Makara in Brighton and Hove

We are regular customers here and highly reccommend it as we really enjoy the food and appreciate the accomodating staff! The menu caters well for meat eaters and vegetarians. You get an extra treat of a baklava too at the end of your meal!

Went for a birthday meal with the family , had all different mixed foods to try from . It was all tasty and service was good .

It was our first visit to the restaurant after reading the positive reviews on trip advisor and we were not disappointed. We booked a table as it was Mother's day it was busy but not overcrowded which was good. There is a good menu plenty of choice for vegetarian and non vegetarian. We were served with complimentary olives and bread when we sat down. We had hot and cold starters served with freshly baked bread. All the food served was delicious and cooked to order. The meat dishes served were tender and we all were happy with what we chose. A complementary piece of baklava is served at the end of the meal. There is also a good wine list at reasonable prices. The staff are very friendly and attentive and there is no service charge added to your bill. All in all a great way to enjoy Mother's Day We will definitely go back to sample some more dishes.

It was a great pleasure to have a proper kebab and meze experience in Makara. We arrived late for our booking but the friendly staff helped us to have a perfect time for our dinner. One of team members named Cuma made sure that everything was excellent on our side. As well as a skilled member of the restaurant, he is also a very nice and friendly person. We were there as two families with two toddlers, so it is also highly recommended as a great child friendly, good quality restaurant with delicious food.

okay where can i begin...Makara really is a delight. The food was absolutely brilliant, we had a selection of hot and cold starters as its so hard to choose because everything on the menu sounds delicious: i would definitely recommend doing this so you can try a little of everything. We then went on to mains where I enjoyed a gorgeous veggie meal paired with their lovely house red. But beside the food I have to say that the staff are what makes this place- so friendly, warm and attentive I can't wait to come back! Thank you Makara!

There's a coal bbq in the restauraunt so you can see and smell the food being grilled, I shared the mixed grill for 2 people which was all delicious. My partner had the lamb chops which we both agreed are the star of the show. Along with a few bottles of red and good quality bread. Couldn't ask for more.

Arguably the best Turkish restaurant in Brighton. Friendly staff and the food is superb. I would recommend the mixed grill if you like your meat. I visit here at least 3 times a month and would recommend the restaurant to anyone.

Had great food and great service here. The menu has a good selection too, will definitely be going back to sample more as I was eyeing up the other customers food too and it all looked delicious!

This has to be one of the best Turkish restaurants I have been too, being from London I am no stranger to the Turkish cuisine but my experience at Makara was something different. The food was very clean and wasn't your typical oily meal. The meat was very succulent and full of flavour, staff were a great help and catered for our needs with pleasure. If your visiting Brighton this restaurant is a must, the location is also great right near the sea front and main attractions.

Visited this restaurant with friends for a birthday meal and its by far the best turkish restaurant we’ve been to.The food cannot be faulted. Big portions and really good quality.

After a few drink my partner and I stumbled into this place on the off chance of then having a table. We wanted a “posh kebab!” It was fill up but they accommodated us. The decoration is very basic and could probably do with a remodel but the food is really tasty, good portions, all freshly cooked and at a great price. You even get free Baklava with your bill. We loved it.

We've been quite a few times for lunch and it's very good. Low key but friendly service, very good chicken kebabs, a relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. The portions can be quite variable in size between the different dishes but we had a main and two side dishes to share which worked out just right for lunch. The falafels are also very good.

This is my second review for this restaurant. I've been coming here for years and I've never had a bad meal. Just read a review from a customer who seems to do around leaving negative reviews just to negatively impact all the good work they do here.

Me and my partner have visited brighton several times and I could honestly say this has been one of the BEST restaurants we have been to in terms of food and service.

This is a regular haunt for us. A true taste of Turkey in Hove. Their lamb chops and Ezme salad is especially good.

