What a brilliant restaurant! We always go for special occasions and went today for my mum's birthday and it did not disappoint! We all had a Sunday roast and was the best roast I have had in years. Food was incredible and the staff were all so professional and attentive. One of the best restaurants in Essex highly recommend!

Sunday lunch with my wife today. Food was excellent and plenty of it for the price. The staff were friendly and very attentive. Speed of service was excellent. Loved the total experience. Thank you. Will book again.

EDIT Jan 24 We had a date night the first in many months and chose the restaurant, food was outstanding, however felt that they could do with more staff. Our booking was 7:15 and we left at 10:30 in that time we were asked for drinks just once. We had 2 drinks plus a coffee all evening and the 2nd we asked for as food arrived. We had actually finished our meal and were simply waiting for someone to ask if we wanted the bill from 9:30. In that time although we were enjoying having a chat, could have sank a few more drinks in between. Food zero complaints as they accommodate even the trickiest eaters, but this experience lacked the service from our previous visit, the restaurant was busier since our last visit, yet needing an extra pair of hands would be my only criticism. ****** Previous review from 5 Years Ago Had very high expectations as some of the reviews were really good and wasn’t disappointed. I cannot name a single restaurant who can cater to allergies as well as here. We didn't phone ahead and warn them of a dairy allergy but they were fantastic. As everything on the menu is cooked from scratch they could tweak the ingredients on any item - meaning we were not restricted to a limited number of options.my wife ordered from their usual menu and they served a dairy free version of everything from starter and main course! They even had a vegan ice cream which was not just plain vanilla aswell as a special banana cake and both were home made. Will be booking again without fail. Staff were super helpful and friendly too - highly recommended.

We came here during December for a Sunday lunch birthday meal, the food was really fantastic and there was a great marriage of flavours in every dish. The portions were of a good size and the staff were attentive

Service was exceptional. Drinks selection was great. I would have liked some more veggie options though and some simple butter with the bread selection at the start rather than the onion butter. Flavours in what I ordered were overpowering and a little too salty for my taste this time round.

Had a family Christmas lunch - food was great service was first class. Couldn’t fault the restaurant highly recommend. Plus it’s a local business which we should all try and support.

Myself and friends dined at the Magic Mushroom today. We had the Christmas lunch menu which was very good value. The food was excellent and was served piping hot. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

Have only been for afternoon tea which was scrumptious but my lunch this afternoon was sublime. Thank you.

It's lost its Magic I'm afraid....Standard service...no real attention to detail...shame really as the food is pretty decent....didn't feel really welcomed...treated as just another table to serve....robotic service....first requirement if it was my restaurant a vibrant credible head waiter or waitress to bring some of the Magic back...

Went today for Sunday lunch for my birthday...all 4 of us absolutely agreed it was the best roast dinner we had ever had !! ...topped off with wonderful staff and impeccable service .....seriously can not recommend this place highly enough!!

I have given overall 1 star only because the SERVICE!!! The service OMG!!!ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!!!. If you are planning to celebrate big party at the private dinning area then it is definitely a WRONG PLACE!We have spent almost 3K for 18people but received the most awful service. This place has no clue how to serve big parties. One waiter has served 18 people. She confused everyone's order and ended up having some deserts not being on the table at all. She was rude and always with unhappy face. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANY TO CELEBRATE BIG PARTY HERE. I had too much stress instead of coming to the party relax and enjoy x Change manager at this place!!!!!!! AWFUL!!! The only reason this place is still Open is that the food is absolutely delicious.

Had an absolutely outstanding evening on Friday 28th October. Service was top notch from the moment we entered, friendly, professional and not over bearing. The food was superb. Starters of King scallop and pigeon. Great taste and presentation. Mains were also outstanding - stuffed Sole and Chicken ballotine. Complemented by good wines and a cocktail to finish. The restaurant was very roomy, nice background music and all in all a great evening.

My fiance and I tried this restaurant for the first time today, the food was beautiful. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were fantastic. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend the desserts!

My first visit, wife's 3rd. I was impressed with set meal price (Friday night) £32.50 (3course)as the quality of food was excellent, service was good, my one quibble was price of wine, for what was a very average Rioja, it's noticeable that there are no wine prices on website, probably wise, overall a very good evening, and clearly popular as by 8pm it was very busy, would definitely concider using again.

