinese restaurant. We spend August every year in Yunnan in China with family and this restaurant is as good as anywhere we have eaten there in the last 9 years. The huge bowls of noodles, not really my thing, remind my partner of home and the meat dishes are superb for me.The service is excellent and in contrast to a lot of the surly and rude service generally on offer in Chinatown.Try the duck cooked in beer. There is also a very good wine list.Cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

Maotai kitchenOK. It’s Chinatown and the shop-front looks like a Hollister store but you ain’t goin’ t’ find no california beach babes inside and thankfully no crass west-coast musac either. As advertised, the food is brilliant and different. A wide range of (often spicy to very spicy) freshly cooked, beautifully prepared Guizhou (look it up) dishes. Noodles (USP man making noodles in front window) a speciality. You won’t get these dishes in any take-away and the descriptions may not be familiar but what is lost in translation is gained in taste. Be careful, the online menu is not identical to the in-house menu but looks very similar. Be bold. Choose something you wouldn’t normally consider, eat something conventional if you must (the crispy duck pancakes are exactly that). Pigs’ ears (or should that be pig’s ears?), pork and chestnuts (no 115) or aubergine (no 94), whatever we chose was delicious - ask for the food to be delivered fresh from the kitchen. It tastes better.Remember as you leave, you haven’t paid for the premises, you’ve paid for the staff and the food.bon appétit

We had the maotai set menu which includes two of the most typical starters and 4 mains with rice. The portions were very generous and felt like they could be the full size portion so we certainly didn't go hungry! The quality of the food was good and we enjoyed everything although it is probably typical UK Chinese takeaway style and quality rather than something particularly exotic or high end, although admittedly this might just be because we chose the most typical set menu, they have many other more unusual options and a noodle chef in the front of house. Generally I think this is a good option in Chinatown and would go back to try some of the different dishes on offer.

I am a regular at this restaurant mainly because they probably serve the best hand-pulled noodles, but the waitresses definitely have bad attitude - certainly first class at that. The restaurant serves both hot and cold food which are very well cooked. The noodles are something special as they have a chef there making it fresh each day. It's not no frozen noodles or packaged noodles they get from a cash & carry. The soup is slightly bland but you can be sure that it is healthy without other strange flavourings or MSG. Definitely do try the noodles there. The service here is generally standard. I have seen the reviews about "Lazy staff with bad attitudes" and it's "Great if you're Chinese" (from American tourists). I'm Chinese and disappointly I have also suffered the same service as these other guest who wrote reviews on here. I had ordered Beef in Black Bean Sauce. What landed on my table was Chicken in Black Bean Sauce. I assumed the waitress had written the wrong dish down but was still happy to eat it. When the bill came, it turns out that the waitress had written down Beef. Informing her that we had Chicken instead of Beef, she insisted that we was wrong and it was all beef. Then brought back my plate from the sink to prove to me that the meat was beef. I am now certainly convinced that the beautiful piece of white flesh (chicken thigh) with the crispy chicken skin on it is in fact beef. It was also a treat to hear the three waitresses to say nice things about us when we paid and left. What I liked best? The food, especially the noodles is definitely worth going for. What I liked least?Despite being a regular at this restaurant and after having my intelligence insulted like that I don't think I will ever feel welcomed by the staff here to return once again. It's certainly a real loss because all I really do enjoy eating the noodles here.

My friend recently sent me an article entitled "London's Best Chinese Restaurants (By Those Who Know)"; we have decided to try and hit as many on this list as possible. So, Maotai Kitchen was the first place we visited and we're definitely coming back! They serve regional dishes from Guizhou, where most people seem to enjoy burning their faces off. Unfortunately, flaming jets of bright red chilli which singe your nose hairs from 2' away isn't one of my strong points, so we had to test some of the milder fare.We ordered a bowl of their special beef brisket in soup with thick hand-pulled noodles, a plate of aromatic double-cooked pork belly slices and string (green) beans. If I recall correctly, all of them had a little symbol next to the name to indicate that these were "Maotai Kitchen Specialities". OK, aim for those!Let me say first that the pork belly slices were really thin, like, streaky bacon thin. And slightly dry / tough. And therefore disappointing. BUT, WOW, the brisket was melt-in-your-mouth, the hand-pulled noodles were perfectly al dente ("Q", for my fellow Asians), and the green beans were incredible! The decision has been made that next time we come back, we will be ordering the noodle soup and green beans again, as well as something new.Service was good as we were sat on the ground floor, but it seems they go up another floor or two with lots of space. Watch out for the stairs though - uneven at the best of times and mildly harrowing otherwise.