Environment was very curated and cozy, staff was very good. Food was really good quality. My friend got the lamb chops and I got the lamb and chicken skewers which were delicious. Don't want to spoil it but best park was when they gave us a little Turkish treat on the house, which was an amazing discovery for me. Wine is also very good. Oh and you need to try the turkish coffee!

Friday night meal, staff coped very well but it was busy and loud. Food is great, lots of small dishes to share. Everything very tasty.

I love this restaurant. The lamb is melt in your mouth delicious. I'm a big fan of the Ali Nazik and the lamb chops, but whatever else I've eaten has always been delicious.

We visited with a group of friends on a Monday night before Christmas, having booked early as it gets very booked up. We had the main meals which were a great variety of lamb and chicken kebabs with rice, moussaka etc, and all cooked behind us on an open grill which was very warming. However, they had run out of puddings, they don’t do many, which was disappointing. We did walk 10 mins after to an excellent ice cream parlour which made up for it. Hove has plenty of nice restaurants, cafes and bars in this area.

It was such a lovely dinner with amazing food. The mezes and all the main complement with each other really well. Particularly the lamb chops are my favourite The menu is also full of vegetarian dishes.. highly recommended!

The food here is delicious, especially the lamb chops the staff are also very friendly and are happy to recommend something should you find yourself spoilt for choice (you will). My girlfriend and I go here often and it never disappoints

We have lived in Hove for nine years and are now regulars here. The food is just superb. The staff are lovely and it has a really friendly atmosphere. It's not too expensive and you can watch as your food is cooked on the open charcoal grill.

Una buena alternativa sabiendo que en UK no hay una comida típica ( quitando fish & chip ) Me lo recomendó un guía y ha sido todo un acierto. La comida es verdaderamente buena y el servicio es excelente. Todos los camareros son súper amables y serviciales. El mejor hummus que he probado!! El té turco y los pastelitos típicos de la casa son una delicia. Sin duda volveré a repetir si vuelvo de visita a Brighton ;-).

Visited for a late Saturday lunch. Fairly quiet but enough people in it to give the place a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. We've been quitea few times before and have occasionally over ordered so we kept it simple and both just had the chicken breast kebabs which comes with salad and rice and a half grilled tomato and chilli. There's a lot of chicken but it was delicious so no need to ask for a take away carton (which they've happily provided before). They bring complimentary (delicious) hot bread and olives while you read the menu and a small pastry afterwards. The service is discreet, relaxed and friendly. It's a very relaxed and enjoyable place to eat and the food is very good.

I visited Makara with my family before going to a gig at The Brunswick. The food was lovely - beautifully balanced flavours and very tasty. Reasonably priced and the waiting staff were great, attentive without being overbearing. We were even treated to a dessert to share and coffees on the house. A lovely evening.

I went here with my wife on a recent weekend away to Brighton. We love Turkish food and having looked on trip advisor we came here.We had the meze cold shared starter which was lovely but the bread was the star of the show.The mixed grill was nice but I have had better.You must book as it soon filled up.

It is one my favourite place in brighton . The food was freshly prepared . As a meat lover , I will suggest you to give a try . The dishes are efficient for a big man like me . Staff was quite friendly and helpful Especially Cuma , very nice gentleman indeed , such a levelheaded man . The striking point was the design and that mystic ambiance , absolutely loved it . Prices was reasonable . Help yourself , you won't regret it . Take my word

We went to Makara yesterday for lunch and had the special mixed grill for two. It was delicious. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection, the chicken was superb, in fact the whole meal was plentiful, tasty and served hot straight from the barbecue grill. Good service, the manager was very respectful and friendly. In fact he served us a free desert. We have been going there, off and on , for the last five years but I have never been one to write reviews. However, I thought I had to write something about our last visit. It was so good. Also the salad with pomegranate vinsgar dressing was delicious. Highly recommended.

We are regulars to Makara as it serves delicious food. I highly recommend mixed grill (especially the one “for two”, as you get couple of delicious extras—lamb ribs are finger licking delicious) All meat was cooked very well and tasted great, accompanied by Efez draft it is match made in heaven. Followed by baclava and tea, yummy!! The staff are always very nice and the restaurant is nice and tidy.