A little cramped. So much so that wheelchair users have to go outside to get to the toilets. The food was very good, although, when they say the sirloin is best served pink, they were wrong. I like the idea of rare meat, but it was rather chewy. Prices are high, but you're paying for high class food. Too much attention payed to the presentation for my style. Portion sizes were reasonable. Menu choice was also reasonable. Staff were very polite and friendly.

This has to be one of the best restaurants to eat in Essex , lovely food in a lovely setting ! It’s nice to go somewhere too that people can dress up for !! Never had a bad meal here or found cause to complain , great place !

Food good and tasty! Unfortunately the Service was not of the standard one hopes for - failed to bring one of the 'starters', A request for a sparkling bottle of water took 20 minutes and an order for 2 liqueurs and a peppermint tea again 20 minutes (at least). It appeared that servers (drinks and food) were not designated to tables and therefore resulted in the Service being haphazard.

Very enjoyable experience, excellent food, very well presented, and one criticism would be the limited menu, and not having just a plain fish dish, some people unfortunately have dietary issues, due to medical conditions, very good value for money considering other restaurants that offer a similar service locally, highly recommend a visit.

Came here a few weeks ago with my 2 lads. Had a lovely Sunday Roast, staff were helpful and polite. Reasonably priced too. Would definately come again.

What a find, The Magic Mushroom had it all. Stopped for a romantic lunch date. We had the Devon Crab and King Scallops to start, followed by the Raman Panko Egg and Guinea Fowl for main from the A La Carte menu. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasted devine. The service was exceptional. The front of house team managed that beautiful balance of attentive and engaging, whilst still allowing our privacy to enjoy our meal. We also enjoyed their cocktails and virgin cocktails (with me being nominated driver). Overall an exceptional experience, we will be returning. Bravo 'The Magic Mushroom'

My third and final time visiting this restaurant. Came here earlier today to celebrate a 30th birthday and was not impressed at all. Firstly, I emailed over a week in advance to let them know that a member of my group had a broken leg and would need a table at the front of the restaurant, they replied and said that was fine but on arrival I was told the table was accidentally given away so we had to go all the way to the back of the restaurant. We didn’t make a fuss. First round of drinks came and some were wrong but again, understanding how busy they were, we just drank what we were given and didn’t make a fuss. It was well over an hour until we got our starters and an even longer wait for our main course. Yet again we didn't complain as the food was mostly nice. We were then ignored by staff for a good 45 mins and finally ordered a dessert. 3 of the 6 desserts were wrong and my dessert contained peanuts when it wasn't supposed to and I am allergic. I had a small mouthful before I realised and didn't eat any more. Luckily on this occasion I did not have a strong reaction. When I told the staff, I was pretty much blamed by them for not declaring my allergy. However not one member of staff asked about allergens at any point and I trusted their menu which didn’t state the dish had any peanuts. They then admitted it had been prepared incorrectly. I got ice cream instead and they still managed to get that wrong, at this point I just gave up. All I was offered was the cost of my meal taken off the bill which, in my opinion, isn’t close to good enough (not that any amount of money off could compensate for such a mistake). Eventually they took another persons meal off and I didn’t have the energy to argue further. I have eaten here twice before and both times it was good but unfortunately the mistake they made today was too great and I’ll never go back again.

Absolutely amazing! We came here for a birthday dinner originally. One year later we decided to do our post wedding sit down 3 course meal here where we hired the back of the restaurant for our post wedding celebrations. Everything was perfect, everyone commented on how good the food was. Excellent service and food, could not have been happier. Special thank you to Danielle and her team. We will be sure to be back very soon or probably on our 1st wedding anniversary. Love Claudia & James x

We had a table for two towards the back of the restaurant, where there was a large party of people for an 18th birthday celebration and near a private function with doors closed. We thought that it may get a little noisy with the 18th as the acoustics were a little echoy and it was virtually empty in this part of the restaurant. But it was fine! We could hear the music and singing along from the private party, but we thought it added to make a nice atmosphere. The staff apologised for the noise asked us if it was bothering us and that we could move if we wanted, but we chose to stay. The food was amazing. Looked beautiful and tasted so good. We had starters and mains from the a la carte menu - but couldn't find room for a dessert. Staff were attentive, friendly and informative on the menu.