If I ever have a noodle craving, this is the place that I will go to. They have a specialist chef who hand pulls some extremely fresh and tasty noodles, and you can choose whether to have them thick, think or knife-pared as well as what you'd like to eat them with (soup base, with duck or beef or won ton etc). They are served in a huge bowl and are extremely filling, what's more is that they aren't expensive either. The staff are friendly and attentive (refilling my cups of Chinese tea for me) and I have never yet had to wait for a table, as there is plenty of seating there.I no longer visit Wagamamas for my noodle fix, and would highly recommend any noodle fan to give this place a go!

Visited here during a visit to London last year. After a few minutes we were seated in the small downstairs area. We ordered and after a bit of a wait the food arrived. We were both quite disappointed at the food and the service here. We had ordered a duck dish and a chilli disk. The duck dish came with a huge rind of fat on each slice, and the chilli dish had huge green chillies on. I like chilli but these were super hot!! When we had finished our meal we sat for quite a while with dirty plates and waited a long time for the bill to come. I agree with the other reviews that it is maybe more suited to the eastern palette and because of this my review may seem a bit unfair, however this does not excuse the poor service we received. My advice to you would be to try a restaurant on the Main Street as I think you can get better food there.

We ordered a Four Seasons Stir Fried String Bean, a roast duck noodle and a braised beef brisket soup noodle: all very well-executed. The beans were the best I've had in a long time - fresh, crispy and crunchy without being oily, not too spicy. The noodles needed a bit of a wait (20 minutes) but it was worth it. Beware the service charge, which was £3.30 for the two of us on Saturday.

My daughter wanted a very simple dish and the waitress was clearly annoyed at our lack of authenticity. We said we were going to leave and they were more than happy to let us go. On our way out I noticed we were the only Americans in the restaurant. Don't know if that was a factor but the service was s unwelcoming I had to question it. We found this place on Tripadvisor and noticed it scored highly for Chinatown. I'd say that the score is justified for the food which was excellent. A really unusual menu and generous portions. The lamb with cumin seeds was delicious. The house speciality is a soup buffet which is like a giant mixed meet and fish fondue. Will try that next time. The portions are large so you can get away with sharing a main course. The service is, as others have said, a little quirky but don't let that put you off. Not cheap but good quality.

I really couldn't decide whether to give this three or four stars. I just got back from two years in Guizhou (where the head chef is from) and some of the dishes are genuine replications of the common dishes in this region. My Chinese girlfriend was really impressed that they have proper rice noodles and the flavours were in the right ball park (if a little less spicy than the real deal). The problem is that there were quite a lot of mistakes...the soup lacked a bit of flavour, the hand made noodles were too thick and undercooked, the fried dumplings were not as crispy as they should have been and the chickens feet were like rubber. Overall I'd say this is a genuine representation of a lower than average restaurant in Guizhou...make of that what you will!

Decent value at £100 for 4, including masses of different food choices around £9 each, two rounds of drinks and what do you expect in central London? Dumping menu excellent, notably the seafood ones. Kids had chicken and sweetcorn soup, (huge portion), stir fry veg, sweet and sour chicken, beef in black bean), while the adults had Singapore noodles, excellent crispy beef and a special of pak choi steamed in garlic and ginger. This is one of only a handful of places that makes its own noodles as as far as I know, the only place in Soho Chinatown now, there were several a few years ago . You can actually see the chef pulling the noodles in the window. So if you like noodles, this is the place to go. You can opt to have your noodles, thick, medium, thin or knife cut (like tagliatelle). In addition, you can have it in a soup or without soup. The various dumplings aren't bad either.Don't go to this place for a romantic evening, it isn't a place to linger, think of it as the equivalent of a cafe. The service can range from excellent to poor. Just go for the noodles.

Went to this restaurant for lunch, nobody had greeted us when we went in, waited a while we went to the bar asked and been told to go upstairs by ourselves. We went upstairs and nobody there either so we found a empty table and sat down. A waitress walked towards to us with turtle speed threw some menus down saying " you can sit here". Then disappeared for 10 mins we had to call her back to order strange as there were only one other table dining. She took the order and disappeared for another 15 mins and came back with only 1 drink which we ordered 4. Then there were 2 other staff who looked like just came in to work they walked in shouted at each other. Finally one of our stir fried dishes came first, without saying a word the staff just placed the dish on our table, then disappeared for another 15 mins. We called her back again ask how long we need to wait for the rest of the order as the only on our dish was getting cold. She looked annoyed said it's supposed to be cold then walked off again. This is the worst dinning experience we have ever had in our life. We didn't wait for the rest of the food as it was a nightmare sitting in there. We paid for the only dish and ran out of there. Had a couple bottles of beer each, and a large bottle of fizzy water. In total the bill was under £100 for the 3 of us, and the service charge is already included in the bill so no need to leave a tip. I visited Maotai Kitchen with a couple of friend with relatively low expectations. I'm not a big fan of trying new places in Chinatown as it's usually very disappointing. This place proved me wrong! They offer handmade dumplings and noodles that are simply excellent. The noodles are hidden on the last page and come in soup and dry version. You also have many different type of noodles to choose from. We tried the beef brisket and the seafood noodles (both dry), with the knife noodles (option A) - these were wide and pretty thick. Not what I usually like but it was simply delicious! In the veggie category, we tried the Chinese broccoli - you can give that a miss, it was a bit bland. The French beens and kale were listed as a speciality and they were unbelievably tasty - recommend! Overall, the food was delicious and reasonably priced, and our waitress was very patient and smiling.Great experience!