We have visited Makara several times and are always very happy. The kebabs are excellent, they have an open grill in the restaurant. The flatbread and olives are delicious. Would also recommend the cold dips (aubergine one in particular!)The Turkish red wine is very good and the service is friendly. It gets very busy so booking is recommended, especially at weekends.

This my 2nd visit with a group of friends. I absolutely love the food here. Everything I had was delicious, fresh and good quality. The meat is tender and tasty. The breads fluffy and fresh. And the dips, those dips I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.I highly recommend a visit here and I will definitely return.

I don't think I need to add more , it's always the best , they have always great mezes and kebabs of course friendly and very helpful staff, for the great quality very affordable price.Main thing, is everything is so delicious

Brilliant BBQ. The food comes out fast and you can watch it cook in front of you. The mixed grill is super value, the meat is always tender and well cooked. Excellent value.

We came here for lunch. We have been here a number of time before as we have really enjoyed it previously. We initially arrived at midday and was told they weren’t open until 12.30. We went for a walk and came back at 12.40. Their was a group of men in the restaurant standing about and eventually one of them made eye contact and the other men left and we were allowed to sit down. We came to have the meze to share but were told they had none as the chef hadn’t prepared it yet! Funnily they had the individual items so why they couldn’t have given us the shared meze I do not know. We ordered some of the individual cold starters and also a few hot starters, to be told ten minutes later one wasnt available. I felt really underwhelmed with both the food and the service and considering we had a small glass of wine each and some starters I think just under £44 to be excessive especially as a shared meze was £11 for two!!! I appreciate we ordered a few hot starters but they weren’t that expensive to make it so much. Unfortunately neither of us will be returning to Makara. We were both extremely disappointed. I also feel it would have been better to tell us items on the menu were unavailable before giving us bread, etc. and making it awkward for us to leave.

Had a good experience here. Restaurant is good for a variety of meat dishes that are freshly prepared on the grill. Service was prompt and efficient. Restaurant also has kids options. Restaurant appeared quite welcoming of children during our first visit. Would visit again.

Although the food tasted lovely, there were little vegan options. Staff friendly and reasonably priced. Nice atmosphere although was a little quiet when we went.

Had yet another great meal at this lovely restaurant. The meat is well cooked and well seasoned . We always have the platter for 2 and it is delicious. Highly recomend.

Me and my Mother have been to Makara as a treat a few times. We loved their grilled meat and mezes.As it was her birthday, she chose to have a family meal there to celebrate. When we got seated at our table, we realised it only had us and a couple in the restaurant! Usually it would be packed meaning you would need to book a table like we did. We ordered our Mezes but had to ask a few times because it hadn't been served to us. Of course they were delicious but it spoiled it that we were absolutely staving when the food finally arrived!When our mains came (we didn't need to hassle them for this), one of the dishes were stone cold making us have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to go in the microwave! It was still cold when it was served to us again. The waiter was also very grumpy making him very careless.The food at Makara is fabulous but the service is terrible and has really put me off! I hope it is better if I ever go again.

Like the curates egg, good in parts, with a lot of room for improvement. Chefs special Sama Tavuk Beyti was excellent, the rest of our experience did not match that standard. We were told off quite rudely when we arrived that we were late and that we were lucky to still have a table! The restaurant was not at capacity the whole time we were there. The lentil soup was average, quite watery and lacking any flavour. The Adana kebab was disappointing, rather small, chewy and also lacked flavour. The accompanying rice was undercooked. Perhaps they just had a bad night at the office.

The food was excellent and the service and atmosphere was very friendly and genuine, a feat achieved despite some chap kicking off in a middle class manner because his food took an hour (actually 25minutes). Fair play, I would have been a bit touchy if I was wearing a puffer jacket in that heat. Great value too (the food not the drama).