Great food and lovely staff but very noisy when busy

Wow as always. Every time we come here we say it’s the best meal and each time it exceeds the previous ( if that is even possible). Service was impeccable and every mouthful of food was a plethora of incredible flavours we didn’t want to end. Still my favourite restaurant

I've got to say that I didn't really like this restaurant. Although the food is nice, it is overpriced because the service and atmosphere don't live up to the promises offered by the prices. My party was 6 people and we were sat right in the middle so constantly walked past by staff. The doors were also open with seating offered outside. This caused two issues. First, there were a lot of flies! Couldn't relax into the meal because I was constantly fighting off flies. Second, you can smell cigarette smoke from smokers sitting outside. Big mistake! Service was mixed depending on the staff member. Portion sizes were also quite small for the cost of the dish. I had the almond frangipane tart which was a deconstructed almond cake with two cherries and a small blob of ice cream. The meringue smelled like egg whites with no flavour. Drinks were also limited for drivers with no soft drinks menu shown. This would encourage to believe they have most drinks, right? No! Only Coke or Diet Coke - no Coke Zero! No cooler for the wine at the table either. For me the restaurant does not live up to expectations. More bothered about the high prices but have forgotten about looking after their customers.

Wonderful birthday celebrations this evening. Amazing food and service.

I nice little gem... Service was very good not overpowering. But there in the background. Good choice of wines and beer. Starters were very tasty and a good selection.. I felt the duck terainwas slightly to cold which made the duck skin leaving a fatty lineing in the mouth.. But the scallops and the salmon were amazing and so fresh... The skate wing for main was beautiful and cooked so we'll. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection and my wife enjoyed it.. The lamb was cooked well and very tasty. Most probably the best lamb rack I have had in a long time... Deserts the strawberry crumble creme brulee was stunning best desert in years.... The almond frangipane lovely.. White chocolate pana cotta very well made smooth and melt in the mouth... The orange custard tart we unfortunately found very disappointing. We coujd not taste any orange to the tart and also the overpowering taste and smell of eggs was not nice. We did mention this to the waiting staff. And they went and spoke with the chef. And came back and offered us a replacement allternitive desert. Very impressed. My only other comment is that when we arrived my daughter had requested a quiet part of the restaurant in booking the table as I have health issues with my hearing. And when we arrived we had a lovely table nice and quiet. But unfortunately as we were starting are starters a table of 13_15 people were put next to us.. They were obviously celebrateing something and we're in high spirits and very noisy as they were all talking at once. Which was off putting. And affected me communicating with my family. But to some up good disabled access and good parking with lovely clean toilets. I woukd recommend this lovely restaurant.....

We chose Magic Mushroom for NYE through the recommendation of a great overall evening for this special event by others who had been before. We were not disappointed with anything. The entire evening went well, and we were more than satisfied with what we received V's what we paid for. The meal consisted of an 8 course Tasting Menu, which we both really enjoyed.

Great Sunday lunch. Ambience was superb with a good crowd. We love the beef slices, cooked to perfection the way we liked it.

Food was absolutely fantastic, although service was a little slow. Would have had a issue if they had insisted on us vacating the table after 2 hours!

This is a smart and excellent restaurant. First time I visited but will definitely be back. Food was great. Especially liked the young barman Connor. Very knowledgeable and friendly.

Booked here for early dinner as was already at Barleylands farm with the kids. A bit more posh than we are used to going with the kids, but food for them was good and the staff were wonderful with them. As for adults, food was stunningly good. You get what you pay for and this was top notch! Might dress up a little more formal next time though!!

I love this place. Everything about it is just right. Once again i enjoyed fantastic food with amazing flavours. And great service from the two young ladies in front of house. A great birthday treat for myself. You must try the lamb!

Attended a wedding here recently. Very nice restaurant with good food. There was 25 of us at the wedding and enjoyed the day v much. Apart from the fact that we had to pre order our food and my main course was given to the photographer! Think all the guests should be served first! The young lady behind the bar who was only 18, two weeks ago is brilliant! She looked after us so well.

We love Magic Mushroom. Service is the epitome of friendly excellence, they know how to handle kids, food is always at least great, and often excellent. My only critique on atmosphere would be the music. But now, we just find it funny. Waiting for the lift music version of Ace of Spades 😅🤣

Loved it, went with family for a Sunday roast. They are all meat eaters and I’m vegan but felt like I had just as good of a meal. Soup was rich and delicious, nut roast wasn’t dry at all and was full of flavour, I even had a Yorkshire pudding which is rare when you ask for vegan, the dessert was roasted pineapple with coconut crème. Yum, will definitely return.