We went with a couple and their toddler on a Sunday afternoon. The space is cosy but not cramped, and the staff were patient with a restless kid banging chopsticks around. The food was a mixed bag. "Water-cooked fish" (can't remembe what the dish's name was in English) was nice though I've had fresher more tender fish fillets this. The soft-shell crab in coconut was a big let down, we see to have been given the off-cuts of crab remains rather than crabs in their entirety, and what little of this there was was literally snowed under a mountain of dessicated coconut. For £10+ this was eye-watering, and sadly not for the dish's flavour. Steamed king prawns in broth and vermicelli was OK. Some of the vericelli were still hard and had to be left soaking into the broth before eating, and the flesh of the crustacen missing its unctousness. There were a couple other not very exciting choices (vegetable spring rolls, bean sprouts fried noodles, pak choi)... nothing stood out and there were a few bum notes. Not hugely pricey (sub £100 for 4, no drinks) but given country-wide standards of northern Chinese cuisine on offer, this is one to forget.

这家餐厅价格还是比较贵,感觉性价比整体来说只能说一般。环境还是不错,菜色味道不错但是不能算特色。红豆汤还蛮好喝的,感觉有点南欧的风情。

Maotai Kitchen in central London is my personal favorite among many Chinese restaurant I have dined at all over the world. A word of warning is in order: this is not a Chinese restaurant with the "standard" menu of spring rolls, meat on sweet and sour or szechuan sauce, etc. Rather, this places cultivates the cuisine from the Guizhou province in southwestern China. Maotai Kitchen have a substantial menu to choose from, including soups, cold and hot starters, and rather unique main courses. Chances are that you have not heard before about 90% of the dishes they serve. But the staff is helpful with making a selection. And of course, it can also be fun to be adventurous in a place like this. At Maotai kitchen, I get tasty Chinese food I have not known before--and this for a very reasonable price. The place is well worth the visit if you are looking for Chinese and are open to something new.

The star of the show here is the quality of the food. We had the set menu at 22.50 per person and on recommendation from the waiter had this for two people despite having a third person/teen with us as well. He was right, it was perfectly sized and honourable for a restaurateur to 'down sell'. Impressed. Our food and that brought to the next table was clearly a grade up from other recent meals in Chinatown (four in last year only). Very tasty, piping hot and well portioned. We were worried by the relatively low score of 3 for hygiene on the window sticker and nearly chose another but the customer area of the restaurant is very clean (glasses, crockery)The room itself downstairs is dark and quite ordinary, the ladies said that the upstairs was much larger but at the time we ate quite empty. This is not what I'd call a smart evening restaurant really but perfectly good.We quite fancy returning to try a couple of other dishes, it's on the list...

As paradoxical as it is finding good Chinese food in China town is not easy. Maotai Kitchen gave us a tasty and genuine Chinese food. We loved it and highly recommend to others.

We found this restaurant on trip advisor, we saw a few bad ratings but noticed they seemed to be someone wanting to vent with very few past reviews, so we tended to discount those. Their is a cultural divide with the staff which could be misinterpreted as rude. If you look at this as a chance to enjoy very authentic cuisine with loads of flavor extremely well prepared, then this is a place worth trying. We will also warn of the spice level, you may want them to bring the spice on the side and add as you wish. I was at my limit with the medium level, they offered to take it back thinking I was uncomfortable with the heat, but on the contrary, it was a treat. Sit where you can watch them make and cook the fresh noodles in the front window. A true skill made to look effortless.

We had a lovely meal with my family (2 adults + 2 kids). Bill came service charge incuded, I asked to take it out, our waitress queried it. And said what is wrong with my service? Nothing wrong with the service, but I don't want them telling us how much we should give for "tip" which was 12%, I will choose to give. I asked if it was compulsory, she said no. Paid the bill, just leaving then she chased me for the "tip" and said what's wrong with my service, why don't you want to give anything??? I couldn't believe it. Watch out....you don't have to pay the service charge.