If you are looking for something tasty from Mediterrenian cuisine, I definitely recommend Makara. Perfect food and service.

Food was nice but very little of it! Platter for 5 was only really enough for 2-3 at a push. Service was poor. And they dont have a dessert menu! Everyone raved about it but its basically a posh kebab shop.

Overall disappointing. We had to flag down service for drinks, to order, for drinks... We went for the main platter. Defo not enough for 4 adults. Anatolia in Brighton still our fave for Turkish.

Went in with my cousin for an early midweek meal tonight (5pm), we were the only ones in there for all of 15 minutes before it started to fill up.The food was fantastic as always, the meat is always fresh, and cooked to order, We shared 2 starters; The Hellimli Kabak Mucver, which is always fantastic, and the Borek pastries, then went straight on to the Grilled platter with more rice and fresh salad than we could possibly finish after all that meat!Thanks again guys!

Managed to get a table for 2 at very short notice so do book -But what an experience went for the humus & lamb starter with the lamb kebab & Smokey aubergine main - What a delight succulent tender lamb with Smokey aubergine sauce unbelievable -Your loss if you don't give it a try -

Really good mixed grill, cooked over hot coals front of house. Usual huge selection of hot and cold mezze - everything looked good. No complaints - much better than average Turkish restaurant.

This was the second time I'd been here and it was every bit as good as it was 3yrs ago. The food is out of this world. It is a very busy restaurant and I would advise booking if you intend to go fri-sun, otherwise you will have quite a wait. The food would be worth the wait!

Haven't been here for ages so we thought we'd go for Sunday lunch - I was surprised as normally this place is packed however it was very quiet with just a handful of tables in use. I went for Mix Sis which is a Combination of lamb and chicken cubes, grilled on charcaol served with homemade rice; the boy went for Chicken Wings & Chips from the kids menu, my daughter the Tavuk Sis and partner Sarma Tavuk Sis. Before the main came out we were served warm bread and some olives. The food was served quickly and with a complimentary salad; the meat was all cooked well. The kids portion was a generous portion and my son happily chomped his was through the lot. My partner and daughter both enjoyed their meals and all ood was well cookedWhen I've been here before we've been served Baklava after the main meal - unfortunately it wasn't to be on this visit and that was disappointing as I was looking forward to this. The bill for all 4 us including drinks was less than £50.00 and was good value.

A large group of us visited to celebrate 3 of our birthdays, none of us had been before but had heard good things about the food. We were seated right in front of the grill which was rather too warm for the closest people! The service was fine but not very friendly, jugs of water were brought on request but with just 6 glasses for the 11 of us. I was surprised to find there was absolutely no fish on the menu but opted for one of the vegetarian mains. A mix of chickpeas, halloumi and herbs fried in breadcrumbs with a yoghurt dip; it was quite tasty but more like a starter really. The bread served was lovely and the meat dishes were apparently very good.I'm probably greedy but if having a meal out I want a starter, main and dessert. Consequently I was really not happy to discover they don't have a dessert menu - they usually offer baklava but had run out! There are plenty of food shops in the area and we'd booked weeks in advance so I felt that was pretty poor. We were given complimentary shots of Ouzo by way of apology but it didn't appease my sweet tooth in any way.The prices are reasonable and when paying the bill we all paid extra as a tip, the change was not brought back to us though and it struck me as a little rude that it was just assumed.

I feel sad that I am having to give a bad review. I have been coming to Makara since it first opened and was a frequent customer - my fave place in Hove. I took a friend for a birthday lunch last week - her first time - and was totally disappointed. The water jug was stained and there was no ice or lemon. The menus - the same ones since it opened - were quite disgusting - dirty and sellotaped together. Is it being run by someone else because in earlier days the service was impeccable? I won't be going back until they have a clean up and get their high standards back. The food was fine. Sorry Makara - had to be honest :(

We visit here regularly, when we can get in. The food is straightforward and good. I normally have the chicken shish, but that is because I enjoy it so much

What can I say, the food was absolutely delicious! The restaurant is quite small inside, so if you were trying for a week-end, I would recommend booking. My friend and I tried a sharing cold starter which we couldn't finish! My meal of Sarma Tavuk Beyt was also plentiful. I would highly recommend this restaurant, not only for the food but also the cost. We all found it extremely good value for money.