The food was good, but unfortunately the service left a lot to desire. The staff were impolite and short, making the experience unpleasant. I would never go back or recommend to anyone.

Our 2 children took us to the Magic Mushroom for our joint 60th birthday on 25/02. From the moment we entered, the service was spot on, very attentive without being overbearing. Subtle and tasteful decor. The food was exceptional, good size plates of delicious food and tasty drinks, including a good vegan menu. Being Billericay residents for almost 40 years, we can’t quite work out why we’ve never been before, however during Covid we had a ‘takeaway’, for a birthday meal, which was brilliant, so we’re really glad that we’ve finally sampled this gem and we will be returning. Will recommend.

Went to a 70th birthday party. Drinks a little pricy. Food was good. Parking was on the other side of the road and a bit of a walk especially in the dark as there are no pavements on the quite busy road.

After previous good experiences, tonight was a massive disappointment. We won't be back. Service started well but quickly went downhill. We had to ask for replacement knives for our starters. No one checked if the starters or mains were okay, until the end. Meals were passable, not the best scallops or lamb or monkfish. In the curry was a cardamom pod which burst in the mouth, leaving a terrible taste and spoilingthe meal. I did complain, we were offered a free dessert. However, after 15mins of waiting our order hadn't been taken so we had to decline. No adjustment was made on the bill. I complained again at the end and the guy just said that hopefully they can improve for next time: I assured him that we won't be back. Such shame as previously I had liked this restaurant and we like to support local places.

Lively lively service. So friendly and helpful. Just the right amount of attention . We had the classic afternoon tea and it was delicious. We did the three boxes home with us though as the scones were too delicious to leave behind !

I only enquired about private dining and got fobbed off and hung up on twice when I wanted to check further dates. Wouldn't ever visit now due to poor service before we event went!

Food was excellent, service was a little slow and my wife was supposed to have candles on her desert as we were celebrating her birthday, however the restaurant did refund us one meal as a gesture of good will after realising their mistake.

Real nice atmosphere and great staff was a lovely touch of a real pink orchard in a glass. For starters had warm bread and butter with the secret house sauce. For the mains, We had the most gorgeous beef fillet it just melted in the mouth like butter. This went well with mushroom ragu and blue cheese and tender stem almond brocoli for the sides If you broke down the meal, a lot of very nice flavours were very well put together BIG WELLDONE TO THE CHEF Brilliant meal overall. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to dine here. Try the beef fillet. If you're a steak lover medium rare, you can't order this any other way

We had the function room for a birthday celebration last night and the evening was brilliant. The food was served hot and timely and was simply delicious. We had a young lady called Molly looking after us last night. What an asset she is to them. She had the right level of attentiveness, and looked after us all very well for the evening. The manager was responsive to our requests and questions leading up to the evening making the surprise planning easy. It’s a great venue if you are thinking of a smaller more intimate place to hold a celebration. We were able to play our music playlist via their sound system and we had access to a screen to play our photo slideshow. I throughly recommend this venue and will not hesitate to book again in the future.

This and "The Bell" in Horndon are probably the best restaurants in the area. Proper fresh food and not a chain. Could do with a few more vegetarian options but the quality of food is good although on a Sunday service is slow.

Recently ate at the Magic Mushroom, thought the food was delicious, however service was really slow had to keep asking if we can get some more drinks and order our desserts. When we sat down at the start of the meal, we wasn’t offered any drinks we had to ask to get some.

I am giving the Magic Mushroom a score of two. The reason for this was the atrocious condition of the car park area which was like an ice skating rink with no attempt to clear it or salt grit it making it extremely unsafe for patrons of the restaurant. Then my take on the food was mediocre at best. Typical Christmas menu the main was lack lustre and predictable eg 5 Brussels sprouts 3 roast potatoes, a thimble of stuffing 3 slices of Turkey and a bacon wrapped sausage. Okay but that’s it. Starter was crab and prawn quite nice but the Christmas pud lacked flavour or anything exciting added eating more like floury cake. Quite disappointing after I had heard such good things about the restaurant. The price tag of £38 pound a head was quite steep