This place is fast becoming our favourite Chinese. Today we had the Grilled fish and I must say this is one of the most amazing fish dishes I have ever had. This is a dish for 2 if you have only this with steamed rice but you could share in 4.

This restaurant is located just off the main street in Chinatown. We found it via TripAdvisor. We visited for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The menu is extensive, but it specialises in homemade noodles and dumplings. The noodle soup is probably the best I have ever eaten. The chef made the noodles fresh for us, which is a really nice touch. The pork and fennel dumplings were very tasty. The service was nice and friendly, and certainly wasn't rushed. We paid £38 for since dumplings, two main courses and a couple of drinks. Excellent value. Highly recommended!

The food is really good here and it was nothing like we expected it: south-western China cooking seems to be very different to the rest, very spicy, very hot. But good.Waiting times were very long, though, rice was served when we were nearly finished with eating.

Really plesantly surprised about this place. Never eaten in a restaurant in chinatown. I was in the area and was recommended this place. I am not very good with directions but its in teh heart of chinatown. The food was outstanding, it really was. I has a seafood noddle dish and my partner fried veg noodles. The portions are very generous, easily fill 2 people's bellies if not big eaters. I hate soup but tried the tom yom as it was higlhly recommeneded by my fried. Its was the ebst soup i have ever tasted. Seriusly, it was so good, my misses had chicken noodle soup which she enjoyed too. The portion of soup was also very generous. We came at a funny time around 4:30pm/5ispm. Some of the waiting staff were sitting slurrping on thier soup but that did not bother me. THe came across moody but once you settled in they are more friendly, i think its just a cultural thing. Chinese fokes are always fairly timid and I am a loud character LOL, but they were very nice i must say. Honesty a really enjoyable visit

This is the second time I've been here and it's reaaly good food with a twist. Last night we stuck with the south western specialties and spicy was the word. Brought two Chinese food sceptics with me and they enjoyed it too a nd want to go back. Make sure you try the lotus root!Watch the guy in the shop window make noodles - amazing. This time service was more typical of a chinese, though not bad. First time I was pleasantly surprised by the waiter on the ground floor who was helpful and polite.80% of customers were Chinese.

Dropped in here after a theatre visit for my Mums birthday. Service and food was very good. We had dumplings to start (veggie and meat), and a few mains with noodles and rice on the whole very good. You can order dishes that contain tripe/intestines/tendons/heads and the like, so we did try sizzling braised beef tendons, which was not to our taste but was gladly swapped out by the waiter for spicy octopus with dried chilli which was great.Highly recommend to anyone, will certainly call in next time we are in town.

I've been frequenting Chinatown eateries and this is one of few restaurants that I had not yet dined at. I cannot understand the outstanding reviews that have been given by other Tripadvisor members. The food was no more than average. The soup starter was very unappetising. The southern style beef noodle stew was ok but oily. The rice with potatoes and beans also ok. Service poor. Wrong order served and reluctant to rectify

This restaurant in the heart of London Chinatown was the best dining experience of our recent Christmas trip to London. We found it searching through tripadvisor because the majority of the places in Chinatown looked pretty much like tourist traps. Maotai has four floors and the interior is pretty nice, with red chinese decoration. The restaurant is filled with chinese people eating here, which is a good sign for the quality of the food. We took the marinated cabbage, sweet and sour beef soup, fried rice and pork ribs and everything tasted great and came in large portions. Some of the dishes here are really hot and spicy so if you dont prefer your food like his take something mild in taste. Overall great place, search for it if in The area.

We had a very special dinner at Maotai Kitchen last night. Started with very friendly and polite service. The menu includes lots of delicious dishes from South - West China, dishes which we have never tasted in any other Chinese restaurant. The portions are huge, seasoning amazingly tasty, the prices - very reasonable. Most of the audience was Chinese - surely they know where to find delicious, authentic food !Highly recommended restaurant, we will be back !

I researched the Internet for a long time before deciding where to go in Chinatown. According to me, most Chinese restaurants offer average food and I was looking for some more authentic flavours. I am very happy witht the choice I made! Me and my partner were the only non-Asian people in the restaurant, which is always a good sign! I also appreciated the fact that they just gave us chopsticks and didn't automatically give us knife and fork. As a starter I had the sweet sticky rice with red dates and lotus roots, which tasted great! As a main I went for the roast duck noodle soup, which was also delicous, and huge!! My partner went for the sauteed lily bulbs with celery, cashew and macademia nuts plus vegetable noodles. It all tasted very nice! Prices are a bit above average but food definitely is! The interior upstairs is nice enough, nothing exceptional but nothing bad to say about it either. Staff was polite enough.I'm very happy with my discovery!