Our party dined here for an evening meal and we all ordered a variety of kebabs. The wait to get the food was just verging on being a little too long, as we had all exhausted most of our conversations and inspected every photo of our trip to Brighton at least three times on our phones.I had ordered a chicken kebab of sorts, said to be spiced with garlic. It arrived, there were two kebab strips, a portion of plain rice, half a sliced tomato and a chilli on the plate. I was not immediately wowed in the presentations stakes. My dining partners had mixed kebabs which had a similar presentation style. The quality of the meats was actually pretty good, tender and well cooked. Mine was rather bland though, this might have been down to my choice, but it just had a chargrilled flavour and not much else going on. Unfortunately, the half a tomato and chilli which also lurked on my plate failed to up the excitement levels.The shared side salad was fresh, but would have benefited from some kind of dressing. The lettuce, cucumber and tomato was sufficient without stirring the tastebuds.We had previously dined at another Turkish restaurant called Ephesus in Brighton, which offered much more involving taste sensations and altogether more inspired presentation of the dishes, sadly this was closed on this visit to Brighton so we plumped for Makara instead.The meal was by no means bad, but it did not wow me and I felt the asking price of around 10-12 pounds for two chicken strips, a spoonful of rice and half a tomato was questionnable.

Always packed Friday and Saturday you have to book in advance but it's well worth it been many times.

The food is always delicious, without waiting ages for the free starter of grilled pitta bread and olives. The sevice is friendly and accommodating. I love Turkish and Middle Eastern food and this place is authentic and not expensive either.

I visited this place for dinner a couple of days ago with friends. We ordered 4 starters each and shared a mix grill platter, absolutely beautiful food. Service was quick and friendly even though the place was full, would highly recommend.

Visited this establishment last Sunday at lunchtime and unfortunately I was not too happy as I found 4 negative things about this place. We were left to wait long time before been given the shabby and broken menu as the waitress was too busy to talk ages to a more important table than ours. The decor is stuck in a kind of second hand furniture still from the 50's. The extractor cover in copper above the grill should be clean and shiny...not a kind of opaque greasy and full of dust. And no dessert and coffee menu, well at least the waiter was honest enough to say that the only coffee they had was nescafe. Will think twice before pay a visit again to this place. Overall will give 2 stars as only the food was very nice.

Have eaten here on numerous occasions and never had cause to complain, however the lamb chops I had last night were next level.Highly recommend them. I love the bread and olives they give you whilst you are choosing your food.Casual family atmosphere, will be back soon.

On a Sunday evening we went to Makara and try to ordered some take away. The restaurant didn't seem busy. We asked a member of staff if we can order some take away, for which he checked and got back to us with a blank answer: No, sorry, no take away. No reason, no explanation .Whatever on their web site it states takeaway as well as delivery. Really disappointed, we will not visit the restaurant again.

I've been a few times over the years, great for both lunch and evening meals. Relaxed atmosphere, traditional tasty food. The staff are very skilled at being attentive without being intrusive. You never feel rushed.

Make sure you book a table well in advance if you want to eat here as it gets very booked up. The food was very tasty, we shared the mixed grill which plenty of food for two. The restaurant was very busy and had a great atmosphere and was very reasonably priced. We will return again for sure. Enjoy!

The charcoal grill is the star of this restaurant...their Turkish bread-which is served before & during meals-is absolutely unbelievably delicious & you always need/want more. You have to be careful though, to leave enough room for the heavenly meze-a massive selection of beautiful hot & cold starters, to be followed by kebabs from the grill or a Mediterranean flavoured casserole...& so much choice when it's comes to the vegetarian option-there's barely enough space to fit in the complimentary baklava....But you have to.