We got there by chance, as we were hungry after Theater. We were seated upstairs, where it was quite cozy. As they advertise for homemade noodles, we had to go for it. And it was a good choice! They came in a pot of soup. The waitress was very friendly and helpful.

Great place with unique, non traditional flavor. If you are in Chinatown at Leicester Square on your own or with your other half and want to taste the local cuisine, look no further. If you have the whole family and the kids want the old familiar Chinese restaurant taste (egroll, chicken with cashew etc), take them elsewhere. The entrance doesn't look as impressive compared to the dozens of Asian places around, but once inside you are welcomed into one of three floors with nice seating area. 80% of dish names on the well varied menu show a red pepper; they are quite spicy. There are some non spicy and extra hot options as well. Dishes are generous, appealing and the taste is not conventional but very good.Overall - highly recommended.

Specialist cuisine that is pretty authentic of the guizhou region of china. Lots of spice from dried chillies so tach out. Had the deep fried seabass with tomato and ham sauce, the classic slippery noodles, turnip fried rice, chilli chicken cooked in beer....all tasty and complements each other. Good value for the amount and quality. They also do happy hour dumplings with haf price discounts before 5pm. Staff are more used to Chinese speaking customers so be ready to repeat your self and be patient when making your order. Small restaurant but more room on the upper floors. Clean toilets.

Maotai specialises in the regional cuisine from Guizhou, a province in the south west of China. As far as I know this is the only restaurant in London that serves Guizhou cuisine. I went there with a friend, on a friend's recommendation. Between the two of us, we had three main course, a portion of plain white rice and 2 beers. We wanted to order two portions of plain white rice but the waiter told us that one portion would be enough as one of the dishes that we ordered already had sticky rice included. This I thought was really honest. We had spicy boneless pork with chillies and coconut, steamed aubergines with fresh chillies and sticky rice with red dates and pork belly. With the exception of the pork belly, the other two dishes were very spicy, I did not mind that as I love spicy food. The food was very freshly prepared, full of flavour and absolutely delicious. The service was very good too. I will definitely go back again as there are so many other interesting dishes on the menu that I will like to try including the different types of noodles which is freshly made.

Went there with a voucher and had a two course meal with sides and a bottle of wine for £39 with Amazon local. Large duck breast with pickled cabbage starter and then enormous main courses, pork with mre chillies than you can count and coconut, a whole sea bass, noodles and fried rice, bottle of rosé wine which want part of the deal but they gave it to us anyway. Way more food than we could eat so they parcelled it all up for us to take home. There are chillies in just about everything but they'll put less in if you ask. Very friendly service, excellent find amongst all the standard Chinese in Chinatown .

Went there by sheer chance as most other restaurants in the street were full. we were a group of 10 and were given a table on top floor. our waitress Mai was very knowledgeable and helped us in choosing the order. The food quality was out of this world as it was not too oily and freshly cooked , from duck to noodles to shrimps et.. all dishes tasted great .there fried ice cream was a nice experience as well...it seems that they have a Karaoke room on top floor as we enjoyed the managers singing while eating our meal..This is a nice restaurant that I would like to eat at again if in china town again.Strange that they were not on trip advisor before…

Highly disappointed with our evening. It is a cold evening and therefore we were wearing big coats and we had to ask staff if there was a cloakroom. Not a great start already! Following this, the food was brought out so quickly and therefore not allowing us to enjoy each dish. In addition, after rushing our starters, mains and dessert, we were told we had to quickly give up the table for the next guests who weren't anywhere to be seen. They couldn't be quick enough to send us on our way! Given the price, you would think service would be on point but it was an utter disappointment. This was a dinner to celebrate a birthday and they did not make it special at all. Shall not be recommending nor shall I ever be going back.

UPDATE: We became regulars here until 2020 and were very sad indeed to dscover that it has closed its doors. A real loss to anyone who enjoys first quality Japanese food! This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in London but it is so authentic that you need a guide. The sushi is good, the usual menu items are very good but if you really want to eat well you need to choose from the blackboard with the day's dishes chalked up in Japanese. Marinated squid guts and tuna cheek are delicious and so genuine: you could be in a very good local restaurant in Japan. These kind of dishes are not found in most London Japanese restaurants and this is why Sakana Tei is special. Grab a Japanese or literate Chinese friend and treat them in return for choosing the delicious surprises you would normally miss!