Went for an evening meal. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were seated by the door on a windy cold evening but as soon as a table became free we were moved to a warmer part of the restaurant. The complimentary bread and olives were very nice. Food was delicious and a lovely change from other typical restaurants. Everyone was very friendly and was a nice chilled atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

Went here for the first time on recommendation. Went with my son early dinner we had calamari and falafel and flat bread .followed by chichen kebab and rice my son had chicken in a wrap with yogart and a tomato sauce rice food lovely .and then they brought 2 small pieces of baklava they were lovely but only small a taster. We asked for a sweet menu and would have like icecream or something just to finish off the meal and they said they don't do sweets and the baklava complimentary .

We had a lovely meze meal here. Food tasted great and the is variety extensive. However my only gripes was there are very few fish options available and the mint tea is hot water with 4 small mint leaves in it.We had to keep attracting attention from various waitresses and waiters who weren't that busy tbh, however service was polite and attentive once we got their attention.Overall the food was nice, and reasonably priced, we had a fab time and would come again.

Very popular restaurant, and you quickly find out why. The service is very efficient and friendly. The first freebie was a thin pitta toasted on the charcaol grill with a little olive oil. The starters are excellent and I can recommend the Turkish beer. The mains are just as tasty. Everything certainly tasted fresh. In spite of the restaurant being full, all courses were served promptly. None of my party could manage a dessert, but the waitress did bring some gorgeous baclava for us all to sample. Would definitely return.

Looking back on my first review on this place, it seemed that I was fairly indifferent about Makara so I wanted to provide an updated review as I now really enjoy eating here. It is still a functional experience (but the service is warm and efficient), and I always eat the same thing but this place is busy for a good reason.

First visit to this restaurant and it met all our expectations. All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had booked and unfortunately when we arrived the only table was near to the door, but the maitre d' reassured us that we would be moved when a table was available, this promise was kept without fuss.The menu is extensive and the food very good. Good wine list. Service was first rate and we could not fault anything. We shall return to enjoy what is great value food and drink. The restaurant has a good atmosphere and a real buzz. Would highly recommend.

I just love this place a lot. Very very delicious food lam chops and ribs are my favourite. Service they provide is always spectacular. You just feel so welcome. Absolutely highly recommended!!

I went here with my wife as an alternative to having a Sunday roast. The food is always good here freshly prepared in front on your eyes, you can see them cooking on the grill and it comes straight to your table. Delicious food which is why it's always busy, so book in advance...

Came to celebrate a birthday and this was our first visit. Staff were very attentive and educated about the menu choices. We had a slow cooked shoulder of lamb-simply stole the show-thank you and will be seeing you again soon.

Have visited with friends on a number of occasions and happily shared starters and the mixed grill for two between a number of us. There is food aplenty and all great quality. The meat has a gorgeous authentic chargrilled taste, and some of the starters that I have tried have been lovely, vegetables in a smokey tomato sauce and creamy mushrooms. I have come in a group of about 6/7 both times and we have had to book a table, as it gets busy at certain times, even on week days. But the staff were very attentive and accommodating towards us. We were given top up of water and bread without having to ask and they were very generous. The restaurant itself is quite small, but has a nice feel to it. I would definitely recommend for a tasty filling meal at a reasonable price! I will definitely visit again.

This is a regular for us both for quiet business lunches and for family or friends dinner, especially when in neeed of something close to home cooking. In the evening it's bustling and busy and a great atmosphere. Service always excellent. I always have the same thing and it's always exactly as I expect it to be - wonderfully cooked chicken cooked on the barbecue and smokey aubergine and peppers. I can't comment on other dishes other than to say that any guest I take here returns to this truly excellent Turkish restaurant.

Went with friends to celebrate. Great food, ambience & service. Always busy and consistent. Highly recommended. Not too pricey either.

Good Turkish food especially the mezes. The staff are incredibly friendly and the desserts fabulous!
